    Kurzfassung: The research for this book was motivated by speculations about the religious movements that may have influenced the plans and arrangements of temples built by the Hoysalas of Karnataka in the period between the twelfth and thirteenth centuries. It investigates the causes for the accelerated pace of these constructions; enquires about what served as catalysts for the incorporation of multiple shrines within structures; examines the factors that gave momentum to the sanctification of a variety of deities within them; and studies the characteristics of their style as it was manifested in the temples they commissioned. Thought the finest of these are in the Imperial Hoysala Style (in either the Halebid or Koravangala types), all of the architectural output does not necessarily fall into these categories, some displaying a plurality of characteristics from earlier regional idioms. Filmant tour à tour des figures prophétiques ivoiriennes, des cultes vodû au Togo, des rituels célébrant les divinités brésiliennes connues sous le nom de caboclos et les cérémonies du Tôhé des Indiens pumé au Venezuela, Vivre avec les dieux croise ainsi, de manière unique, anthropologie visuelle, anthropologie de la maladie et anthropologie religieuse.     Kurzfassung: This book explores the proliferation and spread of Brazilian-born religious forms and practices throughout the world. The global diffusion of Brazilian religions provides an excellent lens to understand contemporary religious forms. As the book shows, religious movements as diverse as Santo Daime, Candomblé, Capoeira, John of God, and Brazilian style Pentecostalism and Catholicism, have become immensely popular in many places outside Brazil.     Kurzfassung: In times of extreme violence, what explains peace in some places? This book investigates geographic variation in Hindu-Muslim violence in Gujarat in 2002, an event witnessed closely by the author. It compares peaceful and violent towns, villages, and neighbourhoods to study how political violence spreads. A combination of statistical and ethnographic methods unpack the mechanisms of crowd behaviour, intergroup relations, and political incentives. Macro-level risk factors that led to the violence are analysed to provide a close understanding of the behaviour of people who participated in the violence, were targeted by it and, often, compelled to carry on living alongside their perpetrators. Findings systematically demonstrate the implicit political logic of the violence. Most of all, by moving up close to the people caught in the middle of violence; findings highlight the interplay between politics, the spatial environment, and the cognitive decision-making processes of individuals.

    Kurzfassung: The basis of Chinese religious culture, and with that many aspects of daily life, was the threat and fear of demonic attacks. These were inherently violent and could only be counteracted by violence as well - even if this reactive violence was masked by euphemisms such as execution, expulsion, exorcisms and so on. At the same time, violence was a crucial dimension of the maintenance of norms and values, for instance in sworn agreements or in beliefs about underworld punishment. Violence was also an essential aspect of expressing respect through sacrificial gifts of meat (and in an earlier stage of Chinese culture also human flesh) and through a culture of auto-mutilation and ritual suicide. At the same time, conventional indigenous terms for violence such as bao 暴 were not used for most of these practices since they were not experienced as such, but rather justified as positive uses of physical force.

    Kurzfassung: Why was religion so important for rulers in the pre-modern world? And how did the world come to be dominated by just a handful of religious traditions, especially Christianity, Islam, and Buddhism? Drawing on sociology and anthropology, as well as a huge range of historical literature from all regions and periods of world history, Alan Strathern sets out a new way of thinking about transformations in the fundamental nature of religion and its interaction with political authority. His analysis distinguishes between two quite different forms of religiosity - immanentism, which focused on worldly assistance, and transcendentalism, which centred on salvation from the human condition - and shows how their interaction shaped the course of history. Taking examples drawn from Ancient Rome to the Incas or nineteenth-century Tahiti, a host of phenomena, including sacred kingship, millenarianism, state-church struggles, reformations, iconoclasm, and, above all, conversion are revealed in a new light.

