    Abstract: Intending Scotland reconsiders our understanding of the development of Scottish culture from the Enlightenment to the present day. The book recovers and reconnects Scottish thinkers from Hume and Reid in the eighteenth century, to Andrew Seth, Norman Kemp Smith and John Macmurray in the late nineteenth and twentieth centuries. It contextualises their work in relation to the development of Scottish anthropology and psychology, from which emerged, in the work of Ian Suttie and R. D. Laing, some of the most significant challenges to Freudian psychology. Craig uses this Scottish tradition to challenge theories of the nation over the last thirty years, providing critiques of Bhabha's 'hybridity' and of Anderson's 'imagined community', and of theories of 'the Other' within a postcolonial framework. Ranging over Scotland's intellectual and cultural history across three centuries, taking in gardens and gardeners as well as historians and historiographers, scientists and engineers as well as philosophers and psychologists, Intending Scotland presents a reinterpretation of Scottish cultural life as radical as the developments in the nation's contemporary politics. Key debates addressed in Intending Scotland include: *Challenges negative conceptions of the Scottish cultural past and of the failures of Scotland's cultural development *Sets Scotland's recent political development in the context of its cultural achievements in the twentieth century *Deals with major figures in Scottish culture - Hume, Reid - and shows how our modern understanding of them is dependent on the work of later Scottish thinkers *Engages with prominent critics in contemporary theory - Anderson, Derrida, Bhabha, Kearney - and develops a critique of them from a Scottish perspective.

    Abstract: How do we construct national identities in discourse? Which topics, which discursive strategies and which linguistic devices are employed to construct national sameness and uniqueness on the one hand, and differences to other national collectives on the other hand? The Discursive Construction of National Identity analyses discourses of national identity in Europe with particular attention to Austria. In the tradition of critical discourse analysis, the authors analyse current and on-going transformations in the self-and other definition of national identities using an innovative interdisciplinary approach which combines discourse-historical theory and methodology and political science perspectives. Thus, the rhetorical promotion of national identification and the discursive construction and reproduction of national difference on public, semi-public and semi-private levels within a nation state are analysed in much detail and illustrated with a huge amount of examples taken from many genres (speeches, focus-groups, interviews, media, and so forth). In addition to the critical discourse analysis of multiple genres accompanying various commemorative and celebratory events in 1995, this extended and revised edition is able to draw comparisons with similar events in 2005. The impact of socio-political changes in Austria and in the European Union is also made transparent in the attempts of constructing hegemonic national identities.     Abstract: Over the past few decades feminist media scholarship has flourished, to become a major influence on the fields of media, film and cultural studies. At the same time, the cultural shift towards post-feminism has raised questions about the continuing validity of feminism as a defining term for this work. This book explores the changing and often ambivalent relationship between the three terms women, feminism and media in the light of these recent debates. At the same time it places them within the broader discussions within feminist theory - about subjectivity, identity, culture, and narrative - of which they have formed a crucial part.The book is organised around four key topic areas. Fixing into Images offers a rethinking of one of the first preoccupations of feminist media analysis: the relationship between women and images. Narrating Femininity explores the narratives of femininity produced in media texts in the light of theories of narrative and identity. Real Women examines both the continuing absence of women voices from the genres of news and documentary, and their over-presence within popular reality media forms. Finally, Technologies of Difference examines the relationship between feminism, women and new media technologies. Throughout, the book explores key issues within feminist media studies both through specific examples and via critical engagement with the work of major theoretical writers.     Abstract: »Postkoloniale Traditionen« verbindet die Ansätze der postkolonialen Theorie und der Subaltern Studies mit einer modernen Ethnografie des ländlichen Südindiens. Dabei wird ein südindisches Dorf als ein Ort der Realisierung einer alternativen nicht-westlichen Moderne beschrieben. Zwei Merkmale der indischen Moderne werden herausgearbeitet: ihre Postkolonialität - das allgegenwärtige Erbe des Kolonialismus - und ihre Traditionalität - ihre Verhandlung in nicht-westlichen Idiomen. Die postkoloniale Moderne wird in dieser Dorfmonografie auf mikro- und infrapolitische Prozesse bezogen und somit einer ethnografischen Repräsentation zugänglich gemacht

    Abstract: Drawing on two decades of research this social and political history of North-Western Ghana traces the creation of new ethnic and territorial boundaries, categories and forms of self-understanding, and represents a major contribution to debates on ethnicity, colonialism and the 'production of history'. It explores the creation and redefinition of ethnic distinctions and commonalities by African and European actors, showing that ethnicity's power derives from a contradiction: while ethnic identities purport to be non-negotiable, creating permanent bonds, stability and security, the boundaries of the communities created and the associated traits and practices are malleable and adaptable to specific interests and contexts.

Dieser Band stellt das Spiel als einen zentralen Agenten von Wissensproduktion und Wissenschaftskultur vor und zeigt damit, dass Erkenntnis konstitutiv auf Spiel angewiesen ist. Während die zumeist phänomenologisch oder psycho-soziologisch ausgerichtete Literatur zum Spiel aus der Beobachterperspektive operiert, geht die hier gebotene Darstellung von der performativen Haltung des Teilnehmers aus. Spiel wird so nachvollziehbar als eine Bewegung im Zwischen, als eine Begegnung, die spekulative Brücken zwischen dem Erkennenden selbst und den Objekten der Erkenntnis schlagen kann.     Abstract: This book addresses cross-cultural representations of ethnic minority peoples by dominant society 'outsiders' and indigenous self-representation in the context of the 'New Media Nation'. In doing so, it explores the role of language, culture, identity and media in liberation struggles and the emergence of new political entities, and opens up issues of colonial oppression to public debate. It is intended to help inform policy in a variety of settings. Grounded in current perspectives on diaspora and homeland and drawing on Alia's work on minorities, media and identity as well as Bull's work on Maori socio-cultural issues and criminalisation of minorities, this volume offers a comparative, international perspective on the experiences of a broad range of ethnic minority peoples.
