    Abstract: Fleischproduktion und Fleischkonsum stehen seit Ende des 20. Jahrhunderts zunehmend in der Kritik. Gesundheit, Tierethik und Klimawandel sind wesentliche Gründe. Fleisch ist sowohl zu einer Metapher für einen rücksichtslosen Umgang mit dem eigenen Körper als auch mit der globalen Umwelt geworden. Dabei sind tierische Produkte seit dem Beginn der Menschheit integrativer Bestandteil der Ernährung; sie genossen hohes Ansehen und waren Symbol für Wohlstand. Im 19. Jahrhundert wurde die Fleischproduktion allmählich industrialisiert, der Konsum stieg und wurde demokratisiert. Im Fokus standen bald weniger das Tier als seine Verwertbarkeit und die Produkte, die es lieferte. Das Lebendige wurde verdinglicht, und wir haben uns vom Fleisch entfremdet. Der Band zeichnet diesen Prozess nach und legt die gesellschaftliche, historisch gewachsene Logik von Fleischproduktion und Fleischkonsum offen.

    Abstract: "'Fallen Monuments and Contested Memorials' examines how the modification, destruction, or absence of monuments and memorials can be viewed as performative acts that challenge prescribed, embodied narratives in the public realm. Bringing together international, multidisciplinary approaches, the chapters in this volume interrogate the ways in which memorial constructions disclose implicitly and explicitly the proxy battle for public memory and identity, particularly since 2015. Acknowledging the ways in which the past — which is given agency through monuments and memorials — intrudes into daily life, this volume offers perspectives from researchers that answer questions about the roles of monuments and memorials as persistent, yet mutable, works whose meanings are not fixed but are, rather, subject to processes of continual re-interpretation. By using monuments and memorials as lenses through which to view race, memory, and the legacies of war, power, and subjugation, this volume demonstrates how these works, and their visible representations of entitlement, possession, control, and authority, can offer the opportunity to pose and answer questions about whose memory matters and what our symbols say about who we are and what we value. In ihnen finden sich metrische und harmonisch-melodische Konzepte sowie grundlegende Neuerungen in der Organisation des Zusammenspiels und im Umgang mit improvisierter Musik, die heute fester Bestandteil des Jazz sind. Der Autor geht den Ursprüngen und Vorläufern dieser Konzepte nach, untersucht die biografischen Bezüge der Protagonisten zu den Konzepten und zum Zeitgeist und betrachtet die Rezeptionsgeschichte der Alben.
    Abstract: The year 1959 saw the release of Dave Brubeck's "Time Out", John Coltrane's "Giant Steps", Miles Davis' "Kind of Blue", Bill Evans' "Portrait in Jazz" and Ornette Coleman's "The Shape of Jazz to Come", all style-defining albums that were groundbreaking in the development of jazz. They contain metrical and harmonic-melodic concepts as well as fundamental innovations in the organisation of ensemble playing and the handling of improvised music, which are an integral part of jazz today. The author traces the origins and antecedents of these concepts, examines the protagonists' biographical references to the concepts and the zeitgeist, and looks at the reception history of the albums.

Dieses Buch beschreibt nicht nur eindringlich die historischen und politischen Hintergründe sowie die Verfolgung dieser Menschen im Nationalsozialismus, sondern stellt auch dar, warum sie in der Bundesrepublik Deutschland jahrzehntelang von jeder moralischen und rechtlichen Anerkennung ausgeschlossen wurden - bis der Deutsche Bundestag sie 2020 mit 70jähriger Verspätung als Verfolgte des Nationalsozialismus anerkannte. In bewegenden Darstellungen von mehr als zwanzig Nachkommen, die die Geschichte ihres jeweiligen Vorfahren erzählen, werden erstmals in der erinnerungskulturellen Publikationsgeschichte die Biografien einzelner Verfolgter vorgestellt - es zeigt sich, wie das Trauma der verleugneten Opfer bis heute in den Familien wirkt.

    Abstract: This volume brings together a series of discussions by scholars from a range of disciplinary, (trans)regional and epistemic perspectives that came out of the Berlin-based "co2libri" networking initiative, with longstanding collaborative partners based in the global South. "Co2libri" stands for "conceptual collaboration: living borderless research interaction". As an interdisciplinary and transregional oriented initiative, co2libri envisages a multicentric perspective that integrates neglected positions of Southern theory and praxis into the heart of academic conversations. Co2libri’s collaborative endeavor builds on long-standing active connections with partners in Africa, South and Southeast Asia, and the Middle East. Instead of setting an agenda from the North, it proposes to figure out ways forward through collaborative engagement, building on relationships of mutual trust. Using formats that facilitate substantial and open-ended discussion, we are re-thinking theory and method, academic practices, and research ethics, while keeping material inequalities in view.

