    Kurzfassung: This book offers a synthesis of social science and evolutionary approaches to the study of intergenerational relations, using biological, psychological and sociological factors to develop a single framework for understanding why kin help one another across generations. With attention to both biological family relations as well as in-law and step-relations, it provides an overview of existing studies centred on intergenerational relations – particularly grandparenting – that incorporate social science and evolutionary family theories. This evolutionary social science approach to intergenerational family relations goes well beyond the traditional nature versus nurture distinction. As such, it will appeal to scholars across a range of disciplines with interests in relations of kinship, the lifecourse and the sociology of the family.

    Kurzfassung: "In Asia, there are a growing number of gigantic megalopolises, accompanied by a series of speculative and extravagant megaprojects. Amid the fast-paced urban and development challenges, many Asian developing countries have started to search for successful Asian development models. South Korea and its capital city Seoul are frequently referenced models. South Koreas "economic miracle" of the late twentieth century, however, has been mostly studied through an economic policy lens. This book revisits the development of South Korea by looking at its urban dimension and exploring the city of Seoul as a developmental megaproject. Offering an alternative to the focus on economic policies when it comes to explaining South Koreas development successes, Joo looks at the urbanization that took place under the guidance of the strong developmental state. She provides empirical evidence of the "property state" at work, both complementing and supporting the developmental state. She also analyses why and how Seoul was able to emerge as an important Asian global city and a global front-runner in terms of ambitious and pioneering urban investments, despite its relatively recent history marked by massive slums and urban poverty. This book provides an analytical framework for studying South Koreas modern development under capitalism, as a precursor to the East Asian urbanism and development.     Kurzfassung: Despite many scholars noting the interdisciplinary approach of Aboriginal knowledge production as a methodology within a broad range of subjects - including quantum mathematics, biodiversity, sociology and the humanities - the academic study of Indigenous knowledge and people is struggling to become interdisciplinary in its approach and move beyond its current label of 'Indigenous Studies'. Indigenous Knowledge Production specifically demonstrates the use of autobiographical ethnicity as a methodological approach, where the writer draws on lived experience and ethnic background towards creative and academic writing. Indeed, in this insightful volume, Marcus Woolombi Waters investigates the historical connection and continuity that have led to the present state of hostility witnessed in race relations around the world; seeking to further one's understanding of the motives and methods that have led to a rise in white supremacy associated with ultra-conservatism.     Kurzfassung: "The book examines some of the dilemmas surrounding Europe's open borders, migrations, and identities through the prism of the Roma - Europe's most dispersed and socially marginalised population. The volume challenges some of the myths surrounding the Roma as a 'problem population', and places the focus instead on the context of European policy and identity debates. It comes to the conclusion that the migration of Roma and the constitution of their communities is shaped by European policy as much as and often more so than by the cultural traits of the Roma themselves. The chapters compare case studies of Roma migrants in Spain, Italy, France, and Britain, and the impact of migration on the origin communities in Romania.     Kurzfassung: "Using detailed examples from Finland, Hungary, Canada and the UK, this book explores relationships between the racialization and discrimination experienced by heterogeneous European Roma populations, and the processes of everyday bordering embedded in state policies and media discourses. In the context of the long histories of discrimination experienced by Roma people across Europe, the chapters engage with changing EU policies, including the recent tensions between inter-European de-bordering and the selective immigration policies introduced as different states react to EU free movement. Employing an intersectional analysis, the authors capture the perspectives of differentially situated people and associated discourses to examine the continuing racism experienced by European Roma citizens in their interaction with bordering technologies. They examine the homogenizing ‘racial othering’ and construction of Roma as a ‘criminal category’ that co-exists with the differentiations made between ‘indigenous’ and ‘migrant’ Roma central to dominant bordering discourses and the contestations of different Roma populations. Chapters focus on Roma activism and the media, the exclusion of Roma residents via urban regeneration and welfare provision, and powerful media and political discourses about Roma populations in different national and transnational contexts.     Kurzfassung: Involuntary migration occurs when there has been, or will be, a catastrophic change in people's environment and they have little or no choice but to relocate. Causes range from natural disasters to sociopolitical upheaval (war, revolution, pogrom) and even to planned changes (dams, atomic experimentation, urban renewal). Although there are excellent studies of specific instances of forced migration, this book is the first to address the broad scope of issues and the wide variety of contexts in which migration and resettlement schemes have occurred. The authors investigate the responses of dislocated people facing dislocation and resettlement and ask specifically: What are the common stresses of dislocation and resettlement? What are the patterns of individual and group reactions and strategies as people respond to the stresses and opportunities of relocation? What significant similarities and differences exist among situations of involuntary migration and how do these pressures relate to those faced by people who move voluntarily?

