    Kurzfassung: Die zahlreichen Schicksale der Verfolgten des Nationalsozialismus sind faktenreich belegt, stehen aber im Spannungsfeld zur regionalen Erinnerungskultur nach 1945. Was bedeuten diese Spannungen heute? Maria Anna Willer untersucht Strukturen und Prozesse der Ausgrenzung in der Face-to-Face-Gesellschaft eines Dorfes am bayrischen Alpenrand zur Zeit der NS-Herrschaft und beleuchtet dessen Erinnerungskultur. In Anlehnung an Foucault beschreibt sie im Modell eines »Dispositivs der NS-Verfolgung« die engmaschigen Strukturen der Kontrolle und Überwachung sowie Widerstand und Hilfeleistungen als Kategorien der NS-Diktatur auf dem Dorf. Es zeigt sich: Nach 1945 ist eine Kontinuität der Ausgrenzung erkennbar, wenn die Erinnerung an Opfer der NS-Verfolgung verdrängt wird.

    Kurzfassung: Started in the wake of George Zimmerman's 2013 acquittal in the death of Trayvon Martin, the #BlackLivesMatter movement has become a powerful and incendiary campaign demanding redress for the brutal and unjustified treatment of black bodies by law enforcement in the United States. The movement is only a few years old, but as Christopher J. Lebron argues in this book, the sentiment behind it is not; the plea and demand that 〈"Black Lives Matter〉" comes out of a much older and richer tradition arguing for the equal dignity-and not just equal rights-of black people. The Making of Black Lives Matter presents a condensed and accessible intellectual history that traces the genesis of the ideas that have built into the #BlackLivesMatter movement. Drawing on the work of revolutionary black public intellectuals, including Frederick Douglass, Ida B. Wells, Langston Hughes, Zora Neal Hurston, Anna Julia Cooper, Audre Lorde, James Baldwin, and Martin Luther King Jr., Lebron clarifies what it means to assert that 〈"Black Lives Matter〉" when faced with contemporary instances of anti-black law enforcement. He also illuminates the crucial difference between the problem signaled by the social media hashtag and how we think that we ought to address the problem. As Lebron states, police body cameras, or even the exhortation for civil rights mean nothing in the absence of equality and dignity. To upset dominant practices of abuse, oppression and disregard, we must reach instead for radical sensibility. Radical sensibility requires that we become cognizant of the history of black thought and activism in order to make sense of the emotions, demands, and argument of present-day activists and public thinkers.     Kurzfassung: Sportliches Handeln ist heute ein fester Bestandteil des kulturindustriellen Spektakels: ein wirkmächtiges Theater, in dem teils widersprüchliche gesellschaftliche Axiome zur Aufführung kommen. Philipp Ellrich nimmt die Geschichte(n) des Sports, in denen die sportliche Praxis selbst Erzählungen stiftet und be-deutend wird, aus literaturwissenschaftlicher sowie soziologischer Perspektive unter die Lupe. Den Doppelsinn des Begriffs der Handlung als Ausführung und als Aufführung mobilisierend, fragt er in exemplarischen Analysen von Sporttexten und Sportpraktiken nach dem literarischen Kern des Sports - und deckt so die Paradoxien eines unserer relevantesten Gesellschaftsphänomene auf.

    Kurzfassung: For hundreds of years English people have claimed that fair play is at the core of their national identity. Jonathan Duke-Evans looks at the history of fair play in Britain from earliest times to the present, asking whether it is in fact a British, or alternatively an English, characteristic at all - and if so, whether fair play still matters today? In An English Tradition?, Jonathan Duke-Evans explores the origins of the idea of fair play, tracing it back to the classical world and the Dark Ages, and finding its genesis deep within England's social structure. Charting its early development through both the tales of chivalry and the stories of popular legend, the book shows how fair play manifested itself in literature, the law, the Christian religion, and the family. It examines the way in which fair play was conceived during the ages of slavery and empire, and it proposes a new account of the birth of modern sport in the encounter between age-old popular games and the Victorian cult of amateurism. Taking in the Scottish, Irish, and Welsh manifestations of fair play, Duke-Evans offers contrasts and comparisons from cultures all around the world, and suggests new perspectives on the relevance of fair play in the twenty-first century.

