    Abstract: Images play an important role in developing consciousness and the relationship of the self to its surroundings. In this distinctive collection, editors Charles A. Hill and Marguerite Helmers examine the connection between visual images and persuasion, or how images act rhetorically upon viewers. Chapters included here highlight the differences and commonalities among a variety of projects identified as "visual rhetoric," leading to a more precise definition of the term and its role in rhetorical studies. Contributions to this volume consider a wide variety of sites of image production--from architecture to paintings, from film to needlepoint--in order to understand how images and texts work upon readers as symbolic forms of representation. Each chapter discusses, analyzes, and explains the visual aspect of a particular subject, and illustrates the ways in which messages and meaning are communicated visually. The contributions include work from rhetoric scholars in the English and communication disciplines, and represent a variety of methodologies--theoretical, textual analysis, psychological research, and cultural studies, among others. The editors seek to demonstrate that every new turn in the study of rhetorical practices reveals more possibilities for discussion, and that the recent "turn to the visual" has revealed an inexhaustible supply of new questions, problems, and objects for investigation. As a whole, the chapters presented here demonstrate the wide range of scholarship that is possible when a field begins to take seriously the analysis of images as important cultural and rhetorical forces.     Abstract: Die »Freiheit der Wahl« stellt sich nicht nur alle vier Jahre. Ob Brot, Kleidung oder Website - wir haben sie täglich. Gemeinhin wird damit eine »Freiheit der Entscheidung« bezeichnet - uneingeschränkte Bevorzugung des einen vor dem anderen. Dies gilt nur vordergründig, da jede Wahl sich notwendig auf eine Unterscheidung stützt: Nur was zuvor Bedeutung gewinnt (als wählbar erscheint), kann nachträglich als Wahlversprechen gelten. Wie nicht zuletzt der Beitrag von Niklas Luhmann verdeutlicht, ist hier ein Paradox am Werk: Die »Freiheit der Wahl« braucht eine Einschränkung - und erhält damit Selektionscharakter. Sie beinhaltet ein (Aus-)Gewähltes und ein Aussortiertes; eine Kehrseite des Prozesses, der für sich eine Freiheit beansprucht. Da diese Differenz nicht auf die Objektseite (das Gewählte) reduzierbar ist, sondern den Zugriff selbst (mit-)bestimmt, ist der synonyme Gebrauch von »Freiheit« und »Wahl« zu problematisieren. Dies versucht der Band in struktureller Standortbestimmung sowie spezifisch für die Felder Kunst, Literatur und Medien zu leisten.

Auf der Basis des Paradigmas kultureller Differenz gelten sie nach wie vor als die Anderen, die Fremden. Doch die Fremdheit der Migranten als eine Prämisse der Debatte über Einwanderung in Deutschland verstellt den Blick für eine sehr vielfältige und gar nicht unbedingt fremde Lebenswirklichkeit. Die Beiträge dieses Bandes nun stellen diese Prämisse in Frage. Sie untersuchen, wie in den Diskursen von Gesellschaft, Politik und Wissenschaft die kulturelle Differenz vor allem der Einwanderer aus der Türkei immer wieder festgeschrieben wird und diskutieren anhand neuer theoretischer Zugänge alternative Perspektiven. Welcher Art sind die Identitätsräume, die im Cyberspace und in dessen virtuellen Umgebungen angeboten werden? Welche Bedeutung kommt Verstörungen normativer Muster durch die medialen Präsentationen von Homosexuellen und Transgenders zu? Mit diesen Fragestellungen gibt der Band spannende Impulse zu den Cultural Studies wie auch zu den theoretisch avancierten Gender und Media Studies.

    Abstract: One of the major driving forces behind the international Women´s University was the interest in changing the traditional university. In its pursuit of this goal, the projekt vifu (the Virtual International University) combined the overall focus on gender with a conceptual stress on virtuality as a potential inroad to transform and innovate the established academic system. This collection presents results and critical evaluations of the vifu as a feminist project designed in flavor of change. In addition to this, the volume presents and discusses projects which theoretically and practically integrate the new ICTs into their departure to new horizons in higher education and research and at the same practice a particular sensitivity towards gender as a social category. The authors of this anthology share the perspective on the category of gender and ICT-related developments summed up by "virtuality" as potential tools for transforming traditional academia. While change is not considered as a quality per se, each contribution makes its case for specific kinds of "making new". In doing so, they also seek answers to the questions of a democratic and socially responsible knowledge production and distribution in the 21 st century

