    Abstract: NEUE PERSPEKTIVEN AUF DIE DEUTSCHE KOLONIALGESCHICHTE Die eigene Zeit als Kolonialmacht sei im Vergleich mit Ländern wie Frankreich oder Großbritannien kurz und relativ unproblematisch gewesen: So sah man es hierzulande lange. Doch das war ein Irrtum. Heute steht die deutsche koloniale Vergangenheit zu Recht im Zentrum kontrovers geführter Debatten über das koloniale Erbe in einer globalen Welt. Dieses Buch beleuchtet mit dem Auswärtigen Amt einen zentralen Akteur des deutschen Kolonialismus und spannt den Bogen vom Deutschen Kaiserreich bis weit ins 20. Jahrhundert hinein. Dabei richtet sich der Blick nicht nur auf Deutschland, sondern auch in die betroffenen Gesellschaften Afrikas, Asiens und Ozeaniens. Mit dem Versailler Vertrag von 1919 endete die formale deutsche Kolonialherrschaft. Doch koloniales Denken lebte in der Mitte der deutschen Ge sellschaft fort - so auch im Auswärtigen Amt, dem eine Mitverantwortung für Gewalt und Verbrechen in den deutschen Kolonien zukommt. Die Folgen seines Handelns sind noch bis in unsere Gegenwart spürbar. In der Zeit der NS-Diktatur verbanden sich nationalkonservative, monarchistische und antirepublikanische Haltungen im Auswärtigen Amt mit den expansionistischen und rassistischen Zielen des Nationalsozialismus. Ab 1949 prägten Indifferenz und Ignoranz, Passivität und Relativierung die bundesdeutsche Politik gegenüber den ehemaligen Kolonien im globalen Süden. Heute ist das Amt maßgeblich an Verhandlungen über Restitution und Wiedergutmachung beteiligt. Zudem wird es von einer diverser gewordenen deutschen Gesellschaft mit Fragen zur kolonialen Vergangenheit konfrontiert. Aus Gründen der historischen Gerechtigkeit, aber auch angesichts einer veränderten Weltlage muss sich das Amt seiner eigenen Kolonialgeschichte stellen. Die Menschen, die in der Stadt leben, werden dabei zum Ziel architektonischer Verdrängungsmaßnahmen. Mickaël Labbé zeigt, wie ganze Bevölkerungsteile durch eine kaum wahrnehmbare Architektur der Verachtung als unerwünscht ausgeschlossen werden. Überwachungskameras, Bänke mit geneigter Sitzfläche oder trennenden Armlehnen, auf denen man nicht schlafen kann, und andere subtile Maßnahmen erschweren insbesondere sozial marginalisierten Menschen wie Obdachlosen das Leben in der Stadt.Gegen diese Tendenz führt Labbé die Notwendigkeit ins Feld, eine Stadt neu zu erfinden, die sich an uns alle richtet. Anstelle von ausschließenden Mechanismen braucht es Räume, in denen wir unsere Verbindungen wieder enger knüpfen können. Denn eine Stadt, die nicht mehr auf ihre gemeinschaftliche Nutzung ausgerichtet ist, die nur aus homogenen Ghettos besteht, wo wir einander nicht mehr konfrontativ und in aller Unterschiedlichkeit begegnen können, ist ein Verlust für uns alle.Labbé beschreibt funktionierende Beispiele einer "Architektur der Anerkennung" und plädiert für eine Wiederaneignung des öffentlichen Raums

    Abstract: Today, African immigrants constitute a growing and increasingly visible component of the US population. African Immigrants in the United States: The Gendering Significance of Race? takes a closer look at the growth of African immigration to the United States in recent decades, as well as implications of this growth. Mamadi Corra highlights several resulting sociodemographic processes underway, including the changing composition of the foreign-born and US Black populations. Corra also takes a closer look at sociodemographic profiles of these "new African Americans" or "new Americans," highlighting the increasing diversity, yet also the racialized portrait of this group of immigrants. Key patterns discussed include the shifting racial and gender composition of immigrants, with a growing proportion of "Black" and female African immigrants on one hand and a decreasing proportion of "White" and male immigrants on the other hand. The book also compares socioeconomic profiles of African immigrants with other immigrant groups, as well as native-American subgroups. Taken together, Corra discovers that the salience of race that is mediated by gender.

