    Kurzfassung: Main description: In der jüngeren Forschung haben die beiden klassischen Hypothesen einer Aufstiegsgeschichte Davids und einer Thronfolgeerzählung an Überzeugungskraft verloren. Damit rücken die Texte in II Sam 1-5 verstärkt in den Blick, denen eine Schlüsselstellung für die literarische Genese der Davidüberlieferung zukommt. Die vorliegende Studie ermittelt einen ersten durchlaufenden und noch vorexilischen Darstellungszusammenhang, der im 7. Jh. v. Chr. entstanden ist. Entsprechend erklärt sie das Doppelkönigtum Davids über Israel und Juda als eine protodeuteronomistische Gründungsgeschichte der späten Königszeit. Die Untersuchung schließt mit einer redaktionsgeschichtlichen Skizze der Daviderzählungen im zweiten Samuelbuch und einer Revision der geschichtlichen Zeugnisse.
    Kurzfassung: Main description: Recent research has led to a weakening of the two classical hypotheses on the story of David's rise and a succession narrative. Instead, attention has focussed on the texts in II Samuel 1-5, which are seen as being of crucial importance for the literary genesis of the story of David. The present study reveals a first continuous account from before the time of exile, which was produced in the 7th century BC. Thus it explains David's double kingship of Israel and Juda as a proto-deuteronomistic foundation narrative from the late Age of Kings. The study closes with a sketch of the editorial history of the David narratives in II Samuel and a revision of the historical records.

    Kurzfassung: Main description: In dieser Arbeit werden die Universaltheorien Niklas Luhmanns (1927-1998) und Charles Peirces (1839-1914) zum ersten Mal grundlegend aufeinander bezogen. Auf der Basis einer kritischen funktionalen Analyse von System- und Zeichentheorie wird ein Zeichensystem neu konstruiert, dessen Auflöse- und Rekombinationsvermögen höher ist als das der genannten Einzeldisziplinen. Die theoretisch erzielten Ergebnisse lassen sich als Grundlage für konkrete sprach- und literaturwissenschaftliche oder auch soziologische Problemstellungen verwenden. Zudem kann das Buch als Einführung in das Denken Luhmanns und Peirces gelesen werden.
    Kurzfassung: Main description: This study is the first to make a systematic attempt to relate the universal theories of Niklas Luhmann (1927-1998) and Charles S. Peirce (1839-1914) to one another. On the basis of a critical functional analysis of systems theory and semiotic theory, a newly designed semiotic system is proposed that displays a higher resolution and recombination potential than the individual disciplines involved. The theoretical results can be used as a foundation for dealing with concrete linguistic, literary, or sociological problems. In addition, the book can be read as an introduction to the thinking of Luhmann and Peirce.

Die Untersuchung schließt mit einer redaktionsgeschichtlichen Skizze der Daviderzählungen im zweiten Samuelbuch und einer Revision der geschichtlichen Zeugnisse , Main description: Recent research has led to a weakening of the two classical hypotheses on the story of David's rise and a succession narrative. Instead, attention has focussed on the texts in II Samuel 1-5, which are seen as being of crucial importance for the literary genesis of the story of David. The present study reveals a first continuous account from before the time of exile, which was produced in the 7th century BC. Thus it explains David's double kingship of Israel and Juda as a proto-deuteronomistic foundation narrative from the late Age of Kings. In this introduction, Bernard Spolsky explores many debates at the forefront of language policy: ideas of correctness and bad language; bilingualism and multilingualism; language death and efforts to preserve endangered languages; language choice as a human and civil right; and language education policy. Through looking at the language practices, beliefs and management of social groups from families to supra-national organizations, he develops a theory of modern national language policy and the major forces controlling it, such as the demands for efficient communication, the pressure for national identity, the attractions of (and resistance to) English as a global language, and the growing concern for human and civil rights as they impinge on language. Two central questions asked in this wide-ranging survey are of how to recognize language policies, and whether or not language can be managed at all

    Kurzfassung: Main description: For some years the view has become established that the Book of the Twelve is a systematically structured literary unity. An exegesis which takes the final canonical text seriously undertakes to understand the structure and theological intention of this unity. The papers collected here attempt to reveal significant structures which overarch the individual components. Particular emphasis is placed on the reconstruction of thematic threads which are created when individual prophets take up topics from their predecessors (e.g. Jehovah's Day, conversion, role of the peoples) and intensify them. The papers were written between 1999 and 2002 under the aegis of the Society of Biblical Literature's Working Group on The Formation of the Book of the Twelve.

