    Abstract: "The Routledge Handbook of Urban Food Governance is the first collection to reflect on and compile the currently dispersed histories, concepts and practices involved in the increasingly popular field of urban food governance.     Abstract: "This book interrogates the patterns and discursive structures that have generated the seeming urgency of Muslims' integration. Focusing on Germany, it problematizes the grounds on which politics of integration are justified and reasoned upon, and thereby investigates divergent operations of power vis-à-vis Muslims and Islam in a formally liberal-secular society. The integration paradigm in Germany has been predicated on an imperial knowledge regime, in which Islam figures as the external friend or enemy of an imagined Christian secular. This book analyzes three kinds of integration practices as symptomatic sites for the multifaceted dimensions of power in this paradigm: the scientific measurement of Muslims' degrees of integration which are correlated with their degrees of religiosity; the politics of recognition promoted by state-organized dialogue with Muslims; and the threat of sanction, found in the regulations of citizenship and explicitly in citizenship tests. Centrally, the book argues that the paradigm of integration navigates between universalist claims and particularistic-racial and religious-reenactments of a secular nation-state framework at moments in which this very framework is crumbling."

    Abstract: For the past decade, historian Dipesh Chakrabarty has been one of the most influential scholars addressing the meaning of climate change. Climate change, he argues, upends long-standing ideas of history, modernity, and globalization. The burden of The Climate of History in a Planetary Age is to grapple with what this means and to confront humanities scholars with ideas they have been reluctant to reconsider--from the changed nature of human agency to a new acceptance of universals. Chakrabarty argues that we must see ourselves from two perspectives at once: the planetary and the global. This distinction is central to Chakrabarty's work--the globe is a human-centric construction, while a planetary perspective intentionally decenters the human. Featuring wide-ranging excursions into historical and philosophical literatures, The Climate of History in a Planetary Age boldly considers how to frame the human condition in troubled times. As we open ourselves to the implications of the Anthropocene, few writers are as likely as Chakrabarty to shape our understanding of the best way forward

    Abstract: "Throughout Africa, growing numbers of women are coming together and making their voices heard, mobilising around causes ranging from democracy and land rights to campaigns against domestic violence. In Tanzania and Tunisia, women have made major gains in their struggle for equal political rights, and in Sierra Leone and Liberia women have been at the forefront of efforts to promote peace and reconciliation. While some of these movements have been influenced by international feminism and external donors, increasingly it is African women who are shaping the global struggle for women's rights. Bringing together African authors who themselves are part of the activist groups, this collection represents the only comprehensive and up-to-date overview of women's movements in contemporary Africa. Drawing on case studies and fresh empirical material from across the continent, the authors challenge the prevailing assumption that notions of women's rights have trickled down from the global north to the south, showing instead that these movements have been shaped by above all the unique experiences and concerns of the local women involved"--Publisher's description

    Abstract: In the early 2000s, mainstream international news outlets celebrated the growth of Weblogistan-the online and real-life transnational network of Iranian bloggers-and depicted it as a liberatory site that gave voice to Iranians. As Sima Shakhsari argues in Politics of Rightful Killing, the common assumptions of Weblogistan as a site of civil society consensus and resistance to state oppression belie its deep internal conflicts. While Weblogistan was an effective venue for some Iranians to "practice democracy," it served as a valuable site for the United States to surveil bloggers and express anti-Iranian sentiment and policies. At the same time, bloggers used the network to self-police and enforce gender and sexuality norms based on Western liberal values in ways that unwittingly undermined Weblogistan's claims of democratic participation. In this way, Weblogistan became a site of cybergovernmentality, where biopolitical security regimes disciplined and regulated populations. Analyzing online and off-line ethnography, Shakhsari provides an account of digital citizenship that raises questions about the internet's relationship to political engagement, militarism, and democracy

In A Queer New York, Jen Jack Gieseking highlights the historic significance of these spaces, mapping the political, economic, and geographic dispossession of an important, thriving community that once called certain New York neighborhoods home.Focusing on well-known neighborhoods like Greenwich Village, Park Slope, Bedford-Stuyvesant, and Crown Heights, Gieseking shows how lesbian and queer neighborhoods have folded under the capitalist influence of white, wealthy gentrifiers who have ultimately failed to make room for them.     Abstract: Aufbauend auf aktuellen empirischen Erkenntnissen entwickelt Melanie Herget Empfehlungen für zukunftsfähige Verkehrssysteme im ländlichen Raum. Anhand von problemzentrierten Interviews mit Müttern und Vätern in zwei ländlichen Regionen sowie auf Basis der Protection Motivation Theory arbeitet die Autorin Überzeugungen, Routinen und typische Bewältigungsstrategien von Familien in West- und Ost-Deutschland in Bezug auf ihre Alltagsmobilität heraus. Diese qualitativen Ergebnisse werden ergänzt durch quantitative Analysen der Studie „Mobilität in Deutschland 2008“ (25.000 Haushalte).     Abstract: Modernity, Minority, and the Public Sphere: Jews and Christians in the Middle East explores the many facets associated with the questions of modernity and minority in the context of religious communities in the Middle East by focusing on inter-communal dialogues and identity construction among the Jewish and Christian communities of the Middle East and paying special attention to the concept of space. This volume draws examples of these issues from experiences in the public sphere such as education, public performance, and political engagement discussing how religious communities were perceived and how they perceived themselves. Based on the conference proceedings from the 2013 conference at Leiden University entitled Common Ground? Changing Interpretations of Public Space in the Middle East among Jews, Christians and Muslims in the 19th and 20th Century this volume presents a variety of cases of minority engagement in Middle Eastern society.