    Abstract: In Semiotics of Rape, Rupal Oza follows the social life of rape in rural northwest India to reveal how rape is not only a violation of the body, but a language through which a range of issues—including caste and gender hierarchies, control over land and labor, and the shape of justice—are contested. Rather than focus on the laws governing rape, Oza closely examines rape charges to show how the victims and survivors of rape reclaim their autonomy by refusing to see themselves as defined entirely by the act of violation. Oza also shows how rape cases become arenas where bureaucrats, village council members, caste communities, and the police debate women`s sexual subjectivities and how those varied understandings impact the status and reputations of individuals and groups. In this way, rape gains meaning beyond the level of the survivor and victim to create a social category. By tracing the shifting meanings of sexual violence and justice, Oza offers insights into the social significance of rape in India and beyond.

Die in diesem Buch beschriebene Revolusi (Revolution) bezeichnet die Periode, während der die Indonesier nach der Besetzung durch Japan einen Guerilla-Krieg gegen die zurückkehrenden niederländischen Kolonialherren führten und schliesslich im Dezember 1949 die internationale Anerkennung der im August 1945 proklamierten nationalen Unabhängigkeit erreichten. Für Reybrouck waren diese Ereignisse, die ausserhalb Indonesiens bis heute kaum beachtet werden, weltgeschichtlich bedeutsam. Er schildert die ungemein komplexen diplomatischen, militärischen und innenpolitischen Entwicklungen lebhaft und auch für den Laien gut nachvollziehbar. Dabei bezieht er sich auf fast 200 ausführliche Interviews mit, überwiegend indonesischen, Zeitzeugen. In der fesselnden Darstellung spannt Reybrouck den Bogen von den Anfängen der indonesischen Geschichte bis in die 1950er-Jahre und vermag es, auch den Blick Betroffener einzubeziehen.     Abstract: Decolonization and White Africans examines how African decolonization affected white Africans in eight countries - Algeria, Kenya, Northern Rhodesia (Zambia), Southern Rhodesia (Zimbabwe), Angola, Mozambique, South West Africa (Namibia), and South Africa - and discusses their varied responses to decolonization, including resistance, acquiescence, negotiations, and migration. It also examines the range of mechanisms used by the global community to compel white Africans into submitting to decolonization through such means as official pressure, diplomatic negotiations, global activism, sanctions, and warfare.Until now, books about African decolonization usually approached the topic either from the perspective of the colonial powers or from an anti-colonial black African perspective. As a result, white African perspectives have been marginalized, downplayed, or presented reductively. Decolonization and White Africans adds white African perspectives to the story, thereby broadening our understanding of the decolonization phenomenon.

    Abstract: This is a study of how Donald J. Trump, his populist credentials notwithstanding, borrows without acknowledgment and stubbornly refuses to come to terms with his indebtedness. Taken together with mobility and conviviality, the principle of incompleteness enables us to distinguish between inclusionary and exclusionary forms of populism, and when it is fuelled by ambitions of superiority and zero-sum games of conquest.Nyamnjoh challenges the reader to reflect on how stifling frameworks of citizenship and belonging predicated upon hierarchies of humanity and mobility, and driven by a burning but elusive quest for completeness, can be constructively transcended by humility and conviviality inspired by taking incompleteness seriously. Nyamnjoh argues that the logic and practice of incompleteness is a healthy antidote to name-calling and scapegoating others as undesirable outsiders, depending on the brand of populism at play.Recognising incompleteness also helps to question sterile and problematic binaries such as those between elites and the impoverished masses among whom populists go to fish for political visibility, prominence and success.

