    Kurzfassung: The purpose of this research is to give a voice to nameless and countless stories that represent the personal lived experiences of Sub-Saharan African immigrants in the US. The authors believe that telling our own stories from our own perspectives is important and empowering because when others tell our stories there are omissions and misrepresentations and a lot of stereotyping. This book seeks to produce a more specific description of Sub-Saharan African immigration in the US by recording our reflections, experiences, and strategies of coping, as well as those of the participants. We hope that the insights gained from the research in this book will be used by immigrant communities, academic institutions, and governmental agencies in advocating for immigration policies that positively impact the lived experiences of Sub-Saharan African immigrants, and in planning support interventions.Their voices are heard as they narrate their experiences, which are presented in the book under major themes that emerged from the interviews. These include how and why Sub-Saharan Africans immigrate to the United States of America (USA), their perceptions before, during and after the process of immigration, the challenges they face as they adjust, adapt, and settle in the USA, and the coping strategies they devise. The authors argue that issues of identity and lack of platforms where they can express their concerns as Sub-Saharan African immigrants and be heard are lacking. The authors are also using a phenomenological qualitative approach of collecting and interpreting participants` personal narratives and their lived experiences. (Umschlagtext)

    Kurzfassung: This volume by the Rock Art Network (RAN) presents the successes and challenges faced by rock art managers, researchers, conservators, and caretaker communities from around the globe, and describes how they are addressed through local action. A principal tenet of the Rock Art Network is the potential for improved collaboration between professionals and communication with the public to positively affect the preservation of the world`s rock art. Over fifty entries detail how network members have engaged each other, the public, and the heritage to pursue this vision.Drawing upon colloquia held in 2018 and 2019, this work is the third in a series of Getty Conservation Institute-organized rock art publications presenting the work of the Rock Art Network. In 2018, network members visited rock art sites in California and Texas and organized a series of presentations at the Institute. In 2019, the colloquium was held in France and Spain, and members visited subterranean sites and their replicas, which are world-renowned and draw significant numbers of tourists.During these two meetings, the Rock Art Network cemented its vision for the future of rock art preservation and charted a course for the organization`s future sustainability and contributions to the field.

    Kurzfassung: "We are, all of us, everywhere, always, enmeshed in a web of rules and constraints. Rules fix the beginning and end of the working day and the school year, direct the ebb and flow of traffic on the roads, dictate who can be married to whom and how, place the fork to the right or the left of the plate, lay down the meter and rhyme scheme of a Petrarchan sonnet, and order the rites of birth and death. Cultures notoriously differ as to the content of their rules, but there is no culture without rules. In this book, historian of science Lorraine Daston adopts a long term perspective for studying rules from diverse sources, including monastic orders, cookbooks, and mathematical algorithms. She argues that in the Western tradition most rules can be characterized as one of the following: tools of measurement and calculation, models or paradigms, or laws. Moreover, they exist on spectra from specific to general, flexible to rigid and the specific-to-general, and universal-to-particular. In investigating how rules work, how they don't work, how they've changed across time, and why exceptions are necessary, Daston paints a vivid picture of Western civilization from the antiquity to the present"--

Both political elites and everyday citizens are divided into rival and mutually antagonistic partisan camps, with each camp questioning the political legitimacy and democratic commitments of the other side. Does this polarization pose threats to democracy itself? What can make some democratic institutions resilient in the face of such challenges? Democratic Resilience brings together a distinguished group of specialists to examine how polarization affects the performance of institutional checks and balances as well as the political behavior of voters, civil society actors, and political elites. The volume bridges the conventional divide between institutional and behavioral approaches to the study of American politics and incorporates historical and comparative insights to explain the nature of contemporary challenges to democracy. It also breaks new ground to identify the institutional and societal sources of democratic resilience

