In diesem Kontext schillert der politische Seitenwechsel in vielen Farben: Bekehrung und Denunziation, enttäuschte Verweigerung, Spaltung und Spionage. Die Medientheorien des 20. Jahrhunderts bildeten sich zwischen sozialen Modellen und ihren politischen Anwendungen. Der Seitenwechsel stand im Zentrum der Theoriebildung: in der teilnehmenden Beobachtung von Propaganda und Massenmedien, Kriegstechnik und Pazifismus, Werbung und Konsumkritik. Was wird aus diesem politischen Kern der Medien und der Medientheorie nach dem Kalten Krieg und im 21. Jahrhundert? Ist die Rede vom Verrat noch eine tragende politische Größe, etwa in der Enttäuschung über staatliche und wirtschaftliche Versprechen? Und welche Rolle spielen mediale Feindbilder heute in den Widersprüchen der Weltgesellschaft etwa wenn man George Bush und Osama Bin Ladin aus nigerianischer Perspektive verfolgt? Die Herausgeber: Cornelia Epping-Jäger ist wissenschaftliche Mitarbeiterin am Kulturwissenschaftlichen Forschungskolleg der Universität zu Köln. Ihre Arbeitsschwerpunkte sind Mediengeschichte und Medientheorie. Torsten Hahn ist Wissenschaftlicher Assistent am Institut für deutsche Sprache und Literatur der Universität zu Köln. Sein aktueller Arbeitsschwerpunkt ist Literatur um 1800 als Gesellschaftsbobachtung. Erhard Schüttpelz war von 1998 bis 2003 Wissenschaftlicher Mitarbeiter am Kulturwissenschaftlichen Forschungskolleg "Medien und kulturelle Kommunikation" der Universität zu Köln.     Abstract: st th The 21 century is the century of Asia in the same way the 20 century was of America. In terms of urbanization challenges Asia in the current century is faced with an enormous surge of urban population and the associated problems of rural –urban migration, overcrowding, proliferation of slums, housing shortage, growing unempl- ment and underemployment and choice between capital intensive productivity vs. labor intensive employment generation, suffocating pollution caused by both industries and motor vehicle fumes, crumbling urban facilities and education / health care systems and above all mind boggling poverty. While facing these challenges many bright urbani- tion aspects may also be noted –efficient mass transport systems of Japan, banning of leaded fuels for motor vehicles in Indian mega cities, formation and operation of metro –planning organizations, linking rural/urban development and a general consciousness of urban problems, recognization and efforts to resolve them. This book pioneers the analysis and research effort on urbanization in Asia in the st 21 century in light of new and continued challenges. It is a part of a continuum that emanates from the selected papers at the Sixth Asian Urbanization Conference (AUC) held in Chennai (Madras), India in January 2000. AUC is organized almost every third year. The Asian Urbanization Research Organization (AURA) headquartered at The University of Akron’s Department of Geography and Planning plans such conferences.

    Abstract: Open-access edition: DOI 10.6069/9780295804057 Upon coming to power in 1949, the Chinese Communist government proclaimed that its stance toward ethnic minorities--who comprise approximately eight percent of China’s population--differed from that of previous regimes and that it would help preserve the linguistic and cultural heritage of the fifty-five official "minority nationalities." However, minority culture suffered widespread destruction in the early decades of the People’s Republic of China, and minority areas still lag far behind Han (majority) areas economically. Since the mid-1990s, both domestic and foreign developments have refocused government attention on the inhabitants of China’s minority regions, their relationship to the Chinese state, and their foreign ties. Intense economic development of and Han settlement in China’s remote minority regions threaten to displace indigenous populations, post-Soviet establishment of independent countries composed mainly of Muslim and Turkic-speaking peoples presents questions for related groups in China, freedom of Mongolia from Soviet control raises the specter of a pan-Mongolian movement encompassing Chinese Mongols, and international groups press for a more autonomous or even independent Tibet. In Governing China’s Multiethnic Frontiers, leading scholars examine the Chinese government’s administration of its ethnic minority regions, particularly border areas where ethnicity is at times a volatile issue and where separatist movements are feared. Seven essays focus on the Muslim Hui, multiethnic southwest China, Inner Mongolia, Xinjiang, and Tibet.     Abstract: On the premise that pension provision in Europe will dramatically change over the next few decades, this book concentrates on the funded component of pension wealth, and specifically on annuities - financial products that, on the basis of actuarial equivalence, allow the conversion of wealth into a lifelong stream of income. Developing an Annuity Market in Europe provides an analysis of how longevity and return risks are dealt with, besides considering key features from both household and insurance company perspectives. It takes account of the fact that annuity markets are expected to attract much interest in future years given the prospective cuts in public pension expenditure. In order to fill the gap between shrinking pensions and desired retirement consumption, the authors argue, annuities must be well regulated and supplied with financially attractive products. These conditions hardly exist today: thin markets and scant interest prevail, information is incomplete and imperfect, products show significant disparities. The contributors to this book explore the causes of present malfunctioning and examine the changes that may give annuities a new and vital function, which, along with greater competition and greater regulation may significantly alter the present scene of pension finance. Finally, the book offers an overview of regulatory issues including transparency, prudential provisions, appropriate levels of guarantees, and administrative costs.     Abstract: Information and computer technologies are used every day by real people with real needs. The authors contributing to Shaping the Network Society describe how technology can be used effectively by communities, activists, and citizens to meet society's challenges. Women achieved this by fighting for their rights in the legal, economic, and political spheres. In the various parts of Europe, this process went forward at different paces and followed different patterns. Most historical research up to now has ignored this diversity, preferring to focus on women's emancipation movements in major western European countries such as Britain and France. The present volume provides a broader context to the movement by including countries, both large and small, from all regions of Europe. Fourteen historians, all of them specialists in women's history, examine the origins and development of women's emancipation movements in their respective areas of expertise. By exploring the cultural and political diversity of nineteenth-century Europe and at the same time pointing out connections to questions explored by conventional scholarship, the essays shed new light on common developments and problems

    Abstract: Hydrogen has the potential to play an important role as a sustainable and environmentally acceptable source of energy in the 21st century. Present methods for producing hydrogen are mainly based on the reforming of fossil fuels with subsequent release of greenhouse gases. To avoid producing greenhouse gases, the possibility to use heat and surplus electricity from nuclear power plants to produce hydrogen by water cracking is being investigated. This report presents the state of the art in the nuclear production of hydrogen and describes the scientific and technical challenges associated with it.

    Abstract: Ethnic/racial relations have been a perennial theme in Southeast Asian studies. Current events have highlighted the tensions among ethnicgroups and the need to maintain ethnic/racial harmony for national unity. This book analyses ethnic/race relations in Singapore, Malaysia, and Indonesia, with special reference to the roles of ethnic Chinese in nation-building.     Abstract: What do people from South America usually assume about doing business with North Americans, and vice versa? How do these stereotypes influence their perceptions of one another? Are teacher expectations biased by students' gender, social class, or ethnicity? Are attractive people assumed to be more or less intelligent than others? Understanding the nature of stereotyping is crucial in answering questions like these and in advancing social psychology and its applications, such as improving intergroup relations. This book challenges conventional thinking that stereotypes are always inaccurate, exaggerated, and generally destructive by looking at stereotyping empirically. The chapters provide insights into how stereotyping may help us manage information without necessarily being destructive. They also unearth the complex cognitive and attitudinal processes that underlie stereotyping, so we may harness these processes to better understand group differences and to promote greater respect for those we see as different from ourselves.