    Abstract: In 2002 widespread communal violence tore apart hundreds of towns and villages in rural parts of Gujarat, India. In the aftermath, many Muslims living in Hindu-majority villages sought safety in the small town of Anand, some relocating with the financial assistance of their relatives overseas. Following such dramatic displacement and disorientation, Anand emerged as a site of opportunity and hope. For its residents and transnational visitors, Anand`s Muslim area is not just a site of marginalization; it has become an important focal point and regional center from which they can participate in the wider community of Gujarat and reimagine society in more inclusive terms.This compelling ethnography shows how in Anand the experience of residential segregation led not to estrangement or closure but to distinctive practices of mobility and exchange that embed Muslim residents in a variety of social networks. In doing so, New Lives in Anand moves beyond established notions of ghettoization to foreground the places, practices, and narratives that are significant to the people of Anand. These same women, both young and old, adorn themselves with an array of body modifications and supplements.     Abstract: What does the collapse of India`s tea industry mean for Dalit workers who have lived, worked and died on the plantations since the colonial era? Plantation Crisis offers a complex understanding of how processes of social and political alienation unfold in moments of economic rupture. Based on long-term ethnographic fieldwork in the Peermade and Munnar tea belts, Jayaseelan Raj - himself a product of the plantation system - offers a unique and richly detailed analysis of the profound, multi-dimensional sense of crisis felt by those who are at the bottom of global plantation capitalism.Tea production in India accounts for 25 per cent of global output. The colonial era planation system - and its two million strong workforce - has, since the mid-1990s, faced a series of ruptures stemming from neoliberal economic globalisation. In the South Indian state of Kerala, otherwise known for its labour-centric development initiatives, the Tamil speaking Dalit workforce, whose ancestors were brought to the plantations in the 19th century, are at the forefront of this crisis and the profound impacts it brings to their social identity and economic wellbeing. Out of the colonial history of racial capitalism and indentured migration, Plantation Crisis opens our eyes to the collapse of the plantation system in India, and the profound impacts this has on the Dalit workers who lived there for generations.

    Abstract: West African Soldiers in Britain's Colonial Army explores the complex and constantly changing experience of West African soldiers under British command in Nigeria, the Gold Coast (now Ghana), Sierra Leone, and the Gambia. Since cost and tropical disease limited the deployment of British metropolitan troops to the region, British colonial rule in West Africa depended heavily on locally recruited soldiers and their families. This force became Britain's largest colonial army in Sub-Saharan Africa. West African Soldiers looks at the development of this colonial military from the conquest era of the late nineteenth century to decolonization in the 1950s. Rather than describing the many battles fought by this army both regionally and overseas, and informed by the concept of military culture, the book looks at the broad and overlapping themes of identity, culture, daily life, and violence. Chapter topics include the enslaved origins of the force, military identities including the myth of martial races, religious life, visual symbols like uniforms and insignia, health care related to tropical and sexually transmitted diseases, the experience of army wives, disciplinary flogging, mutiny, day-to-day violence committed by troops, and the employment of former soldiers by the colonial state. Based on archival research in five countries, the book derives inspiration from previous work on ordinary African soldiers in the British and German colonies of East Africa and in French West Africa.

    Abstract: Based on new evidence that challenges existing theories of urban inequality, Crankshaw argues that the changing pattern of earnings and occupational inequality in Johannesburg is better described by the professionalism of employment alongside high-levels of chronic unemployment.Central to this examination is that the social polarisation hypothesis, which is accepted by many, is simply wrong in the case of Johannesburg. Ultimately, Crankshaw posits that the post-Fordist, post-apartheid period is characterised by a completely new division of labour that has caused new forms of racial inequality. That racial inequality in the post-apartheid period is not the result of the persistence of apartheid-era causes, but is the result of new causes that have interacted with the historical effects of apartheid to produce new patterns of racial inequality.     Abstract: Seit 1955 erheben die Macherinnen und Macher der documenta den Anspruch, Einblick in die aktuellen künstlerischen Tendenzen zu liefern und den aktuellen Zeitgeist zu dokumentieren. Die Publikation stellt die Geschichte der documenta in den Kontext der politischen, kultur- und gesellschaftsgeschichtlichen Entwicklung der Bundesrepublik Deutschland in der zweiten Hälfte des 20. Jahrhunderts und setzt so Kunst und Geschichte in ein sich wechselseitig bedingendes Verhältnis. Immer wieder war die internationale Großausstellung ein Ort, an dem das westdeutsche Selbstverständnis verhandelt wurde. Progressive und regressive politische Tendenzen standen dabei von Anfang an nebeneinander. „Die einzelnen Essays wechseln sich mit Bildstrecken der Exponate und knappen Kommentaren ab. So ist trotz aller hier geäußerter inhaltlicher Kritik eine handliche und ansprechende Dokumentation zur Geschichte der documenta zwischen 1955 und 1997 entstanden, die den aktuellen Wissenstand präsentiert.     Abstract: Was in diesem Land anders werden muss. Aminata Touré verbrachte die ersten Jahre ihres Lebens in einer Unterkunft für Geflüchtete, heute ist sie Vizepräsidentin eines Landtags. Dass sich dieser Satz wie eine Heldinnengeschichte liest, zeigt, dass wir noch nicht in einer offenen und gleichberechtigten Gesellschaft leben. Es ist höchste Zeit, das zu ändern. Aminata Tourés Eltern flohen 1992, kurz vor ihrer Geburt, aus Mali. Im selben Jahr, während sie mit ihrer Familie in einer Flüchtlingsunterkunft lebte, brannten in Deutschland eben solche Häuser. Und das nicht zum letzten Mal. Ihr Buch handelt vom Aufwachsen als Schwarze Frau in einer Gesellschaft, die immer noch Mühe hat, ihren eigenen Rassismus zu erkennen, aber auch vom Weg in die Politik, von Erfolgen und vom Scheitern IBM nicht, um zu sagen, dass es schwer oder einfach war, sondern, um zu sagen, was in diesem Land anders werden muss. Politik kann mehr sein als Machterhalt und die Verwaltung der Zustände. Ein Aufruf an junge und diverse Menschen, in die Institutionen zu gehen, um die Politik und unser Zusammenleben zu verändern. Aminata Touré, geboren 1992, wuchs in Neumünster auf und trat 2012 der Grünen Jugend bei. Seit 2017 ist sie Landtagsabgeordnete in Schleswig-Holstein und seit 2019 Vizepräsidentin des Parlaments. In ihrer Fraktion ist sie u.a. Sprecherin für die Themen Migration, Antirassismus und Gleichstellung. (Verlagswerbung)