Anxiety is the focus of increasing preoccupation and intervention in middle-class America and the late modern world. It is reportedly the most common mental illness in the United States, affecting almost a quarter of its adult population every year. Views diverge on what this means. This work is for readers who are intrigued by the exponential rise in reported rates of anxiety across the lifespan and by all the talk about anxiety, dissatisfied with non-sociological and symptom-based accounts of mental health, and open-minded enough to consider the self-help phenomenon as more than an oppressive craze driven by capitalist industry, neoliberal ideology, complicit publishers, formulaic writers, and irreflexive consumers.     Kurzfassung: "The Making of White American Identity traces the development of whiteness as a distinctive collective identification, from the early colonial period through to the January 6, 2021, assault on the Capitol Building in Washington, D.C. The theory of Cultural Trauma provides the framework for mapping and analyzing this process. The central argument is that whiteness is a mobilizing ideology, articulated and communicated over generations by individuals and carrier groups that make use of various means of mass media, from traditional print and visual media to the internet. In analyzing this transmission, hot and cold forms and thick and thin identification are distinguished. Hot forms carry clear ideological messages, cool forms are more subtle, such as genres of country music and novels and films. Memorials, like those to the Confederacy, lie somewhere in between. The conflict over their removal, such as occurred in Charlottesville in 2017, is a key event in this analysis. The final chapter sums up the argument and discusses the future of whiteness in the U.S., when those who identify as white no longer constitute the majority of the population"--

From the Belt and Road initiative to the founding of new cooperation forums and special envoys, China's Rise in the Global South offers an in-depth look at China's foreign policy approach to the countries it considers its partners in South-South cooperation.Intervening in the emerging debate between liberals and realists about China's future as a great power, Murphy contends that China is constructing an alternate international order to interact with these regions, and this book provides policymakers and scholars of international relations with the tools to analyze it.

    Kurzfassung: The contributors in Ethnographic Refusals, Unruly Latinidades highlight the value of "radical inclusion" in their research and call for a critical self-reflexivity that marshals the power of bearing witness to move from rhetoric to praxis in support of these methodologies within anthropological perspectives. The essays in this collection do not offer simple solutions to histories of colonialism, patriarchy, and misogyny through which gender binaries and racial hierarches have been imposed and reproduced, but rather provide a crucial opportunity for reflection on and continued reimagination of the contours of Latinidad. These scholars deploy Latinx strategically as part of ongoing dialogues, understanding that their terminologies are inherently imprecise, contested, and constantly shifting. Each chapter explores how Latinx ethnographers and interlocutors work together in contexts of refusal--ever mindful of how power shapes these encounters and the analyses that emerge from them--as well as the extraordinary possibilities offered by ethnography and its role in ongoing social transformation. Citizens against Crime and Violence studies societal responses to crime and violence within one of Mexico's most affected regions, the state of Michoacán. Based on comparative ethnography conducted over twelve months by a team of anthropologists and sociologists across six localities of Michoacán, ranging from the most rural to the most urban, the contributors consider five varieties of societal responses: local citizen security councils that define security and attempt to influence its policing, including by self-defense groups; cultural activists looking to create safe 'cultural' fields from which to transform their social environment; organizations in the state capital that combine legal and political strategies against less visible violence (forced disappearance, gender violence, anti-LGBT); church-linked initiatives bringing to bear the church's institutionality, including to denounce 'state capture'; and women's organizations creating 'safe' networks allowing to influence violence prevention"--

