    Abstract: "Queering Desire" explores, with unprecedented interdisciplinary scope, contemporary configurations of lesbian, bi, queer women's and non-binary people's experiences of identity and desire. Within queer studies, explorations of desire, longing and eroticism have often neglected AFAB, transfeminine and non-binary people's experiences. Through twenty-five newly commissioned chapters, a diverse range of authors, from early career researchers to established scholars, stage conversations at the cutting edge of sexuality studies. Queering Desire advances our understanding of contemporary lesbian and queer desire from an inclusive perspective that is supportive of trans and non-binary identities.     Abstract: Wie stellen Menschen die Ereignisse in ihrer Lebensgeschichte und der Geschichte ihrer Familie(n) dar, wenn sie davon erzählen? Wie stehen das Erzählen und das Erleben in der Gegenwart im Zusammenhang mit dem Erleben und dem Erzählen in der Vergangenheit? Dieses Buch beantwortet diese Fragen mit einer theoretisch-empirischen Untersuchung der gegenseitigen Wechselwirkungen von Erinnern, Erleben und der Präsentation des Erlebten zu verschiedenen Zeitpunkten eines Lebensverlaufs und der damit zusammenhängenden Verläufe der Kollektivgeschichten. Die Autorin greift in dieser mittlerweile klassischen Studie vor allem Ansätze der Phänomenologie sowie der Gestalttheorie auf – und in der Zeit seit der 1.     Abstract: Running from Bondage tells the compelling stories of enslaved women, who comprised one-third of all runaways, and the ways in which they fled or attempted to flee bondage during and after the Revolutionary War. Karen Cook Bell's enlightening and original contribution to the study of slave resistance in eighteenth-century America explores the individual and collective lives of these women and girls of diverse circumstances, while also providing details about what led them to escape. She demonstrates that there were in fact two wars being waged during the Revolutionary Era: a political revolution for independence from Great Britain and a social revolution for emancipation and equality in which Black women played an active role. Running from Bondage broadens and complicates how we study and teach this momentous event, one that emphasizes the chances taken by these 'Black founding mothers' and the important contributions they made to the cause of liberty

    Abstract: In the following dialogue, Anika Keinz, the invited discussant at the panel »Struggles over Europe« forming part of the »Troubling Gender« conference, and Paweł Lewicki talk about how race, gender, and sexuality are not only entangled in the East-West dynamic but co-constitute the East-West dichotomy too. They discuss racial relations and states of morality, in grappling with the question of what exactly race-critical studies can contribute to both the improved analysis of this dichotomy and to the examination of developments in Europe: What can we observe when looking, for example, at gender and sexual politics in Poland from a race-critical perspective and what can this tell us about nationalisms? Doing so, they take up the discussion Lewicki started, together with Randi Elin Gressgård and Rafał Smoczyński, in the special issue of Intersections. East European Journal of Society and Politics »Struggles over Europe. Postcolonial East/West Dynamics of Race, Gender and Sexuality« (2020, 6/3). This special issue explores the dynamics pertaining to (racialized) gender and sexuality, as well as their local expressions, and asks how they are embedded in broader dynamics and discourses on Europe, Europeanization, and the transformation of (il)liberal states. Lewicki and Keinz then continue their conversation and pick up on certain aspects that came up during the panel discussion. They reflect on how categories such as »race,« »gender,« and »sexuality« contribute to the reproduction of various understandings of »Europe« and »European modernity« and to the (self-)produced notions of »East« and »West« respectively.
    Abstract: Im folgenden Dialog sprechen Anika Keinz, die als Diskutantin des Panels "Struggles over Europe" bei der Tagung "Troubling Gender" eingeladen war, und Paweł Lewicki, einer der Organisatoren dieses Panels, darüber, wie Rasse, Geschlecht und Sexualität nicht nur in der Ost-West-Dynamik verwoben sind, sondern auch die Ost-West-Dichotomie mitkonstituieren. Sie sprechen über rassialisierte Relationen und moralische Konstellationen, während sie sich mit der Frage auseinandersetzen, was genau kritische race studies zur besseren Analyse dieser Dichotomie sowie zur Untersuchung der Entwicklungen in Europa beitragen können: Was können wir beobachten, wenn wir z.B. die Geschlechter- und Sexualpolitik in Polen aus einer rassismuskritischen Perspektive betrachten und was kann uns das über Nationalismen sagen? Damit knüpfen sie an die Diskussion an, die Lewicki gemeinsam mit Randi Elin Gressgård und Rafał Smoczyński in der Sonderausgabe von Intersections. East European Journal of Society and Politics "Struggles over Europe. Postcolonial East/West Dynamics of Race, Gender and Sexuality" (Bd. 6/3, 2020). Dieses Special Issue erkundet die Dynamiken von (rassifiziertem) Geschlecht und Sexualität mit ihren jeweiligen lokalen Ausprägungen und fragt, wie sie in breitere Dynamiken und Diskurse über Europa, Europäisierung und die Transformation (il)liberaler Staaten eingebettet sind. Lewicki und Keinz setzen ihr Gespräch fort und greifen einige der Aspekte auf, die während der Podiumsdiskussion zur Sprache kamen.     Abstract: "The book follows the movements of the concept of "woman" from the Early modern to the post-colonial age, through the words of women who challenged its patriarchal definition. The concept of "woman" is doubly polemical. It affirms sexual difference as political difference, while denying the universal character of modern political concepts which represent the unity of the political and social order, exposing its fundamental division. At the same time, "woman" is a concept marked by differences - of race, class, culture - that continually redetermine its content.     Abstract: As we face new global challenges - from climate change to the international political order - the need to re-examine the historical roots of cosmopolitanism and liberal principles on a global scale has become increasingly central to the political conversation. Cosmopolitanism and the Enlightenment brings together leading scholars in cultural history, the history of ideas and global politics in order to reassess the complexity of cosmopolitanism during the Enlightenment and its various interpretations over time. Through a fresh and revisionist perspective, the volume explores issues of universalism and cultural diversity, the idea of civilization, race, gender, empire, colonialism, global inequality, national patriotism, international and civil conflict, and other forms of political discourse, challenging the simple negative stereotype that the Enlightenment was inevitably hierarchical and Eurocentric. This timely intervention into the debate about the legacy of the Enlightenment highlights both the plurality and the continuing relevance of Enlightened cosmopolitanism to contemporary global concerns

