    Kurzfassung: Dieses Buch deutet die Rituale und Praktiken der Freimaurerbruderschaft als Cultural Performance. Anhand von reichhaltigem historischen Material kann gezeigt werden, dass die freimaurerischen Praktiken in der Perspektive der kultur- und sozialwissenschaftlichen Konzepte der 〉〉Performativität〈〈 und des 〉〉Habitus〈〈 genuin soziale Formen der inkorporierenden Einübung einer bürgerlichen Habitusethik sind. Die Analyse dieser rituellen Form der sozialen und körperorientierten Habitusprägung in der entstehenden Commercial Society macht das historische Phänomen als Teil der Kultur- und Gesellschaftsgeschichte sichtbar - und geht damit über die bekannten pauschalen Verweise auf die geistesgeschichtliche Nähe zu Ideen der Aufklärung hinaus.

As the Qajar dynasty sought to integrate the peoples on its margins into the state, the British Empire made commercial inroads into the once inaccessible mountains on the frontier between Iran and Iraq. The distance between the state and the tribes was narrowed through imperial projects that included the building of a road through the mountains, the gathering of geographical and ethnographic information, and the exploration for oil, which culminated during the Iranian Constitutional Revolution. These modern projects assimilated autonomous pastoral nomadic tribes on the peripheries of Qajar Iran into a wider imperial territory and the world economy. Tribal subjects did not remain passive amidst these changes in environment and society, however, and projects of empire in the hinterlands of Iran were always mediated through encounters, accommodation, and engagement with the tribes. In contrast to the range of literature on the urban classes and political center in Qajar Iran, Arash Khazeni adopts a view from the Bakhtiyari tents on the periphery. Drawing upon Persian chronicles, tribal histories, and archival sources from London, Tehran, and Isfahan, this book opens new ground by approaching nineteenth-century Iran from its edge and placing the tribal periphery at the heart of a tale about empire and assimilation in the modern Middle East. --From publisher's description

    Kurzfassung: The horrific tragedies of Central Africa in the 1990s riveted the attention of the world. But these crises did not occur in a historical vacuum. By peering through the mists of the past, the case studies presented in The Land Beyond the Mists illustrate the significant advances to have taken place since decolonization in our understanding of the pre-colonial histories of Rwanda, Burundi, and eastern Congo. Based on both oral and written sources, these essays are important both for their methods-viewing history from the perspective of local actors-and for their conclusions, which seriously challenge colonial myths about the area

    Kurzfassung: Main description: Handwerker und Kleinhändler standen in der frühen Bundesrepublik unter hohem wirtschaftlichen und politischen Anpassungsdruck. Die neuen, zunehmend von wirtschaftsliberalen Vorstellungen und demokratischen Werten geprägten Rahmenbedingungen sowie die beschleunigte wirtschaftliche und gesellschaftliche Modernisierung stellten die ökonomische Existenz und das berufsständische Selbstverständnis vieler mittelständischer Gewerbetreibender in Frage. Abdolreza Scheybani beschreibt und erklärt die letztlich geglückte Integration dieser traditionellen Berufsgruppen in das sich herausbildende wirtschaftliche, soziale und politische System der Bundesrepublik. Er greift dabei die zentrale Frage nach der Wechselwirkung zwischen der Mittelstandspolitik einerseits und den Veränderungen der ökonomischen Bedingungen und der Lebensverhältnisse der gewerblichen Mittelschicht andererseits auf. Das Massensterben mittelständischer Kleinstbetriebe und die Entstehung einer außer- und tendenziell antiparlamentarischen Opposition in Gestalt des sogenannten Mittelstandsblocks zeigen, daß dieser Prozeß keineswegs reibungslos verlief und erhebliches politisches Konfliktpotential in sich barg.     Kurzfassung: Dieses Buch deutet die Rituale und Praktiken der Freimaurerbruderschaft als Cultural Performance. Anhand von reichhaltigem historischen Material kann gezeigt werden, dass die freimaurerischen Praktiken in der Perspektive der kultur- und sozialwissenschaftlichen Konzepte der »Performativität« und des »Habitus« genuin soziale Formen der inkorporierenden Einübung einer bürgerlichen Habitusethik sind.Die Analyse dieser rituellen Form der sozialen und körperorientierten Habitusprägung in der entstehenden Commercial Society macht das historische Phänomen als Teil der Kultur- und Gesellschaftsgeschichte sichtbar - und geht damit über die bekannten pauschalen Verweise auf die geistesgeschichtliche Nähe zu Ideen der Aufklärung hinaus

    Kurzfassung: In 1847, during the great age of the freak show, the British periodical Punch bemoaned the public's "prevailing taste for deformity." This vividly detailed work argues that far from being purely exploitative, displays of anomalous bodies served a deeper social purpose as they generated popular and scientific debates over the meanings attached to bodily difference. Nadja Durbach examines freaks both well-known and obscure including the Elephant Man; "Lalloo, the Double-Bodied Hindoo Boy," a set of conjoined twins advertised as half male, half female; Krao, a seven-year-old hairy Laotian girl who was marketed as Darwin's "missing link"; the "Last of the Mysterious Aztecs" and African "Cannibal Kings," who were often merely Irishmen in blackface. Upending our tendency to read late twentieth-century conceptions of disability onto the bodies of freak show performers, Durbach shows that these spectacles helped to articulate the cultural meanings invested in otherness--and thus clarified what it meant to be British--at a key moment in the making of modern and imperial ideologies and identities.

