    Abstract: This volume is a product of the 13th International Conference on Archaeological Prospection 2019, which was hosted by the Department of Environmental Science in the Faculty of Science at the Institute of Technology Sligo. The conference is held every two years under the banner of the International Society for Archaeological Prospection and this was the first time that the conference was held in Ireland. New Global Perspectives on Archaeological Prospection draws together over 90 papers addressing archaeological prospection techniques, methodologies and case studies from 33 countries across Africa, Asia, Australasia, Europe and North America, reflecting current and global trends in archaeological prospection. At this particular ICAP meeting, specific consideration was given to the development and use of archaeological prospection in Ireland, archaeological feedback for the prospector, applications of prospection technology in the urban environment and the use of legacy data. Papers include novel research areas such as magnetometry near the equator, drone-mounted radar, microgravity assessment of tombs, marine electrical resistivity tomography, convolutional neural networks, data processing, automated interpretive workflows and modelling as well as recent improvements in remote sensing, multispectral imaging and visualisation

    Abstract: In den gentilen Verbänden der Übergangsphase von der Antike zum Mittelalter ist eine Vielzahl von duces bekannt, die herausgehobene Funktionen hatten. Trotz ihrer großen Bedeutung fehlte bisher eine systematische, vergleichende Darstellung dieser Amtsträger und auch die Frage nach der Vorbildwirkung der römischen duces wurde nicht tiefgehend behandelt. Diese Forschungslücke wird durch den Band geschlossen. Für die Untersuchung wurden die Reiche der Alemannen, Burgunder, Westgoten, Ostgoten, Langobarden und Franken (auch der rechtsrheinischen Dukate) bis zum Anfang des siebenten Jahrhunderts betrachtet. Dabei zeigte sich, dass nur in vier davon duces existierten. Diese entwickelten sich zwar auf ähnliche Weise, doch ließen sich auch Unterschiede feststellen. Anders als andere, aus dem Römischen bekannte Positionen, waren die duces deutlich variabler. Auch die Analyse der Übernahme römischer Strukturen fiel nicht eindeutig aus, jedoch sind Fälle eindeutiger Kontinuität sehr selten. Die Ergebnisse der Studie sind durch zahlreiche Karten illustriert. Die Gesamtdarstellung bietet einen neuen Zugang aus der Perspektive der Verwaltungsgeschichte und ergänzt die intensive Erforschung des Wandels in der Spätantike um eine weitere Facette.

    Abstract: "Over much of its rule, the Syrian regime of Hafez al-Asad and his successor, Bashar al-Asad, used violence on a massive scale, deploying disproportionate physical and destructive force to silence its critics and opponents. Indeed, the regime, as constituted under the al-Asads, has as its nucleus not only the figures occupying the top rung of political office, but also the apparatuses of violence, in particular the security services and elite military units. This security regime (al-nidham al-amni) has consistently acted in ways that convey the message that violence is the primary and organising modality of action in dealing with domestic opposition. The extent and scope of killing and destruction mounted by the security and military forces over approximately 40 years of al-Asad regime rule has made manifest a politics of extermination and annihilation as integral to the form of rule in Syria. Rather than betraying an irrational approach to government, this violence is governmental, not in the sense of being merely repressive, but as productive and performative...as shaping regime-citizen relations and forming political subjectivities"...

