    Abstract: Am Beispiel des multiethnischen Küstenlandes Österreich-Ungarn und anhand einer großen und neuen Quellenbasis zeigt Péter Techet eine katholische Kirche, in der die Konflikte auf den sozialen Interessen marginalisierter Schichten beruhen. Das Narrativ einer nationalistisch auseinandergefallenen Habsburgermonarchie wird dadurch infrage gestellt.     Abstract: Der zweisprachige Sammelband vereinigt zum Teil bahnbrechende Ergebnisse einer interdisziplinären Forschungstagung, deren Beiträge sozial-, wirtschafts-, kultur- und kirchengeschichtliche Aspekte der Frühneuzeit im Karpatenbogen aufgreifen.     Abstract: Immer mehr Menschen in der Schweiz praktizieren Yoga, glauben an eine Wiedergeburt und lassen sich komplementärmedizinisch behandeln. Barbara Zeugin untersucht, wie sich dieser religiöse Wandel auf die Begleitung am Lebensende auswirkt Insofern alternative Formen von Religion in der Schweiz zunehmen, ist es nicht erstaunlich, wenn in der Begleitung am Lebensende auch alternativ-religiöse Praktiken und alternative Heilverfahren sowie die entsprechenden Rationalisierungen immer mehr an Bedeutung gewinnen. Die Rekonstruktion einer solchen, als alternativ aufgefassten Sterbebegleitungspraxis führte die Religionswissenschaftlerin erstens in ein Hospiz für schwer Kranke und Sterbende und zweitens in ein anthroposophisch-medizinisches Spital, wo sie beobachtend und fragend den folgenden Fragen nachging: Welche alternativ-religiösen Handlungsformen und Rationalisierungen spielen in der Begleitung am Lebensende eine Rolle? Welche Bedeutung wird alternativen Heilpraktiken zugeschrieben? Wie sieht die konkrete Begleitungspraxis aus? Und worin besteht letztlich die Alternativität dieser Praxis resp. wie verhält sich diese zum Selbstanspruch der Palliative Care, die schwer Kranken und Sterbenden auch spirituell zu begleiten?

Diese Konfessionen beeinflussten sich gegenseitig und bedingten sich auf diese Weise in ihrem historischen Werden mit. Das Werk erschließt erstmals die vielfältigen Wechselwirkungen von äthiopisch-orthodoxem Christentum und europäischem Protestantismus, sodass die vermeintliche Selbstverständlichkeit der auch wissenschaftlichen Abgrenzung dieser beiden Varianten in Frage gestellt wird, indem der Zeitraum vom 16. bis zum frühen 20. Jahrhundert zum Forschungsgegenstand gemacht wird.Dieser Beitrag bietet einen neuen Blick auf die Kirchengeschichte der Neuzeit und zeigt, auf welche Weise konfessionell und kulturell divergente Varianten des Christentums Kontinent übergreifend miteinander verknüpft waren.     Abstract: Exodus 1-2 erzählt von der Unterdrückung der Hebräer in Ägypten und der Geburt der künftigen Retters Mose. Christliche und jüdische Ausleger in der Spätantike interpretierten diesen Text aus ihrer je spezifischen Perspektive, als Teil ihrer religiösen Gemeinschaft. Sie gehen mit teils gemeinsamen, teils unterschiedlichen Voraussetzungen, Hermeneutiken und Methoden an der Text heran. Im Hintergrund stehen immer die religiöse Praxis und Lehre der eigenen religiösen Gemeinschaft. Dabei zeigen sich Prozesse der Rezeption ebenso wie Ablehnung und Abgrenzung. Besonders die christliche Schriftauslegung lässt vielfach Polemik gegen das Judentum erkennen, die sich durch die Jahrhunderte weiter fortgesetzt hat. Dennoch finden sich auch zahlreiche Berührungspunkte und gemeinsame Motive, die immer wiederkehren – neben spezifisch jüdischen und christlichen Traditionen. So entsteht in der patristischen und rabbinischen Auslegung ein vielfältiges Bild des biblischen Textes.