    Kurzfassung: The Straight State is the most expansive study of the federal regulation of homosexuality yet written. Unearthing startling new evidence from the National Archives, Margot Canaday shows how the state systematically came to penalize homosexuality, giving rise to a regime of second-class citizenship that sexual minorities still live under today. Canaday looks at three key arenas of government control--immigration, the military, and welfare--and demonstrates how federal enforcement of sexual norms emerged with the rise of the modern bureaucratic state. She begins at the turn of the twentieth century when the state first stumbled upon evidence of sex and gender nonconformity, revealing how homosexuality was policed indirectly through the exclusion of sexually "degenerate" immigrants and other regulatory measures aimed at combating poverty, violence, and vice. Canaday argues that the state's gradual awareness of homosexuality intensified during the later New Deal and through the postwar period as policies were enacted that explicitly used homosexuality to define who could enter the country, serve in the military, and collect state benefits. Midcentury repression was not a sudden response to newly visible gay subcultures, Canaday demonstrates, but the culmination of a much longer and slower process of state-building during which the state came to know and to care about homosexuality across many decades. Social, political, and legal history at their most compelling, The Straight State explores how regulation transformed the regulated: in drawing boundaries around national citizenship, the state helped to define the very meaning of homosexuality in America.

    Kurzfassung: "How have conceptions and practices of sovereignty shaped how Chineseness is imagined? This ethnography addresses this question through the example of Macau, a southern Chinese city that was a Portuguese colony from the 1550s until 1999. As the Portuguese administration prepared to transfer Macau to Chinese control, it mounted a campaign to convince the city's residents, 95 percent of whom identified as Chinese, that they possessed a "unique cultural identity" that made them different from other Chinese, and that resulted from the existence of a Portuguese state on Chinese soil. This attempt sparked reflections on the meaning of Portuguese governance that challenged not only conventional definitions of sovereignty but also conventional notions of Chineseness as a subjectivity common to all Chinese people around the world. Various stories about sovereignty and Chineseness and their interrelationship were told in Macau in the 1990s. This book is about those stories and how they informed the lives of Macau residents in ways that allowed different relationships among sovereignty, subjectivity, and culture to become thinkable, while also providing a sense of why, at times, it may not be desirable to think them."--Publisher's description

The author owns the copyright and transferred it to the editor of the German translation for free.The author is one of the most prominent ethnologists of Greece. He investigates the family and kinship structures as well as the marriage practices, the transfer of marriage goods, and the dowry stystem of in the Arvanite villages in Southeastern Attica (Southern Greece) on the basis of fieldwork and archival research. The Arvanites represent the predecessors of the present Albanian population a branch of whichmigrated to its present settlements in the second half of the 14th century.The main title of the book is related to the fact that due to the adaption processes of th 19th and 20th centuries this ethnic group does not any longer practice its original language in everyday life. The author states that also the original social structure shifted towards the Greek environment, e.g. in form of ambilineal descent calculation instead of the original patrilineal descent calculation.Alexakis work enters scientific newland insofar as the author is the first Greek scholar who treats this topic from a modern historical-anthropological perspective.     Kurzfassung: Der Wirtschaftsraum in der EuRegio zwischen Aachen und Verviers wächst heute wieder zusammen. Migration über die Grenzen hinweg ist dabei ein bestimmendes Element. Solche kleinräumige Wanderungsbewegungen sind im Dreiländereck jedoch keineswegs ein neues Phänomen. Schon vor 200 Jahren waren sie ein Garant für den Erfolg der Entwicklung, etwa der Tuchindustrie.Die von belgischen und deutschen Wissenschaftlern gemeinsam erstellte Studie untersucht neben den Rahmenbedingungen unterschiedlichste Aspekte dieser Gesellschaft von Migranten. Immer haben die Autoren dabei die Menschen, ihre Chancen und Schicksale im Blick. Sie zeigen, dass vor und nach 1800 im Raum zwischen Aachen und Verviers nicht vordringlich Grenzen und nationalstaatliche Ressentiments bestimmend waren, sondern viel stärker mikro- und makroökonomische Bedingungen das Leben der Menschen beeinflussten.Doch die Geschichte soll nicht abstrakt bleiben: Das Buch wird ergänzt durch eine Reiseroute auf den Spuren der Migration. Er verweist auf ein modernes Todesproblem: Mit ihm wird die Angst des sich »nur noch mit sich selbst identisch« (Luhmann) verstehenden Individuums vor einem Selbstverlust thematisiert, die eng mit der Verzeitlichung der Gesellschaft sowie der anthropologischen Transformation seit der Aufklärung zusammenhängt. Welche Bedeutung kommt dem Tod zu nach Überwindung der christlich-mittelalterlichen Seelenvorstellungen im Zuge der Aufklärung?Die Studie rekonstruiert die wechselseitigen Bezüge zwischen Wissen und Tod, die der Bildung dieses Begriffs zugrunde liegen. Die soziale Reichweite des Scheintodes wird mittels konkurrierender Deutungsmuster und kultureller Praktiken des Umgangs mit Tod und Sterben untersucht, zu denen neben Diskursen aus der Medizin oder Theologie religiöses und überliefertes Wissen zählen

