    Kurzfassung: Our tarnished image in Europe: why has it become so pervasive? Since September 11, 2001, the attitudes of Europeans toward the United States have grown increasingly more negative. For many in Europe, the terrorist attack on New York City was seen as evidence of how American behavior elicits hostility and how it would be up to Americans to repent and change their ways. In this revealing look at the deep divide that has emerged, Russell A. Berman explores the various dimensions of contemporary European anti-Americanism. The author shows how, as the process of post cold war European unification has progressed, anti-Americanism has proven to be a useful ideology for the definition of a new European identity.

    Kurzfassung: Este estudio antropológico analiza los movimientos contraculturales de la ultima mitad del siglo XX, en el escenario de la península ibérica de los años 90, basándose principalmente en el caso de los rebotados de las ciudades que buscan en el campo el escenario de una alternativa, nacida del rechazo a la sociedad circundante y en construcción permanente. Back-to-the-land, new travellers, hippies, son todas palabras anglosajonas con las que se ha bautizado a estos grupos, mostrando la proveniencia de su nacimiento en los EE.UU de los 70 y el Reino Unido de los 90. En España, las influencias son determinantes, sobre todo de un movimiento llamado Rainbow, pero la contracultura es como todo, cultural, y en España, toma un matiz local.El estudio analiza los temas claves del nacimiento de este movimiento y lo que su existencia y desarrollo implica : el desencanto radical con el mundo actual y la sociedad de consumo, la lucha contra la banalidad y el nihilismo y la búsqueda de la conciencia, el desarrollo y la transformación personal, como solución propuesta a la transformación social. Para esto, siguen la vía romántica de la huida, el viaje y la construcción de crono-topos ideales, que en la práctica, encuentran todas las limitaciones y problemas que, por definición, atraviesa cualquier intento utópico en su vano intento de materialización. Con todo, estos movimientos y asentamientos alternativos resisten y forman redes y posibilidades por las que transitan miles de estos desencantados.Esta tesis esta basada en un trabajo de campo de larga duración, a través del cual, el antropólogo sufre un proceso de membresía y transformación que son la principal fuente, en el contraste con los otros de sus hipótesis, reflexiones y análisis

    Kurzfassung: La tesis tiene como objeto estudiar, a través de los oficios palatinos, la sociedad en la Castilla de los los siglos XV y XVI, en los tiempos de los Reyes Católicos. El instrumento o documento básico a partir del cual he podido efectuar la investigación, es un manuscrito. Se trata de una copia, seguramente del siglo XVIII, de la segunda versión del LIBRO DE LA CAMARA REAL DEL PRINCIPE DON JUAN ET OFICIOS DE SU CASA E SERVICIOS que escribió en 1548 GONZALO FERNÁNDEZ DE OVIEDO Y VALDÉS. El objeto científico es la sociología histórica. El objetivo prioritario es la estructura social, el desarrollo de la vida cotidiana en la Cámara del Príncipe, que por ocupar y desenvolverse en un espacio social, histórico, político y laboral en un tiempo determinado considero un micro-cosmos que me permite formular proposiciones y conclusiones. Se trata de descubrir las relaciones e interrelaciones de ese grupo humano. Podremos conocer: la importancia de los cargos que se ocupan, las funciones atribuidas a cada oficio; los procedimientos de selección y las diferentes clases de retribuciones; los protocolos y etiquetas utilizados. Los comportamientos y pautas de conducta se derivan de la sociedad estamental, patriarcal, extensa y sacralizada y se pueden encuadrar en cuatro grandes bloques: primero, las que implican aceptación del modelo social, integración comunitaria; segundo, las que refieren asunción de las exigencias y vínculos convencionales; tercero, las que significan la defensa del sistema y cuarto, las que establecen compensación y reconocimiento de los servicios prestados. Se resaltan los valores - contravalores y los tipos o modelos, así como los estereotipos y pautas culturales. No se olvidan en esta exposición a personajes centrales de nuestra Historia, como son la Reina Católica y el Príncipe Dn Juan, ni al sistema de gobierno: una Monarquía, unos Reyes, varios Reinos

