    Abstract: Der Sammelband zieht eine erste und zugleich umfassende politikwissenschaftliche Bilanz der vierten Regierung Merkel aus CDU/CSU und SPD. In den Beiträgen ausgewiesener Expert*innen werden in einem ersten Teil die Rahmenbedingungen des Regierens durch die Große Koalition zwischen 2017/18 und 2021 analysiert. Hierzu zählen die strategische Positionierung von Regierungs- und Oppositionsparteien, das Koalitionsmanagement, die Koordination der Bundesländer sowie das Abstimmungsverhalten im Bundestag. In einem zweiten Teil wird das Regierungshandeln in allen relevanten Politikfeldern beschrieben, erklärt und bewertet. Hierzu zählt nicht nur die in der zweiten Hälfte der Legislaturperiode alles dominierende Corona-Krisenpolitik. Vielmehr werden auch die wichtigsten Entscheidungen und Nicht-Entscheidungen in Bereichen wie der Finanz- und Sozialpolitik, der Umweltpolitik, der Integrationspolitik oder der Außen- und Europapolitik untersucht und eingeordnet.     Abstract: "An important debate is under way in the European Union (EU) over what should be shared at community level and what should be left to individual nations. Social Europe is a key topic in the construction of the EU and its institutions. This volume examines the current state of, and perspectives for, Social Europe, as well as key issues in European social policy, including the posting of workers, the impact of the free market and regulations on social convergence, work automation, digitalisation, taxation and democracy in the workplace. The aim of this volume is to identify a course to be followed in integrating the EU's social policies and point to areas in which co-operation between member states is likely to produce best results. The concept of 'social turn' is used as a theoretical tool to describe and explain European policy in the field of social issues, with 'social turn' defined as a change in the way of thinking about Social Europe. While a Social Europe was previously seen to be a natural consequence of political and economic integration, it is now viewed as a separate area that requires active policies to preserve the European project. The EU's big question today concerns the level at which this policy should be pursued: the volume's contributors outline difficulties with harmonising social policies across the Union, but they nevertheless argue that, owing to the common challenges faced by Europe, the idea of a Social Europe must not be abandoned and requires specific action. The volume consists of 11 chapters that propose ways in which the idea of a Social Europe can be put into practice. Chapter 1 outlines prospects for developing European social policy: is this idea becoming obsolete, as some argue? The following six chapters discuss areas that require action at both the national and European levels (such as democracy in the workplace, work automation, digitalisation and taxes). Is it possible to work towards common goals across the EU while accounting for the different levels and contexts of its functioning? The next three chapters are authored by representatives of the authorities of the Weimar Triangle states of France, Germany and Poland, and shed light on the views and arguments raised in the debate on the future of Social Europe.     Abstract: Sprache spielt im Hinblick auf politisches Handeln eine sehr bedeutsame Rolle. Die Auseinandersetzung mit dem Verhältnis von Politik und Sprache erscheint umso notwendiger, als dieses Verhältnis in der gegenwärtigen politischen Bildung ein Schattendasein fristet. Time and Temporality in Transitional and Post-Conflict Societies examines how time is experienced, constructed and used in transitional and post-conflict societies. This collection critically questions linear, transitional justice time and highlights the different temporalities that exist at local and institutional levels through original empirical research. Presenting empirical and often ethnographic research from Argentina, Brazil, Colombia, Cambodia, Mozambique, Palestine/Israel, Rwanda and South Africa, contributors use a temporal lens to investigate key issues including: transitional justice institutions, peace processes, victimhood, perpetrators, accountability, reparations, forgiveness, reconciliation and memoralisation.