    Abstract: Depuis plusieurs décennies, le rapport à la mort et aux morts connaît une véritable mutation dans la société occidentale. Transformations des rites funéraires, notamment sous l’effet de la déchristianisation de l’Occident, diffusion d’un pluralisme religieux, pratiques individuelles en sont les traits les plus marquants. Mais c’est davantage l’acte de mourir, voire la définition même de la mort, qui semblent aujourd’hui changer radicalement. Cette mutation, profonde, n’est pourtant pas un fait nouveau. Elle n’est que le prolongement d’une autre transformation, plus ancienne, qui a touché l’ensemble du monde occidental dès le XVIIIe siècle, où l’on a commencé à déplacer et éloigner les sépultures à la périphérie des villes. La « transition » – si ce n’est la rupture – qui s’est alors produite en seulement quelques générations est venue bouleverser un régime funéraire qui s’était imposé depuis la fin de l’Antiquité, articulant des espaces destinés aux morts aux lieux sacrés, et faisant cohabiter les vivants et les défunts. Cet ouvrage vient analyser la manière dont s’est mis en place cet effacement progressif à travers les siècles, en tentant de dresser une histoire longue des rapports entre les vivants et les morts.

Jahrhunderts Geborenen ist, dass sie in ihrer Kindheit, in der Jugend und im mittleren Erwachsenenalter schwierige Lebensumstände – Krieg, Geldentwertung und politische Umbrüche – zu bewältigen hatten. Das Altern der Überlebenden fällt hingegen in eine anhaltende Friedenszeit zunehmenden Wohlstands. Dies unterscheidet sie von heutigen Generationen. Aus dem Zusammenspiel verschiedener Faktoren werden im Anschluss Determinanten des langen Lebens herausgearbeitet.

    Abstract: Examines why and how cultural encounters between East Asia and Europe are framed as failures Opens up fresh perspectives on intercultural encounters by focusing on failures as a paradigm Argues that a focus on failure helps to uncover the normative perspectives and expectations of intercultural encountersEstablishes that intercultural encounters add a valuable new perspective to the emerging field of failure studiesOften, the story of encounters between Asia and the West has been told as one of success, of cross-fertilization, reciprocal stimulation and an exchange of commodities and knowledge. Yet, the history of East-West encounters is riddled with prominent examples of misunderstandings, ignorance, unrealistic expectations or unbridgeable cultural differences. Bringing together scholars working across Chinese Studies, Japanese Studies, English Studies and French Studies, this book presents new perspectives on such instances by theorizing epistemologies of failure. Providing examples from different periods and disciplines, it reveals how culturally informed expectations and biases, performative and linguistic practices and imaginative horizons specific to the cultures involved shape notions of failure and success. Case studies range from first encounters in the early modern period to contemporary novels and focus on actual or imaginary encounters between East Asia and Western European cultures

    Abstract: "Through a historical and data-driven review of the US's dominant foreign policy trends from 1776 until today, America the Bully argues that since the end of the Cold War and especially post-9/11, the US has become addicted to military intervention. Lacking clear national strategic goals, the US now pursues a security whack-a-mole policy, more reactionary than deliberate. America the Bully dedicates a chapter to each defining era of US foreign policy, applying selected historical narratives, anecdotes of US foreign policy officials, case study examples, and compelling patterns derived from the data in the Military Intervention Project (MIP). Each chapter highlights the ways in which the US used and balanced primary tools of statecraft - War, Trade, and Diplomacy - to achieve its objectives. It showcases, however, that in recent decades, the US has heavily favored force over the other pillars of statecraft. The book concludes with a warning that if the US does not stem increasing trends of kinetic diplomacy, it may do irrevocable damage its diplomatic corps, dooming it to costly and often useless wars of choice. It may be doomed to the path of reactionary aggression, increasing its military footprint internationally to the detriment of its diplomatic and economic influence. If this trend continues, it could spell disaster for the US's image, credibility, and ultimately, its international and domestic stability"--