    Abstract: Das Fotoalbum als Aufbewahrungsort einzelner Abzüge zählt seit den Anfängen zur Geschichte der Fotografie. Anfangs mit vorgestanzten Ausschnitten und gedruckter OrNamentik hochwertig gestaltet, entwickelte es sich mit dem Siegeszug der Privatfotografie im ersten Drittel des 20. Jahrhunderts als Massenartikel zum festen Bestandteil eines jeden Haushalts. Fotoalben bieten kuratierte Einblicke in den privaten Alltag. Sie geben Aufschluss darüber, was als festhaltenswert und erinnerungswürdig galt. Ausschnitthaft lassen sie die Betrachterin und den Betrachter an Unternehmungen teilhaben - an Reisen, Familienfeiern, Ausflügen, Kindheiten, aber erinnern auch an die Schrecken des Krieges. Oftmals ergänzen handschriftliche Kommentare und applizierte Tickets, Briefe oder Postkarten die eingeklebten Fotografien. Einige Forschungsprojekte, etwa am Volkskundemuseum Wien sowie am Deutschen Historischen Museum Berlin, haben in jüngerer Zeit Interesse an Fotoalben gezeigt. Daran knüpfte die Tagung "Kuratierte Erinnerungen: das Fotoalbum" im November 2022 an. Organisiert wurde sie von der Kommission Fotografie der Deutschen Gesellschaft für Empirische Kulturwissenschaft in Kooperation mit den Staatlichen Museen zu Berlin im dortigen Museum für Fotografie. Der Tagungsband vereint Beiträge von Wissenschaftler_innen aus Geschichte, Empirischer Kulturwissenschaft, Europäischer Ethnologie, Medienwissenschaft, Kunstgeschichte, Literaturwissenschaft, Erziehungswissenschaft und Pädagogik. Er liefert eine facettenreiche Sicht auf das Fotoalbum als bis in die Gegenwart überaus populäres Medium

