Abstract: "Wake Up, This Is Joburg is a collaboration between photographer Mark Lewis and writer Tanya Zack. Originally published from 2014-2019 as ten separate photobooks by Fourthwall Books in South Africa, the collection builds a portrait of Johannesburg through individual stories and accompanying photographs. Ranging from butchers removing meat from cow heads in a parking garage meat market to underground gold miners hauling rock by hand from abandoned shafts under the city, these stories contribute to ethnographic studies of the city by showing the lived experience of its residents. At its heart, this project investigates how people are improvising to repurpose land and buildings, especially in Johannesburg's inner city. It brings attention to a vast informal economy, as well as widespread reconstruction as crumbling buildings are occupied, burned, stripped of parts, and rebuilt to serve the needs of the residents."

Abstract: In Climatic Media, Yuriko Furuhata traces climate engineering from the early twentieth century to the present, emphasizing the legacies of Japan's empire building and its Cold War alliance with the United States. Furuhata boldly expands the scope of media studies to consider technologies that chemically "condition" Earth's atmosphere and socially "condition" the conduct of people, focusing on the attempts to monitor and modify indoor and outdoor atmospheres by Japanese scientists, technicians, architects, and artists in conjunction with their American counterparts. She charts the geopolitical contexts of what she calls climatic media by examining a range of technologies such as cloud seeding and artificial snowflakes, digital computing used for weather forecasting and weather control, cybernetics for urban planning and policing, Nakaya Fujiko's fog sculpture, and the architectural experiments of Tange Lab and the Metabolists, who sought to design climate-controlled capsule housing and domed cities. Furuhata's transpacific analysis offers a novel take on the elemental conditions of media and climate change.

Abstract: In Listening in the Afterlife of Data, David Cecchetto theorizes sound, communication, and data by analyzing them in the contexts of the practical workings of specific technologies, situations, and artworks. In a time he calls the afterlife of data-the cultural context in which data's hegemony persists even in the absence of any belief in its validity-Cecchetto shows how data is repositioned as the latest in a long line of concepts that are at once constitutive of communication and suggestive of its limits. Cecchetto points to the failures and excesses of communication by focusing on the power of listening-whether through wearable technology, internet-based artwork, or the ways in which computers process sound-to pragmatically comprehend the representational excesses that data produces. Writing at a cultural moment in which data has never been more ubiquitous or less convincing, Cecchetto elucidates the paradoxes that are constitutive of computation and communication more broadly, demonstrating that data is never quite what it seems.

Abstract: "Our daily dealings with media are characterized by a remarkable turn to the tactile. In practically all places, at practically all times, we touch and handle media devices. Conversely, these devices touch and scan us-and increasingly so: from pressure sensors in car seats and motion detectors in front of automatic doors to body scanners, smart phones, and fitness trackers. To this development, Horn, or The Counterside of Media responds by considering a substance and surface that is an exemplary "medium." Horn stands for a natural substance but also an artificial object. It constitutes a boundary between interior and exterior, while functioning as decoration and ornament, shield and tool. From Rebekka Horn, Salvador Dali̹, and William Kentridge to Sigmund Freud, Walter Benjamin and Marshall McLuhan, this book enters into a creative dialogue with artists, scientists, and media philosophers that have dealt with animal horns, memory cones, musical instruments, and rhinoceroses. Presenting their respective contributions in a lavishly illustrated "fictitious exhibition," it unfolds a critical panorama of our tactile culture in which the counterside of media is clearly recognized and respected"-

Abstract: "Saturation shows how underwater points of view have much to teach us about the nature of objectivity, teaching us to look for the ways that a terrestrial bias appears in the ways we speak about and orient to the world. The volume takes the ocean as a vital starting place from which to develop a method of milieu-specific analysis, calling attention to the differences between perceptual environments and how we think within and through them as embodied observers. Through discussions of science fiction literature and visual media, Saturation shows that attending to the ocean is just the beginning of developing a broader sensitivity to the role of milieu in the fields of media studies, literary studies, science and technology studies, and the environmental humanities. The ocean is not only a medium; the ocean is a vital milieu from which to reconsider what we have taken for granted about the nature of mediation, objectivity, and metaphor. By developing a method of oceanic displacement-and submerging media concepts in the ocean-this book is a science fictional exercise in speculation, exploring how we might think outside of our terrestrial habits by seeing things through the opacity of seawater"--

Abstract: In The Politics of Decolonial Investigations Walter D. Mignolo provides a sweeping examination of how coloniality has operated around the world in its myriad forms from the sixteenth century to the twenty-first. Decolonial border thinking allows Mignolo to outline how the combination of the self-fashioned narratives of Western civilization and the hegemony of Eurocentric thought served to eradicate all knowledges in non-European languages and praxes of living and being. Mignolo also traces the geopolitical origins of racialized and gendered classifications, modernity, globalization, and cosmopolitanism, placing them all within the framework of coloniality. Drawing on the work of theorists and decolonial practitioners from the Global South and the Global East, Mignolo shows how coloniality has provoked the emergence of decolonial politics initiated by delinking from all forms of Western knowledge and subjectivities. The urgent task, Mignolo stresses, is the epistemic reconstitution of categories of thought and praxes of living destituted in the very process of building Western civilization and the idea of modernity. The overcoming of the long-lasting hegemony of the West and its distorted legacies is already underway in all areas of human existence. Mignolo underscores the relevance of the politics of decolonial investigations, in and outside the academy, to liberate ourselves from canonized knowledge, ways of knowing, and praxes of living

Abstract: "Counterlife demonstrates that scholarship on slavery in the Americas has its imaginative roots in the emergence of sociology/social theory in the 1950s as well as aesthetic movements (e.g., naturalism and modernism) that flourished in the early twentieth century. Debates between social scientists, artists, and politicians about mass culture, modern urban space, and socialization amplify slavery studies' preoccupation with political insurgency and resistance. This book analyzes the kinds of descriptions of social space, power, and personality type that became pivotal in the early sociology and psychology of slavery studies"--
