    Abstract: The Jazz Age. The phrase conjures images of Louis Armstrong holding court at the Sunset Cafe in Chicago, Duke Ellington dazzling crowds at the Cotton Club in Harlem, and star singers like Bessie Smith and Ma Rainey. But the Jazz Age was every bit as much of a Paris phenomenon as it was a Chicago and New York scene. In Paris Blues, Andy Fry provides an alternative history of African American music and musicians in France, one that looks beyond familiar personalities and well-rehearsed stories. He pinpoints key issues of race and nation in France's complicated jazz history from the 1920s through the 1950s. While he deals with many of the traditional icons such as Josephine Baker, Django Reinhardt, and Sidney Bechet, among others what he asks is how they came to be so iconic, and what their stories hide as well as what they preserve. Fry focuses throughout on early jazz and swing but includes its re-creation reinvention in the 1950s. Along the way, he pays tribute to forgotten traditions such as black musical theater, white show bands, and French wartime swing. Paris Blues provides a nuanced account of the French reception of African Americans and their music and contributes greatly to a growing literature on jazz, race, and nation in France.--

    Abstract: In einer 1908 erschienenen "Kampfschrift gegen die Geräusche unseres Lebens" ereiferte sich der Kulturphilosoph Theodor Lessing über das "Getobe unermesslich anschwellender Riesenstädte, in denen "einer auf des anderen Nervenklaviatur" spiele. Als große Lärmbelästigung empfand er vor allem die Musik: So mokierte Lessing sich über die "grauenhafte Unsitte" der Biermusiken und Promenadenkonzerte oder die "Tyrannei" des Klavierspiels bei geöffnetem Fenster. Derlei Beschwerden sind indes nur die Gegenseite einer sich seit dem frühen 19. Jahrhundert umfassend ausbreitenden urbanen populären Musikkultur, die dieser Band aus unterschiedlichen Perspektiven in den Blick nimmt.

Die Beiträge gehen dem im Zusammenhang mit den damit verbundenen Begriffen der Balance und des Metrums nach, wobei sie weitergehende theoretische Perspektiven formulieren, die selbst in der Musikwissenschaft ein Desiderat sind.
    Abstract: This volume demonstrates that a richer notion of spatiotemporal organization in the arts and beyond can allow contouring, especially in the interaction of different disciplines. Central to this is the concept of rhythm, which is meaningful for various artistic disciplines as well as history and cultural studies. The contributions follow up on the related concepts of balance and of meter, whereupon they formulate further theoretical perspectives which are a desideratum even in musicology.

Drawing case studies from Palestinian communities in Israel, in exile, and under occupation, McDonald grapples with the theoretical and methodological challenges of tracing "resistance" in the popular imagination, attempting to reveal the nuanced ways in which Palestinians have confronted and opposed the traumas of foreign occupation.     Abstract: Populäre Musik ist direkt und stetig präsent. Es verwundert daher nicht, dass sie seit den 1960er Jahren nicht nur den Habitus des zeitgenössischen Menschen bestimmt, sondern auch den Schreibstil einer Reihe von Gegenwartsautoren beeinflusst hat. In den literarischen Texten von Jack Kerouac, Rolf Dieter Brinkmann, Rainald Goetz und Thomas Meinecke fungiert populäre Musik beispielsweise ganz explizit als Medium der Textkonstitution. Markus Tillmann verfolgt die dabei aufscheinenden intermedialen Zusammenhänge zwischen musikalischer und literarischer Produktionsästhetik von den Beat Poets über die Punk- und Industrial-Szene bis hin zur DJ Culture.

