    Abstract: "This volume helps us understand the transformations of terrorist organisations, and the conflicts they are involved in, by broadening the perspective on what is considered terrorist learning. Using a variety of methodological approaches and empirical data, the volume offers a look at the clandestine inner lives of groups from different continents and ideological backgrounds in order to explore from whom they learn and how, and what the outcomes are. Their internal and external interactions are examined within their socio-political contexts to illuminate how they adapt to challenges or fail to do so. Unpacking the question of 'how do terrorists learn' helps us to grasp not only changes of violent means of action but also of operational and strategic approaches and, ultimately, even transformations of the ends pursued. The chapters demonstrate that terrorist learning is not principally different from that of other human organisations. The contributors draw on conceptual frameworks of organizational learning, but also broaden the scope beyond the organizational framework to acknowledge the variety of forms of informal and decentralized learning characteristic of much contemporary terrorism. This book will be of much interest to students of terrorism studies, violent extremism, organisational studies and International Relations"--

    Abstract: "In light of an unprecedented constitutional acknowledgement of diverse epistemologies and stipulation making the protection and advancement of so-called 'ancestral knowledges' a duty of the state, this research provides an analysis of the uptake of historically subalternized knowledges by the state during the government of Rafael Correa (2007-2017), as well as of the strive for epistemic justice by peoples and nationalities organizations' in the context of struggles for social change, decolonization, and self-determination. On the basis of rich empirical material, the analysis traces state discourses and practices and mechanisms to govern 'ancestral knowledges' in the framework of the government's Knowledge Society project and delineates how leaders of peoples and nationalities' organizations struggle for the decolonization of knowledge.     Abstract: Die nun zweite, aktualisierte und erweiterte Auflage des Buches gibt einen einführenden Überblick über die Sozialpolitik und das System sozialer Sicherung in Deutschland und geht dabei insbesondere auf die Soziale Arbeit als Teilaspekt von Sozialpolitik ein. Es werden grundlegende gesellschaftliche Mechanismen der Umverteilung und sozialen Sicherung erläutert, Theorien der Sozialstaatlichkeit vorgestellt und die Geschichte der deutschen Sozialpolitik in ihren Grundzügen nachvollzogen. Im Zentrum des Bandes steht die ausführliche Darstellung der Struktur des deutschen Sozialstaates. Erörtert werden sowohl die unterschiedlichen sozialstaatlichen Säulen (Sozialversicherungen, soziale Entschädigung, soziale Hilfen, soziale Förderung) als auch verschiedene Ebenen sozialpolitischer Träger (Bund, Länder, Gemeinden, Verbände). Einen weiteren Schwerpunkt bilden jüngere sozialpolitische Entwicklungen (Transformation der Wohlfahrtsproduktion) in ihrer jeweiligen Bedeutung für die Soziale Arbeit als Disziplin und Profession
    Abstract: This second, updated and expanded edition of the book provides an introductory overview of social policy and the system of social security in Germany, focusing in particular on social work as an aspect of social policy. Basic social mechanisms of redistribution and social security are explained, theories of the welfare state are presented, and the history of German social policy is traced in its main features. The volume focuses on a detailed description of the structure of the German welfare state. The various pillars of the welfare state (social insurance, social compensation, social assistance, social promotion) are discussed, as are the various levels of social policy institutions (federal, state, local, associations).     Abstract: Deepfakes – manipulierte oder synthetische audiovisuelle Medien, meist erzeugt mit Hilfe von KI – finden in verschiedensten Kontexten Anwendung: von Politik über Pornografie und Kriminalität bis hin zu Wirtschaft, Strafverfolgung, Kunst, Satire, Bildung und Aktivismus. Die Studie bietet erstmals eine holistische Technikbewertung der gesellschaftlichen und ethischen Auswirkungen von Deepfakes in diesen Kontexten und untersucht mögliche Reaktionen auf die neue Technologie – von (supra-)nationaler Regulierung bis hin zu KI-basierter Deepfake-Detektion. Sie richtet zudem konkrete Handlungsempfehlungen etwa an Politik, Forschungsförderung und BürgerInnen. Die enthaltene interaktive Lehreinheit fördert die Medienkompetenz zu Deepfakes
    Abstract: Deepfakes—manipulated or synthetic audiovisual media, mostly created using AI—are employed in a wide range of contexts: from politics to pornography, crime, business, law enforcement, art, satire, education and activism. This study provides the first holistic technology assessment of the societal and ethical implications of deepfakes in these contexts and explores possible responses to the new technology—from (supra-)national regulation to AI-based deepfake detection. It also includes concrete recommendations for policymakers, research funding organisations and citizens, amongst others.     Abstract: The current political debates about climate change or the coronavirus pandemic reveal the fundamental controversial nature of expertise in politics and society. The contributions in this volume analyse various facets, actors and dynamics of the current conflicts about knowledge and expertise. In addition to examining the contradictions of expertise in politics, the book discusses the political consequences of its controversial nature, the forms and extent of policy advice, expert conflicts in civil society and culture, and the global dimension of expertise.     Abstract: "This book critiques the contemporary recourse to transparency in law and policy. This is, ostensibly, the information age. At the heart of the societal shift toward digitalistion, is the call for transparency and the liberalisation of information and data. Yet, with the recent rise of concerns such as 'fake news', post-truth and misinformation, where the policy responses to all these phenomena has been a petition for even greater transparency, it becomes imperative to critically reflect on what this dominant idea means, whom it serves, what the effects are of its power. In response, this book provides the first sustained critique of the concept of transparency in law and policy. It offers a concise overview of transparency in law and policy around the world, and critiques how this concept works discursively to delimit other forms of governance, other ways of knowing and other realities. It draws on the work of Michel Foucault on discourse, archaeology and genealogy, together with later Foucaultian scholars, including Gayatri Chakravorty Spivak and Judith Butler, as a theoretical framework for challenging and thinking anew the history and understanding of what has become one of the most popular buzzwords of 21st century law and governance.     Abstract: "Since the 1990s, biometric border control has attained key importance throughout Europe. Employing digital images of, for example, fingerprints, DNA, bones, faces or irises, biometric technologies use bodies to identify, categorize, and regulate individuals' cross-border movements. Based on innovative collaborative fieldwork, this book examines how biometrics are developed, put to use and negotiated in key European border sites. It analyses the disparate ways in which the technologies are applied, perceived and experienced by border control agents and others managing the cross-border flow of people, by scientists and developers engaged in making the technologies, and by migrants and NGOs attempting to manoeuvre in the complicated and often unpredictable systems of technological control. Biometric technologies are promoted by national and supra-national authorities and industry as scientifically exact and neutral methods of identification and verification, and as an infallible solution to security threats. The ethnographic case studies in this volume demonstrate, however, that the technologies are, in fact, characterized by considerable ambiguity and uncertainty, and subject to substantial subjective interpretation, translation and brokering with different implications for migrants, border guards, researchers and other actors engaged in the border world"--

