Abstract: This powerful account of the oppression of women in the Muslim world remains as shocking today as when it was first published, more than a quarter of a century ago. Nawal El Saadawi writes out of a powerful sense of the violence and injustice which permeated her society. Her experiences working as a doctor in villages around Egypt, witnessing prostitution, honour killings and sexual abuse, including female circumcision, drove her to give voice to this suffering. She goes on explore the causes of the situation through a discussion of the historical role of Arab women in religion and literature. Saadawi argues that the veil, polygamy and legal inequality are incompatible with the essence of Islam or any human faith. This edition lays claim to The Hidden Face of Eve's status as a classic of modern Arab writing.

Abstract: "Over the past few years, secularism has become an intrinsic component of discussions on religious freedom and religious governance. The question of whether states should restrict the wearing of headscarves and other religious symbols has been particularly critical in guiding this thought process. Refashioning Secularisms in France and Turkey documents how, in both countries, devout women have contested bans on headscarves, pointing to how these are inconsistent with the 'real' spirit of secularism. These activists argue that it is possible to be simultaneously secular and religious; to believe in the values conveyed by secularism, while still remaining devoted to their faith. Through this examination, the book highlights how activists locate their claims within the frame of secularism, while at the same time revisiting it to craft a space for their religiosity. Addressing the lacuna in literature on the discourse of devout Muslims affected by these restrictions, this book offers a topical analysis on an understudied dimension of secularism and is a valuable resource for students and researchers with an interest in Religion, Gender Studies, Human Rights and Political Science. Abstract: This book is a translation of what can arguably be called the very first Arabic feminist manual of the role of women in Muslim socierty by the early twentieth-century Tunisian author and reformist al-Ṭāhir/al-Ḥaddād (Taher Haddad). The extensive introduction places the book in its historical context and includes an overview of the various movements and reformists who dealt with the emancipation of Muslim woman prior to al-Ṭāhir/al-Ḥaddād's book. This is followed by a biography of al-Ḥaddād and a discussion of the background and genesis of Our Woman in the Sharīa and Society. Causing quite a furore when it was released, the book remains just as topical today as it was then. This book is undoubtedly the single-most original work written on the subject of Muslim woman in the early modern period. It constitutes a major source for a wide readership, which extends far beyond students with an interest in Arabic literature, as it will also be of considerable benefit to anthropogists, cultural and social historians, gender studies specialists, as well as anyone involved in Middle Eastern studies. Abstract: Women and Religion in the First Christian Centuries focuses on religion during the period of Roman imperial rule and its significance in women's lives. It discusses the rich variety of religious expression, from pagan cults and classical mythology to ancient Judaism and early Christianity, and the wide array of religious functions fulfilled by women. The author analyses key examples from each context, creating a vivid image of this crucial period which laid the foundations of western civilization. The study challenges the concepts of religion and of women in the light of post-modern critique. As such, it is an important contribution to contemporary gender theory. In its broad and interdisciplinary approach, this book will be of interest to students of early religion as well as those involved in cultural theory.