    Kurzfassung: There is perhaps no object as uncanny as the corpse, and few topics yield as much cross-cultural anxiety as human mortality. Yet beliefs and practices around death never stand still. This book brings together scholars who are intrigued by today`s rapidly changing death practices and attitudes. New and different ways of treating the body and memorializing the dead are proliferating across global cities. What are the beliefs, values, and ontologies entwined with these emergent death practices? Are we witnessing a shifting relationship between the living and the dead?Using ethnographic, historical, and media-based approaches, the contributors to this volume focus on new attitudes and practices around mortality and mourning. Together, the chapters coalesce around the argument that two major currents run through the new death—reconfigurations of temporality and of intimacy. Whether they draw on "tradition" or on evolving technologies, people are reaching for new memorial objects to keep the dead present in their lives and new rituals to manage the timing and tempo of death. Pushing back against the folklorization endemic to anthropological studies of death practices and the whiteness of death studies as a field, the chapters strive to override divisions between the Global South and the Anglophone world, focusing instead on syncretization, globalization, and magic within the mundane. Holmes' Material ist erschütternd und eindrucksvoll: Er wanderte mit seinen Begleiter*innen illegal durch die Wüste nach Arizona und wurde mit ihnen inhaftiert, bis sie abgeschoben wurden. Er lebte bei indigenen Familien in den Bergen von Oaxaca und in Farmarbeitslagern in den USA, baute Mais und Erdbeeren an und begleitete kranke Arbeiter*innen in Krankenhäuser. Diese »verkörperte Anthropologie« (Embodied Anthropology) vertieft unser theoretisches Verständnis dafür, wie schnell soziale Ungleichheiten in der Gesellschaft - und besonders im Gesundheitswesen - als normal und natürlich wahrgenommen werden.