    Kurzfassung: Based on eleven months of ethnographic fieldwork, this book explores the experiences of childless women in contemporary urban Georgia and their perspectives on infertility and assisted reproduction. It examines how assisted reproductive technologies intersect with local beliefs about reproduction, kinship, and descent. The study takes into account a comprehensive definition of assisted reproduction, encompassing not only medical technologies but also non-biomedical healing practices. The primary focus of this research revolves around questions related to family planning, the conception of childlessness, and assisted reproduction in the context of people's cosmologies. It particularly delves into their understanding of kin relations and the significance of parenthood in Georgian society, as well as its connection to broader demographic patterns. In doing so, it engages with debates about the nature of kinship and the role of biogenetic substance in the anthropology of kinship.
    Kurzfassung: Gestützt auf elf Monaten Feldforschung untersucht dieses Buch die Erfahrungen kinderloser Frauen im urbanen Georgien und ihren Umgang mit Unfruchtbarkeit und assistierter Reproduktion. Es analysiert, wie assistierte Reproduktionstechnologien mit den lokalen Vorstellungen von Reproduktion, Verwandtschaft und Deszendenz zusammenspielen. Als Grundlage wird eine weite Definition von assistierter Reproduktion vorgeschlagen, die nicht nur medizinische Technologien, sondern auch nicht-biomedizinische Heilpraktiken einschließt. Der Schwerpunkt dieser Forschung liegt auf Fragen zur Familienplanung, Vorstellungen von Kinderlosigkeit sowie assistierter Reproduktion im Kontext lokaler Kosmologien. Dabei wird insbesondere auf die Bedeutung von Verwandtschaft und Elternschaft sowie Verknüpfung mit allgemeineren demographischen Entwicklungen eingegangen. Damit schließt diese Arbeit an Diskurse zur Natur von Verwandtschaft und der Rolle biogenetischer Substanz in der Verwandtschaftsethnologie an.

    Kurzfassung: 'Devotional Sovereignty' investigates the shifting conceptualization of sovereignty in the South Indian kingdom of Mysore during the reigns of Tipu Sultan (r. 1782-1799) and Krishnaraja Wodeyar III (r. 1799-1868). Tipu Sultan was a Muslim king famous for resisting British dominance until his death; Krishnaraja III was a Hindu king who succumbed to British political and administrative control. Despite their differences, the courts of both kings dealt with the changing political landscape by turning to the religious and mythical past to construct a royal identity for their kings. Caleb Simmons explores the ways in which these two kings and their courts modified and adapted pre-modern Indian notions of sovereignty and kingship in reaction to British intervention.

    Kurzfassung: During Israel's military operation in Gaza in the summer of 2014 the commanding officer of the Givati infantry brigade, Col. Ofer Vinter, called on his troops to fight "the terrorists who defame the God of Israel". This unprecedented call for religious war by a senior IDF commander caused an uproar, but it was just one symptom of a profound process of religionization, or de-secularization, that Israeli society has been going through since the turn of the twenty-first century. This book analyses and explains the reasons for the religionization of Israeli society, a process known in Hebrew as hadata. It argues that this process had its origins in the 1967 war, has been accelerating since 2000, and is manifested in a number of key social fields. It further argues that Jewish religion, inseparable from Jewish nationality, was embedded in Zionism from its inception at the end of the 19th Century but was subdued to a certain extent in favour of the national aspect in the interest of building a modern nation-state. In addition to discussing religionization in the military, the educational system, and the media of mass communications, the book includes a major chapter on the religionization of the Israeli visual fine arts field, a topic that has not been researched before now. Through careful examination of religionization, this book sheds light on a major development in Israeli society, which will additionally inform our understanding of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. As such, it is a key resource for students and scholars of Israel Studies, and those interested the relations between religion, politics and nationalism, secularization and new social movements

    Kurzfassung: "In Jesus for Zanzibar: Narratives of Pentecostal (Non)Belonging, Islam, and Nation Hans Olsson offers an ethnographic account of the lived experience and socio-political significance of newly arriving Pentecostal Christians in the Muslim majority setting of Zanzibar. This work analyzes how a disputed political partnership between Zanzibar and Mainland Tanzania intersects with the construction of religious identities. Undertaken at a time of political tensions, the case study of Zanzibar's largest Pentecostal church, the City Christian Center, outlines religious belonging as relationally filtered in-between experiences of social insecurity, altered minority / majority positions, and spiritual powers. Hans Olsson shows that Pentecostal Christianity, as a signifier of (un)wanted social change, exemplifies contested processes of becoming in Zanzibar that capitalizes on, and creates meaning out of, religious difference and ambient political tensions"--

    Kurzfassung: Die Europa-Idee, die in den Nachkriegsjahren wirksam war, ist heute verdunstet. Diese Idee war stark geprägt vom Christentum, dem der alte Kontinent seine geistige Einheit verdankt. Die Institutionen des Christentums sind dabei konkurrierenden Interessen ihrer Mitglieder ausgesetzt, verlieren deren Zustimmung in unterschiedlicher Weise und haben das konfliktträchtige Potential ihrer konfessionellen Vielfalt noch nicht ganz überwunden. Daneben haben sogenannte fundamentalistische Richtungen innerhalb traditioneller Weltreligionen – in Europa außer dem Christentum auch das Judentum und der Islam – regen Zulauf. Der Band hinterfragt die traditionelle Rolle religiöser Werte für die Union, ihre Transformation in der Geschichte und behandelt ihre Gegenwart und Zukunft. Letzteres tut er zum einen mit Hinblick auf die Frage nach der Zugehörigkeit des Islam zu Europa – in seiner gegenwärtigen Präsenz als auch in seinem historisch-kulturellen und philosophischen Einfluss –, zum anderen im Vergleich zwischen der (in sich noch unterschiedlichen) europäischen Konzeption des Verhältnisses von Religion und Staat und anderer westlicher Staaten, namentlich den USA

