    Kurzfassung: The study describes the process of gradual inclusion of the Jews into the ‚Heimatrecht‘ and citizenship in the Austrian monarchy since the Josephine reforms. The stony path of integration of the Jews into general citizenship which spans centuries and is marked by numerous setbacks allows to shed new light on the act of expatriation of the Austrian Jews during the Nazi regime.The stony path of integration of the Jews into general citizenship spans many centuries and is marked by numerous setbacks. It stretches from special royal protection of the Jews ('Judenregal') via Tolerance or 'Familienstelle' all the way to full citizenship. A description of this development allows to shed new light on the previously dimly lit act of expatriation of the Austrian Jews during the Nazi regime. This was a complex process running in several stages which, although similar to the rest of the German Reich, occurred at a somewhat later stage and already under the sign of flight and expulsion. However, the disenfranchisement and – literally and legally - depersonalization of the Austrian Jews was - so the argument - not just an act of targeted Nazi persecution, but the systematic reversal in rapid motion of the Jews' emancipation which had started at the end of the 18th century. What at first glance appears to have been an abstruse and cluttered convolution of Nazi regulatory activity turns out, on closer analysis, to have been a meticulous reversal of the historical process of 'Jewish emancipation'. Numerous case studies and three major biographical studies towards the end of the book show to what extent the 'Heimatrecht' and citizenship or, by contrast, the fate of statelessness determined the lives and identities of people - far beyond the time of the Austrian monarchy
    Kurzfassung: Vor dem Hintergrund der Entrechtung und Ausbürgerung der österreichischen Juden während der NS-Zeit wird hier der umgekehrte Prozess der stufenweisen Inklusion von Juden in Heimatrecht und Staatsbürgerschaft der österreichischen Monarchie seit den josephinischen Toleranzedikten beschrieben. Dabei zeigt sich nicht nur die Bedeutung der Erlangung der vollen staatsbürgerlichen Rechte für den gesellschaftlichen, ökonomischen und kulturellen Aufstieg der Juden, sondern auch wie sehr Heimatrecht und Staatsbürgerschaft - oder umgekehrt: Staatenlosigkeit - Leben und Identität von Menschen prägten, noch weit über die Monarchie hinaus.Vor dem Hintergrund der Entrechtung und Ausbürgerung der österreichischen Juden und Jüdinnen während der NS-Zeit wird hier der umgekehrte Prozess der stufenweisen Inklusion von Juden in Heimatrecht und Staatsbürgerschaft der österreichischen Monarchie seit den josephinischen Toleranzedikten beschrieben.     Kurzfassung: Das Phänomen der Armut zählt zu den größten Problemen der Großstädte. Die im Fokus dieser Arbeit stehende Armut in zwei Städten kann nur mit einer breiteren Betrachtung der sozialen Ungleichheit, zunehmender Arbeitslosigkeit, der Verschlechterung von Arbeits- und Lebensbedingungen, der Einkommensdisparitäten etc. verstanden werden. Diese Merkmale sind in zunehmendem Maße in Städten der Industrieländer wie Berlin zu spüren. Die wachsende Ausbreitung von Armut in den industrialisierten Gesellschaften sowie in den sogenannten Schwellenländern führte zu einer breiteren Diskussion über das Armutsphänomen auf internationaler Ebene. In der vorliegenden Arbeit wird das Phänomen der Armut in zwei Großstädten untersucht. Mexiko-Stadt und Berlin sind zwei unterschiedliche Städte mit ähnlichen sozialen Problemen. Mexiko-Stadt ist die ,typische’ Stadt in einem Schwellenland, die sich von Städten der Industrieländer durch den Grad der sozialen Ungleichheit, die ausgeprägte Kluft zwischen arm und reich sowohl strukturell als auch funktionell deutlich unterscheidet. Berlin andererseits nähert sich nach der Wiedervereinigung den Problemen anderer großen Metropolen an. In den letzten Jahren traten folgende Phänomene auf: das Entstehen neuer Formen der Armut, eine wachsende Zahl von Sozialhilfeempfängern, eine zunehmende Migrationsbevölkerung ohne wirtschaftliche Perspektiven u.a. Die Studie fasst Untersuchungsergebnisse und Berichte über Armut in Mexiko-Stadt und Berlin zusammen. Es handelt sich nicht um die Erhebung neuer empirischer Daten, sondern um die Selektion, Darstellung und Analyse verschiedener Studien zu Armut in beiden Städten. Die Analyse widmet sich der Armut unter dem Gesichtspunkt gemeinsamer Aspekte, verschiedener Charakteristiken und der jeweiligen Entwicklungstrends in den zwei untersuchten Städten.
