    Abstract: Die Polizeiführung bemüht sich seit geraumer Zeit um die Einstellung von Menschen mit Migrationshintergrund und um eine Erhöhung des Frauenanteils in den eigenen Reihen. Dies führt - zumindest in Bezug auf Geschlecht – zu einem rapiden Wandel in der Zusammensetzung des Personals. Sonja M. Dudek untersucht, wie Polizistinnen und Polizisten organisationsinterne Veränderungsprozesse in Bezug auf mehr Heterogenität kommentieren, reflektieren und bewerten. Der Schwerpunkt der empirischen Untersuchung liegt auf der Analyse polizeitypischer Umgangsweisen mit Vielfalt.     Abstract: The Straight State is the most expansive study of the federal regulation of homosexuality yet written. Unearthing startling new evidence from the National Archives, Margot Canaday shows how the state systematically came to penalize homosexuality, giving rise to a regime of second-class citizenship that sexual minorities still live under today. Canaday looks at three key arenas of government control--immigration, the military, and welfare--and demonstrates how federal enforcement of sexual norms emerged with the rise of the modern bureaucratic state. She begins at the turn of the twentieth century when the state first stumbled upon evidence of sex and gender nonconformity, revealing how homosexuality was policed indirectly through the exclusion of sexually "degenerate" immigrants and other regulatory measures aimed at combating poverty, violence, and vice. Canaday argues that the state's gradual awareness of homosexuality intensified during the later New Deal and through the postwar period as policies were enacted that explicitly used homosexuality to define who could enter the country, serve in the military, and collect state benefits. Midcentury repression was not a sudden response to newly visible gay subcultures, Canaday demonstrates, but the culmination of a much longer and slower process of state-building during which the state came to know and to care about homosexuality across many decades. Social, political, and legal history at their most compelling, The Straight State explores how regulation transformed the regulated: in drawing boundaries around national citizenship, the state helped to define the very meaning of homosexuality in America.

    Description / Table of Contents: Im 19. und frühen 20. Jahrhundert hat die erste Frauenbewegung mit der Verankerung eigens Frauen vorbehaltener Bildungs- und Berufsbereiche zur Durchsetzung eines differenzbezogenen Musters der Fraueninklusion beigetragen. In der zweiten Hälfte des 20. Jahrhunderts hingegen tritt die zweite Frauenbewegung für ein uneingeschränktes Recht auf Gleichheit ein. Das Buch führt diesen Wandel von Differenz zu Gleichheit auf konstitutive Zusammenhänge zwischen mobilisierungsfähigen Semantiken der Frauenbewegungen und Prozessen der Binnendifferenzierung des politischen Systems zurück. Seit den 1960er Jahren ist mit den modernen Volksparteien ein Staat entstanden, der der Garantie gesellschaftlicher Teilnahmerechte der Gesamtbevölkerung verpflichtet ist. Schichtung verliert als soziale Konfliktlinie an Bedeutung. Erst diese Entwicklung verhilft dem Anspruch der individuellen und sozialen Gleichheit der Geschlechter und dem Muster einer geschlechtsunabhängigen Inklusion zum Durchbruch

    Description / Table of Contents: Am Kreuzungspunkt der Diskurse um Nation und Raum entstanden Ende des 19. Jahrhunderts Konzepte von Grenzen, die keine Linien mehr waren, sondern Räume. Dies war die Grundlage eines Raumbildes, das Deutschland nicht nur über seine Staats-, sondern auch über die deutsche Sprachgrenze hinaus vergrößerte. Der Band untersucht diese Transformation der Grenzen am Beispiel der deutschen Westgrenze. Anknüpfend an den antifranzösischen Nationsentwurf der Politischen Romantik und die wissenschaftliche Bestimmung der westlichen Sprachgrenze werden die Konzepte »Westmark«, »Westland« und »Westraum« rekonstruiert. Von den alldeutschen, jungkonservativen und nationalsozialistischen Diskursgemeinschaften geprägt, bezeichneten diese einen deutschen Grenzraum, der von der Kanal- und Nordseeküste bis zu den französischen Alpen und zur Rhône reichte, zugleich jedoch in hohem Maße symbolisch und ideologisch aufgeladen war. Als Gegenstück zum »Ostland« wurde dieses Raumkonstrukt zum Leitbild deutscher Kriegsziel- und Germanisierungspolitik und zu einem Symbolraum des »Neuen Europa« der SS.