    Abstract: Under the Skin investigates the role of cross-cultural body modification in seventeenth-century and eighteenth-century North America, revealing that the practices of tattooing and scalping were crucial to interactions between Natives and newcomers. These permanent and painful marks could act as signs of alliance or signs of conflict, producing a complex bodily archive of cross-cultural entanglement.Indigenous body modification practices were adopted and transformed by colonial powers, making tattooing and scalping key forms of cultural and political contestation in early America. Although these bodily practices were quite distinct--one a painful but generally voluntary sign of accomplishment and affiliation, the other a violent assault on life and identity--they were linked by growing colonial perceptions that both were crucial elements of "Nativeness." Tracing the transformation of concepts of bodily integrity, personal and collective identities, and the sources of human difference, Under the Skin investigates both the lived physical experience and the contested metaphorical power of early American bodies.Struggling for power on battlefields, in diplomatic gatherings, and in intellectual exchanges, Native Americans and Anglo-Americans found their physical appearances dramatically altered by their interactions with one another. Contested ideas about the nature of human and societal difference translated into altered appearances for many early Americans. In turn, scars and symbols on skin prompted an outpouring of stories as people debated the meaning of such marks. Perhaps paradoxically, individuals with culturally ambiguous or hybrid appearances prompted increasing efforts to insist on permanent bodily identity. By the late eighteenth century, ideas about the body, phenotype, and culture were increasingly articulated in concepts of race.     Abstract: Mit der Geschichte des Rechts der Sharī῾a von Fikret Karčić liegt eine erste innerislamische Gesamtdarstellung der islamischen Rechtsgeschichte in deutscher Sprache vor. Nach einer methodologischen Einführung und einem Überblick über das Recht der vorislamischen Araber schließt sich eine Geschichte des Rechts der Sharī῾a an, die durch einen Abriss der islamischen Rechtsgeschichte auf dem Westbalkan ergänzt wird. In jedem Kapitel wird zunächst der geschichtliche und gesellschaftliche Rahmen umrissen, an dessen Darstellung sich Abschnitte zu den Rechtsquellen sowie zu Rechtswissenschaft und Rechtspraxis anschließen. Der Autor Prof. Dr. Fikret Karčić (1955-2022) lehrte Rechtsgeschichte an der Universität Sarajevo. Er war Mitglied des Präsidiums der islamischen Gemeinschaft von Bosnien und Herzegowina sowie von 2002 bis 2008 Präsident ihres Gerichtshofes. Darüber hinaus hatte er Gastprofessuren u. a. in lstanbul, Kuala Lumpur und Oslo inne. Der Herausgeber Dr. Jörg Imran Schröter leitete als Juniorprofessor 2015-2022 das Institut für Islamische Theologie/Religionspädagogik der Pädagogischen Hochschule Karlsruhe und ist im Schuldienst des Landes Baden-Württemberg tätig. Er forscht im Rahmen einer interreligiösen Friedensbildung u.a. zur Religiosität muslimischer Jugendlicher in der pluralen Gesellschaft. Der Übersetzer Andreas Maase ist Rechtsanwalt und Fachanwalt für Bau- und Architektenrecht in Ellwangen (Jagst). Er hat mehrere Schriften zur islamischen Rechtstheorie und Rechtsgeschichte aus dem Bosnischen ins Deutsche übersetzt.

    Abstract: This book adopts the rationalist research path to bring forward an innovative theory of foreign policy, and the central question is: How can we define the overall national interests of great powers appropriately and thus help states make consistent and rational grand strategies? The answer can't be found among existing Foreign Policy Analysis and other theoretical research. In this book, Positional Realism is proposed as a new theory to define the overall national interests from the power position and order position perspectives and specify the four kinds of positional interests of hegemonic states, contending states, potential contending states, and non-contending states. Different great powers have different positional power and order objectives. Based on these positional interests, Positional Realism brings different foreign policy hypotheses and suggestions. The book also examines the six great powers in the nineteenth century to verify these hypotheses and finds that Positional Realism can not only convincingly explain the success or failure of their acts, but also give useful and important directions for strategy making of great powers.

