Wie sehr die Beiträger_innen des Bandes infolgedessen durch die Etablierung der Historischen Kulturwissenschaften, die Öffnung vorher verschlossener Archive und nicht zuletzt vorher ungekannter Reisefreiheiten profitiert haben, zeigen ihre Stadtgeschichten: Auf der Basis kulturhistorischer Fragestellungen etwa zur Musealisierung und Monumentalisierung, zur Repräsentativität oder zur Multikulturalität im osteuropäischen urbanen Raum geben sie Einblicke in die Geschichte von Metropolen wie Prag, Baku, Moskau oder St. Petersburg und regionalen Zentren wie Lemberg oder Irkutsk
    Abstract: 25 years after the fall of the wall and ten years after the eastward expansion of the EU - these politically significant events have also fundamentally altered historical research on Eastern Europe. The extent to which the contributors to this volume have benefitted as a result of the establishment of historical cultural studies, the opening of previously sealed archives and more importantly, from a hitherto unknown freedom of movement, is shown in their urban histories: based on cultural-historical interrogations into »museification« and monumentalization, on representativeness or multiculturalism in the Eastern European urban sphere, they offer insights into the history of metropolises like Prague, Baku, Moscow or St Petersburg, and regional centers like Lviv or Irkutsk

    Abstract: There are often blanket claims that the world is facing more problems than ever but there is a lack of empirical data to show where things have deteriorated or in fact improved.     Abstract: Focussing European borders: The book provides insight into a variety of changes in the nature of borders in Europe and its neighborhood from various disciplinary perspectives.     Abstract: Anglo-Saxon elves [Old English 〈I〉 ælfe〈/I〉] are one of the best attested non-Christian beliefs in early medieval Europe, but current interpretations of the evidence derive directly from outdated nineteenth- and early twentieth-century scholarship. Integrating linguistic and textual approaches into an anthropologically-inspired framework, this book reassesses the full range of evidence. It traces continuities and changes in medieval non-Christian beliefs with a new degree of reliability, from pre-conversion times to the eleventh century and beyond, and uses comparative material from medieval Ireland and Scandinavia to argue for a dynamic relationship between beliefs and society. In particular, it interprets the cultural significance of elves as a cause of illness in medical texts, and provides new insights into the much-discussed Scandinavian magic of 〈I〉seidr〈/I〉.     Abstract: A fundamental issue in society today, migration has been undergoing a new dynamic transformation, calling for new policy approaches. This new dynamic is not yet understood clearly, let alone that adequate policy answers for 'the managing' of these new migration processes and the consequences for receiving and sending societies are within. This comprehensive overview of migration research conducted throughout the IMISCoe network of European research analyses the influx of various types of immigrants in Western Europe post World War II, mostly to large cities, as well as the reactions of the native populations and governments to the changes and pressures brought about by immigration.
    Abstract: Internationale migratie en integratie zijn hete hangijzers in Europa. Het aantal migranten is de afgelopen decennia toegenomen, maar ook het fenomeen migratie zelf is veranderd, evenals de ontvangende samenlevingen en de landen van herkomst. De nieuwe dynamiek die deze veranderingen tot gevolg hebben wordt nog niet begrepen, laat staan dat de politiek adequate antwoorden heeft op de nieuwe vragen. In deze publicatie wordt een overzicht gepresenteerd van het IMISCoe onderzoek en wordt de lijn uitgezet voor toekomstig onderzoek. Hierbij worden cruciale vragen beantwoord die opkomen in het tijdperk van globalisering. Waarom zijn het Westen, en dan met name de grote westerse steden, zo aantrekkelijk voor verschillende soorten immigranten? Hoe hebben staten en samenlevingen gereageerd op de combinatie van interne, sociale, economische en politieke veranderingen, globalisering en de groeiende internationale migratie? En op welke manier is deze reactie op zijn beurt van invloed op migratie- en vestigingsprocessen?