    Kurzfassung: The phenomenon of poverty is one of the most serious problems of big cities. The focus of this doctoral thesis is an examination of poverty in two major cities, which must be understood on a broader basis while considering social inequality, rising unemployment, deterioration of working and living conditions, income disparities, etc. These increasing characteristics are notable in cities of developed countries such as Berlin. The growing spread of poverty in industrialized societies and in emerging countries has led to a broader discussion about the phenomenon of poverty at the international level. This doctoral thesis analyzes the phenomenon of poverty in two major cities. Mexico City and Berlin are two different cities with similar social problems. Mexico City is a ,typicalʼ city in a emerging country, which is structurally as well as functionally different from cities of developed countries by the degree of social inequality and the pronounced gap between rich and poor. On the other hand, after its reunification Berlin faces problems of other large cities. In recent years the following phenomena have occurred: the emergence of new forms of poverty, a growing number of welfare recipients, an increasing migrant population without economic prospects etc. This study summarizes investigative findings and reports on poverty in Mexico City and Berlin together. The goal is not to collect new empirical data, but rather to emphasize the selection, presentation and analysis of various studies on poverty in both cities. The analysis focuses on poverty from the standpoint of common aspects, differing characteristics and the respective development trends in the two researched cities.

    Kurzfassung: Seit mehr als zehn Jahren wird in Städten weltweit über die „Kreative Stadt“ debattiert. Doch können Städte Kreativität fördern? Aus einer stadtsoziologischen Perspektive wird zunächst gefragt, welche Möglichkeiten die Stadt zur Entfaltung von Kreativität bietet. Das Verhältnis von Kreativität und Stadt wird als eine Wechselwirkung konzipiert, bei der Städte besondere Gelegenheitsstrukturen und Möglichkeitsräume für die Entstehung und Bewertung von Kreativität darstellen können, die mit Anthony Giddens Strukturationstheorie als Regeln und Ressourcen interpretiert und in den Interaktionen, Beziehungen und Institutionen verortet werden, die mit und zwischen Kreativtätigen in Städten entstehen. Aus einer Governanceperspektive wird dann gefragt, welche sozialen und soziopolitischen Arrangements sich zur Koordination von Kreativität in Städten herausbilden. Im Fokus der empirisch-analytischen Untersuchung stehen horizontale Kooperationsformen wie Netzwerke und Steuerungskreise von kreativwirtschaftlichen und öffentlichen Akteuren deren Ziel die Unterstützung der kreativwirtschaftlichen Branchen ist. Diese Governancestrukturen werden als intermediäre Strukturen betrachtet, die für die Beförderung von Kreativität wesentliche Koordinations- und Vermittlungsleistungen erbringen können. In einem explorativen, multimethodischen, qualitativen Fallstudienansatz werden jeweils zwei Governancearrangements in Berlin und London untersucht. Allen gemeinsam ist, dass sie eher symbolische Funktionen erfüllen, die Kooperationsbereitschaft anzeigen als Abstimmungs- und Aushandlungsprozesse und die Erarbeitung gemeinsamer Problemdefinitionen und Lösungsansätze. Trotz intensiver „Kreative Stadt“ - Diskussionen bildet „Kreativität als Ressource der Stadtentwicklung“ noch kein Deutungsrahmen, mit dem sich politische Mehrheiten für gezielte Strategien in den Städten mobilisieren lassen.
    Kurzfassung: In the last decade, creativity has been promoted as the new key resource of urban development. From a governance perspective, the empirical-analytical inquiry focuses on the question how the ‘creative city’ has been translated into new governance processes and how creativity can be governed in cities. The empirical research draws on four governance arrangements between creative industries stakeholders and public bodies in Berlin and London and is based on an embedded multi-case-study-design with different qualitative methods such as interviews, content analysis and participant observation. These unfolding governance arrangements share objectively several productive features for success and policy innovation in that particular policy field: they combine a diversity of new actors and stakeholders in open and inclusive designs, exhibit passion and endurance of key actors, display a common interest and are matched by supportive, new strategic objectives from the two urban governments. Nevertheless, they also miss several features: a common frame of reference for defining a problem and for integrating disparate knowledge between all stakeholders, no prior cooperation experiences, hardly any financial resources, and eventually, a rather opportunistic and week commitment by urban governments. As in many other cities, the idea of a ‘creative city’ was rather used a ‘rhetorical device’ by urban politics to refashion existing policies instead of appropriate policy-making that supports cultural production in its multifaceted ways.

