    Abstract: "The Routledge Handbook of Urban Food Governance is the first collection to reflect on and compile the currently dispersed histories, concepts and practices involved in the increasingly popular field of urban food governance. Unpacking the power of urban food governance and its capacity to affect lives through the transformation of cities and the global food system, the handbook is structured into five sections. The second presents a broad overview of the different frames, theories and concepts that have informed urban food governance scholarship. Section four presents current knowledge on how urban food governance involves different agencies that operate across scales and sectors.     Abstract: "This book interrogates the patterns and discursive structures that have generated the seeming urgency of Muslims' integration. Focusing on Germany, it problematizes the grounds on which politics of integration are justified and reasoned upon, and thereby investigates divergent operations of power vis-à-vis Muslims and Islam in a formally liberal-secular society. The integration paradigm in Germany has been predicated on an imperial knowledge regime, in which Islam figures as the external friend or enemy of an imagined Christian secular. This book analyzes three kinds of integration practices as symptomatic sites for the multifaceted dimensions of power in this paradigm: the scientific measurement of Muslims' degrees of integration which are correlated with their degrees of religiosity; the politics of recognition promoted by state-organized dialogue with Muslims; and the threat of sanction, found in the regulations of citizenship and explicitly in citizenship tests. Centrally, the book argues that the paradigm of integration navigates between universalist claims and particularistic-racial and religious-reenactments of a secular nation-state framework at moments in which this very framework is crumbling."

    Abstract: For the past decade, historian Dipesh Chakrabarty has been one of the most influential scholars addressing the meaning of climate change. Climate change, he argues, upends long-standing ideas of history, modernity, and globalization. The burden of The Climate of History in a Planetary Age is to grapple with what this means and to confront humanities scholars with ideas they have been reluctant to reconsider--from the changed nature of human agency to a new acceptance of universals. Chakrabarty argues that we must see ourselves from two perspectives at once: the planetary and the global. This distinction is central to Chakrabarty's work--the globe is a human-centric construction, while a planetary perspective intentionally decenters the human. Featuring wide-ranging excursions into historical and philosophical literatures, The Climate of History in a Planetary Age boldly considers how to frame the human condition in troubled times. As we open ourselves to the implications of the Anthropocene, few writers are as likely as Chakrabarty to shape our understanding of the best way forward

    Abstract: "Throughout Africa, growing numbers of women are coming together and making their voices heard, mobilising around causes ranging from democracy and land rights to campaigns against domestic violence. In Tanzania and Tunisia, women have made major gains in their struggle for equal political rights, and in Sierra Leone and Liberia women have been at the forefront of efforts to promote peace and reconciliation. While some of these movements have been influenced by international feminism and external donors, increasingly it is African women who are shaping the global struggle for women's rights. Bringing together African authors who themselves are part of the activist groups, this collection represents the only comprehensive and up-to-date overview of women's movements in contemporary Africa.     Abstract: In the early 2000s, mainstream international news outlets celebrated the growth of Weblogistan-the online and real-life transnational network of Iranian bloggers-and depicted it as a liberatory site that gave voice to Iranians. As Sima Shakhsari argues in Politics of Rightful Killing, the common assumptions of Weblogistan as a site of civil society consensus and resistance to state oppression belie its deep internal conflicts. While Weblogistan was an effective venue for some Iranians to "practice democracy," it served as a valuable site for the United States to surveil bloggers and express anti-Iranian sentiment and policies. At the same time, bloggers used the network to self-police and enforce gender and sexuality norms based on Western liberal values in ways that unwittingly undermined Weblogistan's claims of democratic participation. In this way, Weblogistan became a site of cybergovernmentality, where biopolitical security regimes disciplined and regulated populations. Analyzing online and off-line ethnography, Shakhsari provides an account of digital citizenship that raises questions about the internet's relationship to political engagement, militarism, and democracy

    Abstract: Modernity, Minority, and the Public Sphere: Jews and Christians in the Middle East explores the many facets associated with the questions of modernity and minority in the context of religious communities in the Middle East by focusing on inter-communal dialogues and identity construction among the Jewish and Christian communities of the Middle East and paying special attention to the concept of space. This volume draws examples of these issues from experiences in the public sphere such as education, public performance, and political engagement discussing how religious communities were perceived and how they perceived themselves. Based on the conference proceedings from the 2013 conference at Leiden University entitled Common Ground? Changing Interpretations of Public Space in the Middle East among Jews, Christians and Muslims in the 19th and 20th Century this volume presents a variety of cases of minority engagement in Middle Eastern society.