    Anmerkung: Medien sind Risiken und Ressourcen für das Aufwachsen von Kindern. Sozialisation in einer von Medien geprägten Gesellschaft heißt, einen kompetenten Medienumgang zu lernen und sich das eigene Selbst- und Weltbild medial vermittelt anzueignen. In gängigen Sozialisationstheorien werden die Medien meist nur am Rande behandelt. Hier wird eine Mediensozialisationstheorie skizziert, welche Konzepte der Sozialisation, des gesellschaftlichen Wandels und des Wandels im Medienumfeld integriert. Als empirische Basis werden repräsentative Befunde zum Medienumgang von Heranwachsenden aus der Schweiz von den 1970er-Jahren bis zur Jahrtausendwende vorgestellt und Vergleiche zu internationalen Daten gezogen. Aus dem Vergleich der Mediensozialisation von drei Generationen werden Konstanten und Wandel herausgearbeitet. Die Arbeit wurde mit dem UBS-Habilitationspreis der Philosophischen Fakultät der Universität Zürich ausgezeichnet

    Kurzfassung: Die Arbeit geht von der Hypothese aus, dass Prozesse kollektiver Identität einen wesentlichen Einfluss auf die Mobilisierungsfähigkeit sozialer Bewegungen haben. Es geht darum, zu untersuchen, welche Auswirkungen Dauerhaftigkeit, Flexibilität, Inklusivität und Exklusivität kollektiver Identitätskonstruktionen auf Art und Dauer des Engagements der AktivistInnen haben. Im Fokus steht insbesondere die Verschränkungen von Politik und Alltag, da dort, wo Bewegungshandeln und Alltagshandeln der AktivistInnen ineinander übergehen oder miteinander konfrontiert werden, Prozesse kollektiver Identität eine besonders wichtige Rolle spielen. Wie diese Prozesse in sozialen Bewegungen ablaufen, welche Formen sie annehmen und aus welchen Elementen sie sich zusammensetzen wird für die Autonomen und die Schwulenbewegung anhand einer Mikro-Diskursanalyse ihrer Bewegungs-Zeitschriften untersucht

    Kurzfassung: In der Studie von Dominique Schirmer wird erstens Lebensstilforschung als Mikrotheorie gesellschaftlichen Wandels vorgestellt und am Untersuchungsthema empirisch überprüft. Sie bietet zweitens eine Einführung und Analyse der gegenwärtigen festlandchinesischen Soziologie und Lebensstilforschung - beides fehlt bisher in der westlichen Chinaforschung und Soziologie. Drittens wird die Wechselwirkung Soziologie - Praxis theoretisch diskutiert und das Verhältnis Soziologie - Politik - gesellschaftlicher Wandel in der VR China untersucht. Dort wendet sich die zunehmend selbstbewusste Soziologie an Politik und Gesellschaft, welche zur neuen Definitionsmacht gegenüber der Politik wird.

    Kurzfassung: Ina Weigelt beschäftigt sich mit dem "Problem" Hooligans. Dabei versucht sie nicht, sich an gängigen Klischees entlang zu hangeln, sondern vielmehr durch Zusammentragen unterschiedlichster Quellen ein wahrheitsgemäßes Bild der Subkultur zu zeichnen. Die besonderen Spezifika und Verhaltensweisen der "Hools" (u. a. äußerliche Erscheinung, Hierarchisierung, Alkohol- und Drogenkonsum, Männlichkeit und Körperlichkeit, Freund- und Feindschaften etc.) werden - frei von Vorurteilen -ausführlich beschrieben. Die besonderen Probleme dieser Subkultur werden ebenfalls angesprochen, so z. B. das Bild der Frau innerhalb der Szene, die Rolle der Medien bei der Gewaltentstehung und die politische Orientierung der Hools. Des Weiteren werden die Geschichte und Entwicklungen der Subkultur näher beleuchtet; einschließlich eines Ost-West-Vergleiches. Bei der Ursachenforschung trägt die Autorin die verschiedensten Expertenmeinungen zusammen, um der Bandbreite der möglichen Gründe für Zuschauerausschreitungen bei sportlichen Großereignissen auf die Spur zu kommen. Schließlich werden die Präventionsmaßnahmen - praktiziert durch die Sozialarbeit, die Polizei, den Staat, die Ordner und die Vereine/den DFB - einer Analyse unterzogen. Für alle, die sich mit dem Phänomen Fußballausschreitungen beschäftigen wollen (oder müssen), ist dieses Buch eine gelungene Zusammenstellung der Aspekte der Subkultur.