    Kurzfassung: This book traces religion and secularity in eleven countries not shaped by Western Christianity (Japan, China, Indonesia, India, Pakistan, Iran, Russia, Turkey, Israel, Egypt, and Morocco), and how they parallel or diverge from Charles Taylor's grand narrative of the North Atlantic world, A Secular Age (2007). In all eleven cases, the state - enhanced by post-colonial and post-imperial legacies - highly determines religious experience, by variably regulating religious belief, practice, property, education, and/or law. Taylor's core condition of secularity - namely, legal permissibility and social acceptance of open religious unbelief (Secularity III) - is largely absent in these societies. The areas affected by state regulation, however, differ greatly. In India, Israel and most Muslim countries, questions of religious law are central to state regulation. But it is religious education and organization in China and church property and public practice in Russia that bear the brunt. This book explains these differences using the concept of 'differential burdening'

    Kurzfassung: Die mündliche Tradition von Nias begann vor ca. 600 Jahren mit der Einwanderung einer kleinen Gruppe von der Westküste Sumatras nach Südnias. Die Physiognomie der Bewohner weist oft chinesische Züge auf. Die mündliche Tradition berichtet vom Beginn der Ahnenfiguren (adu) und von der Ahnenverehrung in Gomo, Börönadu. Hier in Gomo fanden diese Einwanderer ihre erste Heimat auf Nias. Sie brachten die Sitte, das Adat-Recht, mit. Sie führten die Schmiedekunst und das Zimmermannshandwerk ein. Jetzt erst konnte sich die einzigartige Architektur der niassischen Pfahlhäuser entwickeln. Die mündliche Tradition berichtet von den Errungenschaften dieser Neuzeit. Die Saembu-Figur in Gestalt einer schönen Frau und Göttin sowie die Tigerfigur werden in Prozession umhergetragen. Bei der Feier dieser beiden Prozessionen geht es darum, die Rechtsversammlung zur Erneuerung, Formulierung und Bestätigung der beschlossenen Gesetze abzuhalten.

    Kurzfassung: "Villagers in Indonesia hear a steady stream of stories about the injuries, abuses, and even deaths suffered by those who migrate in search of work. So why do hundreds of thousands of Indonesian workers continue to migrate every year? Carol Chan explores this question from the perspective of the origin community and provides a fascinating look at how gender, faith, and shame shape these decisions to migrate. Villagers evaluate men and women's migrations differently, leading to different ideas about which kinds of human or financial flows should be encouraged and which should be discouraged or even criminalize. Despite routine and well-documented instances of Indonesian migrant labor exploitation, some villagers still emphasize that a migrant's success or failure ultimately depends on that individual's morality, fate, and destiny. Indonesian villagers construct strategies for avoiding migration-related risks which are closely linked to faith and belief in supernatural agency. These strategies shape the flow of migration from the country and help to ensure the continued faith Indonesian people have in migration as an act of promise and hope."

    Kurzfassung: Is there an inevitable global violent clash unfolding between the world's largest religions: Islam and Christianity? Do religions cause violent conflicts, or are there other factors at play? How can we make sense of increasing reports of violence between Christian and Muslim ethnic communities across the world? By seeking to answer such questions about the relationship between religion and violence in today's world, Ziya Meral challenges popular theories and offers an alternative explanation, grounded on insights inferred from real cases of ethno-religious violence in Africa and the Middle East. The relationship between religion and violence runs deep and both are intrinsic to the human story. Violence leads to and shapes religion, while religion acts to enable violence as well as providing responses that contain and prevent it. However, with religious violence being one of the most serious challenges facing the modern world, Meral shows that we need to de-globalise our analysis and focus on individual conflicts, instead of attempting to provide single answers to complex questions

    Kurzfassung: Contemporary Singapore is simultaneously a small postcolonial multicultural nation state and a cosmopolitan global city. To manage fundamental contradictions, the state takes the lead in authoring the national narrative. This is partly an internal process of nation building, but it is also achieved through more commercially motivated and outward facing efforts at nation and city branding. Both sets of processes contribute to Singapore's capacity to influence foreign affairs, if only for national self-preservation. For a small state with resource limitations, this is mainly through the exercise of smart power, or the ability to strategically combine soft and hard power resources