    Kurzfassung: Black communities have been making major contributions to Europe's social and cultural life and landscapes for centuries. However, their achievements largely remain unrecognized by the dominant societies, as their perspectives are excluded from traditional modes of marking public memory. For the first time in European history, leading Black scholars and activists examine this issue – with first-hand knowledge of the eight European capitals in which they live. Highlighting existing monuments, memorials, and urban markers they discuss collective narratives, outline community action, and introduce people and places relevant to Black European history, which continues to be obscured today.

The legacy of the Jewish presence in those countries, as viewed from today's vantage point, and the ways in which it became enmeshed in the quest by people of the region-Jews and non-Jews alike-to secure their prospects for the future, highlighted fundamental issues about the nature and quality of the politics of memory, national identity, and the continuity and relative stability of regimes in the region. If those questions were important even before the Russian invasion of Ukraine in 2022, understanding their implications now seems even more crucial. In a field fraught with conflicting narratives, the challenges of social and political reconstruction are primary concerns for peoples and governments.     Kurzfassung: Magnus Hirschfelds weit über Deutschland ausstrahlendes Institut für Sexualwissenschaft war bahnbrechend für diese neue Wissenschaftsdisziplin und wirkte als Wegbereiter für Schwulen- und LGBT-Bewegungen. Umso verwunderlicher, dass erst jetzt eine quellengestützte, wissenschaftlich solide Aufarbeitung seiner Geschichte greifbar ist. Der Medizinhistoriker mit Schwerpunkt Psychiatrie und geschlechtliche und sexuelle Minderheiten schildert chronologisch und in strukturierter, gut lesbarer Sachlichkeit, häufig auch im Detail auf Beratungsfälle und Fachkontroversen eingehend, das breite Aufgabenspektrum und die neben Hirschfeld am Institut wirkenden Personen. Neben der auf ein üppiges Archiv gestützten Wissenschaftsarbeit beriet das Institut Hilfesuchende, erstellte Prozessgutachten und trat mit Aufklärungsschriften und -vorträgen sowie sexualpolitischen Initiativen etwa zur Abschaffung von ? 175 in Erscheinung.     Kurzfassung: "I started working on this book in spring 2019 while recovering from minor surgery that at the time felt like the biggest health scare to me. The writing of the first few theoretical chapters helped to distract me from my health issue. I planned to continue my work on the book in the summer of 2020, which at that time I anticipated would be another quiet summer at home after my return from a planned trip to Europe. I did not know yet about the biggest world health scare that would coincide with the continuation of my work on the book: the COVID-19 pandemic. It slowly entered every corner of the world, made people socially distance from one another per national and state orders, forced us to stay home, cancel all travel plans, wear masks, and get used to what "the new normal" might be while hoping for the miraculous return of the "old normal." For the second time in two years I turned to the writing of my book as an escape: this time - for a much-needed respite from the global madness and a rising death toll. It also made me think about all those petty ideological and political differences that separated countries in pre-pandemic times, like Russia and the U.S. having grown so far apart in the last few years that they almost have reached the point of no return. I started wondering if a global health scare, such as the ongoing pandemic, could bring states and nations together in tackling the disease. I also wondered if the overused and therefore clichéd phrase "We are all in this together" could go beyond national borders and erase some of the differences that have prevented this"--

Insbesondere erklärt er, dass wir zu einem besseren Verständnis sowohl unserer Herkunft als auch unserer Zukunft nur dann gelangen, wenn wir in der Lage sind, uns selbst aus zwei Perspektiven gleichzeitig zu betrachten: einer globalen und einer planetarischen, wobei letztere den Menschen absichtlich dezentriert. Erst auf diese Weise wird es möglich, in geologischen Zeiträumen zu denken sowie ein angemessenes Bild von der menschlichen Handlungsfähigkeit zu gewinnen. Angesichts der drohenden Naturkatastrophen ist es dafür höchste Zeit.