    Kurzfassung: Es kommt nicht oft vor, dass man innerhalb einer Arbeit sowohl einen generativ-grammatischen als auch einen soziolinguistischen Ansatz findet. Die vorliegende Studie versucht diesen Brückenschlag anhand von Daten aus der französischen Interrogativsyntax, u.a. zur wh-in-situ-Form, zur stilistischen Inversion, zur langen Extraktion und zur que-qui-Problematik. Gradierte Grammatikalitätsurteile bilden die empirische Hauptdatenquelle, wobei auch Daten aus qualitativen Interviewerhebungen und Lesezeitmessungen einbezogen werden. Zugleich werden methodologische Fragen zur Messbarkeit von Grammatikalität behandelt. Die Auswertung des empirischen Materials revidiert und präzisiert einige vertraute Auffassungen. Beispielsweise erweist sich die Evidenzgrundlage für die Annahme von LF-Bewegung bei wh-in-situ-Strukturen des Französischen als überraschend dünn. In einem weiteren Schritt wird der Einfluss externer Faktoren auf die Grammatikalitätsurteile statistisch untersucht. Hierbei beschränkt sich die Arbeit nicht auf den Standardsatz soziodemographischer Merkmale. Sie bezieht das Lebensstilkonzept aus der soziokulturellen Theorie von Pierre Bourdieu ein, das sich in der Tat als besonders relevant für die Identifikation und Erklärung von Variationsphänomenen in der Grammatik (z. B. Präferenzen für bestimmte Wortstellungsvarianten) erweist. Diese Studie zeigt, wie die gemeinsame Berücksichtigung einer grammatiktheoretischen und sozialstrukturellen Analyse zu einem präziseren Verständnis der französischen wh-Interrogation führt.

    Kurzfassung: Main description: In dieser Arbeit werden die Universaltheorien Niklas Luhmanns (1927-1998) und Charles Peirces (1839-1914) zum ersten Mal grundlegend aufeinander bezogen. Auf der Basis einer kritischen funktionalen Analyse von System- und Zeichentheorie wird ein Zeichensystem neu konstruiert, dessen Auflöse- und Rekombinationsvermögen höher ist als das der genannten Einzeldisziplinen. Die theoretisch erzielten Ergebnisse lassen sich als Grundlage für konkrete sprach- und literaturwissenschaftliche oder auch soziologische Problemstellungen verwenden. Zudem kann das Buch als Einführung in das Denken Luhmanns und Peirces gelesen werden.
    Kurzfassung: Main description: This study is the first to make a systematic attempt to relate the universal theories of Niklas Luhmann (1927-1998) and Charles S. Peirce (1839-1914) to one another. On the basis of a critical functional analysis of systems theory and semiotic theory, a newly designed semiotic system is proposed that displays a higher resolution and recombination potential than the individual disciplines involved. The theoretical results can be used as a foundation for dealing with concrete linguistic, literary, or sociological problems. In addition, the book can be read as an introduction to the thinking of Luhmann and Peirce.

In this age of multiculturalism, why have German Americans gone into ethnic eclipse - and where have they ended up? Becoming Old Stock represents the first in-depth exploration of that question. The book describes how German Philadelphians reinvented themselves in the early twentieth century, especially after World War I brought a nationwide anti-German backlash."

It also examines working-class and Catholic Germans, who came to share a common identity with other European immigrants, but not with newly arrived black Southerners."

