Abstract: This open access textbook introduces and defines digital humanism from a diverse range of disciplines. Following the 2019 Vienna Manifesto, the book calls for a digital humanism that describes, analyzes, and, most importantly, influences the complex interplay of technology and humankind, for a better society and life, fully respecting universal human rights. The book is organized in three parts: Part I “Background” provides the multidisciplinary background needed to understand digital humanism in its philosophical, cultural, technological, historical, social, and economic dimensions. The goal is to present the necessary knowledge upon which an effective interdisciplinary discourse on digital humanism can be founded. Part II “Digital Humanism – a System’s View” focuses on an in-depth presentation and discussion of the main digital humanism concerns arising in current digital systems. The goal of this part is to make readers aware and sensitive to these issues, including e.g. the control and autonomy of AI systems, privacy and security, and the role of governance. Part III “Critical and Societal Issues of Digital Systems” delves into critical societal issues raised by advances of digital technologies. While the public debate in the past has often focused on them separately, especially when they became visible through sensational events the aim here is to shed light on the entire landscape and show their interconnected relationships. This includes issues such as AI and ethics, fairness and bias, privacy and surveillance, platform power and democracy. This textbook is intended for students, teachers, and policy makers interested in digital humanism. It is designed for stand-alone and for complementary courses in computer science, or curricula in science, engineering, humanities and social sciences. Each chapter includes questions for students and an annotated reading list to dive deeper into the associated chapter material. The book aims to provide readers with as wide an exposure as possible to digital advances and their consequences for humanity. It includes constructive ideas and approaches that seek to ensure that our collective digital future is determined through human agency

Abstract: The Routledge Handbook of Ecomedia Studies gathers leading work by critical scholars in this burgeoning field. Redressing the lack of environmental perspectives in the study of media, ecomedia studies asserts that media are in and about the environment, and environments are socially and materially mediated. The book gives form to this new area of study and brings together diverse scholarly contributions to explore and give definition to the field. The Handbook highlights five critical areas of ecomedia scholarship: ecomedia theory, ecomateriality, political ecology, ecocultures, and eco-affects. Within these areas, authors navigate a range of different topics including infrastructures, supply and manufacturing chains, energy, e-waste, labor, ecofeminism, African and Indigenous ecomedia, environmental justice, environmental media governance, ecopolitical satire, and digital ecologies. The result is a holistic volume that provides an in-depth and comprehensive overview of the current state of the field, as well as future developments. This volume will be an essential resource for students, educators, and scholars of media studies, cultural studies, film, environmental communication, political ecology, science and technology studies, and the environmental humanities.

Abstract: Computers are everywhere --- most obviously in our laptops and smartphones, but also our cars, televisions, microwave ovens, alarm clocks, robot vacuum cleaners, and other smart appliances. Have you ever wondered what goes on inside these devices to make our lives easier but occasionally more infuriating? For more than 20 years, readers have delighted in Charles Petzolds illuminating story of the secret inner life of computers, and now he has revised it for this new age of computing. Cleverly illustrated and easy to understand, this is the book that cracks the mystery. Youll discover what fl ashlights, black cats, seesaws, and the ride of Paul Revere can teach you about computing --- and how human ingenuity and our compulsion to communicate have shaped every electronic device we use. This new expanded edition explores more deeply the bit-by-bit, gate-by-gate construction of the heart of every smart device the central processing unit that combines the simplest of basic operations to perform the most complex of feats. Along with new chapters, Petzold has created a new website, CodeHiddenLanguage.com, that uses animated interactive graphics to make computers even easier to comprehend. From the simple ticking of clocks to the worldwide hum of the internet, Code reveals the essence of the digital revolution.

Abstract: "Based on the bestselling A Complaint Is a Gift (over 275,000 copies sold), this accompanying workbook offers actionable tools that help individuals and organizations transform even the most extreme complaints into gifts that drive their business forward. A Complaint Is a Gift introduced the revolutionary notion that customer complaints are not annoyances to be dodged, denied, or buried but are instead valuable pieces of feedback-not to mention your best bargain in market research. Complaints provide a feedback mechanism that can help organizations rapidly and inexpensively strengthen products, service style, and market focus. Most importantly, complaints that are well received create customer loyalty. Built to be interactive and immersive, the workbook teaches a set of practices, approaches, and tools that anyone can use to navigate fraught customer-facing interactions. It allows readers to practice Janelle Barlow's updated, more efficient three-step formula and enables employees to handle complaints with increased emotional resilience rather than taking them as personal attacks. A Complaint Is a Gift Workbook is packed with the necessary tools to view and treat complaints as a source of innovative ideas that can transform your business"--