    Abstract: In 1852 Sir George Cathcart pronounced that the amaTshatshu chieftaincy no longer existed: “I have broken and banished the tribe”, he boasted. This deeply researched book, at once clear-sighted and moving, traces the consequences of this proscription to the present day. In the course of a detailed examination of 200 years of this Thembu chieftaincy, Mager and Velelo illuminate a number of large and pressing themes in South African history. These include the contested meanings of chieftaincy and ethnicity; the complex politics and violence of settler colonialism and apartheid-era Bantustans and their consequences in the present day, and the meaning of land and land restitution in the context of the continuing neglect of rural populations.     Abstract: This book provides an innovative cultural history of Italian colonialism and its impact on twentieth-century ideas of empire and anti-colonialism. In October 1935, Mussoliniʼs army attacked Ethiopia, defying the League of Nations and other European imperial powers. The book explores the widespread political and literary responses to the invasion, highlighting how Pan-Africanism drew its sustenance from opposition to Italy’s late empire-building, and reading the work of George Padmore, Claude McKay, and CLR James alongside the feminist and socialist anti-colonial campaigner Sylvia Pankhurst’s broadsheet, New Times and Ethiopia News. Extending into the postwar period, the book examines the fertile connections between anti-colonialism and anti-fascism in Italian literature and art, tracing the emergence of a “resistance aesthetics” in works such as The Battle of Algiers and Giovanni Pirelli’s harrowing books of testimony about Algeria’s war of independence, both inspired by Frantz Fanon.     Abstract: "Campaigns against prostitution of young people in the United States have surged and ebbed multiple times over the last fifty years. Fighting the U.S. Youth Sex Trade: Race, Gender, and Politics examines how politically and ideologically diverse activists joined together to change perceptions and public policies on youth involvement in the sex trade over time, reframing "juvenile prostitution" of the 1970s as "commercial sexual exploitation of children" in the 1990s, and then as "domestic minor sex trafficking" in the 2000s. Based on organizational archives and interviews with activists, Baker shows that these campaigns were fundamentally shaped by the politics of gender, race and class, and global anti-trafficking campaigns. The author argues that the very frames that have made these movements so successful in achieving new laws and programs for youth have limited their ability to achieve systematic reforms that could decrease youth vulnerability to involvement in the sex trade"--

    Abstract: Der Begriff der Aneignung erlebt in Diskursen zu Theorie, Praxis und Politik der Stadtentwicklung ein Revival: Angesichts der Dynamiken spätmoderner Ökonomie und Politik geht es um die Verfügbarkeit und den selbstbestimmten Gebrauch von städtischem Raum und Lebenszeit. Dieser Diskurs schließt auch das »Selber machen« von urbanen Freiräumen mit ein, »Stadtentwicklung von unten« soll die urbanen Freiräume von morgen bestimmen. Bereits nach der Planungseuphorie der 1950/60er Jahre lenkte man den Blick auf »andere« Akteure der Produktion und des Gebrauchs von urbanen Freiräumen. Dieses Buch widmet sich der vergleichenden Betrachtung der damaligen und aktuellen Theorien über die Aneignung von urbanen Freiräumen in verschiedenen Fachdisziplinen.

    Abstract: Mit der Erschließung der Ozeane und der Entdeckung Amerikas begann die Globalisierung in der Frühen Neuzeit. Georg Jochum stellt dar, wie diese Entgrenzung der Welt, die in der Devise »Plus Ultra« ihren signifikanten Ausdruck fand, zum Basisparadigma der Moderne wurde. Der ambivalente Charakter der okzidentalen Zivilisation zwischen emanzipativer Weltoffenheit und kolonialer Weltbeherrschung hat hier seinen Ursprung. Auch die gegenwärtige ökologische Krise und die zunehmenden Spannungen in der Weltgesellschaft sind ferne Folgen dieser Entgrenzungsdynamik. Auf diese historische und zeitdiagnostische Analyse aufbauend werden Wege der Transformation hin zu einer zur reflexiven Selbstbegrenzung fähigen, nachhaltigeren Gesellschaft skizziert.

    Abstract: "In this analysis of the life of Arnošt Frischer, an influential Jewish nationalist activist, Jan Láníček, reflects upon how the Jewish community in Czechoslovakia dealt with the challenges that arose from their volatile relationship with the state authorities in the first half of the 20th century. The Jews in the Bohemian Lands experienced several political regimes in the period from 1918 to the late 1940s: the Habsburg Empire, the first democratic Czechoslovak republic, the post-Munich authoritarian Czecho-Slovak republic, the Nazi regime, renewed Czechoslovak democracy and the Communist regime. Frischer's involvement in local and central politics affords us invaluable insights into the relations and negotiations between the Jewish activists and these diverse political authorities in the Bohemian Lands. Vital coverage is also given to the relatively under-researched subject of the Jewish responses to the Nazi persecution and the attempts of the exiled Jewish leadership to alleviate the plight of the Jews in occupied Europe.     Abstract: It is a little known fact that as early as the thirteenth century, Europe's political and religious powers tried to physically mark and distinguish the Jews from the rest of society. During the Renaissance, Italian Jews first had to wear a yellow round badge on their chest, and then later, a yellow beret. The discriminatory marks were a widespread phenomenon with serious consequences for Jewish communities and their relations with Christians. Beginning with a sartorial study - how the Jews were marked on their clothing and what these marks meant - the book offers an in-depth analysis of anti-Jewish discrimination across three Italian city-states: Milan, Genoa, and Piedmont. Moving beyond Italy, it also examines the place of Jews and Jewry law in the increasingly interconnected world of Early Modern European politics