The chapters cover such topics as: race, home ownership and family structure; the status of children; the consumer price index; a historical perspective on the standard of living; worker rights and labor strength in advanced economies. In addition, they explore two economic systems delivering the goods--the free enterprise system of the United States and the European social welfare state. They then present international comparisons and highlight the relative advantages and disadvantages of these two systems.

    Kurzfassung: Was bedeutet das Trauma des Genozids von 1915 für Armenier in Griechenland heute? Welche Rolle spielt es für Identität und Gemeinschaft in der Diaspora? Die vorliegende Ethnographie untersucht die komplexen Prozesse von Identitäts- und Gemeinschaftsbildung bei Menschen in der Diaspora am Beispiel öffentlicher Rituale und privater Erinnerungsarbeit der armenischen Minderheit Griechenlands. Sie liefert damit einen empirischen Beitrag zu einer Theorie von Diaspora und zur ethnologischen Erforschung kollektiver Traumata. Das Buch verbindet aktuelle Diskussionen zur Bedeutung von Transnationalität und Lokalität für Identitäten in der Diaspora mit Fragen nach dem Verhältnis von kollektiven und individuellen Erinnerungsprozessen an gewaltsame Ereignisse

    Kurzfassung: Die Arbeit befasst sich mit dem mandatum iuris gentium und der völkerrechtlichen Treuhand. Im ersten historischen Teil werden die rechts- und ideengeschichtlichen Wurzeln beider Institute nachvollzogen. Im zweiten Teil werden problematische Fälle des modernen Völkerrechts dargestellt, in denen das Mandats- bzw. Treuhandrecht in völkerrechtlichen Streitfragen besondere Relevanz hatte und z. T noch hat, z.B. Südwestafrika/Namibia, Israel/Palästina und Nauru. Im dritten und letzten Teil wird die Zukunft der völkerrechtlichen Treuhand untersucht, insbesondere in besonders aktuellen Fällen wie Kosovo, Afghanistan und Ost-Timor, die de facto mit der völkerrechtlichen Treuhand vergleichbar sind. In diesem Teil werden auch Vorschläge zu Wiederbelebung des UN-Treuhandsystems, auch im Umweltvölkerrecht, und ähnliche Vorschläge aus der Völkerrechtslehre diskutiert. Insgesamt wird festgestellt, dass der Treuhandgedanke seit seiner Entstehung im Völkerrecht nicht an Aktualität eingebüßt hat.

    Kurzfassung: Das Ziel der Studie ist es, das komplexe Phänomen sogenannter anonymer Begräbnisse als Erfahrung und als kulturelle Konstruktion lesbar zu machen. Sie geht dabei von zutiefst vergeschlechtlichten familienbezogenen und öffentlich-nationalen sepulkralen Repräsentationen aus, die sich ins kollektive Gedächtnis der westlichen Moderne eingeschrieben haben und sich bis heute in sozialen und symbolischen Ordnungen reformulieren. Die Arbeit kombiniert qualitativ-empirisch kultur- und sozial-theoretische Positionen und Methoden und führt selbst erhobenes Primärmaterial aus heterogenen Quellen zusammen. Frauen und Männer erzählen zu ihrer Motivation, das eigene Grab als anonymes zu bestimmen, und von ihrer Erinnerungsvorsorge, die ein individuelles Bezeichnen einer Grablage entbehrlich werden lässt. Nahestehende und Friedhofsbeschäftigte erlauben Einblicke in alltägliche Aneignungs- und Gestaltungsweisen dieser Grabform. Erinnerungsgegenstände und Trauerutensilien belegen spielerisch erfinderische Formen symbolischer Kommunikationen mit Toten. Der mehrperspektivische, kulturanalytisch ethnographische Zugang macht alltagsweltliches Wissen zu Sterben und Begraben wie zu Vergehen und Überdauern anschaulich und stellt es dem kulturpessimistischen Gestus des Forschungsstands an die Seite. Anonyme Gräber sind in traditionelle wie in individuell modellierte Praktiken, Materialien und visuelle Medien eingebettet, die sie auf unterschiedlichste Weise bedeuten und wirken lassen. Die Grabform gibt Auskunft über das spannungsvolle Verhältnis zwischen dem Wunsch, lebhaft erinnert oder still vergessen zu sein, und zwischen dem Unvordenklichen individueller Deutungen gegenüber den beharrlichen Setzungen des kulturellen Rahmens. 〈dt.〉
    Kurzfassung: This study is a reading of so-called anonymous burials and connected practices of remembering as a form of individual experience and cultural construction. In modern western culture, private and public sepulchral representations can be considered as gendered and connotated as female. As practices they have become part of the collective memory and are constantly reshaped in the context of social and symbolic orders. The study combines qualitative-empirical methods with the perspectives of cultural and social theories and brings together primary material of heterogeneous origins. Women and men speak about their motivations to be buried in an anonymous grave and about their managing of ways to be remembered which can dispense with the individual signing of a burial place. Close friends and cemetery-workers allow insights in every-day routines of appropriation and arrangements with this kind of burial practice. Objects of remembering and mourning verify symbolic communication with the dead in a playful an inventive manner. The multiperspective and ethnographic approach works out common knowledge about dying and burying, vanishing and outlasting and contrasts it with the pessimistic views of civilisation in the current theoretical research of burial cultures. Anonymous graves are considered as imbedded in traditional and individually modelled practices, materials and visual media. Hence the graves accumulate different effects and meanings. The form of tombs informs about a highly charged relationship between the wish to be kept alive by being remembered or to be quietly forgotten and the unpredictability of individual understanding and persistent determination by the cultural framework. 〈engl.〉