    Description / Table of Contents: Der Generationenvergleich in diesem Buch stellt anhand qualitativer Interviews mit Vertretern der Geburtsjahre 1930 bis 1988 ostdeutsche Selbstwahrnehmungen dar. Dies geschieht im Hinblick auf ihre generationellen Eigenheiten in den Einstellungen zur DDR und Wiedervereinigung, in der alltagskulturellen Sicht auf DDR und BRD und in der Selbst- und Fremdwahrnehmung. Dabei zeigt sich, dass Aufbau-, Integrierte, Distanzierte und Wendekinder-Generation je typische Wege gefunden haben, zwischen früher und heute zu vermitteln. Im Zentrum stehen generationstypische Narrative und Erzählstrategien, mit denen die spannungsreichen Identitäten konstruiert und die DDR-geprägten Selbstbilder gegenüber den Transformationsanforderungen abgeschirmt oder anschlussfähig gehalten bzw. miteinander vermischt werden

    Abstract: Im Mainstream der Beteiligungsforschung fungiert das brasilianische Porto Alegre als ein gelungenes Modell partizipativer Kommunalpolitik. Die Bezeichnung ?Stadt der Demokratie" pragt das Image dieser Stadt, die oft in Verbindung mit dem Verfahren des Burgerhaushaltes untersucht wird. Doch Rogerio R. Mororo prasentiert ein ganz anderes Bild von Porto Alegre. Er kommt in seiner Analyse zu den Ergebnissen, dass direkte Burgerbeteiligung in Porto Alegre bislang zwar zu mehr Legitimation politischer Entscheidungsfindungen beigetragen hat, jedoch nicht zu Veranderungen bestehender Machtstrukturen und ebenso wenig zur spurbaren Minderung von Missstanden wie krassen raumlichen und sozialen Disparitaten in der lokalen Gesellschaft. Diese Tatsache wird jedoch von einem demokratischen Mythos verklart.

This occurs within an international system that still remains decentralized, composed of independent nation-states as major actors. Prof. Kamens argues that as globalization intensifies, this system of nation-states becomes more saturated and dense with structure. Intensified globalization has produced a world society, thanks to the spread of global capitalism, education, democracy and bureaucracy. The upshot is that world culture travels quickly and produces 'recipes' for the development of an 'imagined community' that has increasing commonalities across societies. The book examines the role of education in diffusing such attitudes and models, as global citizens confront national institutions.

    Abstract: Die Frage nach der Existenz von europäischer Öffentlichkeit verweist auf die Möglichkeit der Demokratisierung der Europäischen Union und bezieht von da her ihren erkenntnistheoretischen Sinn sowie ihre praktische Relevanz. Aus einer europäischen Perspektive besteht der europäische Kommunikationsraum aus segmentär differenzierten nationalen Öffentlichkeiten. Europäische Öffentlichkeit kann infolge dessen nur als Emergenzphänomen der Transnationalisierung nationaler Öffentlichkeit entstehen. Dieser Prozess ist allerdings konfliktinduziert und führt zu ambivalenten Konstruktionen kollektiver Identitäten: Neben starken nationalen Identitäten existiert eine bislang nur schwach ausgebildete europäische Identität, die sich allerdings dann wieder verflüchtigt, sobald eine konfliktinduzierte Bedrohungsperzeption von nationalen Ressourcen entsteht. Solange dieser Mechanismus wirkt, ist eine mit dem Nationalstaat vergleichbare Demokratisierung der EU auf supranationaler Ebene bestandgefährdend.