    Abstract: David A. McDonald rethinks the conventional history of the Palestinian crisis through an ethnographic analysis of music and musicians, protest songs, and popular culture. Charting a historical narrative that stretches from the late-Ottoman period through the end of the second Palestinian intifada, McDonald examines the shifting politics of music in its capacity to both reflect and shape fundamental aspects of national identity. Drawing case studies from Palestinian communities in Israel, in exile, and under occupation, McDonald grapples with the theoretical and methodological challenges of tracing "resistance" in the popular imagination, attempting to reveal the nuanced ways in which Palestinians have confronted and opposed the traumas of foreign occupation. The first of its kind, this book offers an in-depth ethnomusicological analysis of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, contributing a performative perspective to the larger scholarly conversation about one of the world's most contested humanitarian issues. Vergessen wird dabei oft, dass Rap in erster Linie Partymusik ist. Seit der Entstehung des Stils in den 1970er Jahren ist die HipHop-Kultur ein stark umkämpftes Terrain. Ayla Güler Saieds Studie legt den empirischen Fokus auf die Biographien von Rapperinnen und Rappern verschiedener Genres und bettet diese in die theoretische Analyse der Entstehungsgeschichten des HipHop in Deutschland und den USA ein.     Abstract: Noisy, confrontational, and controversial, industrial music first emerged in the mid-1970s around bands and performance groups who combined avant-garde electronic music with the provocative attitude and style of punk rock. In its early days, bands such as Throbbing Gristle and Cabaret Voltaire produced a genuinely radical form of music bent on recontextualizing the signs and methods of cultural authority in an attempt to liberate listeners from the trappings of modernity. But, as industrial music took on more and more elements of popular music over the course of the 1980s it slowly abandoned its mission. By the mid-1990s, it was seen as simply another style of pop music, and had ironically fallen into the trappings it sought by its very existence to destroy. In "Assimilate", S. Alexander Reed provides the first ever critical history of this fascinating and enigmatic genre tracing industrial music's trajectory from Throbbing Gristle's founding of the record label Industrial Music in 1976, to its peak in popularity on the back of the band Nine Inch Nails in the mid-1990s, and through its decline to the present day. Through a series of revealing explorations of works spanning the entirety of industrial music's past, and drawing on extensive interviews with musicians, record label owners, DJs, and concert promoters, Reed paints a thorough historical picture that includes not only the bands, but the structures that supported them, and the scenes they created. In so doing, he reveals an engaging story of an ideological disintegration and its aftermath. The definitive text on the genre, "Assimilate" is essential reading for fans of industrial music, and scholars and students of popular music alike.

    Abstract: Wie analysiert man eigentlich populäre Musik? Nach zwei Jahrzehnten eines überwiegend kulturwissenschaftlichen Blicks auf den Gegenstand besinnt sich die Popularmusikforschung wieder auf ihre Kernkompetenz: auf die Beschreibung von Musik als akustisches Phänomen. Die etablierten Techniken der Untersuchung von Kunstmusik erweisen sich hier jedoch als nur bedingt transferierbar. Die Beiträge dieses Bandes diskutieren daher alternative Methoden zur Analyse populärer Musik und erproben sie am Beispiel von Songs aus Pop, Rock und Jazz

    Abstract: Go-go is an upbeat, funky Black popular music from Washington, D.C. with a history as long as that of house or hip-hop. Natalie Hopkinson is the Media and Culture Critic for The Root, with access to clubs, producers, and artists, and is therefore well-placed to tell the story of the music from the 70s to the present. With the regentrification of the District, more of the Black population and the go-go industry have moved to the Maryland suburbs.     Abstract: Der Medienhype um Aggro Berlin, Sidos Beteiligung an der Casting-Show »Popstars« oder der Kinofilm »Zeiten ändern dich« des Bambi-Preisträgers Bushido zeigen: Gangsta-Rap ist auch in Deutschland zu einem zentralen Genre der Popkultur avanciert. Die Bildwelten der Gangsta-Rap-Kultur sind dabei nicht nur das Resultat von medienbasierten Glokalisierungsprozessen, sondern auch Bezugspunkte in einem Krisendiskurs um ethnisierte Jugendkriminalität oder deviante Männlichkeitsentwürfe. An der Schnittstelle von Soziologie und Kulturwissenschaft bieten die Beiträge in diesem Band einen Überblick über Bedeutung und Funktionsweise der Gangsta-Rap-Kultur.

Andererseits erlaubt die zeitliche Distanz den Autoren, eben jene stereotypisierten Bilder äußerst kritisch unter die Lupe zu nehmen.