    Abstract: This book addresses hegemonic ruling class masculinity and emphasized femininity within renewables organisational governance, and critiques Anglo-Celtic male privilege, as a barrier to women's leadership participation. Primarily using the Australian socio-political context, the author considers the patriarchal control of organisations and renewables governance, and argues that women-led emphasized femininity-resistance strategies can challenge the hegemonic status of ruling elites to create a leadership that is less power oriented, more collaborative and open to change.     Abstract: This book sets out a rationale for the compatibility of Islam and Feminism and shows that Islamic Feminism is a diverse and valuable lens through which to analyse religion and gender. In addition, including scholarship written in Arabic, it promotes the decolonisation of knowledge production around Islam, gender and sexuality. Islamic feminism is a field of study that has been marginalised both in contemporary Islamic discourse and in feminist discourse. This study counters this marginalisation in two ways. Firstly, it enumerates the diversity of approaches used in Islamic feminist scholarship. Secondly, it foregrounds voices that are often neglected in discussions of Islam, gender and sexuality by highlighting and contrasting the work of two key scholars: Kecia Ali based in the USA and Olfa Youssef based in Tunisia. The book suggests that in addition to geo-political positioning, language, as a prior-text', also influences an individual's personal interpretation of Islamic feminism. This comparison, therefore, enables broader issues to be dissected, such as the interrelationships between life experiences, strategies of resistance to patriarchal and other forms of oppression, and the production of knowledge. This is a unique study of Islamic Feminism that will be of great use to any scholar of Religion and Gender, Islamic Studies, Gender Studies and the Sociology of Religion