    Abstract: This is a revolutionary reinterpretation of the French past from the early fifteenth century to the establishment of the Third Republic, focused on public challenges and defenses of masculine hierarchy in relations between women and men. Karen Offen surveys heated exchanges around women's 'influence'; their exclusion from 'authority'; the increasing prominence of biomedical thinking and population issues; concerns about education, intellect, and the sexual politics of knowledge; and the politics of women's work. Initially, the majority of commentators were literate and influential men. However, as more and more women attained literacy, they too began to analyze their situation in print and to contest men's claims about who women were and should be, and what they should be restrained from doing, and why. As urban print culture exploded and revolutionary ideas of 'equality' fuelled women's claims for emancipation, this question resonated throughout francophone Europe and, ultimately, across the seas

    Abstract: An innovative examination of American society, culture, and politics, The Age of Charisma argues that the modern relationship between American leaders and followers grew out of a unique group of charismatic social movements prominent in the late-nineteenth and early-twentieth centuries. Drawing on hundreds of letters and testimonials, Jeremy C. Young illustrates how 'personal magnetism' in public speaking shaped society by enabling a shift from emotionally-inaccessible leadership to emotionally-available leadership. This charismatic speaking style caused a rapid transformation in the leader-follower relationship, creating an emotional link between speakers and listeners, and the effects of this social transformation remain with us today. Young argues that ultimately, charismatic movements enhanced American democracy by encouraging the personalization of leadership - creating a culture in which today's leaders appeal directly to Americans through mass media

    Abstract: »Gewalt« und »Raum« als analytische Kategorien, die nach Entstehungsbedingungen von Konflikten und Kriegen fragen. Gewaltforschung hat Konjunktur. Seit einigen Jahren fragen vor allem Historiker und Historikerinnen danach, inwiefern kollektive Gewalthandlungen durch räumliche Bedingungen und Logiken beeinflusst werden. Die Autorinnen und Autoren des Bandes greifen die Forschungsdebatte über »Gewalträume« und »Gewaltmärkte« auf und untersuchen koloniale Landnahmen in verschiedenen epochalen, nationalen und lokalen Kontexten. Sie analysieren die Wechselwirkungen von kolonialen Raumbildern, staatlichem Ordnungshandeln und situativen Gewaltmobilisierungen. Im Zentrum stehen Raumbilder wie der »Leere Raum« und die »Frontier«, die nicht nur Wahrnehmung, Inbesitznahme und Beherrschung kolonialen Landes mental begleiteten, sondern signifikante Eroberungs-, Herrschafts- und Gewaltdynamiken hervorbrachten. Ulrike Jureit, geb. 1964, ist Historikerin und seit Oktober 2000 wissenschaftliche Mitarbeiterin der Hamburger Stiftung zur Förderung von Wissenschaft und Kultur. Ihr Forschungsschwerpunkt liegt in der Sozial- und Kulturgeschichte des 19. und 20. Jahrhunderts. Sie arbeitet unter anderem zur Generationentheorie, zu Erinnerungs- und Gedächtniskulturen sowie zu politischen Raum- und Territorialordnungen.

    Abstract: "Many of the wars of the late Republic were largely civil conflicts. There was, therefore, a tension between the traditional expectation that triumphs should be celebrated for victories over foreign enemies and the need of the great commanders to give full expression to their prestige and charisma, and to legitimize their power. Triumphs in the Age of Civil War rethinks the nature and the character of the phenomenon of civil war during the Late Republic. At the same time it focuses on a key feature of the Roman socio-political order, the triumph, and argues that a commander could in practice expect to triumph after a civil war victory if it could also be represented as being over a foreign enemy, even if the principal opponent was clearly Roman. Significantly, the civil aspect of the war did not have to be denied. Carsten Hjort Lange provides the first study to consider the Roman triumph during the age of civil war, and argues that the idea of civil war as 'normal' reflects the way civil war permeated the politics and society of the Late Roman Republic"...