    Abstract: David Martin is a pioneer of a political sociology of religion that integrates a combined analysis of nationalism and political religions with the history of religion. He was one of the first critics of the so-called secularization thesis, and his historical orientation makes him one of the few outstanding scholars who have continued the work begun by Max Weber and Emile Durkheim. This collection provides the first scholarly overview of his hugely influential work and includes a chapter written by David Martin himself.Starting with an introduction that contextualises David Martin's theories on the sociology of religion, both currently and historically, this volume aims to cover David Martin's lifework in its entirety. An international panel of contributors sheds new light on his studies of particular geographical areas (Britain, Latin America, Scandinavia) and on certain systematic fields (secularization, violence, music, Pentecostalism, the relation between sociology and theology). David Martin's concluding chapter addresses the critical points raised in response to his theories.This book addresses one of the key figures in the development of the sociology of religion, and as such it will be of great interest to all scholars of the sociology of religion.

    Abstract: "After decades of mismanagement and direct military rule, Myanmar's contested transition to a more democratic government has rapidly shifted the outlook in this significant Southeast Asian nation. Since 2011, the removal of Western sanctions and new foreign investments have resulted in high rates of economic growth and an expanding middle class, albeit from a very low base. In a result unthinkable a few years earlier, former political prisoner and Nobel laureate, Aung San Suu Kyi, and her party, the National League for Democracy (NLD), formed a national government in early 2016. However, despite significant political and economic reforms since the liberalisation process commenced, the transition to civilian rule remains constrained by the military's 2008 Constitution, which guarantees that it operates unfettered by civilian oversight. As a result, although some ethnic conflicts have abated, others continue to fester while new conflicts have erupted. With a daunting task ahead the NLD government has made some progress in removing the vestiges of repressive military-era laws but many remain untouched and some of the practices of the new government provide unwelcome reminders of its authoritarian history. This timely Handbook describes the political, economic, cultural and strategic dimensions of this crucial period of transition in Myanmar life. It presents explanations for contradictory trends, including those that defy some of the early narratives about the comprehensive transformation of Myanmar life.     Abstract: Dynamics of Political Violence examines how violence emerges and develops from episodes of contentious politics. By considering a wide range of empirical cases, such as anarchist movements, ethno-nationalist and left-wing militancy in Europe, contemporary Islamist violence, and insurgencies in South Africa and Latin America, this pathbreaking volume of research identifies the forces that shape radicalization and violent escalation. It also contributes to the process-and-mechanism-based models of contentious politics that have been developing over the past decade in both sociology and political science. Chapters of original research emphasize how the processes of radicalization and violence are open-ended, interactive, and context dependent. They offer detailed empirical accounts as well as comprehensive and systematic analyses of the dynamics leading to violent episodes. Specifically, the chapters converge around four dynamic processes that are shown to be especially germane to radicalization and violence: dynamics of movement-state interaction; dynamics of intra-movement competition; dynamics of meaning formation and transformation; and dynamics of diffusion.

First, they suggest that transnational cross-border communication in Europe has been encouraged through the gradual Europeanization of national as well as issue-specific public spheres. It is the status of being exiled within-by prejudices, procedures, activities and interactions so fundamental as to not even be noticed-that marks the unarchived histories investigated in this volume. Bringing together contributions covering South Asia, North and South America, and North Africa, this innovative analysis presents novel interpretations of unfamiliar sources and insightful reconsiderations of well-known materials that lie at the centre of many current debates on history and the archive"--