    Abstract: Neue Techniken zur Informationsübermittlung befördern den Informationsaustausch. Das ist eine für das 20. und 21. Jahrhundert ganz selbstverständliche Feststellung. Genauso selbstverständlich gilt sie aber auch für das 16. Jahrhundert und die Frühe Neuzeit insgesamt. Ein allseits bekanntes Beispiel dafür ist die Verbesserung der Techniken des Buchdrucks durch die Verwendung beweglicher Lettern. Dies führte dazu, dass neue Medien entstanden und sich dauerhaft etablierten, wie z.B. die Flugschrift und die "Neue Zeitung". Andere bereits bekannte Genera wie Lieder und Predigten erhielten durch die veränderte Kommunikationssituation eine neue Bedeutung in den Auseinandersetzungen der Zeit. Daraus ergaben sich vielfältige Chancen und Herausforderungen, denn die Nutzung dieser neuen Medien wie die Transformation bestehender Medienformate und deren flächendeckende Verwendung setzte politische, soziale, juristische und religiöse Veränderungsprozesse in Gang bzw. beförderte sie. Die Beiträge des Sammelbandes möchten diese neuen Kommunikationsformen und -methoden ebenso wie die Veränderungsprozesse für das 16. Jahrhundert ausleuchten. Dies geschieht, indem Wandlungs- und Transformationsprozesse durch die Nutzung bekannter sowie die Schaffung neuer Medienformate, der Umgang mit Meinungsvielfalt und der damit einhergehenden Pluralität an Deutungen des Zeitgeschehens sowie die Entstehung einer neuen Streitkultur und neue Ordnungsversuche analysiert werden

    Abstract: This comparative and multi-level study of state responses is confronted with huge complexity. Almost all existing theoretical and methodological approaches -such as secularism (including multiple secularisms or post-secularism)- do not take these complexities seriously into account, focusing on one concept only (wrong Leitdifferenz). They neglect different meanings of terms for agents in the field and they neglect the importance of different levels of governance, times, issues and minorities. This study, however, highlights minimally necessary complexity without drowning in this complexity. It draws clear conceptual, theoretical and methodological lessons, also in a broader sense for the study of governance of religious and cultural diversity and for the governance of migrations. Die im vorliegenden Band edierten 184 Quellen dokumentieren nicht nur diese Bemühungen, sondern auch die Unterstützung vonseiten lokaler jüdischer Hilfskomitees sowie anderer, zumeist jüdischer internationaler Hilfsorganisationen. Zudem werden die Reaktionen von Nazi-Behörden in Deutschland und ihren Shanghaier Vertretungen sowie von japanischer und chinesischer Seite auf die Ereignisse beleuchtet. Die Dokumente auf Deutsch, Englisch, Jiddisch, Hebräisch, Russisch und Chinesisch sind annotiert, teilweise übersetzt und von Einleitungen, Karten und Fotografien begleitet.Around 20,000 Jews, mostly from Germany and Austria, escaped Nazi persecution at the end of the 1930s and fled to Shanghai. In the face of generally difficult conditions and increasing harassment from the Japanese occupation authorities, they sought to both secure their material livelihood and organize their social and cultural life. The 184 sources in German, English, Russian, Hebrew, Yiddish and Chinese of this volume document these efforts, as well as the support work by local relief committees and other, mostly Jewish, international aid organizations. In addition, some describe the reactions of the Nazi authorities to their Shanghai escape, while others reflect Chinese attitudes to the events.; Around 20.000 Jews, mostly from Germany and Austria, managed to escape Nazi persecution in the late 1930s and fled to Shanghai, where they found a safe refuge despite the increasing harassment of the Japanese authorities. In the face of difficult conditions, the Jewish refugees tried to arrange for both their material needs and the continuation of their communal cultural life. Subsequently, different types of orientalism were discovered but the premise was that these took their lead from Western-style orientalism, applying it in different circumstances. This book, on the other hand, argues that the diffusion of interpretations in orientalism was not uni-directional, and that the different orientologies, Western, Soviet and Oriental, did not develop in isolation from each other and were interlocked in such a way that a change in any one of them affected the others; and that those being orientalised were active, not passive, players in shaping how views of themselves developed"--

    Abstract: "In recent years bitter controversies have erupted across Europe and the Middle East about women's veiling, and especially their wearing of the face-veil or niqab. Yet the deeper issues contained within these controversies--secularism versus religious belief, individual freedom versus social or family coercion, identity versus integration--are not new but are strikingly prefigured by earlier conflicts. This book examines the state-sponsored anti-veiling campaigns which swept across wide swathes of the Muslim world in the interwar period, especially in Turkey and the Balkans, Iran, Afghanistan and the Soviet republics of the Caucasus and Central Asia. It shows how veiling was officially discouraged and ridiculed as backward and, although it was rarely banned, veiling was politicized and turned into a rallying-point for a wider opposition. Asking a number of questions about this earlier anti-veiling discourse and the policies flowing from it, and the reactions which it provoked, the book illuminates and contextualizes contemporary debates about gender, Islam and modernism"--