    Kurzfassung: The nineteenth century, a time of far-reaching cultural, political, and socio-economic transformation in Europe, brought about fundamental changes in the role of women. Women achieved this by fighting for their rights in the legal, economic, and political spheres. In the various parts of Europe, this process went forward at different paces and followed different patterns. Most historical research up to now has ignored this diversity, preferring to focus on women's emancipation movements in major western European countries such as Britain and France. The present volume provides a broader context to the movement by including countries, both large and small, from all regions of Europe. Fourteen historians, all of them specialists in women's history, examine the origins and development of women's emancipation movements in their respective areas of expertise. By exploring the cultural and political diversity of nineteenth-century Europe and at the same time pointing out connections to questions explored by conventional scholarship, the essays shed new light on common developments and problems

    Kurzfassung: Die mit der Wiedervereinigung einhergehende Veränderung der wirtschaftlichen und politischen Strukturen wirkte sich vielfältig und nachhaltig auf das Leben der Bevölkerung in Ostdeutschland aus. Auf individueller Ebene wurden dabei Anreize für einen Lebensstilwandel geschaffen. Auf der Grundlage ökonomischer Modelle werden in dieser Arbeit die Wirkungen ökonomischer Anreize auf das individuelle Gesundheitsverhalten vor dem Hintergrund einer wirtschaftlichen Transformation untersucht. Anhand von Daten des Sozioökonomischen Panels (SOEP) wird analysiert, ob sich der Lebensstil ostdeutscher Bürger dem der Bevölkerung im Westen angenähert hat. Es läßt sich aufzeigen, daß auch mehr als zehn Jahre nach der "Wende" der ostdeutsche Transformationsprozeß als nicht abgeschlossen gelten kann.

    Kurzfassung: In the 1930s a band of smart and able young men, some still in their twenties, helped Franklin D. Roosevelt transform an American nation in crisis. They were the junior officers of the New Deal. Thomas G. Corcoran, Benjamin V. Cohen, William O. Douglas, Abe Fortas, and James Rowe helped FDR build the modern Democratic Party into a progressive coalition whose command over power and ideas during the next three decades seemed politically invincible. This is the first book about this group of Rooseveltians and their linkage to Lyndon Johnson's Great Society and the Vietnam War debacle

    Kurzfassung: Prosthetic Memory argues that mass cultural forms such as cinema and television in fact contain the still-unrealized potential for a progressive politics based on empathy for the historical experiences of others. The technologies of mass culture make it possible for anyone, regardless of race, ethnicity, or gender, to share collective memories -- to assimilate as deeply felt personal experiences historical events through which they themselves did not live