The common sense of polarised race, caste, class or gender relations is articulated in rarely archived, historically unpretty and unacknowledged actions. Out of what archive is the history of these practices, which are not events, not datable or even nameable, to be written? Every instance of archiving is accompanied by a process of 'un-archiving': rendering many aspects of social, cultural, political relations in the past and the present as incidental, chaotic, trivial, inconsequential, and therefore 'unhistorical'. This book investigates the extensive domain of such histories, unarchived in the process of archiving those aspects of the human past and present that have been deemed significant at various times, for various reasons, by states, ruling classes and disciplinary historians.     Abstract: Corruption is usually understood as hampering political development, economic growth and democratic participation of citizens, but comparing the effects of corruption for different political regimes presents astonishingly complex findings. The ongoing persistence of corruption underlines that it is not only dysfunctional, but can be highly functional as well. This special issue brings together contributions from comparative politics, political science and economics which precisely focus on these (dys)functionalities of corruption in political regimes across various world regions. The question of methodological pluralism is especially important for studying corruption comparatively. While on an international level a trend towards an increased use of quantitative methods in political science as well as in economics can be observed, the special issue underlines the importance of having a pluralistic approach for grasping the complex and multi-layered effects of the phenomenon. Of similar importance is the adoption of a comparative perspective that includes different world regions in order to understand the different roles of corruption in developing, transforming and developed countries alike. Dr. Tobias Debiel is Director of the Centre for Global Cooperation Research and of the Institute for Development and Peace (INEF). Since 2006, he is also Professor in International Relations and Development Policy, Institute of Political Science, University of Duisburg-Essen.     Abstract: Die wissenschaftliche Thematisierung städtischer Entwicklung bzw. lokalen Wandels vernachlässigt häufig die Eigenlogik und Eigendynamik der lokalen Ebene und die Gestaltungswirkung lokaler Akteure. Problematisch daran ist, dass einerseits komplexe und variable Akteurs-Institutionen-Geflechte und die auf sie einwirkenden, sich verändernden Einflussfaktoren, andererseits die hiermit einhergehenden Responses lokaler Eliten übersehen werden.     Abstract: „Religion und Politik“ wurde spätestens mit den jüngsten Revolutionen im arabischen Raum ein zentrales Thema für die Demokratisierungsforschung. Wie beeinflussen religiöse Akteure Demokratisierung? Welche Faktoren bedingen ihre Einflussnahme? Der vorliegende Band bietet erste Antworten auf diese Fragen. Hierfür wird ein theoretisch-konzeptionelles Analyseraster zur Untersuchung der Rolle religiöser Akteure im Regimewandel entwickelt. In keiner der behandelten jungen mehrheitlich christlichen, christlich-orthodoxen oder muslimischen Demokratien haben religiöse Akteure das Ergebnis des jeweiligen Transformationsprozesses bestimmt. Sie haben durch ihre politische und gesellschaftliche Einflussnahme aber zu Prozessen der Erosion autoritärer Herrschaft und zur Demokratisierung beigetragen. Die Möglichkeiten religiöser Akteure auf Demokratisierung einzuwirken, hängen vor allem von ihrer Organisationsform und der formalrechtlichen sowie de facto Stellung gegenüber dem politischen Regime ab. Ihre Ziele, Mittel und die politische Tragweite ihrer vertretenen Theologien sind vornehmlich davon bedingt, wie viel Unabhängigkeit sie vom Staat genießen.     Abstract: The assumption that humans are cognitively and morally superior to other animals is fundamental to social democracies and legal systems worldwide. It legitimises treating members of other animal species as inferior to humans. The last few decades have seen a growing awareness of this issue, as evidence continues to show that individuals of many other species have rich mental, emotional and social lives. Bringing together leading experts from a range of disciplines, this volume identifies the key barriers to a definition of moral respect that includes nonhuman animals. It sets out to increase concern, empathy and inclusiveness by developing strategies that can be used to protect other animals from exploitation in the wild and from suffering in captivity. The chapters link scientific data with normative and philosophical reflections, offering unique insight into controversial issues around the ethical, political and legal status of other species

It highlights the causal mechanisms - framing, resource mobilisation, socialisation, among others - that link the international and transnational to the local, emphasising the methods required to measure them. Contributors examine specific mechanisms leading to particular outcomes in civil conflicts ranging from Chechnya, to Afghanistan, to Sudan, to Turkey. Transnational Dynamics of Civil War thus provides a significant contribution to debates motivating the broader move to mechanism-based forms of explanation, and will engage students and researchers of international relations, comparative politics and conflict processes"--