    Kurzfassung: Das 1871 gegründete Kaiserreich gilt häufig als Hort der Obrigkeitshörigkeit, des Chauvinismus und des Militarismus. Dabei war es zugleich eine Zeit des Aufbruchs in die moderne Massendemokratie. Es hatte eine kluge Verfassung, ambitionierte Reformen wurden auf den Weg gebracht, einer der größten Umbrüche überhaupt nahm entscheidend an Fahrt auf: die Frauenemanzipation. Bei diesen Tendenzen, so Hedwig Richter, handelte es sich nicht einfach um Ungleichzeitigkeiten. Die vom Ideal der Gleichheit motivierte Inklusion der Massen hatte ihren Preis in einer Reihe von Exklusionen: Antisemitismus, Rassismus oder Misogynie. In ihrem Essay zeigt Richter, dass wir das 20. Jahrhundert mit seinen Extremen besser einordnen können, wenn wir die Reformzeit um 1900 in ihrer Komplexität begreifen

Drawing on case studies ranging from the fourth century AD through the twentieth century, we look at how long-established systems of government and thought are challenged, how new institutions are created and new ideas become powerful. While paying attention to the underlying political, intellectual, economic and environmental sources of social disruption, we will see that no matter what similarities there might be between forces that shake different societies, these underlying factors do not dictate specific outcomes. The human actors are ultimately the most important, their decisions drive the conclusions that we see over time. Through our case studies we can explore successful and unsuccessful decision making, and the emergence of the ideas that conditioned human actions. We'll explore the development of Islam and of Christian doctrine, of constitutional thought, of socialism and social Darwinism. We'll look at how these ideas, all of them emerging on the fringes of society became central. We'll also have our eyes set on whether the sorts of disruptive forces we've seen in the past are present at this time, we'll look at the issues confronting the liberal democracies that have been the dominant political/economic forces on our planet in the last half century and see how they have come under stress in the last few decades and look at the possibility that we're facing a new period of disruption and at what we can learn from the past about how change can be constructive rather than destructive"--

    Kurzfassung: Über »Rasse« im Grundgesetz wird derzeit viel gestritten. Ist es ein rassistisches Wort, das es zu ersetzen gilt, oder eine für die Bekämpfung von Diskriminierung notwendige Kategorie? Doris Liebscher geht der Frage historisch, rassismustheoretisch und rechtsdogmatisch auf den Grund. Sie rekonstruiert, wie der Begriff ins Grundgesetz kam, und untersucht, wie Gerichte und Rechtswissenschaft heute das auf »Rasse« bezogene Diskriminierungsverbot aus Artikel 3 GG auslegen. Auch das Recht der DDR sowie europäische, US-amerikanische und weitere internationale Rechtsdebatten unterzieht sie einer kritischen Analyse, um schließlich für ein postkategoriales Antidiskriminierungsrecht zu plädieren: die Ersetzung des Rechtsbegriffs »Rasse« durch »rassistisch«

    Kurzfassung: Das Erdöl ist der Lebenssaft der industriellen Gesellschaften und zugleich der am meisten politisierte Rohstoff. Europa hat sich in der Vergangenheit in eine gefährliche Abhängigkeit von Ölimporten manövriert. Die vorliegende Studie geht der Frage nach, wie es seit dem frühen 19. Jahrhundert zu Europas Ölsucht gekommen ist und wie sich die Interdependenzbeziehungen zwischen den erdölexportierenden Staaten und den europäischen Einfuhrländern im Zeitverlauf verändert haben. Die Entwicklung der internationalen Ölindustrie und des europäischen Erdölverbrauchs wird dabei in einer historischen Längsschnittanalyse als pfadabhängiger Prozess nachgezeichnet und anhand eines polit-ökonomischen Untersuchungsmodells durchleuchtet. Mit dem Verlust der Kontrollmacht durch die OPEC hat die „Ölwaffe“ als wirkungsvolles außenpolitisches Instrument ausgedient. Europas Versorgungssicherheit mit Erdöl hat in den vergangenen Jahrzehnten deutlich zugenommen. Der Autor Alexander Smith ist promovierter Wirtschaftswissenschaftler und diplomierter Politikwissenschaftler. Vor seiner Tätigkeit in der Finanzwirtschaft hat er am Austrian Marshall Plan Center for European Studies geforscht und am Department of History der University of New Orleans zur Erdölgeschichte gelehrt.