    Kurzfassung: Die vorliegende Dissertation untersucht theoretisch und empirisch gesundheitliche Selektionsprozesse auf dem deutschen Arbeitsmarkt und wie diese durch soziale Kontextfaktoren beeinflusst werden. Aufbauend auf der Humankaiptaltheorie werden eine reihe von Hypothesen aufgestellt über den kausalen Effekt der subjektiven Gesundheit und der krankheitsbedingten Fehltage auf den Jobstatus. Die Humankapitaltheorie wird so erweitert, dass der Effekt der Gesundheit mit dem Grad der Benachteiligung einer Person und dem Grad der sozialen Schließung des Jobs variieren kann. Konkret werden die moderierenden Einflüsse des Geschlechts und des öffentlichen versus privaten Sektors sowie der Geschlechteranteile im Beruf untersucht. Die empirische Analysen werden auf Basis des Sozio-oekonomischen Panels (SOEP) durchgeführt. Verschiedene Methoden werden angewandt, um kausale Effekte der subjektiven Gesundheit auf den Jobstatus zu schätzen. Weiterhin wird eine Dekomposition der gesamten gesundheitlichen Ungleichheit in zeit-konstante und zeit-variante Faktoren und auf gesundheitlicher Selektion basierende Prozesse durchgeführt. Die Ergebnisse zeigen, dass gesundheitliche Selektion für Frauen im privaten Sektor gefunden werden kann, nicht aber im öffentlichen Sektor und auch nicht für Männer. Für krankheitsbedingte Fehltage kann ein kausaler Effekt für Männer im privaten Sektor gefunden werden, nicht aber im öffentlichen Sektor oder für Frauen. Unter den gewählten Bedingungen der Studie, sind gesundheitliche Selektionsprozesse daher eher in offenen Positionen und für Gruppen, die einer Benachteiligung gegenüber stehen zu finden.
    Kurzfassung: In this PhD-thesis the social context of health selection processes on the German labor market are investigated theoretically and empirically. Based on human capital theory a number of hypotheses about the causal effect of subjective health and sickness absence on job status are derived. The theory is modified to allow the effect of health to vary with the degree of disadvantage a person faces and the degree of social closure of the job. In concrete terms, the moderating effect of gender and public versus private sector are investigated, as well as the occupational gender composition. The empirical analyses are based on the Socio-economic panel study (SOEP) using different methods to estimate causal effects of subjective health on subsequent job status. A decomposition of overall health inequalities into effects attributable to time-constant, time-varying confounders and into health selection processes is presented. The results show that health selection is present for women in the private sector, but not for men nor in the public sector. Sickness absence shows the strongest effects for men in the private sector, but not for women nor in the public sector. For the chosen setting, health selection processes are strongest in open positions and for groups that are disadvantaged.

    Kurzfassung: In dieser Arbeit geht es um die Frage nach dem Zusammenhang von beruflicher Position und anderen Einflussfaktoren auf die Väteridentität. Dabei werden in einer quantitativen Auswertung neben soziostrukturellen Variablen, wie Einkommen und beruflicher Verantwortungsgrad auch Einstellungen und Präferenzen der Väter im Hinblick auf ihre Väteridentität analysiert. Es kann gezeigt werden, dass der Beruf nur einen geringen Teil des Einflusses auf die Väteridentität darstellt und vielmehr Faktoren wie die Partnerin oder bestimmte Einstellungen ihre väterliche Identität ebenso prägen. Dies bedeutet einerseits, dass sich die Sozialisation von Vätern hinsichtlich ihrer Identität nur in einem Mehrebenenmodell wirklich voll erfassen lässt. Andererseits werden das Wohlbefinden und die subjektive Einstellung von Vätern, neben den soziostrukturellen Faktoren, als Einflussfaktoren auch im familienpolitischen Zusammenhang relevant. Die Väteridentität wird hier anhand des Konstanzer Väterinstruments getestet und misst sieben Faktoren: Belastung, Bereicherung, Geduld, Zeit/Beziehung, Durchsetzen und Freilassen. Die Datengrundlage besteht aus einer eigenen quantitativen Erhebung von 166 Vätern.
