For some advocates, basic income is a moral imperative, a policy with potential to upend structural inequalities; for others, it's a market-friendly version of the welfare state that doesn't constrain capitalism. By appealing differently to different political sensibilities, basic income has persisted in the political imagination for centuries. In this deeply erudite and original work, Anton Jäger and Daniel Zamora offer the first historical examination of basic income as a policy of convenience--and, critically, as an intellectual backstop for the shortcomings of capitalism. With modern origins in works of neoliberals like Friedrich Hayek, basic income was conceived as a form of market-friendly welfare state-a safety net around capitalism that wouldn't impinge on capitalism. Although neoliberals failed to make the idea a reality, they succeeded in seeding a fascination that would permeate all corners of late-century capitalism, from supply-side Democrats to neoclassical economists and barons of Silicon Valley.     Abstract: This book focuses on the recovery and new normal in a post-Covid scenario, drawing important lessons from the pandemic and proposing new ideas for sustainable development, endogenous dynamism, and inclusive growth. The book presents different ideas and perspectives about the present and the future, reflecting on four main fields of our economic reality: macroeconomics, governments, technology, and society. It discusses important topics for future economic scenarios, beginning with an estimation of the economic consequences of the absence of an equitable distribution of vaccines. This book aims to critically examine salient features in the global responses to the COVID-19 pandemic, including global governance, lockdowns, radical movements, and mRNA vaccines. The book will be a valuable resource to students, researchers, and policymakers who are working in the fields of environmental economics, global-scale public goods, and health economics. S. Niggol Seo is a natural resource economist who specializes in the study of global warming and globally shared goods, currently at the Muaebak Institute of Global Warming Studies. He received a Ph.D. degree from Yale University in 2006 with a dissertation on microbehavioural economics of climate change. He has worked on various projects with the World Bank on climate change in Africa, Latin America, and Asia and held Professor positions in the UK, Spain, and Australia from 2006 to 2015.

    Abstract: Die beiden „Ölschocks" von 1973/74 und 1979/80 waren nicht nur zentrale wirtschaftliche Ereignisse, sondern übten entscheidenden Einfluss auf die zeitgenössischen Debatten um eine grundlegende Reform, wenn nicht gar Revolution, der Weltwirtschaftsordnung aus. Das vorliegende Buch untersucht die Ölkrisen erstmals nicht allein mit Blick auf die Industriestaaten der nördlichen Hemisphäre, sondern fragt gleichberechtigt nach ihren Folgen für die Staaten des Globalen Südens. Die Studie argumentiert, dass die Ölkrisen der OPEC die notwendigen Machtmittel in die Hand gaben, um die Forderung nach einer Neuen Weltwirtschaftsordnung 1974 erfolgreich auf einen Spitzenplatz der internationalen Agenda zu setzen. Gleichzeitig führte die Belastung der Ökonomien zahlreicher „Entwicklungsländer" durch die massiven Ölpreissteigerungen jedoch mittelfristig zum Auseinanderbrechen der Solidarität der Dritten Welt und damit zum faktischen Ende des Reformprogramms in den frühen 1980er Jahren. Auf der Basis von Quellen aus Archiven in Afrika, Amerika, Asien und Europa ergänzt das Buch die existierenden auf Europa zentrierten Studien zur Geschichte der Nord-Süd-Beziehungen, der Ölkrisen und der 1970er Jahre im Allgemeinen.

    Abstract: Social mobility is the hope of economic development and the mantra of a good society. There are disagreements about what constitutes social mobility, but there is broad agreement that people should have roughly equal chances of success regardless of their economic status at birth. Concerns about rising inequality have engendered a renewed interest in social mobility—especially in the developing world. However, efforts to construct the databases and meet the standards required for conventional analyses of social mobility are at a preliminary stage and need to be complemented by innovative, conceptual, and methodological advances. If forms of mobility have slowed in the West, then we might be entering an age of rigid stratification with defined boundaries between the always-haves and the never-haves—which does not augur well for social stability. Social mobility research is ongoing, with substantive findings in different disciplines—typically with researchers in isolation from each other. A key contribution of this book is the pulling together of the emerging streams of knowledge. Generating policy-relevant knowledge is a principal concern. Three basic questions frame the study of diverse aspects of social mobility in the book. How to assess the extent of social mobility in a given development context when the datasets by conventional measurement techniques are unavailable? How to identify drivers and inhibitors of social mobility in particular developing country contexts? How to acquire the knowledge required to design interventions to raise social mobility, either by increasing upward mobility or by lowering downward mobility?...