    Abstract: Faced with a new housing problem, cities are becoming more important in solving it, and a communalisation of housing policy can be observed. On the basis of case studies from 14 cities, this book comparatively analyses the limits and varieties of local housing policy in Germany and the opportunities it offers.     Abstract: Wie gehen wir als Gesellschaft mit zukünftigen Gefahren um? Der Begriff des Risikos wird in der Politikformulierung zunehmend wichtig. Dahinter kann die Idee der Risikogovernance stehen: Sie beschreibt die Analyse und Bewertung sowie das Management von Risiken als einen kontinuierlichen, gesellschaftlichen Prozess. Eine solche Idee der Risikogovernance erlaubt es, politisches Handeln normativ auf Katastrophenvorsorge anstelle von Katastrophenbewältigung auszurichten. Die Arbeit untersucht anhand der Übersetzung dreier Policys von der internationalen auf die nationale Ebene – der EU-Hochwasserrisikomanagementrichtline, der Methode für die Risikoanalyse im Bevölkerungsschutz und des Sendai Framework for Disaster Risk Reduction –, ob dieses Potential von Risikogovernance genutzt wird und inwieweit in diesem Prozess Verantwortung vom Staat an die Bürger übertragen wird. Sie arbeitet schließlich mehrere Faktoren heraus, die einem Normwandel hin zu mehr Katastrophenvorsorge entgegenstehen
    Abstract: How do we as a society cope with future hazards? In an increasing number of German policy areas, ‘risk’ is a key term in important policy documents. Risk may then give rise to the idea of risk governance, which implies the analysis, assessment and management of risks in a sustained societal process. This conceptualisation of risk governance allows us to normatively focus political action on disaster prevention instead of on coping with disasters after they have occurred. This study analyses policy translation from an international to a national level in terms of the EU flood risk management directive, the approach to risk analysis used by the German Federal Agency for civil protection and the Sendai Framework for Disaster Risk Reduction to find out if the potential of risk governance is being exploited and how extensively responsibility is being transferred from the state to citizens in this process. Finally, the author concludes that several important factors hinder a normative shift towards disaster prevention

    Abstract: Inwiefern erlauben Theorien des Politischen eine adäquate Thematisierung der mit dem Politischen möglicherweise verbundenen Gefährdungen? Die Autorin untersucht nicht das emanzipative Potential des Politischen, sondern seine Kehrseite. Sie thematisiert konkrete Gefahren, die politisch Tätigen begegnen können. Ausgehend von dem Prekaritätskonzept in der Soziologie und der MayDay-Bewegung werden mit Judith Butler Ideen der Souveränität und Autonomie verabschiedet. Die Monografie bietet eine Systematisierung der Verständnisweisen „des Politischen“. Politische Prekarität wird in den Vorschlägen von Hannah Arendt, Jacques Rancière und Alain Badiou nachgezeichnet. Diese Theorien nehmen in vielen Hinsichten ein komplementäres Verhältnis ein und verweisen wechselseitig auf ihre jeweiligen theoretischen Defizite. Indem eine produktive Ergänzung dieser Denkansätze entwickelt wird, gelingt ein Vorschlag zur Neubestimmung des Prekären im Feld des Politischen
    Abstract: To what extent can political theories adequately address the dangers that may accompany the political? This monograph is less concerned with the emancipative potential of the political, but rather with its downsides. Drawing on the concept of precarity, as defined in sociology and the May Day movement, it calls into question the ideas of sovereignty and autonomy using the theories of Judith Butler. The book systematises the controversy on what ‘the political’ is. Subsequently, it defines ‘political precarity’ in accordance with the ideas of Hannah Arendt, Jacques Rancière and Alain Badiou. These theories are complementary and conflicting in several respects and they mutually point out each other’s weaknesses. However, Hollendung identifies an innovative understanding of the precarious by intertwining these ideas