    Kurzfassung: The current discussion about „new fathers“ assumes a significant correlation between work context and father engagement. But exactly which factors influence paternal identity and a distinct interpretation of fatherhood? Besides social structural variables like position within the labor market or income, this dissertation measures additional influencing variables like fathers’ preferences and partnership variables on father identity. The concept of father identity is based on seven subjective dimensions: mental strain, gain, patience, time/relationship, ability to assert oneself and releasability. Evaluating this concept of paternal identity shows that factors related to employment have less influence on fathers’ identities as may expected. Furthermore, this study shows that fathers’ identity is influenced by a mixture of socio-structural and non-sociostructural factors alike. These have to be measured in a multidimensional model. Data comes from self-administered questionnaires among 166 fathers. The evaluation of the concept of paternal identity was done by quantitative bivariate and multivariate statistical methods.

    Kurzfassung: Anerkennung wird heute sozialphilosophisch diskutiert. Dabei wird übersehen, sie hat auch eine politisch-philosophische Geschichte und darin mehrere Wandlungen durchlebt. Der Auftakt liegt in der politischen Philosophie des 19. Jahrhunderts. Die erste Wandlung durchläuft die Diskussion im Übergang von Hegels Realphilosophie zur Phänomenologie des Geistes im Jahr 1807. Schlagartig stand nicht mehr der Topos der Anerkennung im Zentrum der Diskussion, sondern das Herr-Knecht-Verhältnis. Die ökonomisch-philosophische Wendung in den unversöhnlichen Gegensatz von Kapital und Arbeit dominiert die Herr-Knecht-Diskussion seit den 1840er Jahren bis zur Veröffentlichung der Jenaer Frühschriften Hegels. Die Dissertation eröffnet mit einem Forschungsstand der wichtigsten seit 1931 in Deutschland veröffentlichten Diskussionsbeiträge. Als Resultat wird die Debatte aus der Sozialphilosophie in die politische Philosophie getragen. Nicht der sozialphilosophische Kampf um Anerkennung, sondern die politisch-philosophische Bewegung der Anerkennung ist der methodische Leitfaden durch die letzten zwei Jahrhunderte. Sie ist ein konflikttheoretisches Mehrstufenmodell, das zum Untersuchungsinstrument für vier prototypische Denker_innen von Demokratisierungs- und Gleichstellungsbewegungen wird. G.W.F. Hegel, Karl Marx, Frantz Fanon und Simone de Beauvoir sind bis heute Kronzeug_innen, wenn es um Rechtsbegründung, eine klassenlose Gesellschaft und eine Menschheit geht, in der weder Hautfarbe noch Geschlecht bestimmend für soziale und politische Stellung sind. Sie haben ihre politische Philosophie mit dem Denken einer Bewegung der Anerkennung konzipiert. Im Ausblick wird die Bewegung als detailreiches Denkwerkzeug politischer Analyse und Konzeptbildung beschrieben. Die Arbeit ist für politische Theoretiker_innen und Praktiker_innen, die sich ohne große Vorkenntnisse die Anerkennungsdiskussion als wichtigen Quellcode der europäischen politischen Philosophie gewinnbringend aneignen wollen.
    Kurzfassung: Recognition is discussed today predominantly in social philosophy. But it also has a political-philosophical history and it is going through several changes. The prelude is the political philosophy of the 19th century. The first conversion passes through the discussion in the transition from Hegel''s Realphilosophie (1806) to his Phenomenology of Spirit in 1807. Abruptly was no longer the topos of recognition in the center of the discussion, but the master-servant relationship. The economic- philosophical turn in the irreconcilable opposition between capital and labor dominates the master-servant discussion since the 1840s until the publication of the Jena Hegel''s early writings. In practical politics it dominated until the collapse of the Soviet Union. The thesis begins with a state of the most important research published in Germany since 1931 discussion posts. As a result, the debate is carried out of the social philosophy in political philosophy. Not the socio-philosophical struggle for recognition, but the political and philosophical movement of recognition is the methodological guide through the last two centuries. It is a conflict-theoretical multi-stage model, which is here the investigation instrument for four prototypical thinkers of democratization and equality movements. G.W.F. Hegel, Karl Marx, Frantz Fanon and Simone de Beauvoir are still key witnesses, when it comes to legal reasoning, a classless society and humanity in which neither color nor sex are decisive for social and political position. Hegel, Marx, Fanon and de Beauvoir have designed their political philosophy with the thought of a movement of recognition. In the outlook, the movement is described as a highly detailed political analysis tool for thinking and concept formation. The work is for political theorists and practicians without much prior knowledge who want to acquire the recognition discussion profitable. It is one of the most important sources of European political philosophy.