    Abstract: Starting from a fishbowl discussion which has taken place at the conference, this paper discusses what can be gained from thinking across genderqueer theories and anthropological Europeanization research. It argues that thinking queerly includes a skepticism towards identitarian and normative understandings of Europe, as well as an ethnographic attention to that which emerges in the gaps and cracks of Europeanization, while keeping in mind the ways in which institutions working in the name of Europe generate heterogeneous experiences resulting in unequal and differentially distributed, multiple Europes. ‘Queering Europe’ oscillates between an emphasis on the central role of the sexual and the gendered in imaginations of Europe and destabilizing notions of Europe in a more general sense and is as such closely related to post-/decolonial approaches. This analytical move has three dimensions to it: Firstly, queering Europe aims at deconstructing hegemonic imaginaries of Europe. Secondly, it makes visible the pluralistic and fragmented nature of Europe(s) and the ambivalent and sometimes unforeseen consequences processes of Europeanization are accompanied by. Thirdly, queering Europe can be envisioned as a way of imagining and thinking Europe through a “critical utopianism” (Mbembe 2019) that puts solidarity center stage. In all three dimensions, an ethnography informed by decolonial critiques as well as by proposals for queering methodologies constitutes our chosen epistemological tool to gain deeper insights into queering Europe as a mode of knowledge production and political vision.
    Abstract: Ausgehend von einer Fish-Bowl-Diskussion, die während der Konferenz stattfand, diskutieren wir in unserem Beitrag, was durch ein Denken zwischen gender_queer Theorien und anthropologischer Europäisierungsforschung gewonnen werden kann. Wir argumentieren, dass queeres Denken eine Skepsis gegenüber identitären und normativen Verständnissen von Europa beinhalten muss sowie eine ethnographische Aufmerksamkeit dafür, was in den Lücken und Rissen der Europäisierung auftaucht. Gleichzeitig gilt es im Auge zu behalten, wie Institutionen, die im Namen Europas arbeiten, heterogene Erfahrungen erzeugen, die zu ungleichen und unterschiedlich verteilten, multiplen Europas führen. Insofern korrespondiert dieser Zugang mit post-/dekolonialen Ansätzen in der Anthropologie. Queering Europe oszilliert zwischen einer Aufmerksamkeit für die zentrale Rolle, die Sexualität und Geschlecht in den Imaginarien von Europa spielen, und der Destabilisierung von Vorstellungen von Europa in einem allgemeineren Sinn. Drei Dimensionen dieses analytischen Ansatzes werden diskutiert: Erstens zielt queering Europe darauf ab, hegemoniale Vorstellungen von Europa zu dekonstruieren; zweitens macht es den multiplen und fragmentierten Charakter Europas sowie die ambivalenten und manchmal unvorhersehbaren Konsequenzen sichtbar, die Europäisierungsprozesse mit sich bringen; und drittens kann queering Europe als Möglichkeit gesehen werden, Europa durch die Linse eines "kritischen Utopismus" (Mbembe 2019) zu betrachten und Solidarität in den Mittelpunkt der Überlegungen zu stellen. In allen drei Dimensionen stellt ethnographisches Arbeiten, das von dekolonialen Kritiken sowie von Vorschlägen zum Queeren von Methoden geprägt ist, das erkenntnistheoretische Werkzeug dar, um tiefere Einblicke in queering Europe als eine Art der Wissensproduktion wie der politischen Vision zu erhalten.

    Abstract: Mit den jugoslawischen Nachfolgekriegen beherrschten in den 1990ern Narrative von ewigem Hass und interethnischer Gewalt auf dem "Balkan" die westlichen Medien. Doch bereits Mitte des 19. Jahrhunderts war dieser als imaginierter "europäischer Orient" in den geopolitischen und medialen Fokus angrenzender und weit(er) entfernter Länder gerückt. Wie wurden Bilder vom "Balkan" mit orientalisierten Vorstellungen angereichert oder davon abgegrenzt? Am Beispiel der Encounter Felix Kanitz und Edith Durham sowie der serbischen US-Migrationsgemeinschaft um Mihajlo Pupin beleuchtet Eva Tamara Asboth, wie Geschichtsbilder räumlich transferiert und übersetzt wurden.     Abstract: "'Raise your voice!' and 'Speak up!' are familiar refrains that assume, all too easily, that all who speak do so for themselves, and that doing so will lead to empowerment, healing, and reconciliation. Marlene Schäfers's Voices that Matter reveals where such assumptions fall short, demonstrating that "raising one's voice" is, in some contexts, an endeavor full of anxieties, struggles, and discontents. In its attention to the voice as form, this book examines not only what voices say, but also how they do so. By focusing on the social labor that voices carry out as they travel, vibrate, and produce sound, Schäfers shows that where new vocal practices arise, they can produce new selves and practices of social relations. Few examples bring this into relief as effectively as the Kurdish context. Written texts have existed mostly on the margins of Kurdish popular culture, whereas oral genres have a long, rich legacy. As Kurdish voices gain increasing moral and political value as metaphors of empowerment, representation, and resistance, these genres are rapidly changing. As she traces the transformations in how Kurdish women relate to and employ their voices, Schäfers illustrates that "gaining voice" is no straightforward path to liberation, especially when one's voice can be selectively appropriated in empty displays of pluralist representation"--