With an emphasis on the dual meaning of "domestic, " referring to both the family home and the nation, this study traces the important trope of mobility that runs through the "American" century. Juxtaposing canonical fiction with popular, and low-budget independent films with Classical Hollywood, Leyda brings the analytic tools of American cultural and literary studies to bear on an eclectic array of primary texts as she builds a case for the significance of mobility in the study of the United States.--...

Dies geschieht im Hinblick auf ihre generationellen Eigenheiten in den Einstellungen zur DDR und Wiedervereinigung, in der alltagskulturellen Sicht auf DDR und BRD und in der Selbst- und Fremdwahrnehmung. Dabei zeigt sich, dass Aufbau-, Integrierte, Distanzierte und Wendekinder-Generation je typische Wege gefunden haben, zwischen früher und heute zu vermitteln. Im Zentrum stehen generationstypische Narrative und Erzählstrategien, mit denen die spannungsreichen Identitäten konstruiert und die DDR-geprägten Selbstbilder gegenüber den Transformationsanforderungen abgeschirmt oder anschlussfähig gehalten bzw. miteinander vermischt werden

    Abstract: Im Mainstream der Beteiligungsforschung fungiert das brasilianische Porto Alegre als ein gelungenes Modell partizipativer Kommunalpolitik. Die Bezeichnung ?Stadt der Demokratie" pragt das Image dieser Stadt, die oft in Verbindung mit dem Verfahren des Burgerhaushaltes untersucht wird. Doch Rogerio R. Mororo prasentiert ein ganz anderes Bild von Porto Alegre. Er kommt in seiner Analyse zu den Ergebnissen, dass direkte Burgerbeteiligung in Porto Alegre bislang zwar zu mehr Legitimation politischer Entscheidungsfindungen beigetragen hat, jedoch nicht zu Veranderungen bestehender Machtstrukturen und ebenso wenig zur spurbaren Minderung von Missstanden wie krassen raumlichen und sozialen Disparitaten in der lokalen Gesellschaft. Diese Tatsache wird jedoch von einem demokratischen Mythos verklart.

    Abstract: Earth now is dominated by both biogeophysical and anthropogenic processes, as represented in these two images from a simulation of aerosols. Dust (red) from the Sahara sweeps west across the Atlantic Ocean. Sea salt (blue) rises into the atmosphere from winds over the North Atlantic and from a tropical cyclone in the Indian Ocean. Organic and black carbon (green) from biomass burning is notable over the Amazon and Southeast Asia. Plumes of sulfate (white) from fossil fuel burning are particularly prominent over northeastern North America and East Asia. If present trends of dust emissions and fossil fuel burning continues in what we call the Anthropocene epoch, then we could experience high atmospheric CO2 levels leading to unusual warming rarely experienced in Earth's history. This book focuses on human influences on land, ocean, and the atmosphere, to determine if human activities are operating within or beyond the safe zones of our planet's biological, chemical, and physical systems.

The cognitive theory of ideology presented in this volume starts out by examining the current usage of the term, and looks at ideologies in three dimensions: in terms of epistemology, as forms of needs-based thinking; in terms of worldviews, as fundamental assumptions about the nature of the world and value systems; and in terms of political platforms, as driving sociopolitical concepts. In every case, the challenge is to find a way to confront basic elements of the condition humaine with the principles of empirical-rational thought.     Note: The book examines the effects of education in creating global citizens who share a world culture. This occurs within an international system that still remains decentralized, composed of independent nation-states as major actors. Prof. Kamens argues that as globalization intensifies, this system of nation-states becomes more saturated and dense with structure. Intensified globalization has produced a world society, thanks to the spread of global capitalism, education, democracy and bureaucracy. The upshot is that world culture travels quickly and produces 'recipes' for the development of an 'imagined community' that has increasing commonalities across societies. The book examines the role of education in diffusing such attitudes and models, as global citizens confront national institutions.
