    Kurzfassung: Die Polizeiführung bemüht sich seit geraumer Zeit um die Einstellung von Menschen mit Migrationshintergrund und um eine Erhöhung des Frauenanteils in den eigenen Reihen. Dies führt - zumindest in Bezug auf Geschlecht – zu einem rapiden Wandel in der Zusammensetzung des Personals. Sonja M. Dudek untersucht, wie Polizistinnen und Polizisten organisationsinterne Veränderungsprozesse in Bezug auf mehr Heterogenität kommentieren, reflektieren und bewerten. Der Schwerpunkt der empirischen Untersuchung liegt auf der Analyse polizeitypischer Umgangsweisen mit Vielfalt. Für die vorliegende Untersuchung erhielt die Autorin den Preis der Deutschen Hochschule der Polizei 2007.

    Kurzfassung: The Straight State is the most expansive study of the federal regulation of homosexuality yet written. Unearthing startling new evidence from the National Archives, Margot Canaday shows how the state systematically came to penalize homosexuality, giving rise to a regime of second-class citizenship that sexual minorities still live under today. Canaday looks at three key arenas of government control--immigration, the military, and welfare--and demonstrates how federal enforcement of sexual norms emerged with the rise of the modern bureaucratic state. She begins at the turn of the twentieth century when the state first stumbled upon evidence of sex and gender nonconformity, revealing how homosexuality was policed indirectly through the exclusion of sexually "degenerate" immigrants and other regulatory measures aimed at combating poverty, violence, and vice. Canaday argues that the state's gradual awareness of homosexuality intensified during the later New Deal and through the postwar period as policies were enacted that explicitly used homosexuality to define who could enter the country, serve in the military, and collect state benefits. Midcentury repression was not a sudden response to newly visible gay subcultures, Canaday demonstrates, but the culmination of a much longer and slower process of state-building during which the state came to know and to care about homosexuality across many decades. Social, political, and legal history at their most compelling, The Straight State explores how regulation transformed the regulated: in drawing boundaries around national citizenship, the state helped to define the very meaning of homosexuality in America.

    Beschreibung / Inhaltsverzeichnis: Im 19. und frühen 20. Jahrhundert hat die erste Frauenbewegung mit der Verankerung eigens Frauen vorbehaltener Bildungs- und Berufsbereiche zur Durchsetzung eines differenzbezogenen Musters der Fraueninklusion beigetragen. In der zweiten Hälfte des 20. Jahrhunderts hingegen tritt die zweite Frauenbewegung für ein uneingeschränktes Recht auf Gleichheit ein. Das Buch führt diesen Wandel von Differenz zu Gleichheit auf konstitutive Zusammenhänge zwischen mobilisierungsfähigen Semantiken der Frauenbewegungen und Prozessen der Binnendifferenzierung des politischen Systems zurück. Seit den 1960er Jahren ist mit den modernen Volksparteien ein Staat entstanden, der der Garantie gesellschaftlicher Teilnahmerechte der Gesamtbevölkerung verpflichtet ist. Schichtung verliert als soziale Konfliktlinie an Bedeutung. Erst diese Entwicklung verhilft dem Anspruch der individuellen und sozialen Gleichheit der Geschlechter und dem Muster einer geschlechtsunabhängigen Inklusion zum Durchbruch

    Beschreibung / Inhaltsverzeichnis: Am Kreuzungspunkt der Diskurse um Nation und Raum entstanden Ende des 19. Jahrhunderts Konzepte von Grenzen, die keine Linien mehr waren, sondern Räume. Dies war die Grundlage eines Raumbildes, das Deutschland nicht nur über seine Staats-, sondern auch über die deutsche Sprachgrenze hinaus vergrößerte. Der Band untersucht diese Transformation der Grenzen am Beispiel der deutschen Westgrenze. Anknüpfend an den antifranzösischen Nationsentwurf der Politischen Romantik und die wissenschaftliche Bestimmung der westlichen Sprachgrenze werden die Konzepte »Westmark«, »Westland« und »Westraum« rekonstruiert. Von den alldeutschen, jungkonservativen und nationalsozialistischen Diskursgemeinschaften geprägt, bezeichneten diese einen deutschen Grenzraum, der von der Kanal- und Nordseeküste bis zu den französischen Alpen und zur Rhône reichte, zugleich jedoch in hohem Maße symbolisch und ideologisch aufgeladen war. Als Gegenstück zum »Ostland« wurde dieses Raumkonstrukt zum Leitbild deutscher Kriegsziel- und Germanisierungspolitik und zu einem Symbolraum des »Neuen Europa« der SS.

    Kurzfassung: Written by a senior scholar and master mariner, Sailors and Traders is the first comprehensive account of the maritime peoples of the Pacific. It focuses on the sailors who led the exploration and settlement of the islands and New Zealand and their seagoing descendants, providing along the way new material and unique observations on traditional and commercial seagoing against the background of major periods in Pacific history. The book begins by detailing the traditions of sailors, a group whose way of life sets them apart. Like all others who live and work at sea, Pacific mariners face the challenges of an often harsh environment, endure separation from their families for months at a time, revere their vessels, and share a singular attitude to risk and death. The period of prehistoric seafaring is discussed using archaeological data, interpretations from inter island exchanges, experimental voyaging, and recent DNA analysis. Sections on the arrival of foreign exploring ships centuries later concentrate on relations between visiting sailors and maritime communities. The more intrusive influx of commercial trading and whaling ships brought new technology, weapons, and differences in the ethics of trade. The successes and failures of Polynesian chiefs who entered trading with European-type ships are recounted as neglected aspects of Pacific history. As foreign-owned commercial ships expanded in the region so did colonialism, which was accompanied by an increase in the number of sailors from metropolitan countries and a decrease in the employment of Pacific islanders on foreign ships. Eventually small-scale island entrepreneurs expanded inter island shipping, and in 1978 the regional Pacific Forum Line was created by newly independent states. This was welcomed as a symbolic return to indigenous Pacific ocean linkages. The book's final sections detail the life of the modern Pacific seafarer. Most Pacific sailors in the global maritime labor market return home after many months at sea, bringing money, goods, a wider perspective of the world, and sometimes new diseases. Each of these impacts is analyzed, particularly in the case of Kiribati, a major supplier of labor to foreign ships