    Abstract: "A Woman’s Empire explores a new dimension of Russian imperialism: women actively engaged in the process of late imperial expansion. The book investigates how women writers, travellers, and scientists who journeyed to and beyond Central Asia participated in Russia’s "civilizing" and colonizing mission, utilizing newly found educational opportunities while navigating powerful discourses of femininity as well as male-dominated science. Katya Hokanson shows how these Russian women resisted domestic roles in a variety of ways. The women writers include a governor general’s wife, a fiction writer who lived in Turkestan, and a famous Theosophist, among others. They make clear the perspectives of the ruling class and outline the special role of women as describers and recorders of information about local women, and as builders of "civilized" colonial Russian society with its attendant performances and social events. Although the bulk of their writings, drawings, and photography is primarily noteworthy for its cultural and historical value, A Woman’s Empire demonstrates how they also add dimension and detail to the story of Russian imperial expansion and illuminates how women encountered, imagined, and depicted Russia’s imperial Other during this period."--

    Abstract: "The rapid rise of emerging economies has produced deep-ranging changes in the global order during recent decades. At the beginning of the twenty-first century, the bipolar confrontation of the Cold War seemed to be replaced by a universalized model of political liberalism and economic neo-liberalism. In recent years, however, rising nationalism and protectionism indicate the end of unfettered globalization, a looming crisis of liberal democracy, and a return to ideologies of "systemic competition", especially vis-a-vis China. Against this background, the proposed volume takes a fresh look at the evolution of governance models in Western and non-Western civilizations - Africa, India, China, and the Muslim world in particular. These models have been largely self-contained and without intensive interaction for a long time. In the wake of globalization, systems, ideologies, and political values have become part of global discourse, eventually turning into what Samuel Huntington called a "clash of civilizations." The chapters in this volume offer perspectives on the diversity of civilizations of governance as a base for a new multilateralism in the global context. The contributions explore relevant theoretical concepts of transnational governance, law, and multiple modernity. The empirical focus is on analyzing different governance systems in non-Western civilizations and Europe, including national states and transnational institutions, traditions, and networks.     Abstract: New research into medieval women from the Anglo-Saxon to the late medieval period demonstrates their energy, defiance and wit. The phenomenon of medieval women's middle age is a stage in the lifecycle that has been frequently overlooked in preference for the examination of female youth and old age. The essays collected here, ranging from the Anglo-Saxon to the late medieval period, and drawing variously from literary studies, history, law, art and theology, address this lacuna. Taking a variety of critical approaches, the contributors consider medieval definitions, paradigms andexperiences of female middle age, analysing how the middle-aged woman perceived herself subjectively, as well as how she was perceived by others. They seek to challenge the received wisdom that in the middle ages, at forty, womenwere deemed "old" and, from that point onwards, their thoughts should be focused on preparing for death.     Abstract: "A Woman's Empire explores a new dimension of Russian imperialism: women actively engaged in the process of late imperial expansion. The book investigates how women writers, travellers, and scientists who journeyed to and beyond Central Asia participated in Russia's "civilizing" and colonizing mission, utilizing newly found educational opportunities while navigating powerful discourses of femininity as well as male-dominated science. Katya Hokanson shows how these Russian women resisted domestic roles in a variety of ways. The women writers include a governor general's wife, a fiction writer who lived in Turkestan, and a famous Theosophist, among others. They make clear the perspectives of the ruling class and outline the special role of women as describers and recorders of information about local women, and as builders of "civilized" colonial Russian society with its attendant performances and social events. Although the bulk of their writings, drawings, and photography is primarily noteworthy for its cultural and historical value, A Woman's Empire demonstrates how they also add dimension and detail to the story of Russian imperial expansion and illuminates how women encountered, imagined, and depicted Russia's imperial Other during this period."--

    Abstract: National majorities and their governments often demand that immigrants and other minorities must be "good": they should work hard, contribute to society, and adapt to dominant cultural norms. Such stereotypical labels for national outsiders, ranging from "good immigrants" to "good Muslims" and "model minorities", imply that their inclusion and recognition becomes conditional on fulfilling certain standards of behaviour and identity that are predetermined by the national majority. The affected minorities respond in diverse ways, at times striving to be recognised as "good" and at times rejecting these regimes of conditional inclusion and citizenship openly. This book offers ground-breaking insights on how these dynamics of conditional inclusion and "good" citizenship play out today, with a focus on migrant and immigrant-origin minorities in Europe and the Americas. This book shows that conditional inclusion is a globally widespread tool for controlling and rank-ordering minorities. As immigrants respond through diverse struggles for inclusion and recognition, these struggles reveal a hidden battleground of citizenship on which minorities negotiate who can be included and accepted in a given state or society. Their experience shows that conditionality is not an outlier of citizenship, but rather one of its universal core principles.