    Kurzfassung: Gender and Politeness challenges the notion that women are necessarily always more polite than men as much of the language and gender literature claims. Sara Mills discusses the complex relations between gender and politeness and argues that although there are circumstances when women speakers, drawing on stereotypes of femininity to guide their behaviour, will appear to be acting in a more polite way than men, there are many circumstances where women will act just as impolitely as men. The book aims to show that politeness and impoliteness are in essence judgements about another's interventions in an interaction and about that person as whole, and are not simple classifications of particular types of speech. Drawing on the notion of community of practice Mills examines the way that speakers negotiate with what they perceive to be gendered stereotypes circulating within their particular group

    Kurzfassung: In the aftermath of colonial mission, Christianity has come to have widespread acceptance in Southern Tanzania. In this book, Maia Green explores contemporary Catholic practice in a rural community of Southern Tanzania. Setting the adoption of Christianity and the suppression of witchcraft in a historical context, she suggests that power relations established during the colonial period continue to hold between both popular Christianity and orthodoxy, and local populations and indigenous clergy. Paradoxically, while local practices around the constitution of kinship and personhood remain defiantly free of Christian elements, they inform a popular Christianity experienced as a system of substances and practices. This book offers a challenge to idealist and interpretative accounts of African participation in twentieth-century religious forms, and argues for a politically grounded analysis of historical processes. It will appeal widely to scholars and students of anthropology, sociology and African Studies; particularly those interested in religion and kinship

    Kurzfassung: In Indonesia, the world's largest Muslim-majority country, Muslims struggle to reconcile radically different sets of social norms and laws, including those derived from Islam, local social norms, and contemporary ideas about gender equality and rule of law. In this 2003 study, John Bowen explores this struggle, through archival and ethnographic research in villages and courtrooms of the Aceh Province, Sumatra, and through interviews with national religious and legal figures. He analyses the social frameworks for disputes about land, inheritance, marriage, divorce, Islamic History and, more broadly, about the relationships between the state and Islam, and between Muslims and non-Muslims. The book speaks to debates carried out in all societies about how people can live together with their deep differences in values and ways of life. It will be welcomed by scholars and students across the social sciences, particularly those interested in anthropology, cultural sociology and political theory

    Kurzfassung: Literacy and Literacies is an engaging account of literacy and its relation to power. The book develops a synthesis of literacy studies, moving beyond received categories, and exploring the domain of power through questions of colonialism, modern state formation, educational systems and official versus popular literacies. Collins and Blot offer in-depth critical discussion of particular cases and discuss the role of literacies in the formation of class, gender, and ethnic identity. Through their analysis of two domains - those of literacies and power, and of literacies and subjectivity - they challenge received assumptions about literacy, intellectual development and social progress and argue that neither 'universalist' nor 'particularist' accounts offer satisfactory approaches to the phenomenon. In this introduction, Bernard Spolsky explores many debates at the forefront of language policy: ideas of correctness and bad language; bilingualism and multilingualism; language death and efforts to preserve endangered languages; language choice as a human and civil right; and language education policy.     Kurzfassung: Biographical note: Cordula Neis ist Wissenschaftliche Mitarbeiterin an der Universität Potsdam im DFG-Projekt "Onomasiologisches Lexikon sprachtheoretischer Grundbegriffe des 17. und 18. Jahrhunderts".
    Kurzfassung: Untersuchungsgegenstand des vorliegenden Bandes ist die für das Jahr 1771 von der Berliner Akademie der Wissenschaften gestellte Preisfrage, ob Menschen, wenn sie nur ihren natürlichen Fähigkeiten überlassen sind, Sprache erfinden können. Die berühmte Preisfrage ist Philologen und Historikern wohlbekannt, doch reduziert sich ihre Bekanntheit zumeist auf die schließlich ausgezeichnete Abhandlung Johann Gottfried Herders. Die nie veröffentlichten französischen, deutschen und lateinischen Abhandlungen der 30 Mitbewerber hingegen, von denen 24 im Archiv der Berlin-Brandenburgischen Akademie der Wissenschaften aufbewahrt werden, sind weithin unbekannt. Sie werden hier zum ersten Mal erschlossen und im Zusammenhang sprachtheoretischer und anthropologischer Diskurse der europäischen Aufklärung (u. a. Rousseau, Condillac, Locke, Buffon) analysiert. Ein wichtiges Anliegen der Arbeit besteht u. a. darin, die ausschließliche Perspektive der Forschung auf Herders Abhandlung zu relativieren und seine Leistung im Kontext der konkurrierenden Einsendungen neu zu bewerten. Die Autorin hat dazu ca. 1000 unedierte Handschriftenseiten ausgewertet, von denen einige hier exemplarisch abgedruckt sind.