    Kurzfassung: In a bold rethinking of the Hollywood blacklist and McCarthyite America, Joseph Litvak reveals a political regime that did not end with the 1950s or even with the Cold War: a regime of compulsory sycophancy, in which the good citizen is an informer, ready to denounce anyone who will not play the part of the earnest, patriotic American. While many scholars have noted the anti-Semitism underlying the House Un-American Activities Committee's (HUAC's) anti-Communism, Litvak draws on the work of Theodor W. Adorno, Hannah Arendt, Alain Badiou, and Max Horkheimer to show how the committee conflated Jewishness with what he calls "comic cosmopolitanism," an intolerably seductive happiness, centered in Hollywood and New York, in show business and intellectual circles. He maintains that HUAC took the comic irreverence of the "uncooperative" witnesses as a crime against an American identity based on self-repudiation and the willingness to "name names"

At the end of arduous sea and land journeys, and en route, Europeans met people who challenged their assumptions and certainties about the world. Some sought riches, others allies; some looked for Christian converts and some aimed for conquest. Others experienced the forced cultural encounter of exile. Many travelled only in imagination, forming ideas which have become foundational to modern mentalities: race, ethnicity, nation, and the nature of humanity. The consequences were profound: both productive and destructive. At the beginning of the third millennium CE we occupy a world shaped by those centuries of travel and encounter. This collection examines key themes and moments in European cultural expansion. Unlike many studies it spans both the medieval and early modern periods, challenging the stereotype of the post-Columbus 'age of discovery'.     Beschreibung / Inhaltsverzeichnis: In Zeiten transkultureller Bewegungen erweist sich die Literatur, die sich aus verschiedenen Gründen nicht in nationale Grenzen einpassen lässt, als ein zentrales Untersuchungsfeld: Kulturelle Veränderungen, die durch Migration von Menschen, Ideen, Waren und Sprachen entstehen, lassen sich hier auf eine umfassende Weise analysieren. In aktuellen Fallstudien untersuchen die Beiträge dieses Bandes unter anderem kulturelle Grenzziehungen in muslimischen bzw. türkischen Gemeinschaften und setzen sich dabei mit dem neuen »Zwang zur Kultur« auseinander. Daran anschließend wird der Begriff »Weltliteratur« auf seine Brauchbarkeit in diesen Kontexten untersucht, insbesondere im Hinblick auf nicht-europäische, etwa afrikanische Repräsentationsmodelle von Literatur. Einzelanalysen von Filmen und literarischen Texten zeigen, dass die so genannte Migrationsliteratur eine ästhetische Reflexion auf kulturelle Integration einerseits, aber auch auf verschiedene Formen von sozialer, individueller und sprachlicher Desintegration andererseits ist. Der Band wird ergänzt durch zwei Interviews mit Ilja Trojanow und Feridun Zaimoglu

    Kurzfassung: Along the Archival Grain offers a unique methodological and analytic opening to the affective registers of imperial governance and the political content of archival forms. In a series of nuanced mediations on the nature of colonial documents from the nineteenth-century Netherlands Indies, Ann Laura Stoler identifies the social epistemologies that guided perception and practice, revealing the problematic racial ontologies of that confused epistemic space. Navigating familiar and extraordinary paths through the lettered lives of those who ruled, she seizes on moments when common sense failed and prevailing categories no longer seemed to work. She asks not what colonial agents knew, but what happened when what they thought they knew they found they did not. Rejecting the notion that archival labor be approached as an extractive enterprise, Stoler sets her sights on archival production as a consequential act of governance, as a field of force with violent effect, and not least as a vivid space to do ethnography

    Kurzfassung: "The model I have drawn here attempts to accommodate both time and space. It may appear similar to the more old-fashioned 'Chinese world order, ' and indeed there are some similarities, but that older model failed to account for change over time and was, first and foremost, concerned with diplomatic relations. The model of the Sinosphere attempts to embrace intraregional relations in all their varying cultural and political complexities. The nature of Sino-Japanese ties may have been altogether different in the last third of the nineteenth century from what they were within the Sinosphere, but memory of the bond that had long linked China and Japan, I would argue, remained, if only as a lingering recollection. The Treaty of Amity, signed in 1871 ... bespeaks a time when respect worked both ways-a graded respect, to be sure, but nonetheless something tying the two states other than power and military obligations."--Jacket

Ihre Relevanz verdankt sie, so die These dieses interdisziplinären Bandes, einer Entwicklung, durch die sie sich aus der Bindung an die großen Schulen und Theorien des 20. Jahrhunderts befreit hat, um ihre Vorgehensweise konsequent an der Heterogenität ihres Materials auszurichten und sich damit ihrer eigentlichen Aufgabe zu widmen: der Erforschung der das Wissen strukturierenden Begriffssemantiken und ihrer Wanderungsbewegungen zwischen den unterschiedlichsten Disziplinen der Natur- und Geisteswissenschaften. Die vorliegenden Studien, u.a. zu Begriffen wie Funktion, Katastrophe, Triebfeder und Pfropfen, belegen einmal mehr die Leistungsfähigkeit dieses Ansatzes