    Abstract: This book is an investigative study of Christian and Islamic relations in the kingdom of Sicily during the eleventh and twelfth centuries. It has three objectives. First, it establishes how and why the Norman rulers of Sicily, all of whom were Christians, incorporated Muslim soldiers, farmers, scholars, and bureaucrats into the formation of their own royal identities and came to depend on their Muslim subjects to project and enforce their political power. Second, it examines how the Islamic influence within the Sicilian court drew little scrutiny, and even less criticism, from intellectuals in the wider world of Latin Christendom during the time period. Finally, it contextualizes and explains the eventual emergence of Christian popular violence against Muslims in Sicily in the latter half of the twelfth century and the evolution of a wider discourse of anti-Islamic sentiment throughout Western Europe

    Abstract: Mainstream historical accounts of the development of capitalism describe a process which is fundamentally European - a system that was born in the mills and factories of England or under the guillotines of the French Revolution. In this groundbreaking book, a very different story is told. How the West Came to Rule offers a unique interdisciplinary and international historical account of the origins of capitalism. It argues that contrary to the dominant wisdom, capitalism's origins should not be understood as a development confined to the geographically and culturally sealed borders of Europe, but the outcome of a wider array of global processes in which non-European societies played a decisive role. Through an outline of the uneven histories of Mongolian expansion, New World discoveries, Ottoman-Habsburg rivalry, the development of the Asian colonies and bourgeois revolutions, Alexander Anievas and Kerem Nisancioglu provide an account of how these diverse events and processes came together to produce capitalism

    Abstract: Tausende Internierte der Lager in Südafrika und Deutsch-Südwestafrika starben, manche verloren binnen weniger Wochen ihre gesamte Familie, die Überlebenden wurden durch die Erfahrung von Deportation, Mangel, Krankheiten, Gewalt und Tod traumatisiert. »Die ganze Sache war ein trauriges Fiasko«, gestand Sir Alfred Milner am 8. Dezember 1901 in einem vertraulichen Brief. Ein Fiasko im Sinne von Misserfolg waren die Konzentrationslager auch aus der Perspektive der Kolonialisierer, denn in keinem der Fälle, die Jonas Kreienbaum untersucht, war das Massensterben der Internierten beabsichtigt. Die Lager waren nicht als Vernichtungslager geplant, sondern primär militärische Instrumente, die durch die Konzentration und damit Kontrolle der Bevölkerung zur Beendigung langwieriger Kolonialkriege beitragen sollten. Sie dienten gleichzeitig der möglichst effektiven staatlichen Durchdringung der Kolonie, fungierten als Stätten der Erziehung und vor allem der Arbeitskräftebeschaffung und versprachen damit zentrale Ziele des kolonialen Staats erreichbar zu machen. Koloniale und nationalsozialistische Lager hatten, wie der Autor auf Basis differenzierter Vergleiche herausarbeitet, weniger miteinander gemein als der gemeinsame Begriff suggeriert.     Abstract: In Encountering Empire, Elisabeth Engel traces how black American missionaries – men and women grappling with their African heritage – established connections in Africa during the heyday of European colonialism. Reconstructing the black American 'colonial encounter,' Engel analyzes the images, transatlantic relationships, and possibilities of representation African American missionaries developed for themselves while negotiating colonial regimes. Between 1900 and 1939, these missionaries paved the way for the African Methodist Episcopal Church, the oldest independent black American institution, to establish a presence in Britain's sub-Saharan colonies. Illuminating a neglected chapter of Atlantic history, Engel demonstrates that African Americans used imperial structures for their own self-determination. Encountering Empire thus challenges the notion that pan-Africanism was the only viable strategy for black emancipation.

    Abstract: Die Nachwirkungen des europäischen Imperialismus im 19. und 20. Jahrhundert prägen bis heute das Gesicht ganzer Kontinente und das Gefl echt der internationalen Beziehungen. Es ist deshalb verkürzt, die Epoche nur als Vorspiel zum Ersten Weltkrieg zu betrachten. Vielmehr müssen auch die kolonialisierten Gebiete selbst und die Aufarbeitung der imperialistischen Vergangenheit durch die ehemaligen Kolonialmächte in den Blick genommen werden. Das vorliegende Heft geht beiden Aspekten am Beispiel des Herero-Aufstands nach. Es erschließt anhand zahlreicher Quellen die Realität deutscher Kolonialpolitik, die im ersten Völkermord des 20. Jahrhunderts mündete. Und es zeigt auf, wie die bundesrepublikanische Gesellschaft nach 1945 mit den Ereignissen in Deutsch-Südwestafrika umgegangen ist. Debatten der Gegenwart über mögliche deutsche Entschädigungsleistungen schließen das Heft und fordern die Schülerinnen und Schüler zu begründeten Werturteilen auf.