    Abstract: The main original aim of the European Union was to promote convergence towards higher economic growth and social standards. However, EU countries have sometimes experienced different trajectories, due in part to their different starting points and the fact that their convergence on particular socio-economic indicators has varied. At the same time, little evidence has so far been presented on cross-country convergence within the EU. This book aims to answer a number of important questions. To what extent have European countries converged or diverged with EU-wide economic and social indicators over the past 20 years? What have been the drivers of convergence? Why do some countries lag behind, while others experience continuous upward convergence? Why are these trajectories not always linear? Particular attention is paid to the role of institutions, actors and industrial relations - focusing on the resources and strategies of governments, employers and trade unions - in nudging EU countries onto an upward convergence path. This book provides a unique analysis of socio-economic indicators to identify convergence trends in the EU. It defines a number of clusters that help to gauge the strengths and weaknesses of national socio-economic models and the European Social Model. Cross-country case studies help to identify the possible impact of global movements (migration, foreign investment) and policies (social protection, social dialogue, employment) on cross-country convergence. This book offers a timely assessment of convergence within the EU, identifying its drivers in the world of work and in institutions and industrial relations. It then moves from traditional computing in economics and finance to recent developments in natural computing, including applications of nature-inspired intelligence, genetic programming, swarm intelligence, and fuzzy logic. Also examined are recent developments of network and agent-based computing in economics.