    Abstract: All too often, research methods and working techniques are treated separately from each other—but (prospective) political or social scientists have to master both to make a project a success.     Abstract: "The volume provides a field-analytical methodology for researching knowledge based sociopolitical processes of transnationalization. Drawing on the seminal work by Pierre Bourdieu, we apply concepts of practice, habitus, and field to phenomena such as cross-national social trajectories, international procedures of evaluation, standardization and certification or supranational political structures. These transnational phenomena form part of general political struggles that legitimate social relationships in and beyond the nation state. Part 1 on "Methodological Foundations" discusses the consequences of Bourdieu's epistemology and methodology for theorizing and investigating transnational phenomena. The contributions show the import of field-theoretical concepts for post-national insights. Part 2 on "Investigating Political Fields" presents exemplary case studies in diverse research areas such as colonial imperialism, international academic rankings, European policy fields, and local school policy. While focusing on their research objects, the contributions also give an insight into the mechanisms involved in processes of transnationalization.     Abstract: "The Kalahandi district in the state of Odisha in Eastern India is regarded as an iconic region of underdevelopment and is often perceived to be the 'Somalia' of the country. It is also the site of a large number of governmental interventions. This book focuses on governance in the state of Odisha and provides an ethnographic account of the changing forms of governmental actions in the development sector. It analyses the implementation of WORLP (Western Orissa Rural Livelihoods Project), a new generation watershed-based development project in Kalahandi district in Odish. It shows the morphings of the forms of the state on the ground and the ways in which it is perceived by the agents and objects of statist actions. Arguing that the changes in the institutions and practices of the state in India over the last three decades are better understood through the conceptualisation of state-fabrication, rather than of state-formation, the author describes five governmental tactics related to emergent modes of governmental action in the context of watershed development in Kalahandi . The book identifies an increasing convergence in the everyday practices of governmental and non-governmental organisations, and the growth of 'the social' as a terrain and object of governmental action as two important effects of the process of deployment of these tactics. Providing an alternative analysis of state and politics in India, this book adds to the literature surrounding the everyday state by illuminating recent changes in state-society relations. It will be of interest to academics in the field of Political Science, Public Policy, Development Studies, Social Anthropology/Sociology and South Asian studies

    Abstract: Bislang sind die Ziele bzw. die Schwerpunkte der Jugendpolitik in der DDR und deren praktische Auswirkungen unzureichend untersucht. Steffi Lehmann setzt in ihrer Studie die ideologischen Ansprüche der SED und die realen Auswirkungen der Jugendpolitik sowie den Umgang der Staatsmacht mit – vermeintlich – oppositionellen Jugendlichen von 1949 bis 1989/90 erstmals in einen Kontext. Sie untersucht, aufgegliedert in vier zeitliche Phasen, einerseits den Anspruch der offiziellen Jugendpolitik mit Blick auf Ziele, sozialistische Erziehungsdoktrin und Funktionen der FDJ, andererseits die tatsächlichen Verhältnisse anhand der Einstellung zur FDJ, des privaten Raums und der Freizeitgestaltung, Konformitätszwang und Anpassung sowie Nonkonformismus. Ihr Ergebnis: Die meisten Jugendlichen verinnerlichten, die von der SED diktierten Phrasen im öffentlichen Raum, etwa in der Schule oder im Betrieb, wiederzugeben; im Privatleben und in der Freizeit jedoch stieß der erzieherische Einfluss an seine Grenzen.

    Abstract: This volume shows how infrastructures and daily life shape each other. Power grids, roads and broadband make modern lifestyles possible – at the same time, their design and day-to-day operation depends on what people do at home and at work. This volume investigates the entanglement of supply and demand. It explains how standards and 'normal' ways of living have changed over time and how infrastructures have changed with them. This is the first book to examine the interdependence between infrastructures and the practices of daily life. It offers an analysis of how new technologies, lifestyles and standards become normalised and fall out of use. It brings together diverse disciplines – history, sociology, science studies – to develop social theories and accounts of how infrastructures and practices constitute each other at different scales and over time. It shows how networks and demands are steered and shaped, and how social and political visions are woven into infrastructures, past, present and future.