As a lifelong communication coach, Michelle Gladieux has discovered the four sneaky psychological obstacles that can keep you from becoming an effective communicator: Hiding-Fearing your low self-confidence will expose your supposed weaknesses; Defining-Putting too much stock into your assumptions and being quick to judge right and wrong; Rationalizing-Using "being realistic" to shield yourself from taking chances, engaging in conflict, or doing other scary but potentially rewarding actions; Settling-Stopping at "good enough" instead of pushing for something better. What all these challenges have in common is they require taking risks-to reveal yourself, to question your beliefs, to take a leap of faith, or to move out of your comfort zone. As a response, each chapter includes a Pro Move, or a best practice, and an exercise designed to help you overcome your fears and become a powerful communicator. Courageous communication requires self-knowledge, practice, and a fierce desire to continually improve; this book is like having an expert coach along with you for every step of the journey"--

Abstract: ". The book takes its title from a simple insight: we would never run a machine at such a pace, duration, and rhythm such that it broke all of the time?so why do we do exact that to our human workers? The reality is, this model doesn?t work for anyone. Organizations have dumped millions into consulting from folks like myself, with incremental results; workers have raged from picket lines to Reddit with stop-and-start progress at best. By assuming the interests of these two groups are not at cross purposes ? and being willing to aim the analytical laser in some unexpected places ? You Wouldn?t Run a Machine This Way provides a roadmap to better work that generates wins for organizations and employees alike. You Wouldn?t Run a Machine This Way explores an array of ways we?ve made work downright inhuman - in a way that, ironically, actually stifles the growth and profitability of organizations. Foundational practices we take for granted ? for instance, trying to improve the performance of the individual human being - actually produce worse results than doing nothing at all. And, similar to the old joke about teaching a pig to dance being both a waste of your time and an annoyance for the pig, these efforts both waste corporate money and time and ? critically - drive human workers to exhaustion, burnout, and even death. To build a better model of work, You Wouldn?t Run a Machine This Way argues, we have to look in some unexpected places. Your people strategy? It?s being built by geopolitics and local jurisprudence, not your HR team; immigration, migration, and incarceration have a seismic impact on workforces that companies serially underestimate"--

To the buyer, it all sounds like noise. For these reasons, the decades of research VantagePoint Performance has been conducting on high-performing sales managers and high-performing salespeople is more relevant today than it ever has been. VP recently analyzed the data they've been collecting on over 10,000 sellers and greater than 1,600 sales managers. What became glaringly obvious is that salespeople who could leverage all of their previous methodology trainings to determine the best approach are the ones who accomplish their growth targets. Abstract: Unreal Engine is here to stay! Since the launch of the first edition of this book, based on the Unreal Engine 5 technology, real-time rendering has only grown in popularity. The demand for expertise in this area has grown exponentially across various fields over the last few years, and Unreal Engine 5 builds upon that foundation and continues to push the boundaries of what is achievable in an interactive format. Against this backdrop, the second edition of this book takes a leap forward and explores the new opportunities offered by the latest version of the engine, including Lumen, ray tracing, and Nanite. The book also revisits previously covered techniques and updates them to current standards, shining new light on topics such as the PBR workflow and the different lighting solutions that were present in the first edition. Throughout the chapters, you'll be able to focus on two key principles that you need to consider when dealing with real-time graphics: optimization and efficiency. By the end of this book, you'll have explored the many rendering possibilities that Unreal Engine 5 has to offer to become the master of your own creations!

Abstract: "Economies run on either win-win or win-lose deals... And the best kind of economy runs on win-win deals. Win-win deals are winners because they are always voluntary. So they allow people to decide for themselves what they want. Then, through the information carried in market-set prices, these deals help businesses and individuals maximize their satisfaction. The baker does not light his oven at four in the morning for the love of baking. Neither does the bakery patron share his wages with the baker out of compassion. Rather, both are engaged in a win-win deal of mutual benefit and voluntary exchange. Win-lose deals are different. In a win-lose deal, one side forces the deal on the other side. And only one side profits. In win-lose deals, one side reaps where someone else has sown... one side takes the profit where someone else has taken the risk... one side enjoys capital it never saved and drinks it never poured. Some people do their win-lose deals outside the law -- petty stick-up men and counterfeiters. More of them use the law itself -- the administrative, regulatory, and crony apparatus of government -- to get what they're after. Capitalism favors win-win deals. Socialism, on the other hand, favors the win-lose variety"--

Abstract: "This illustrated nonfiction anthology is a collection of stories and recipes about antiracism from 21 North American children's authors."--
Abstract: "What if talking about racism was as easy as baking a cake, frying plantains or cooking rice? The Antiracist Kitchen: 21 Stories (and Recipes) is a celebration of food, family, activism and resistance in the face of racism. In this anthology featuring stories and recipes from 21 diverse and award-winning North American children's authors, the authors share the role of food in their lives and how it has helped fight discrimination, reclaim culture and celebrate people with different backgrounds. They bring personal and sometimes difficult experiences growing up as racialized people. Chopped, seared, marinated and stewed, The Antiracist Kitchen highlights the power of sitting down to share a meal and how that simple act can help bring us all together." --