    Kurzfassung: This book looks at sovereignty as a particular form of power and politics. It shows that the fate of bodies in the transition from life to death can provide a key to understanding fundamental ways in which sovereignty is claimed and performed. The contributions analyse (post-)conflict as well as non-conflict contexts, which too often are studied in isolation from one another. Focusing on contemporary issues rather than the equally important historical dimensions, they all grapple with the questions of who governs the dead bodies, how, why and with what effects. The book analyses how dead bodies are placed and dealt with in spaces between competing, overlapping and nested sovereign orders, under normal as well as exceptional conditions. It looks at contributions that draw on psychoanalysis, critical theory, the structuralist-functionalist anthropology of burial rituals and recent ideas of agency and materiality. The book first explains the efforts of states to contain and separate out dead bodies in particular sites. It explores the ways in which such efforts of containment are negotiated and contested in struggles between different entities that claim the dead bodies.     Kurzfassung: Cultural Science introduces a new way of thinking about culture. Adopting an evolutionary and systems approach, the authors argue that culture is the population-wide source of newness and innovation; it faces the future, not the past. Its chief characteristic is the formation of groups or 'demes' (organised and productive subpopulation; 'demos'). Demes are the means for creating, distributing and growing knowledge. However, such groups are competitive and knowledge-systems are adversarial. Starting from a rereading of Darwinian evolutionary theory, the book utilises multidisciplinary resources: Raymond Williams's 'culture is ordinary' approach; evolutionary science (e.g. Mark Pagel and Herbert Gintis); semiotics (Yuri Lotman); and economic theory (from Schumpeter to McCloskey). Successive chapters argue that: -Culture and knowledge need to be understood from an externalist ('linked brains') perspective, rather than through the lens of individual behaviour; -Demes are created by culture, especially storytelling, which in turn constitutes both politics and economics; -The clash of systems -- including demes -- is productive of newness, meaningfulness and successful reproduction of culture; -Contemporary urban culture and citizenship can best be explained by investigating how culture is used, and how newness and innovation emerge from unstable and contested boundaries between different meaning systems; -The evolution of culture is a process of technologically enabled 'demic concentration' of knowledge, across overlapping meaning-systems or semiospheres; a process where the number of demes accessible to any individual has increased at an accelerating rate, resulting in new problems of scale and coordination for cultural science to address. The book argues for interdisciplinary 'consilience', linking evolutionary and complexity theory in the natural sciences, economics and anthropology in the social sciences, and cultural, communication and media studies in the humanities and creative arts. It describes what is needed for a new 'modern synthesis' for the cultural sciences. It combines analytical and historical methods, to provide a framework for a general reconceptualisation of the theory of culture - one that is focused not on its political or customary aspects but rather its evolutionary significance as a generator of newness and innovation.

The state has widely touted tourism for its potential to bring wealth and modernity to rural ethnic minority communities, but the policies underlying the development of tourism obscure some complicated realities. In tourism, after all, one person's leisure is another person's labor. A Landscape of Travel investigates the contested meanings and unintended consequences of tourism for those people whose lives and livelihoods are most at stake in China's rural ethnic tourism industry: the residents of village destinations. Drawing on ethnographic research conducted in Pingan (a Zhuang village in Guangxi) and Upper Jidao (a Miao village in Guizhou), Jenny Chio analyzes the myriad challenges and possibilities confronted by villagers who are called upon to do the work of tourism. She addresses the shifting significance of migration and rural mobility, the visual politics of tourist photography, and the effects of touristic desires for "exotic difference" on village social relations. In this way, Chio illuminates the contemporary regimes of labor and leisure and the changing imagination of what it means to be rural, ethnic, and modern in China today. Jenny Chio is assistant professor of anthropology and associated faculty in film and media studies at Emory University.     Kurzfassung: This book provides a view of literary life under the Nazis, highlighting the ambiguities, rivalries and conflicts that determined the cultural climate of that period and beyond. Focusing on a group of writers – in particular, Hans Grimm, Erwin Guido Kolbenheyer, Wilhelm Schäfer, Emil Strauß, Börries Freiherr von Münchhausen and Rudolf Binding – it examines the continuities in völkisch-nationalist thought in Germany from c. 1890 into the post-war period and the ways in which völkisch-nationalists identified themselves in opposition to four successive German regimes: the Kaiserreich, the Weimar Republic, the Third Reich and the Federal Republic. Although their work predated Hitler’s National Socialist movement, their contribution to preparing the cultural climate for the rise of Nazism ensured them continued prominence in the Third Reich. Those who survived into the post-war era continued to represent the völkisch-nationalist worldview in the West German public sphere, opposing both the Soviet and liberal-democratic models for Germany’s future. While not uncontroversial, they were able to achieve significant publishing success, suggesting that a demand existed for their works among the German public, stimulating debate about the nature of the recent past and its effect on Germany’s cultural and political identity and position in the world