    Abstract: What makes some multiethnic states integrate and others descend into civil war? Ishiyama and Breuning extend traditional explanations centered on socioeconomic, cultural, and historical factors to argue that the actions of leaders of ethnic segments-too often ignored-are also critical determinants of policy outcomes. Applying a framework derived from comparative politics and IR theory, the authors explore two sets of empirical cases: the emergence of new nationalisms in old European democracies (the United Kingdom and Belgium) and the reemergence of old nationalisms in several new democracies (Bulgaria, Slovakia, Estonia, and Latvia). Their work sheds crucially important light on an issue that is one of the most prominent in world politics today

    Abstract: Over the last few decades, the politics of gender and sexuality have turned extremely hostile across Europe. Long fought for rights and antidiscriminatory politics have come under heavy attack, while Gender Studies programs have been banned. In tandem, feminist arguments are being instrumentalized by right-wing movements so as to cement nationalist projects and racist positions. This turmoil regarding the politics of gender in Europe has become even more complex as gender, sexuality, and race find themselves used as markers of both progress and backwardness within the postcolonial, postsocialist European landscape reproducing old and creating new hierarchies within the societies and between them. Based on the 2021 conference “Troubling Gender: New Turbulences in the Politics of Gender in Europe,” organized by the Commission on Gender Research and Queer Anthropology of the German Association for European Ethnology and Empirical Cultural Analyses, this issue of Berliner Blätter hence assembles an array of analytical papers as well as polyvocal written discussions seeking to make sense of these developments as well as of their local and regional articulations and effects. The issue brings together queer/feminist voices and analyses from the Eastern and Western European contexts; furthermore, it examines the possibilities for solidarity across different positionalities and engages with diverse histories of struggle. The issue presents analyses informed by gender and queer theory, as mostly based on ethnographic research, and thus ultimately allows us to better understand the current conjuncture of the politics of gender and sexuality in and of Europe. With this, it partakes in the ongoing feminist and queer struggles to build a better future for all those concerned.
    Abstract: Im letzten Jahrzehnt haben sich Politiken rund um Geschlechter und Sexualitätspolitik in ganz Europa äußerst feindselig entwickelt. Erkämpfte Rechte und eine antidiskriminatorische Politik sind massiv unter Beschuss geraten, Studiengänge der Geschlechterforschung wurden verboten. Gleichzeitig werden feministische Argumente von rechtsgerichteten Bewegungen instrumentalisiert, um nationalistische Projekte und rassistische Positionen zu zementieren. Noch weiter kompliziert wird die Situation dadurch, dass Geschlecht, Sexualität und Rasse in der postkolonialen, postsozialistischen europäischen Landschaft als Marker für Fortschritt und Rückständigkeit dienen, wodurch alte Hierarchien innerhalb der Gesellschaften und zwischen ihnen reproduziert und neue geschaffen werden. Ausgehend von der Konferenz „Troubling Gender: Neue Turbulenzen in der Geschlechterpolitik in Europa“, organisiert 2021 von der Kommission für Geschlechterforschung und Queere Anthropologie in der Deutschen Gesellschaft für Europäische Ethnologie und Empirische Kulturwissenschaft (DGEKW), bringt die Ausgabe der Berliner Blätter queere und feministische Stimmen und Analysen aus dem ost- und westeuropäischen Kontext zusammen. Gemeinsam versuchen sie, diese Entwicklungen, ihre lokalen und regionalen Artikulationen und Auswirkungen zu verstehen. Neben den geschlechter- und queertheoretisch fundierten Analysen, die sich größtenteils auf ethnografische Forschungen stützen, ergründen polyvokale, dialogisch geschriebene Beiträge die Möglichkeiten der Solidarität über verschiedene Positionen hinweg und zeigen die verschiedenen Geschichten von gender- und queerpolitischen Kämpfen und Epistemologien in Europa. Die Ausgabe ermöglicht so ein differenziertes Verständnis der aktuellen Situation der Geschlechter- und Sexualitätspolitik in und für Europa und hat damit teil an den laufenden feministischen und queeren Kämpfen um eine bessere Zukunft für alle Beteiligten.