The data are mostly conversations in the course of private social gatherings. Gumperz' approach to intercultural communication and Brown/Levinson's theory of politeness supply the theoretical framework for the study. The two-sided concept of 'face' - distancing (negative face) and rapprochement (positive face) - points up cultural differences. Germans attach great importance to privacy and individuality, while Arabs prefer in-group relations.
    Kurzfassung: Main description: Die Arbeit erforscht die aufgrund von Höflichkeit entstandenen Mißverständnisse zwischen Deutschen und Arabern. Den Kern der Daten bilden Gespräche im Rahmen von privaten Abendeinladungen. Gumperz' Ansatz zur interkulturellen Kommunikation und Brown/Levinsons Höflichkeitstheorie liefern den theoretischen Rahmen dieser Studie. Der aus zwei Aspekten bestehende face-Begriff, Distanzierung (negative face) und Annäherung (positive face), beleuchtet Kulturunterschiede: Während die Deutschen viel Wert auf Privatleben und Individualität legen, bevorzugen die Araber in-group-Beziehungen.

    Kurzfassung: Main description: Die mediale Kommunikation wird im "Optischen Zeitalter" bzw. im Zeichen der "Bilderflut" beherrscht von den Text-Bild-Medien (Zeitung, Zeitschrift, Buch, Plakat, Comics und anderen Heftchen) sowie den Bild-Text-Medien (Film, Fernsehen, Videoclip, Internet). In ihnen wird versucht, neben dem Text auch eine Bildsprache einzusetzen, die als visual esperanto oder als Anhäufung von "Visiotypen" Allgemeinverständlichkeit zu garantieren scheint. Gefragt ist deshalb ein Zugang zu den Bildern, Texten und Text-Bild-Kombinationen, zu den gängigen Theorien dazu, zu den üblichen Umsetzungen der Theorien in die Praxis der genannten Medien. Schließlich wird das Verhältnis von Sprache und Kunst im 20. Jahrhundert beleuchtet.
    Kurzfassung: Main description: Today, in a 'Visual Age' 'inundated' by images, media communication is dominated by the text-picture media (newspapers, magazines, books, posters, comics, etc.) and the picture-text media (films, TV, video clips, Internet). In these media, the attempt is made to establish a typical visual idiom alongside the text, a visual Esperanto or accumulation of 'visiotypes' designed as a guarantee of universal comprehensibility. Hence there is a need for an approach providing access to the images, texts and text-picture combinations, the theories about them in currency, and the central realizations of these theories in the praxis of the said media. The book sets out to provide such access, casting light in its later chapters on the relationship between language and art in the 20th century.