    Kurzfassung: Considerable socio-political change has re-configured the discursive space once occupied by ‘utopia’. Within the cultures of late capitalism and the organisational matrices of bio-political administration, that space is no longer animated by images of idealised states that are yet to come, or by a sense of simple failure in the production of those same states. Rather, it is overdetermined by a condition of differentiation in the representation of reality. The origins of that differentiation of representation appear to lie deep within the modernist project. In the Place of Utopia explores how that condition of representation might be animated anew by the discursive circuits through which modernity has come to operate, so as to enliven the ability of transformative ideas to lever change from within a range of organic crises current to the world system: the financialisation of global capitalism; the subsumption of worker subjectivities to the logic of capital; the broadening of the metabolic rift through industrial-capitalism.     Kurzfassung: The standing of French Muslims is undercut by a predominant and persistent elite public discourse that frames Muslims as failed and incomplete French citizens. This situation fosters the very separations, exclusions, and hierarchies it claims to deplore as Muslims face discrimination in education, housing, and employment. In Constructing Muslims in France, Jennifer Fredette provides a deft empirical analysis to show the political diversity and complicated identity politics of this relatively new population. She examines the public identity of French Muslims and evaluates images in popular media to show how stereotyped notions of racial and religious differences pervade French public discourse. While rights may be a sine qua non for fighting legal and political inequality, Fredette shows that additional tools such as media access are needed to combat social inequality, particularly when it comes in the form of unfavorable discursive frames and public disrespect. Presenting the conflicting views of French national identity, Fredette shows how Muslims strive to gain recognition of their diverse views and backgrounds and find full equality as French citizens. What impact will religion have on the European secular world and its regulation? How do social and economic transitions on a transnational scale challenge ethnic and religious identifications? These questions are at the very heart of the debate on multiculturalism in present-day Europe and are addressed by the authors in this book. Through the lens of post-migrant societies, manifestations of identity appear in pluralized, fragmented, and deterritorialized forms. This new European multiculturalism calls into question the nature of boundaries between various ethnic-religious groups, as well as the demarcation lines within ethnic-religious communities. Although the contributions in this volume focus on Islam, ample attention is also paid to Christianity, Judaism, and Hinduism. The authors present empirical data from cases in Turkey, Germany, France, Spain, the United Kingdom, Poland, Norway, Sweden, and Belgium, and sharpen the perspectives on the religious-ethnic manifestations of identity in the transnational context of 21st-century Europe

    Kurzfassung: "Combining the tools of political, social, cultural, and intellectual history, Consumption and Violence : Radical Protest in Cold-War West Germany explores strategies of legitimization developed by advocates of militant resistance to certain manifestations of consumer capitalism. The book contributes to a more sober evaluation of West German protest movements, not just terrorism, as it refrains from emotional and moral judgments, but takes the protesters' approaches seriously, which, regarding consumer society, had a rational core. Political violence is not presented as the result of individual shortcomings, but emerges in relation to major societal changes, i.e., the unprecedented growth of consumption. This new perspective sheds important light on violence and radical protest in post-war Germany, as previous books have failed to examine to what extent these forms of resistance should be regarded as reactions to changing regimes of provision. Continuing the recently growing interest in the interdependence of countercultures and consumer society, the focus on violence gives the argument a unique twist, making the book thought-provoking and engaging

    Kurzfassung: This publication will fill a significant gap in the literature on quality of life and subjective wellbeing by addressing the gender dimensions of people's lived experience and emphasizing how gender relationships differentially impact on women's and girls' as well as men's and boys' subjective wellbeing across the lifespan. Sex-disaggregation of data on objective conditions of quality of life is now routinely undertaken in many countries of the world. However, despite the burgeoning of objective data on sex differences in life conditions across the world, very little gender analysis is carried out to explain fully such difference and there is still a serious dearth of data on gender differences in subjective experiences of quality of life and wellbeing. This publication will assist researchers, teachers, service providers and policy makers in filling some of the gaps in currently available literature on the nexus between age and gender in producing differential experiences of subjective wellbeing. The book brings together research which compares female's and male's subjective experiences of wellbeing at various life stages from a variety of countries and regions, particularly focusing on women's subjective wellbeing.