    Abstract: Main description: Nicht nur Intellektuelle und Künstler zog es im 19. Jahrhundert aus den deutschen Ländern nach Paris. Handwerker und ungelernte Arbeiter stellten den überwältigenden Großteil der etwa 60 000 Mitglieder umfassenden "deutschen Kolonie" um 1870. Straßenkehrer, Lumpensammler und Kanalarbeiter aus Hessen, Erd- und Fabrikarbeiter aus der Pfalz, deutsche und elsässische Dienstmägde, Schreiner, Tischler, Schneider und Schuhmacher aus Baden, Bayern und dem Niederrhein: Sie machten Paris - neben Berlin und Hamburg - zur "dritten deutschen Großstadt". Die Aufsätze des vorliegenden Bandes von jungen deutschen, österreichischen und französischen Historikern rücken erstmalig genau diese Berufsgruppen in den Mittelpunkt ihres Interesses, wobei der zeitliche Schwerpunkt auf der von der Forschung bisher ebenso vernachlässigten zweiten Hälfte des 19. Jahrhunderts liegt. Der Sammelband ist damit ein Vorstoß in noch weitgehend unbekanntes Terrain und will neben ersten Ergebnissen vor allem Anregungen für weitere Forschungen liefern. Artisans, travailleurs et domestiques allemands à Paris. Une migration oublié du 19e siècle Les intellectuels et les artistes allemands nétaient pas les seuls à être attirés par Paris au 19e siècle. Artisans et ouvriers non-qualifiés représentaient lécrasante majorité de la "colonie allemande" qui comptait, vers 1870, environ 60.000 personnes. Balayeurs, chiffonniers et égoutiers de Hesse, terrassiers et ouvriers dusine du Palatinat, domestiques allemandes et alsaciennes, menuisiers, ébénistes, tailleurs et cordonniers du pays de Bade, de Bavière et du Rhin inférieur: ils faisaient de Paris la "troisième métropole allemande" après Berlin et Hambourg. Ces catégories dimmigrés, peu étudiées en règle générale, occupent une place centrale dans les contributions quont livrées pour le présent volume quelques jeunes chercheurs allemands, autrichiens et français. La période de la seconde moitié du 19e siècle, jusquici restée dans lombre, fait lobjet dune attention particulière.     Abstract: Southeast Asia, until the Asian economic crisis of 1997-2000, was a high economic growth area. However, despite the neo-liberal and globalizing logic of capitalism, local conditions and cultures determine that capitalism will spread in ways not entirely consonant with its Western origins. Capitalism is not a free-floating entity -- it is a socially embodied phenomenon that needs to function in various cultural contexts. Consequently, the tension between the universal status that some claim capitalism now occupies in the post-Cold War world and the particularities of the local cultures it enters should be of great concern

    Abstract: In the effort towards sustainability, it has become increasingly important to develop conceptual frames to understand the dynamics of social and ecological systems. Drawing on complex systems theory, this book investigates how human societies deal with change in linked social-ecological systems, and build capacity to adapt to change. The concept of resilience is central in this context. Resilient social-ecological systems have the potential to sustain development by responding to and shaping change in a manner that does not lead to loss of future options. Resilient systems also provide capacity for renewal and innovation in the face of rapid transformation and crisis. The term navigating in the title is meant to capture this dynamic process.     Abstract: Under globalization, the project of area studies and its relationship to the fields of cultural, ethnic, and gender studies has grown more complex and more in need of the rigorous reexamination that this volume and its distinguished contributors undertake. In the aftermath of World War II, area studies were created in large part to supply information on potential enemies of the United States. The essays in Learning Places argue, however, that the post–Cold War era has seen these programs largely degenerate into little more than public relations firms for the areas they research.A tremendous amount of money flows—particularly within the sphere of East Asian studies, the contributors claim—from foreign agencies and governments to U.S. universities to underwrite courses on their histories and societies. In the process, this volume argues, such funds have gone beyond support to the wholesale subsidization of students in graduate programs, threatening the very integrity of research agendas. Native authority has been elevated to a position of primacy; Asian-born academics are presumed to be definitive commentators in Asian studies, for example. Area studies, the contributors believe, has outlived the original reason for its construction. The essays in this volume examine particular topics such as the development of cultural studies and hyphenated studies (such as African-American, Asian-American, Mexican-American) in the context of the failure of area studies, the corporatization of the contemporary university, the prehistory of postcolonial discourse, and the problematic impact of unformulated political goals on international activism.Learning Places points to the necessity, the difficulty, and the possibility in higher education of breaking free from an entrenched Cold War narrative and making the study of a specific area part of the agenda of education generally.     Abstract: In the late nineteenth century, Germans spearheaded a worldwide effort to preserve the material traces of humanity, designing major ethnographic museums and building extensive networks of communication and exchange across the globe. In this groundbreaking study, Glenn Penny explores the appeal of ethnology in Imperial Germany and analyzes the motivations of the scientists who created the ethnographic museums. Penny shows that German ethnologists were not driven by imperialist desires or an interest in legitimating putative biological or racial hierarchies. Overwhelmingly antiracist, they aspired to generate theories about the essential nature of human beings through their museums' collections. They gained support in their efforts from boosters who were enticed by participating in this international science and who used it to promote the cosmopolitan character of their cities and themselves. But these cosmopolitan ideals were eventually overshadowed by the scientists' more modern, professional, and materialist concerns, which dramatically altered the science and its goals. By clarifying German ethnologists' aspirations and focusing on the market and conflicting interest groups, Penny makes important contributions to German history, the history of science, and museum studies