    Abstract: This volume includes 24 studies on comparative culture analysis in the Southeastern-European and Mediterrean area, as practizised in the "Ethnologia europaea" of Leopold Kretzenbacher, giving an idea of the plurality of possible topics and issues of folk culture in history and presence of this oldest part of Europe, which has not yet been really explored by interested readers. In t erms of subjects and methods these studies are partly located beyond the traditional thematical set of folklore studies: theoretical and terminological problems are discussed, cultural history since the late antiquity is involved, theological issues come together with research facts on customs and rites, masques and disguisings, issues of gender studies and sociology af ages are brought together with methodological critics on comparativism of the Victorian school of ethnography, the competitions of tournament are analyzed in historical and functional context as symbols of power and superiority of Venice in the Eastern Mediterrean, folk plays are examined as prefigurating structures of elaborated forms of folk theatre as well as the influences of Byzantine ecclesiastic painting and iconography on orthodox folk culture; other chapters focus on ethnosteretyps, on forms and functions of blood brotherhood (adoptio in fratrem) since late antiquity, the ways of reception of popular reading material throughout the Balkan peninsula since the 16th century are presented. Other studies are dedicated to the formation of religious traditions in West and East, between Catholicism and Orthodoxy, to fairy tales between orality and literacy, but also topics like the public display of personal feelings, forms of gestures, figures of demonology, narratives of oral autobiography, etymological and semantic questions are examined and research projects on oral folk literature are presented. One chapter is also dedicated to the ideological use of folklore studies in the nineteenth century. Chapters 15-24 focus more sepcifically on Greece without lacking wider comparative views.The Introduction and the Conclusion, the selected bibliography at the end of the volume and the indices integrate these chapters in a unique perspective.     Abstract: The horrific tragedies of Central Africa in the 1990s riveted the attention of the world. But these crises did not occur in a historical vacuum. By peering through the mists of the past, the case studies presented in The Land Beyond the Mists illustrate the significant advances to have taken place since decolonization in our understanding of the pre-colonial histories of Rwanda, Burundi, and eastern Congo. Based on both oral and written sources, these essays are important both for their methods-viewing history from the perspective of local actors-and for their conclusions, which seriously challenge colonial myths about the area

    Description / Table of Contents: In Zeiten transkultureller Bewegungen erweist sich die Literatur, die sich aus verschiedenen Gründen nicht in nationale Grenzen einpassen lässt, als ein zentrales Untersuchungsfeld: Kulturelle Veränderungen, die durch Migration von Menschen, Ideen, Waren und Sprachen entstehen, lassen sich hier auf eine umfassende Weise analysieren. In aktuellen Fallstudien untersuchen die Beiträge dieses Bandes unter anderem kulturelle Grenzziehungen in muslimischen bzw. türkischen Gemeinschaften und setzen sich dabei mit dem neuen »Zwang zur Kultur« auseinander. Daran anschließend wird der Begriff »Weltliteratur« auf seine Brauchbarkeit in diesen Kontexten untersucht, insbesondere im Hinblick auf nicht-europäische, etwa afrikanische Repräsentationsmodelle von Literatur. Einzelanalysen von Filmen und literarischen Texten zeigen, dass die so genannte Migrationsliteratur eine ästhetische Reflexion auf kulturelle Integration einerseits, aber auch auf verschiedene Formen von sozialer, individueller und sprachlicher Desintegration andererseits ist.     Abstract: Along the Archival Grain offers a unique methodological and analytic opening to the affective registers of imperial governance and the political content of archival forms. In a series of nuanced mediations on the nature of colonial documents from the nineteenth-century Netherlands Indies, Ann Laura Stoler identifies the social epistemologies that guided perception and practice, revealing the problematic racial ontologies of that confused epistemic space. Navigating familiar and extraordinary paths through the lettered lives of those who ruled, she seizes on moments when common sense failed and prevailing categories no longer seemed to work. She asks not what colonial agents knew, but what happened when what they thought they knew they found they did not. Rejecting the notion that archival labor be approached as an extractive enterprise, Stoler sets her sights on archival production as a consequential act of governance, as a field of force with violent effect, and not least as a vivid space to do ethnography

As the Qajar dynasty sought to integrate the peoples on its margins into the state, the British Empire made commercial inroads into the once inaccessible mountains on the frontier between Iran and Iraq. The distance between the state and the tribes was narrowed through imperial projects that included the building of a road through the mountains, the gathering of geographical and ethnographic information, and the exploration for oil, which culminated during the Iranian Constitutional Revolution. These modern projects assimilated autonomous pastoral nomadic tribes on the peripheries of Qajar Iran into a wider imperial territory and the world economy. Tribal subjects did not remain passive amidst these changes in environment and society, however, and projects of empire in the hinterlands of Iran were always mediated through encounters, accommodation, and engagement with the tribes. In contrast to the range of literature on the urban classes and political center in Qajar Iran, Arash Khazeni adopts a view from the Bakhtiyari tents on the periphery. Drawing upon Persian chronicles, tribal histories, and archival sources from London, Tehran, and Isfahan, this book opens new ground by approaching nineteenth-century Iran from its edge and placing the tribal periphery at the heart of a tale about empire and assimilation in the modern Middle East. --From publisher's description

Founded on a commitment to expression and community, the annual weeklong festival presents unique challenges to its organizers. Over four years Katherine K. Chen regularly participated in organizing efforts to safely and successfully create a temporary community in the middle of the desert under the hot August sun. Enabling Creative Chaos tracks how a small, underfunded group of organizers transformed into an unconventional corporation with a ten-million-dollar budget and two thousand volunteers. Over the years, Burning Man's organizers have experimented with different management models; learned how to recruit, motivate, and retain volunteers; and developed strategies to handle regulatory agencies and respond to media coverage.