    Kurzfassung: "Rückkehr unerwünscht" (Return Undesired) is the first systematic study on deportation in the Habsburg empire. The measures taken against protestants, deviants and losers in the modernisation process are both delineated in detail and in their european contexts.Concerning the historiography of the Habsburg empire this volume is breaking new ground in respect of deportation. Whereas scholars in the field of Contemporary History tend to view them as merely epiphenomena of totalitarianism, a more closer reconstruction of its "protohistory" reveals it as an instrument of punishment, of demonstration of power and of population policies that were widely and in a rather "modern" way used in the Habsburg Monarchy as early as in the 18th century.The first chapters are focusing on a synoptic view of the major European powers of the Early Modern Period (Portugal, France, Spain, Russia, the Netherlands) and their attitudes towards deportation as well as on the sürgün-method in the Ottoman empire. The following chapters are dealing with all hitherto known deportations in the Habsburg realm of the Early Modern Era as well as with the rekindled debate on it around 1900. The notion that a country without colonies would be uninterested in deportations as well, is untenable. On the contrary, the Habsburg empire with its measures taken against protestants, deviants and losers in the modernisation process was just numerically ranking in a significant position. The study is grounded on intense archival research, which brought forth a multitude of essential documents that were hitherto unknown or looked over. Eight case studies comprise different regions of the empire and are situated amongst most diverse social strata. All in all they are intended to serve as major building blocks for a "History of Violence in the Habsburg Empire" yet to be written

    Kurzfassung: "Envisioning Socialism examines television and the power it exercised to define the East Germans' view of socialism during the first decades of the German Democratic Republic. In the first book in English to examine this topic, Heather L. Gumbert traces how television became a medium prized for its communicative and entertainment value. She explores the difficulties GDR authorities had defining and executing a clear vision of the society they hoped to establish, and she explains how television helped to stabilize GDR society in a way that ultimately worked against the utopian vision the authorities thought they were cultivating. Gumbert challenges those who would dismiss East German television as a tool of repression that couldn't compete with the West or capture the imagination of East Germans. Instead, she shows how, by the early 1960s, television was a model of the kind of socialist realist art that could appeal to authorities and audiences. Ultimately, this socialist vision was overcome by the challenges that the international market in media products and technologies posed to nation-building in the postwar period. A history of ideas and perceptions examining both real and mediated historical conditions, Envisioning Socialism considers television as a technology, an institution, and a medium of social relations and cultural knowledge.     Kurzfassung: "In 2001 the Chinese government announced that the precise location of Shangrila--a place that previously had existed only in fiction--had been identified in Zhongdian County, Yunnan. Since then, Sino-Tibetan borderlands in Yunnan, Sichuan, Gansu, Qinghai, and the Tibet Autonomous Region have been the sites of numerous state projects of tourism development and nature conservation, which have in turn attracted throngs of backpackers, environmentalists, and entrepreneurs who seek to experience, protect, and profit from the region's landscapes. Mapping Shangrila advances a view of landscapes as media of governance, representation, and resistance, examining how they are reshaping cultural economies, political ecologies of resource use, subjectivities, and interethnic relations. Chapters illuminate topics such as the role of Han and Tibetan literary representations of border landscapes in the formation of ethnic identities; the remaking of Chinese national geographic imaginaries through tourism in the Yading Nature Reserve; the role of The Nature Conservancy and other transnational environmental organizations in struggles over culture and environmental governance; the way in which matsutake mushroom and caterpillar fungus commodity chains are reshaping montane landscapes; and contestations over the changing roles of mountain deities and their mediums as both interact with increasingly intensive nature conservation and state-sponsored capitalism.     