Spanning two million years of human evolution, this book explores the impact of economics on human evolution and natural history. The theory of evolution by natural selection has always relied in part on progress in areas of science outside biology. By applying economic principles at the borderlines of biology, Haim Ofek shows how some of the outstanding issues in human evolution, such as the increase in human brain size and the expansion of the environmental niche humans occupied, can be answered. He identifies distinct economic forces at work, beginning with the transition from the feed-as-you-go strategy of primates, through hunter-gathering and the domestication of fire to the development of agriculture. This highly readable book will inform and intrigue general readers and those in fields such as evolutionary biology and psychology, economics, and anthropology

    Note: The years 1989/1990 saw the fall of the Iron Curtain. Following forty years of significant restrictions, legal and non-bureaucratic travel from East-Central and Eastern European countries was once again possible and travelling and returning to those countries became just as easy. Immediately following the end of the East-West conflict, people from East-Central and Eastern European countries took advantage of their new freedom of travel. Many sought to emigrate to Western countries. However, when faced with such immigration, the euphoria which met the end of the political divisions in the West evaporated quickly. Several polls and surveys, projections and prognoses served to unsettle people more than the reality of immigration. This gave rise to a sometimes blind and specious – yet nevertheless politically effective – fear of a new mass migration of peoples. , Now, more than ten years after the fall of the Iron Curtain, the actual scale and development of the East-West migration in Europe be clearly evaluated. This book attempts to do just that, including a comprehensive overview and eleven country-specific chapters. Each chapter includes a historical review, an account of the most important changes since 1989/1990 and a forecast of future migration developments.〈p〉1989/90 fiel der Eiserne Vorhang. Nach mehr als 40 Jahren erheblicher Einschränkungen wurde die legale und unbürokratische Anreise aus den Staaten Ostmittel- und Osteuropas wieder möglich. Es entstand eine teilweise unreflektierte und vordergründige, aber politisch höchst wirksame Angst vor einer neuen Völkerwanderung in Europa.     Abstract: The birthplace of the nation-state and modern nationalism at the end of the eighteenth century, Europe was supposed to be their graveyard at the end of the twentieth. Yet, far from moving beyond the nation-state, fin-de-siècle Europe has been moving back to the nation-state, most spectacularly with the disintegration of the Soviet Union, Yugoslavia, and Czechoslovakia into a score of nationally defined successor states. This massive reorganisation of political space along national lines has engendered distinctive, dynamically interlocking, and in some cases explosive forms of nationalism. Drawing on Pierre Bourdieu and the 'new institutionalist' sociology, and comparing contemporary nationalisms with those of interwar Europe, Rogers Brubaker provides a theoretically sophisticated and historically rich account of one of the most important problems facing the 'New Europe'

    Abstract: This case study of the structure of power and ruling-class domination in the heart of the sertão of Northeast Brazil is based upon six field trips over a period of fifteen years. Analysis of the political economy of Juazeiro, Bahia, and Petrolina, Pernambuco - two contiguous towns along the São Francisco River - focuses on the history of patriarchal families, ruling class, and patrimonial governments. Family dominance is related to the rise of the Coelhos in Petrolina and the decline of the Vianas in Juazeiro. Agressive tactics and links to Recife allowed the Coelhos to expand and assume control over most commerce in Petrolina and neighbouring municipalities to Juazeiro. In both situations the intervention of the state in the region, usually bolstered by international credits, affected traditional standards of living. The construction of the Sobradinho Dam, for example, brought problems for small farmers along the banks of the São Francisco who could no longer count on the natural flow of river water. State policy also favored corporations to the detriment of small producers on cooperative farms

    Abstract: This book follows the social, economic and demographic transformations of the Alpine area from the late Middle Ages. Its aim is to reassess the image of the upland community which emerges from the work of historians, geographers and social anthropologists. The book therefore deals at length with such problems as the causes and consequences of emigration and patterns of marriage and inheritance in favouring or hampering the adjustments of local populations to changing economic or ecological circumstances, and tackles the vexed question of the relative importance of cultural and environmental factors in shaping family forms and community structures. Although its foundation lies in a long period of anthropological fieldwork conducted in an Alpine community, Upland Communities relies on the methods and conceptual tools of historical demography. Combined with a long-term historical perspective, its broad comparative approach unveils an unexpected diversity in regional and spatial demographic patterns and questions a number of deep-rooted but ultimately misleading notions concerning mountain society and its alleged backwardness in the past

    Abstract: This book examines how transformations in Brazil's social, economic and political organization affect the demographic behaviour of people who live in different parts of the country and who occupy different positions in the social system. The authors review the history of unequal development and document the concentration of income and land ownership. Using data from the 1970 and 1980 censuses, they show how the Brazilian style of economic growth unequally affected different population subgroups. Mortality estimates for white and non-white people measure the consequences of racial inequality on the life chances of children. Other chapters investigate rural out-migration, the impact of Amazon colonization schemes on rural poverty, and the implications of differential rates of population growth among rich and poor households for future patterns of inequality and underemployment. The overall perspective places the concept of inequality at the centre of the study of demographic and structural change