    Abstract: This book explores continuity and ruptures in the historical use of visual representations in science and related disciplines such as art history and anthropology. The book also considers more recent developments that attest to the unprecedented importance of scientific visualizations, such as video recordings, animations, simulations, graphs, and enhanced realities. The volume collects historical reflections concerned with the use of visual material, visualization, and vision in science from a historical perspective, ranging across multiple cultures from antiquity until present day. The focus is on visual representations such as drawings, prints, tables, mathematical symbols, photos, data visualizations, mapping processes, and (on a meta-level) visualizations of data extracted from historical sources to visually support the historical research itself. Continuity and ruptures between the past and present use of visual material are presented against the backdrop of the epistemic functions of visual material in science. The function of visual material is defined according to three major epistemic categories: exploration, transformation, and transmission of knowledge.

    Abstract: This open access handbook takes a comparative and global approach to analyse the practice of slavery throughout history. In order to understand slavery - why it developed, and how it functioned in various societies – is to understand an important and widespread practice in world civilisations. With research traditionally being dominated by the Atlantic world, this collection aims to illuminate slavery that existed in not only the Americas but also ancient, medieval, North and sub-Saharan African, Near Eastern, and Asian societies. Connecting civilisations through migration, warfare, trade routes and economic expansion, the practice of slavery integrated countries and regions through power-based relationships, whilst simultaneously dividing societies by class, race, ethnicity and cultural group. Uncovering slavery as a globalizing phenomenon, the authors highlight the slave-trading routes that crisscrossed Africa, helped integrate the Mediterranean world, connected Indian Ocean societies and fused the Atlantic world. Split into five parts, the handbook portrays the evolution of slavery from antiquity to the contemporary era and encourages readers to realise similarities and differences between various manifestations of slavery throughout history. Providing a truly global coverage of slavery, and including thematic injections within each chronological part, this handbook is a comprehensive and transnational resource for all researchers interested in slavery, the history of labour, and anthropology.     Abstract: This book investigates the phenomenon of overbalancing through an analysis of Japan’s foreign policy during the interbellum. In the mid-1930s, Japan withdrew from a naval arms control framework that had restrained military buildup on both sides of the Pacific Ocean since the early 1920s. By doing so, Japan not only triggered a naval arms race with the United States that exhausted its economy, it also destroyed the last institutionalized structure regulating the relationship between the two Pacific powers. Japan and the United States became caught in a spiral of tensions that culminated with the attack on Pearl Harbor in December 1941. Puzzling is the fact that the international environment in the Asia-Pacific was relatively stable in the mid-1930s, while Washington was pursuing a policy of accommodation toward Tokyo. By rejecting arms control and engaging in unfettered naval expansion, Japan overbalanced against the United States and began its rush to the Pacific War. The book explains Japan’s overbalancing with a neoclassical realist model that combines the literatures on threat perception and civil-military relations. Amid the Manchurian crisis of 1931-1933, as the Japanese government collaborated with the military institution to address the situation in China, military influence on the formulation of foreign policy surged. The perceptual and policy biases of the military, which include the tendency to distrust other countries’ intentions, to adopt worst-case analyses of international dynamics and to strive to maximize military power, gradually penetrated the decision-making process. Dysfunctions in the preexisting structure of Japanese civil-military relations, engendered by an over-depoliticization of the military institution, allowed the navy to convince policymakers that the United States was inherently hostile to Japan, hence the necessity to prepare for war. The government was brainstormed, adopting the biased military perspective on international affairs. Japan overbalanced in a myopic but conscious way. Lionel P.     Abstract: This book analyses the historical sociology of state formation in the Horn of Africa. It examines the genesis, trajectories, processes, routes and consequences of the evolution of state formation. Three analytical and explanatory models explain the process of state formation in the HOA: proto-state, colonial and national liberation. The models, heuristically and innovatively, provide understanding, interpretation and analysis of state formation. While the proto-state model explicates an indigenous historical process of state formation, the colonial model refers to an externally designed and imposed process of state formation. The national liberation model concern state formation conducted under liberation movement and ideology. The distinct significance of these models is that collectively they generate sufficient analysis of state formation. They are also unique in that they have never been employed as aggregate analytical and explicative instruments to address the predicament of state formation in the Horn of Africa. Redie Bereketeab is Associate Professor of Sociology and Senior Researcher at the Nordic Africa Institute at Uppsala University, Sweden. His latest publications include: National Liberation Movements as Government in Africa (2019), and Alternatives to Neoliberal Peacebuilding and Statebuilding in Africa (2021).     Abstract: This book traces the development of U.S-led global nuclear non-proliferation diplomacy during the three decades since the Eisenhower’s “Atoms for Peace” in 1953. The U.S. non-proliferation efforts had diverse obstacles. It had to prevent nuclear states’ export of nuclear technology while dissuading non-nuclear states from developing nuclear weapons. In addition, building non-proliferation regime was not always its top foreign policy priority. To understand the complex process of non-proliferation, the book examines the relations among three different actors in the nuclear field: a global non-proliferation regime builder (U.S.), a potential nuclear proliferator (France) and a would-be nuclear state (Republic of Korea). In tracing how they developed nuclear strategies, conflicting and compromising with one another, the book pays special attention to how the transforming Cold War structure in the 1970s not only affected foreign policies of the involved countries but also complicated their relationship. The exploration ultimately highlights the multidimensional nature of international discussion on nuclear non-proliferation as the ROK’s nuclear development attempts, U.S. non-proliferation efforts, and the U.S.-France nuclear technology cooperation in the 1970s were all deeply connected. .