    Kurzfassung: The turn of the twentieth century in New York City was characterized by radical transformation as the advent of consumer capitalism confronted established social hierarchies, culture, and conceptions of selfhood. The popular stage existed in a symbiotic relationship with the city and uniquely captured the contested terms of immigrant identity of the time. Street Scenes focuses on the intersection of modern city life and stage performance. From street life and slumming to vaudeville and early cinema, to Yiddish theater and blackface comedy, Esther Romeyn discloses racial comedy, passing, and masquerade as gestures of cultural translation. In these performances she detects an obsession with the idea of the city as theater and the self as actor, which was fueled by the challenges that consumer capitalism presented to notions of an "authentic" self. It was exactly this idea of "authentic" immigrant selfhood that was at stake in many performances on the popular stage, and Romeyn ultimately demonstrates how these diverse and potent immigrant works influenced the emergence of a modern metropolitan culture.

    Kurzfassung: In August 1880, businessman Adrian Jakobsen convinced eight Inuit men, women, and children from Hebron and Nakvak, Labrador to accompany him to Europe to be "exhibited" in zoos and Völkerschauen (ethnographic shows). Abraham, Maria, Noggasak, Paingo, Sara, Terrianiak, Tobias, and Ulrike agreed, partly for the money and partly out of curiosity to see the wonders of Europe, which they had heard about from Moravian missionaries.The Inuit arrived in the fall of 1880 and were much talked and written about in the local press. Meanwhile, the Moravian missionaries, who had begged them not to embark on the journey, were busily writing letters and trying to stay in contact with Abraham and his family. By January 1881 all eight Inuit had died of smallpox. This story is told through several different perspectives, from Abraham's diary, the earliest known Inuit autobiography, and the missionaries’ letters and reports, to a scholarly article, newspaper pieces, and even advertising. Many illustrations, including portraits done of the Inuit visitors, scans of some of the original documents in German, and recent photos of the abandoned Moravian mission in Hebron, round out Abraham’s intriguing and unfortunate story.

    Kurzfassung: When American victors entered Germany in the spring of 1945, they came armed not only with a commitment to democracy but also to Jim Crow practices. Race after Hitler tells the story of how troubled race relations among American occupation soldiers, and black-white mixing within Germany, unexpectedly shaped German notions of race after 1945. Biracial occupation children became objects of intense scrutiny and politicking by postwar Germans into the 1960s, resulting in a shift away from official antisemitism to a focus on color and blackness. Beginning with black GIs' unexpected feelings of liberation in postfascist Germany, Fehrenbach investigates reactions to their relations with white German women and to the few thousand babies born of these unions. Drawing on social welfare and other official reports, scientific studies, and media portrayals from both sides of the Atlantic, Fehrenbach reconstructs social policy debates regarding black occupation children, such as whether they should be integrated into German society or adopted to African American or other families abroad. Ultimately, a consciously liberal discourse of race emerged in response to the children among Germans who prided themselves on--and were lauded by the black American press for--rejecting the hateful practices of National Socialism and the segregationist United States. Fehrenbach charts her story against a longer history of German racism extending from nineteenth-century colonialism through National Socialism to contemporary debates about multiculturalism. An important and provocative work, Race after Hitler explores how racial ideologies are altered through transnational contact accompanying war and regime change, even and especially in the most intimate areas of sex and reproduction

    Kurzfassung: The years between 1790 and 1830 saw over a hundred and fifty million people brought under British imperial control, and one of the most momentous outbursts of British literary and artistic production, announcing a new world of social and individual traumas and possibilities. This book traces the emergence of new forms of imperialism and capitalism as part of a culture of modernisation in the late eighteenth and early nineteenth century, and looks at the ways in which they were identified with and contested in Romanticism. Saree Makdisi argues that this process has to be understood in global terms, beyond the British and European viewpoint, and that developments in India, Africa, and the Arab world (up to and including our own time) enable us to understand more fully the texts and contexts of British Romanticism.     Kurzfassung: In her analysis of the cultural construction of gender in early America, Elizabeth Reis explores the intersection of Puritan theology, Puritan evaluations of womanhood, and the Salem witchcraft episodes. She finds in that intersection the basis for understanding why women were accused of witchcraft more often than men, why they confessed more often, and why they frequently accused other women of being witches. In the process of negotiating their beliefs about the devil's powers in practical ways, both women and men embedded womanhood in the discourse of depravity. Women and men feared hell equally but the Puritan culture encourage women to believe that it was their vile natures which would take them there rather than the particular sins they may have committed