    Abstract: Das Buch untersucht, weshalb der Elite-Begriff erst nach 1945 in Deutschland eine tragende Rolle zur Beschreibung der politisch-sozialen Ordnung spielte. "Elite" wird dabei als eine bestimmte Form des Meinungswissens über die Ordnung der Gesellschaft verstanden, das im Wesentlichen auf vier Annahmen basiert: 1. Jede Gesellschaft zerfällt in die Elite und die Nicht-Elite. 2. Die Elite bildet den (einzig) relevanten Teil einer Gesellschaft. 3. Eliten werden sozial wirksam durch die Herstellung eines Konsenses, nicht durch Unterwerfung. 4. Elite-Mitglieder werden in Systemen der Leistungsauslese unter Konkurrenzbedingungen ausgewählt. Damit wurde der westdeutschen Gesellschaft genau die stabile politisch-ideelle Ordnung gegeben, die den politischen Systemen seit 1871 fehlte

    Abstract: Repräsentative empirische Studien über Ausländer sind selten. Vor diesem Hintergrund liefert die Untersuchung von Claudio Caballero auf Basis der Mainzer Ausländerstudie mit fast 1800 Befragten wertvolle Erkenntnisse über Integrationsformen und grundlegende politische Einstellungen von in Deutschland lebenden Ausländern. Die Befürwortung demokratischer Prinzipien sowie die Akzeptanz politischer Institutionen und Akteure konstituieren die Unterstützung des politischen Systems. Der Autor zeigt, dass ein zwar differenzierter, aber dennoch klar positiver Zusammenhang zwischen gesellschaftlicher Integration und politischer Unterstützung besteht. Hier aufgewachsene Ausländer können prinzipiell einen ähnlichen Sozialisationsprozess wie deutsche Staatsbürger durchlaufen, was die Herausbildung eines vergleichbaren, systemstabilisierenden Sets an Grundeinstellungen wahrscheinlich werden lässt. Hingegen können Ausländer als Folge von Integrationsdefiziten negative Einstellungen gegenüber dem politischen System aufweisen. Der Integrationsförderung kommt insofern eine entscheidende Bedeutung zu, als sie langfristig zur Entwicklung von politischer Unterstützung und somit zur Stabilisierung des politischen Systems beiträgt.

    Abstract: Im Unterschied zu Menschen der asiatischen Schwellenländer betrachten Politiker, Universitätslehrer und Geschäftsleute aus afrikanischen Ländern die Globalisierung eher mit Furcht: Können hochgradig hilfeabhängig gewordene Volkswirtschaften hoffen, nicht nur die Risiken der Globalisierung erleiden zu müssen, sondern auch von ihren Chancen profitieren zu können? Das Buch versucht, auf diese Schicksalsfrage Afrikas eine differenzierte Antwort zu geben. Es wird aufgezeigt, dass Afrika zwar weitgehend als bisheriger Verlierer der Globalisierung bezeichnet werden muss, dass jedoch vielerlei Formen der Anpassung und aktiven Bewältigung der globalen Herausforderungen entwickelt wurden. Die Globalisierung erscheint zwar als "Falle" : sie ist von Afrikanern nicht ersehnt worden, aber auch aus Fallen gibt es Auswege, und Modernisierung wird keineswegs abgelehnt. Afrika gibt es nur im Plural, und der weit verbreitete Afropessimismus tut den Afrikanerinnen und Afrikanern Unrecht, die unter schwierigsten materiellen Bedingungen für Demokratie und Menschenrechte und gegen Korruption und Selbstzerstörung eintreten.

    Abstract: Few challenges to the modern dream of democratic citizenship appear greater than the presence of severe ethnic, religious, and linguistic divisions in society. With their diverse religions and ethnic communities, the Southeast Asian countries of Malaysia, Singapore, and Indonesia have grappled with this problem since achieving independence after World War II. Each country has on occasion been torn by violence over the proper terms for accommodating pluralism. Until the Asian economic crisis of 1997, however, these nations also enjoyed one of the most sustained economic expansions the non-Western world has ever seen.This timely volume brings together fifteen leading specialists of the region to consider the impact of two generations of nation-building and market-making on pluralism and citizenship in these deeply divided Asian societies. Examining the new face of pluralism from the perspective of markets, politics, gender, and religion, the studies show that each country has developed a strikingly different response to the challenges of citizenship and diversity. The contributors, most of whom come Southeast Asia, pay particular attention to the tension between state and societal approaches to citizenship. They suggest that the achievement of an effectively participatory public sphere in these countries will depend not only on the presence of an independent "civil society," but on a synergy of state and society that nurtures a public culture capable of mediating ethnic, religious, and gender divides.The Politics of Multiculturalism will be of special interest to students of Southeast Asian history and society, anthropologists grappling with questions of citizenship and culture, political scientists studying democracy across cultures, and all readers concerned with the prospects for civility and tolerance in a multicultural world