    Kurzfassung: Main description: Die Arbeit zeigt, daß interkulturelle Kommunikation nicht - wie gemeinhin angenommen - notwendigerweise problematisch ist. Mittels Mikroanalysen authentischer Dissenssequenzen wird nachgewiesen, daß Gesprächsteilnehmer in deutsch-dänischen Verhandlungen über nationale, kulturelle und sprachliche Unterschiede hinweg im Stande sind, selbst potenziell problematische Sequenzen zu meistern. Dies verdeutlicht, daß es einer stärkeren Differenzierung des Feldes interkulturelle Kommunikation bedarf, um der Komplexität des Untersuchungsgegenstandes gerecht zu werden.
    Kurzfassung: Main description: The study shows that, contrary to received thinking on the point, intercultural communication is not necessarily problematic. Micro-analyses of authentic dissent sequences show that, despite their national, cultural, and linguistic differences, participants in German-Danish negotiations are capable of mastering even potentially problematic sequences. This points the necessity for a more differentiated approach to the field of intercultural communication if justice is to be done to the complexity of the subject.

    Kurzfassung: This explores the question of when and why violence by and against new religious cults erupts and whether and how such dramatic conflicts can be foreseen, managed and averted. The authors, leading international experts on religious movements and violent behavior, focus on the four major episodes of cult violence during the last decade: the tragic conflagration that engulfed the Branch Davidians in Waco, Texas; the deadly sarin gas attack by the Aum Shinrikyo in Tokyo; the murder-suicides by the Solar Temple in Switzerland and Canada; and the collective suicide by the members of Heaven's Gate. They explore the dynamics leading to these dramatic episodes in North America, Europe, and Asia, and offer insights into the general relationship between violence and religious cults in contemporary society.     Kurzfassung: African-American Children at Church explores African-American socialization beliefs and practices, based on findings of a unique, four-year long study in a Baptist church in Salt Lake City, Utah. By combining the ethnographic approaches of anthropology with the detailed naturalistic observations of developmental psychology, Dr Haight provides a rich description of actual socialization practices along with an interpretation of what those patterns mean to the participants themselves. Based on extensive interviews with successful African-American adults involved with children, this book begins with the exploration of adults' beliefs about socialization issues focusing on the role of religion in the development of resilience. Drawing from naturalistic observations of adult-child interaction, the book then describes actual socialization contexts and practices that help to nurture competencies in African-American children. The text focuses on Sunday School and includes narrative practices and patterns of adult-child conflict and play

Instead of focusing on one religious community to the exclusion of the other or concentrating only on the conflict between the two, Peter Gottschalk examines the complex interactions that tie individuals not just to one group but to many. Residents identify with groups whose membership cuts across religious boundaries, including associations based on family, neighborhood, village, and nation, as well as gender, class, caste, and language.     Kurzfassung: Main description: Der Siegeszug der Osmanen bis vor die Tore Wiens schlug sich in einem weitverzweigten, bis heute kaum überschaubaren Schrifttum nieder, das alle materiellen Mittel der Kommunikation umfaßt und als transnationales Paradigma frühneuzeitlicher Öffentlichkeit angesehen werden muß. Die in diesem Band vereinigten Studien, Ergebnisse eines Kolloquiums, das der Wolfenbütteler Arbeitskreis für Renaissanceforschung zusammen mit der Ungarischen Akademie der Wissenschaften veranstaltete, wenden sich im interdisziplinären Ausgriff und in internationaler Perspektive sowohl den Akteuren der osmanisch-europäischen Konfrontation wie auch den Autoren, Schreibweisen, Problemlagen, Traditionslinien und Rezeptionsmodalitäten der einschlägigen Literatur zu.
    Kurzfassung: Main description: The triumphant arrival of the Ottoman Turks before the gates of Vienna generated a spate of widely variegated writings almost too manifold to be surveyed from a present-day viewpoint and encompassing all the material resources of communication available at the time. As such this body of writing may be legitimately regarded as a transnational paradigm of early modern public communication. The studies in this volume present the results of a colloquium organized by the Wolfenbüttel Research Group on the Renaissance and the Hungarian Academy of Sciences. They are interdisciplinary in nature and international in their perspective and examine both the actors involved in the confrontation between Turks and Europeans and the authors, styles, problems, lines of tradition and reception modalities identifiable in the literature it generated.