    Kurzfassung: "From their domestication to their taboo, the role of pigs in the ancient Near East is one of the most complicated topics in archaeology. Rejecting monocausal explanations, this book adopts an evolutionary approach and uses zooarchaeology and texts to unravel the cultural significance of swine from the Paleolithic to today. Five major themes emerge: The domestication of the pig from wild boar in the Pre-Pottery Neolithic, the unique roles that pigs developed in agricultural economies before and after the development of complex societies, the raising of swine in cities, the shifting ritual roles of pigs, and the formation and development of the pork taboo in Judaism and, later, Islam. The development of this taboo has inspired much academic debate. I argue that the well-known taboo described in Leviticus reflects the intention of the Biblical writers to develop an image of a glorious pastoral ancestry for a heroic Israelite past, something they achieved by tying together existing food traditions. These included a taboo on pigs, which was developed early in the Iron Age during conflicts between Israelites and Philistines and was revitalized by the Biblical writers. The taboo persisted and mutated, gaining strength over the next two and a half millennia. In particular, the pig taboo became a point of contention in the ethno-political struggles between Jewish and Greco-Roman cultures in the Levant. Ultimately, it was this continued evolution within the context of ethnic and religious politics that gave the pig taboo the strength it has today"--

    Kurzfassung: Licia do Prado Valladares's classic anthropological study of Brazil's vast, densely populated urban living environments reveals how the idea of the favela became an internationally establishedand even attractive and exoticrepresentation of poverty. The study traces how the term 'favela' emerged as an analytic category beginning in the mid-1960s, showing how it became the object of immense popular debate and sustained social science research. But the concept of the favela so favored by social scientists is not, Valladares argues, a straightforward reflection of its social reality, and it often obscures more than it reveals.The established representation of favelas undercuts more complex, accurate, and historicized explanations of Brazilian development. It marks and perpetuates favelas as zones of exception rather than as integral to Brazil's modernization over the past century.

    Kurzfassung: ""In the mid-20th century, African musicians took up Cuban music as their own. They claimed it as a marker of black Atlantic connections and of cosmopolitanism untethered from European colonial relations. Today, Cuban/African bands popular in Africa in the 1960s and '70s have moved into the world music scene in Europe and North America, and world music producers and musicians have created new West African-Latin American collaborations expressly for this market niche. This book follows two of these bands, Orchestra Baobab and AfroCubism, and the industry and audiences that surround them-from musicians' homes in West Africa, to performances in Europe and North America, to record label offices in London. This book examines the intensely transnational experiences of musicians, industry personnel, and audiences as they collaboratively produce, circulate, and consume music in a specific post-colonial era of globalization. Musicians, industry personnel, and audiences work with and push against one another as they engage in personal collaborations imbued with histories of global travel and trade. They move between and combine Cuban and Malian melodies, Norwegian and Senegalese markets, and histories of slavery and independence as they work together to create international commodities. Understanding the unstable and dynamic ways these peoples, musics, markets, and histories intersect elucidates how world music actors assert their places within, and produce knowledge about, global markets, colonial histories, and the black Atlantic. This book offers a nuanced view of a global industry that is informed and deeply marked by diverse transnational perspectives and histories of transatlantic exchange. ""--