    Kurzfassung: Im Sommer 1990 erteilte das Bayerische Kultusministerium die Genehmigung für die Einrichtung des Diplomstudiengangs "Sprachen, Wirtschafts- und Kulturraumstudien". Dieses Studienmodell wurde gleichsam über Nacht zu einem wahrlich überwältigenden Erfolg, da sich bereits im ersten Semester im Winter 1990 über 600 Studierende einschreiben ließen. Der Studiengang ist mittlerweile eine feste Größe innerhalb der Lern- und Forschungskultur der Universität Passau und er ist fortlaufend an neue wissenschaftliche Herausforderungen und an hochschulpolitische Entwicklungen angepasst worden. Die Popularität und die Qualität des Studienmodells wurden 2011 eindrucksvoll unter Beweis gestellt, als der Stifterverband für die deutsche Wissenschaft Studierende aller Fachrichtungen aufrief, solche Studiengänge zu benennen, die sie in besonderer Weise als preiswürdig erachteten. Bei diesem Wettbewerb wurde der Passauer Bachelorstudiengang "Kulturwirtschaft / International Cultural and Business Studies" mit "Magna cum laude" als zweitbester Studiengang Deutschlands ausgezeichnet. Das dreißigjährige Bestehen des Studienmodells wurde im Wintersemester 2020/21 mit einer Ringvorlesung gefeiert. Die Vorträge liegen im vorliegenden Band nun in gedruckter Form vor und dokumentieren die Vielfalt von Themen und Methoden, zeigen aber auch die künftigen Perspektiven kulturwirtschaftlicher Forschung auf.     Kurzfassung: Pionnier de l`ethnologie préhistorique, André Leroi-Gourhan (1911-1986) est l`auteur d`une œuvre foisonnante qui s`est attachée à explorer les multiples facettes de l`Homme et à renouveler le champ des sciences humaines au XXe siècle, singulièrement le champ des études sur l`art paléolithique. Dès ses premiers travaux, il consacre une place prépondérante à l`art et à l`esthétique lors de ses voyages au Japon et en Asie comme en témoigne ses Pages oubliées sur le Japon auxquelles Jean-Christophe Bailly consacre son article.Comme le montre Philippe Soulier de ce dossier, Leroi-Gourhan n`a cessé, tout au long de son parcours intellectuel, de discuter les principes de l`histoire de l`art pour les intégrer progressivement dans une approche globale et scientifique soucieuse d`établir la part entre les faits et les interprétations. Jusqu`à ses derniers cours au Collège de France, il met à l`épreuve les analyses et les méthodes qu`il a développées tout au long de son parcours dont les deux tomes de l`Évolution et techniques et Le Geste et la Parole constituent aujourd`hui encore des synthèses stimulantes pour les chercheurs. Etudiant l`évolution de l`homo sapiens, tant sur le plan des transformations morphologiques que des inventions techniques, l`œuvre de Leroi-Gourhan accorde à la vie et aux domaines de l`esthétique une attention constante, montrant le caractère indissociable des différentes activités humaines. Marc Groenen revient ainsi sur la place de l`esthétique dans l`anthropologie de Leroi-Gourhan, tandis que Michel Guérin prolonge et poursuit sa réflexion sur le geste. Certains articles explorent les problèmes que l`art pariétal et préhistorique continue de poser à nos regards contemporains au-delà du cercle restreint des spécialistes comme en témoignent, parmi d`autres, les textes de Philippe Grosos, Ségolène Lepiller, Rémi Labrusse, Renaud Ego...Plus qu`un hommage à André Leroi-Gourhan, le présent volume a pour objectif de montrer en quoi les intuitions, les méthodes et les concepts qui ponctuent sa pensée peuvent, aujourd`hui encore, guider la compréhension des phénomènes esthétiques et techniques, l`analyse des œuvres et la fonction symbolique de l`art. Outre la réédition de deux textes difficilement trouvables de Leroi-Gourhan, le volume est composé, dans une première partie, d`articles qui trai­tent explicitement un aspect de son œuvre, en le prolongeant parfois ou en le confrontant à d`autres auteurs. Viennent s`y ajouter ensuite une série de textes qui permettent d`élargir l`horizon des questions dont l`œuvre de Leroi-Gourhan hérite ou qu`elle partage au sein de son époque.     Kurzfassung: In 1933, John A. Lomax and his son Alan set out as emissaries for the Library of Congress to record the folksong of the "American Negro" in several southern African American prisons. Listening to the Lomax Archive: The Sonic Rhetorics of African American Folksong in the 1930s asks how the Lomaxes' field recordings--including their prison recordings and a long-form oral history of jazz musician Jelly Roll Morton--contributed to a new mythology of Americana for a nation in the midst of financial, social, and identity crises. Stone argues that folksongs communicate complex historical experiences in a seemingly simple package, and can thus be a key element--a sonic rhetoric--for interpreting the ebb and flow of cultural ideals within contemporary historical moments. He contends that the Lomaxes, aware of the power of folk music, used the folksongs they collected to increase national understanding of and agency for the subjects of their recordings even as they used the recordings to advance their own careers. Listening to the Lomax Archive gives readers the opportunity to listen in on these seemingly contradictory dualities, demonstrating that they are crucial to the ways that we remember and write about the subjects of the Lomaxes' archive and other repositories of historicized sound. This book brings together settler colonialism, feminist ethnography, collaborative and activist ethnography, emotional communities, and standpoint research to look at the links between structural, extreme, and everyday violences across time and space.Indigenous Women and Violence is built on engaging case studies that highlight the individual and collective struggles that Indigenous women face from the racial and gendered oppression that structures their lives. Gendered violence has always been a part of the genocidal and assimilationist projects of settler colonialism, and it remains so today. These structures and the forms of violence inherent to them&;are driving criminalization and victimization of Indigenous men and women, leading to escalating levels of assassination, incarceration, or transnational displacement of Indigenous people, and especially Indigenous women.This volume brings together the potent ethnographic research of eight scholars who have dedicated their careers to illuminating the ways in which Indigenous women have challenged communities, states, legal systems, and social movements to promote gender justice. Federico tells the remarkable story of willpower, curiosity, hard work, and passion coming together to change one man&;s life forever.As a child growing up in a small rural town in southern Mexico, Jimenez Caballero faced challenges that most of us cannot imagine, let alone overcome. From a young age, Federico worked tirelessly to contribute to his large family, yet his restless spirit often got him into trouble. Finding himself in the middle of a village-wide catastrophe, he was exiled to a boarding school in Oaxaca City where he was forced to become independent, resilient, and razor-sharp in order to stay afloat. Through his incredible people skills, bravery, and a few nudges from his bold mother, Federico found himself excelling in his studies and climbing the ranks in Oaxaca City. He always held a deep love and respect for his Mixtec Indigenous roots and began to collect Indigenous jewelry and textiles. Through a series of well-timed connections, Federico met his wife Ellen, and, shortly afterward, he came to the United States as a researcher at the University of California, Los Angeles, in the late 1960s.Carrying his passion for Indigenous jewelry with him from Oaxaca, Federico owned a series of shops in Los Angeles and sold jewelry at flea markets to well-known Hollywood stars. Over the years, he cultivated relationships and became a philanthropist as well as the owner of a museum in Oaxaca City. This book is the inspiring first-person account of eighty years in the life of a man who moved from humble beginnings to the bright lights of Hollywood, following his passion and creating long-lasting relationships as he climbed the ladder of success.     Kurzfassung: A fascinating case study of the archaeological site at Murujuga, AustraliaLocated in the Dampier Archipelago of Western Australia, Murujuga is the single largest archaeological site in the world. It contains an estimated one million petroglyphs, or rock art motifs, produced by the Indigenous Australians who have historically inhabited the archipelago. To date, there has been no comprehensive survey of the site's petroglyphs or those who created them. Since the 1960s, regional mining interests have caused significant damage to this site, destroying an estimated 5 to 25 percent of the petroglyphs in Murujuga. Today, Murujuga holds the unenviable status of being one of the most endangered archaeological sites in the world.José Antonio González Zarandona provides a full postcolonial analysis of Murujuga as well as a geographic and archaeological overview of the site, its ethnohistory, and its considerable significance to Indigenous groups, before examining the colonial mistreatment of Murujuga from the seventeenth century to the present. Drawing on a range of postcolonial perspectives, Zarandona reads the assaults on the rock art of Murujuga as instances of what he terms "landscape iconoclasm": the destruction of art and landscapes central to group identity in pursuit of ideological, political, and economic dominance. Viewed through the lens of landscape iconoclasm, the destruction of Murujuga can be understood as not only the result of economic pressures but also as a means of reinforcing—through neglect, abandonment, fragmentation, and even certain practices of heritage preservation—the colonial legacy in Western Australia. Murujuga provides a case study through which to examine, and begin to reject, archaeology's global entanglement with colonial intervention and the politics of heritage preservation