    Abstract: Das Handbuch stellt den „State of the Art“ zu den Themen Armut und soziale Ausgrenzung dar. Beides nimmt in unserer Gesellschaft, in Europa und weltweit zu. Dies betrifft nicht nur die materielle Versorgung und Verteilung, sondern bezieht weitere soziale, ökonomische und politische Aspekte ein. In der nunmehr 3. Auflage greift das Handbuch diese multifaktoriellen Zusammenhänge auf und fügt zentrale Erkenntnisse von Theorie und sozialer Praxis zusammen. Es zeichnet sich durch einen interdisziplinären Zugang aus, in dem sich eine Vielzahl human-, geistes- und sozialwissenschaftliche Perspektiven bündeln. So werden u.a. wirtschaftliche Zusammenhänge, sozialethische Bewertungsmaßstäbe, juristische und verwaltungsmäßige Bearbeitungsformen, Bewältigung in und durch motopädagogische und ästhetische, bzw. medienpädagogische Praxis, geschichtliche Erfahrungen von und im Umgang mit Armut, soziale Beteiligungsstrukturen und individuelle Problemlösungskapazitäten dargestellt.     Abstract: This edited volume offers a multidisciplinary perspective on innovation challenges and innovative practices in the context of developing and transition countries. The contributions mostly embrace a national innovation system approach in an attempt to understand innovation processes and their implications at both macro and micro levels. The chapters in this book, taken as a whole, offer insights on a range of issues grouped around the following questions: - What are the challenges for innovation at the macro (system) and micro (firm) level according to the experiences of developing and transition countries? - What is the role of public policies in the transformation of national innovation systems? - What innovation practices allow to successfully overcome challenges to innovation? - What is the role of collaboration and learning in fostering innovation? A variety of methods are presented including historical analysis, participatory action research, case studies, document analysis and survey-based quantitative research as well as triangulation to study innovation and adaptation strategies in developing and transition countries.     Abstract: One-size-fits-all cluster policies have been rightly criticized in the literature. One promising approach is to focus cluster policies on the specific needs of firms depending on the stage of development (emergence, growth, sustainment or decline) their cluster is in. In this highly insightful book, these stage-specific cluster policies are analysed and evaluated. Moreover, several chapters also focus on smart specialization policies to promote regional development by taking into account the emergence and adaptation of clusters and industries. In so doing, the book contributes to a newly emerging literature on how the cluster life cycle concept can inform policies and how these policies differ from static approaches that ignore the dynamism of clusters. The underlying idea is to foster the ability of clusters to renew themselves and to generate new developmental paths, thus preventing stagnation and decline.     Abstract: Historically, entrepreneurs have always played a central role in the development of nation states. Aside from rentier states, which depend extensively on the availability of mineral resource rents, most economically prosperous nations in the world have strong, innovative and competitive business enterprises and entrepreneurs as the bedrock of their economic development and prosperity. It was arguably because of the above historical fact that the World Bank in 1989 declared that entrepreneurs will play a central role in transforming African economies. Aus einer politökonomischen Perspektive analysiert er die divergierenden energiepolitischen Entwicklungspfade beider Länder, in denen zunächst ein rasanter Zubau an erneuerbaren Energien im Strombereich stattgefunden hatte. Die größere Kontinuität der Energiewende in Deutschland erklärt der Autor mit dem Einfluss der Finanz- und Wirtschaftskrise in Verbindung mit Dynamiken ungleicher Entwicklung in der EU sowie der Beschaffenheit der Zivilgesellschaften und der staatlichen Institutionengefüge. Er argumentiert, dass in allen drei Fällen (EU, Deutschland, Spanien) die Dynamiken des Wandels ausgebremst wurden und viel zu kurz greifen, um einen raschen Umstieg auf eine nachhaltige Energieversorgung zu gewährleisten.     Abstract: This book makes the bold attempt at proposing a new general theory of economic development founded on the fact-based perspective of economic behaviour. The main premise is that economic institutions and policies must embody 'economic discrimination' if there is to be any chance of real economic development. By economic discrimination, the author means 'treating differences differently' by selecting and supporting economic entities and behaviour that contribute positively to the economy. By presenting a general theory that goes beyond mainstream and ad hoc economic theories, Sung-Hee Jwa provides a new way to look at capitalism beyond the Marxian interpretation, explaining why some economies develop and others don't. The book identifies markets, government and corporations as the 'holy trinity of economic development', that is, the three most important institutions that must work together via economic discrimination to steer the economy towards real transformative progress. It also warns against the current trend of economic egalitarianism or 'not treating differences differently' because it destroys economic incentives and results in an array of economic problems including growth stagnation and worsening income distribution.     Abstract: An account of all the new and surprising evidence now available for the beginnings of the earliest civilizations that contradict the standard narrative. Why did humans abandon hunting and gathering for sedentary communities dependent on livestock and cereal grains, and governed by precursors of today's states? Most people believe that plant and animal domestication allowed humans, finally, to settle down and form agricultural villages, towns, and states, which made possible civilization, law, public order, and a presumably secure way of living. But archaeological and historical evidence challenges this narrative. The first agrarian states, says James C. Scott, were born of accumulations of domestications: first fire, then plants, livestock, subjects of the state, captives, and finally women in the patriarchal family-all of which can be viewed as a way of gaining control over reproduction. Scott explores why we avoided sedentism and plow agriculture, the advantages of mobile subsistence, the unforeseeable disease epidemics arising from crowding plants, animals, and grain, and why all early states are based on millets and cereal grains and unfree labor. He also discusses the "barbarians" who long evaded state control, as a way of understanding continuing tension between states and nonsubject peoples

    Abstract: Dieses Buch gibt Antworten auf häufig artikulierte, zentrale Fragen zum Thema Globalisierung: Was ist Globalisierung? Wie kann das Globalisierungsniveau gemessen werden? Wie hat sich die Globalisierung räumlich und zeitlich entwickelt? Wie kann Globalisierung theoretisch und empirisch erklärt werden? Der Autor gibt neue Antworten und weist verbreitete Ansichten zurück. Durch die aufgezeigte unzureichende Validität der gängigsten Globalisierungsindikatoren wird ein nicht unerheblicher Teil der Ergebnisse bestehender Forschungsliteratur in Frage gestellt. By tracing developments in leadership thought over time, this book reveals the influence of ideas from history on current thinking, inviting reflection on what we now seek from leaders and followers. Its unique, multi-faceted analysis identifies non-scientific factors that have profoundly influenced the development of leadership science in the modern era.