    Abstract: "Aspirations, desires, opportunism and exploitation are fundamental elements of the ways in which donor-driven development intervenes in the lives of people in poor countries. Alongside structural and material interventions, emotional engagements are central to processes of social change and the making of selves for those caught up in development's slipstream. Intimate Economies of Development: Mobility, Sexuality and Health in Asia elaborates this proposition by showing that culture, sexuality and health are inevitably and inseparably linked within specific trajectories of modernization in the Greater Mekong Sub-region. As mobility and migration increase and opportunities proliferate throughout Asia, different cultural groups increasingly interact as a result of both targeted interventions and all-consuming trends of socio-economic change; but they do so with different capabilities and expectations. This book engages with issues of moral frameworks and sexual rights discourses but uniquely grounds its arguments in interlocking details of people's everyday lives and aspirations in developing Asia. Part and parcel of this widening landscape of mobility and contingent intimacy is the ever-present threats of infectious disease, most prominently HIV/AIDS, and people-trafficking. Thus, impact assessment and targeted interventions aiming to address negative consequences frequently accompany infrastructure development. This path-breaking book, drawn on more than 20 years of ethnographic research in the Mekon region, shows clearly how current models of mitigation are inadequate as subjective experiences and aspirations are profoundly enmeshed in strategies of livelihood improvement.     Abstract: "The on-going reconfiguration of geo-political and economic forces across the globe has created a new institutional and moral environment for East Asian family life and gender dynamics. Indeed, modernisation in East Asia has brought about increases in women's education levels and participation in the labour force, a delay in marriage age, lower birth rates, and smaller family size. And yet, despite the process of modernization, traditional systems such as Confucianism and patriarchal rules, continue to shape gender politics and family relationships in East Asia. This book examines gender politics and family culture in East Asia in light of both the overwhelming changes that modernization and globalization have brought to the region, and the structural restrictions that women in East Asian societies continue to face in their daily lives. Across three sections, the contributors to this volume focus on marriage and motherhood, religion and family, and migration. In doing so, they reveal how actions and decisions implemented by the state trigger changes in gender and family at the local level, the impact of increasing internal and transnational migration on East Asian culture, and how religion interweaves with the state in shaping gender dynamics and daily life within the family.With case studies from across the region, including South Korea, Japan, mainland China, Taiwan, and Hong Kong, this book will be of great interest to students and scholars of Asian studies, gender studies, anthropology, sociology and social policy.     Abstract: "Employing a novel combination of theoretical insights into International Relations and Historical Sociology, this book investigates the nature of modern social change in Iran. Recasting Iranian Modernity presents the argument that there is a previously neglected international dimension to social change that, when analytically incorporated, sheds a new light on the specificities of Iran's distinctive experience of modernity. This hitherto under-theorized international dimension is manifest in the formation of hybrid patterns of development that have taken both modern and traditional forms. It is, Kamran Matin argues, the tension-prone and unstable nature of these hybrid forms that mark Iranian modernity and which fuelled the socio-political dynamics of the 1979 revolution and the rise of political Islam. Challenging solely comparative approaches to the Iranian revolution that explain it away either as a deviation from, or a reaction to, modernity on the grounds of its religious form, this book offers an alternative approach to the Iranian revolution, modern Iran and political Islam"--

    Abstract: Dieses Buch ist das Standardwerk zur Geschichte von Religion und Frömmigkeit in Deutschland seit 1945.In vielen Teilen der Welt war und ist das soziale Leben von religiösen Vorstellungen durchtränkt. In Westeuropa wie auch in Deutschland verhält es sich nicht mehr so: Seit Ende des Zweiten Weltkriegs erleben wir einen beispiellosen Traditionsbruch innerhalb der christlichen Konfessionen. Während die unmittelbare Nachkriegszeit noch von der Idee einer umfassenden Rechristianisierung geprägt war, hat sich diese Vorstellung wenige Jahrzehnte später verflüchtigt. Die individuelle Frömmigkeitspraxis schwindet, die Gotteshäuser werden leerer. Hinzu kommt, dass sich auch die christlichen Kirchen selbst in dieser Transformation umfassend gewandelt haben: Der strafende Gott hat sich allmählich zum liebenden Vater entwickelt, die Christenlehre zum Religions- und Ethikunterricht. Diese Entwicklung betrifft nicht nur die Kirchen selbst, sondern verändert auch die politische Kultur insgesamt: Idealbilder und Praxis von Kernbereichen des gesellschaftlichen Lebens wie Familie, Sexualität, Bildung, aber auch politische Entwürfe sind immer weniger christlich geprägt, so dass der gesellschaftliche und politische Einfluss der Kirchen abnimmt. Dennoch aber ist die Vorstellung vom Verschwinden der Religion nicht haltbar. Ein populärreligiöser Markt boomt, spirituelle Ratgeber werden als Lebenshelfer konsultiert, Religionsvertreter als Berater in Fragen der letzten Dinge um ihre Meinung gebeten. Wie lassen sich die verschiedenen Ebenen dieses Wandels erklären? Welche Konsequenzen zeitigt er für die religiösen Gemeinschaften, vor allem aber für unser Gemeinwesen insgesamt? Und: In welche Richtung wird sich das religiöse Feld zukünftig entwickeln? Diese Fragen beantwortet Thomas Großbölting in seiner Geschichte des Christentums in Deutschland von 1945 bis heute.