    Kurzfassung: This book attempts to reintegrate women into the socio-political milieu of early medieval Orissa. Its sources are inscriptions, mostly Sanskrit, that date from the seventh century to the end of the reign of the Imperial Ganga ruler, Anantavarman Codagangadeva (CE 1078-1147). The evidence indicates that royal and non-royal women had varying but undeniably important roles to play in the socio-political fabric of this prominent regional entity. The Bhauma-Kara dynasty (c. mid-eighth/ninth-late tenth century) that witnessed the rule of six women, four of them in succession, is a case in point. In addition, the palpable presence of several other royal and non-royal women is consistently documented in the epigraphic record. This is an aspect that has received very little attention in secondary works, thereby rendering this study a pioneering one. The work follows on from Rangachari's earlier Invisible Women, Visible Histories: Gender, Polity and Society in North India (7th to 12th century ad), which had focused on important gendered aspects of early medieval north India through an analysis of literary and epigraphic sources of Kashmir, Kanauj, Bengal and Bihar. The invisibilization of women, whereby their presence is routinely ignored or trivialized, was, similarly, its underlying essence.

Many conservatives dismiss climate change and Darwinism as liberal fictions, arguing that "tenured radicals" have coopted the sciences and other disciplines. Some progressives, especially in the universities, worry that science's celebration of objectivity and neutrality masks its attachment to Eurocentric and patriarchal values. As we grapple with the implications of climate change and revolutions in fields from biotechnology to robotics to computing, it is crucial to understand how scientific authority functions-and where it has run up against political and cultural barriers. Science under Fire reconstructs a century of battles over the cultural implications of science in the United States. Andrew Jewett reveals a persistent current of criticism which maintains that scientists have injected faulty social philosophies into the nation's bloodstream under the cover of neutrality. This charge of corruption has taken many forms and appeared among critics with a wide range of social, political, and theological views, but common to all is the argument that an ideologically compromised science has produced an array of social ills. Jewett shows that this suspicion of science has been a major force in American politics and culture by tracking its development, varied expressions, and potent consequences since the 1920s.