    Abstract: For more than seventy years, authoritarian rule was the dominant form of government in sub-Saharan Africa. Three-quarters of African states have experienced some form of one-party or military rule since 1945. Accessible and engaging, Authoritarian Africa: Repression, Resistance, and the Power of Ideas is the first book to examine this subject from a historical perspective. Exploring the history and legacy of authoritarianism in Africa--from the colonial era until the onset of democracy in the early 1990s--it introduces students to the variety of authoritarian regimes that have existed on the continent, including one-party states, military rule, and personal dictatorships.This unique text also provides essential new insights, revising the traditional "story" of African authoritarianism by drawing on primary source materials (from songs to statistics) to provide a fresh, original perspective. Looking at what sustained authoritarian rule in Africa over more than a century, the authors consider the phenomenon on its own terms--not simply as a way station on the road to democracy--and in the context of the continent's social, political, intellectual, and economic history.

At the national level, neoliberal housing policy has overtaken debates around land reform. For Indigenous peoples, access to affordable housing remains crucial to alleviating poverty. But as palapas, traditional thatch and wood houses, are replaced by tract houses in the Yucatán Peninsula, Indigenous peoples' relationship to land, urbanism, and finance is similarly transformed, revealing a legacy of debt and dispossession.Indigenous Dispossession examines how Maya families grapple with the ramifications of neoliberal housing policies. M. Bianet Castellanos relates Maya migrants' experiences with housing and mortgage finance in Cancún, one of Mexico's fastest-growing cities. Their struggle to own homes reveals colonial and settler colonial structures that underpin the city's economy, built environment, and racial order. But even as Maya people contend with predatory lending practices and foreclosure, they cultivate strategies of resistance from "waiting out" the state, to demanding Indigenous rights in urban centers. As Castellanos argues, it is through these maneuvers that Maya migrants forge a new vision of Indigenous urbanism.

    Abstract: Der deutsche Ethnologe Leo Frobenius legte die weltweit bedeutendste Sammlung großformatiger Kopien prähistorischer Felskunst an: Die jahrtausendealten Bildensembles, oft an unzugänglichen Orten wie Höhlen und Wüsten zu finden, wurden zwischen 1914 und 1939 unter abenteuerlichen Umständen auf Leinwand abgemalt. Nach Nordafrika, der Sahara und dem südlichen Afrika entsandte Frobenius auch Expeditionen in die europäischen Felsbildgebiete sowie nach Indonesien und Australien. So entstand eine Sammlung von über 5.000 Kopien, farbig und meist in Originalgröße mit Formaten von bis zu 2,5 x 10 Metern. Erst in jüngster Zeit konnte die fast vergessene, spektakuläre internationale Ausstellungsgeschichte dieser Bilder rekonstruiert werden, die in den 1930er-Jahren in Europa und in den USA gezeigt worden waren. Welche Wirkung diese zuvor unbekannten Bilder hatten und wie sie zeitgenössische Künstler inspirierten, ist auch ein Thema dieses Buches.