Kurzfassung: Sex Scene suggests that what we have come to understand as the sexual revolution of the late 1960s and early 1970s was actually a media revolution. In lively essays, the contributors examine a range of mass media-film and television, recorded sound, and publishing-that provide evidence of the circulation of sex in the public sphere, from the mainstream to the fringe. They discuss art films such as I am Curious (Yellow), mainstream movies including Midnight Cowboy, sexploitation films such as Mantis in Lace, the emergence of erotic film festivals and of gay pornography, the use of multimedia in sex education, and the sexual innuendo of The Love Boat. Scholars of cultural studies, history, and media studies, the contributors bring shared concerns to their diverse topics. They highlight the increasingly fluid divide between public and private, the rise of consumer and therapeutic cultures, and the relationship between identity politics and individual rights. The provocative surveys and case studies in this nuanced cultural history reframe the "sexual revolution" as the mass sexualization of our mediated world.Contributors. Innerhalb der herzustellenden "Volksgemeinschaft" diente "Arbeit" als zentrales Praxisfeld von Inklusion der "Volksgenossinnen und Volksgenossen". In den Konzentrationslagern der Vorkriegszeit bildete Arbeit das entscheidende Mittel der "Erziehung", um Häftlinge in "Volksgenossen" zu verwandeln. Im Krieg wurde Zwangsarbeit zur entscheidenden Ressource für die Fortführung der Rüstungsproduktion. Und schließlich entschied "Arbeitsfähigkeit" über Leben und Tod von Juden, Roma und Sinti, sowjetischen Kriegsgefangenen, KZ-Häftlingen, Zwangsarbeitern. Dieser Vielschichtigkeit von Arbeit als sozialer, politischer, kultureller Praxis im Nationalsozialismus nähern sich die Beiträge des Bandes aus unterschiedlichen Perspektiven an, um Kontinuitäten und Differenzen von "Arbeit im Nationalsozialismus" kenntlich zu machen. In order to think theoretically about our global age it is important to understand how the global has been conceived historically. 'Eurafrica' was an intellectual endeavor and political project that from the 1920s saw Europe's future survival - its continued role in history - as completely bound up with Europe's successful merger with Africa. In its time the concept of Eurafrica was tremendously influential in the process of European integration. Today the project is largely forgotten, yet the idea continues to influence EU policy towards its African 'partner'. The book will recover a critical conception of the nexus between Europe and Africa - a relationship of significance across the humanities and social sciences.     Kurzfassung: Excavated in 2009, An Son, Long An Province, southern Vietnam has been dated to the second millennium BC, with evidence for neolithic occupation and burials. Very little is known about the neolithic period in southern Vietnam, and the routes and chronology for the appearance of cultivation, domestic animals, and ceramic and lithic technologies associated with sedentary settlements in mainland Southeast Asia are still debated. The ways in which the ceramic material culture at An Son conforms to the wider neolithic expression observed in Southeast Asia is investigated, and local and regional innovations are identified. The An Son ceramic assemblage is discussed in great detail to characterise the neolithic occupation, while considering the nature of craft production, manufacturing methods and the transference of traditions. Contextualising the neolithic in southern Vietnam is conducted through a comparative study of material culture between An Son and the sites of Bé̂n?ò, Bình Đa, Cù Lao Rùa, Cái Vạn, Cà̂u Sá̆t, Đa Kai, Đình Ông, Lộc Giang, Rạch Lá, Rạch Núi and Suó̂i Linh, all in southern Vietnam. Another analysis is presented to contextualise An Son in the wider neolithic landscape of mainland Southeast Asia, between An Son and Ban Non Wat, early Ban Lum Khao, early Ban Chiang, early Non Nok Tha, Khok Charoen, Tha Kae, Khok Phanom Di, Nong Nor (phase 1), Samrong Sen, Laang Spean, Krek, Bàu Tró, Mán Bạc and Xóm Rè̂n. The aspects of material culture at An Son that appear to have ancestral links are considered in this research as well as local interaction spheres

    Kurzfassung: "OREA 1 presents the scientific results of the international symposium Western Anatolia before Troy--Proto-Urbanisation in the 4th Millennium BC? The sparse archaeological data published for the 5th and 4th millennia BC and the archaeological picture of western Anatolia, fundamentally changed in the last decades, needed to bring together specialists of western Turkey and the neighbouring regions to discuss new data in the light of socio-cultural processes in the period before Troy. Furthermore, following the results of the ERC research group (ERC project Prehistoric Anatolia), it appeared high time to focus on this period as it had been frequently neglected in the recent dynamic prehistoric research in western Turkey. The intermediate millennia between the archaeological focus on the Neolithic (and early Chalcolithic) of the 7th and 6th millennia BC with ground-breaking results and publications on the one hand and traditional research on the Early Bronze Age in the 3rd millennium BC with new input from important key sites on the other hand remained more or less neglected.     Kurzfassung: The Arab spring, protest movements in the EU, Russia, Turkey or elsewhere, are often labeled as twitter-revolutions. A crucial role is attributed to the new media, coverage of events abroad and ensuing mutual reactions. With the dissemination of print, revolts in early-modern times faced the challenge of a similar media-revolution. This influenced the very face of the events that could become full-fledged propaganda wars once the insurgents had won access to the printing press. But it also had an impact on revolt-narratives. Governments severely persecuted dissident views in such delicate issues as revolts. Observers abroad had no such divided loyalties and were freer to reflect upon the events. Therefore, the book focuses mainly on representations of revolts across borders