    Abstract: Die Aufrechterhaltung der Erinnerung an die Opfer von Krieg und Gewaltherrschaft, an Widerstand, Flucht und Vertreibung wird heute überwiegend als eine gesamtgesellschaftliche Aufgabe wahrgenommen und nicht als eine alleinige Prärogative des Staates. Dennoch ist öffentliches Erinnern und Gedenken als Bestandteil des kulturstaatlichen Auftrags von Bund, Ländern und Kommunen anerkannt. Der Umgang des Staates und seiner Institutionen mit (schmerzhafter) Vergangenheit und den Orten, an denen die Erinnerung an diese Vergangenheit „haftet“, ist zwar seit Jahren Gegenstand intensiver Forschung. Die verwaltungsrechtliche und verwaltungshistorische Perspektive ist dabei jedoch deutlich unterrepräsentiert gewesen. Nicht nur Fragen der Aufgabenverteilung zwischen den staatlichen und den zivilgesellschaftlichen Akteuren, sondern auch die Kompetenzen, Organisationsformen und Entscheidungsmaßstäbe der mit Erinnerungsaufgaben befassten Behörden und Einrichtungen sind bislang nur punktuell beleuchtet worden. Sind der Bund und die Länder allein als Förderer oder Koordinatoren für kommunale und zivilgesellschaftliche erinnerungskulturelle Aktivitäten gefragt? Besteht ein Handlungsbedarf für die Schaffung einer zentralen – zumindest einer überörtlichen – erinnerungskulturellen Infrastruktur? Bedürfen Gedenkstätten und andere Erinnerungsorte eines spezifischen ordnungsrechtlichen Schutzes? Wie kann die Sicherstellung des Pietätsschutzes an Orten des Gedenkens verfassungskonform ausgestaltet werden? Erfordert ein angemessener Umgang mit flächenhaften Zeugnissen der deutschen Vergangenheit wie dem Westwall und den Relikten des „Eisernen Vorhangs“ besondere rechtliche Vorkehrungen? Diese Lücke soll der vorliegende Band füllen, der im Rahmen eines von der Hochschule für Polizei und öffentliche Verwaltung des Landes Nordrhein-Westfalen geförderten Projekts entstanden ist. Autor:innen des Bandes sind Jurist:innen und Historiker:innen aus den Bereichen Lehre, Forschung und Verwaltung.     Abstract: This book analyzes conflicting notions of identity and belonging in contemporary Europe. Addressing the creation, negotiation, and (re)use of diverse spaces and places of belonging, the book examines their fascinating complexities in the context of a changing Europe. Taking an innovative interdisciplinary approach, the volume examines renegotiations of belonging played out through cultural encounters with difference and change, in diverse public spaces and contested places. Highlighting the interconnections between social change and culture, heritage, and memory, the chapters analyze multilayered public spaces and the negotiations over culture and belonging that are connected to them. Through analyses of diverse case studies, the editors and authors draw out the significance of the participation or exclusion of differing community, grassroots, and activist groups in such practices and discourses of belonging in relation to the contemporary emergence of identity conflicts and political uses of the past across Europe. They analyze the ways in which people’s sense of belonging is connected to cultural, heritage, and memory practices undertaken in different public spaces, including museums, cultural and community centres, city monuments and built heritage, neglected urban spaces, and online fora. This book provides a valuable contribution to the existing bodies of work on identities, migration, public space, memory, and heritage.