    Kurzfassung: Wir leben in einer verflochtenen und dennoch geteilten Welt: Asymmetrien, Grenzziehungen und Politiken der Differenz bringen gleichzeitig die Trennlinien und den gemeinsamen Kontext für globales Zusammenleben hervor. Diese Ambivalenz schlägt sich auch in der deutschen Auswärtigen Kulturpolitik nieder, die sich ursprünglich an den Ordnungen des Nationalen orientiert hat, seit der Jahrtausendwende aber zunehmend auch geopolitische Bruchlinien und Konflikte als ihre Arbeitsfelder begreift. Basierend auf Feldforschungen in Berlin, Ramallah, Sarajevo, Tel Aviv und Jerusalem zeichnet Jens Adam Formierungs- und Übersetzungsprozesse einer neuen Policy nach. Er eröffnet damit Einblicke in translokale Wissens- und Handlungsräume, in denen sich Ordnungen des Nationalen und Potenziale der Kosmopolitisierung kreuzen. Ausgezeichnet mit dem ifa-Forschungspreis Auswärtige Kulturpolitik 2016.

    Kurzfassung: Left-wing intellectuals in Britain and the US had long repudiated the Soviet regime. Why was the collapse of the Eastern Bloc experienced as a shock that destabilised their identities and political allegiances then? What happened to a collective project that had started out to formulate a socialist vision different from both really existing socialism and social democracy? This study endeavours to answer both questions, focusing on generational networks rather than individuals and investigating political academic journals after 1989 to paint the picture of a Left deeply troubled by the triumph of a capitalism unfettered by any counter-force.

    Kurzfassung: Im Israel-Palästina-Konflikt spielen Grenzziehungen nicht nur auf territorialer Ebene eine Rolle, sondern sie (be-)treffen genauso die (Über-)Lebenspraktiken der Menschen vor Ort. Der Konflikt ist damit ein Paradebeispiel für gegenläufige Erinnerungskonstruktionen entlang einseitig definierter Grenzen. Kulturelle Projekte wie beispielsweise das (mittlerweile geschlossene) »Cinema Jenin« und das »Freedom Theatre« geben Aufschluss über Widersprüche und Dynamiken von (gewaltfreiem) Widerstand, Gegen-Erzählungen und Dialog. Anne Rohrbach zeigt, wie kulturelle Projekte Frei-Räume in einer fragmentierten Gesellschaft öffnen und einen wichtigen Beitrag dazu leisten können, translokale Erinnerungs- und Widerstandsräume zu etablieren.

    Kurzfassung: Wie erlernen Kinder Emotionen und welche Rolle spielt dabei ihre soziale und kulturelle Umwelt? Gabriel Scheidecker untersucht die - bisher primär in westlichen Kontexten erforschte - Sozialisation von Emotionen erstmals in Madagaskar. Auf der Basis einer 15-monatigen Feldforschung in einer ländlichen Region der Insel beschreibt er detailliert die emotionalen Erfahrungen von Kindern in Verbindung mit den Erziehungsidealen und -praktiken ihrer Bezugspersonen. Im Fokus steht die Ausbildung einer kulturspezifischen moralischen Furcht gegenüber den Eltern sowie die feine Ausdifferenzierung von Wut. Damit erweitert der Band die Forschung zur Emotionssozialisation um eine kulturanthropologische Perspektive

Zentral ist dabei die Kontextualisierung mikrologischer Befunde mit makrostrukturellen Dimensionen dieses Handelns unterschiedlichster Akteur_innen - die Beispiele reichen vom 3D-Druck im palästinensischen Flüchtlingscamp über urbane Imkerei in Deutschland bis hin zum digitalen Selbstversuch
    Kurzfassung: 'Do it yourself'? - DIY is a practice with shifting conjunctures and slogans. This volume attempts to provide a critical revision of the phenomenon, and as such, is at odds with the standard (marketable) texts, which often amount to nothing more than praise and instructions. In an empirical fashion, the authors here deal with the interplay between the discourses and practices of DIY. Central to this is the contextualization of the micro-logical findings with the macro-structural dimensions of these activities, from the most diverse individuals - the examples range from 3D-printing in Palestinian refugee camps to urban beekeeping in Germany, right up to bicycle building in Budapest

    Kurzfassung: Middlebrow Cinema challenges an often uninterrogated hostility to middlebrow culture that frequently dismisses it as conservative, which it often is not, and feminized or middle-class, which it often is. The volume defines the term relationally against shifting concepts of 'high' and 'low', and considers its deployment in connection with text, audience and institution. In exploring the concept of the middlebrow, this book recovers films that were widely meaningful to contemporary audiences, yet sometimes overlooked by critics interested in popular and arthouse extremes. It also addresses the question of socially-mobile audiences, who might express their aspirations through film-watching; and traces the cultural consequences of the movement of films across borders and between institutions. The first study of its kind, the volume comprises 11 original essays that test the purchase of the term 'middlebrow' across cultures, including those of Europe, Asia and the Americas, from the 1930s to the present day. However, the fact that this interplay of identities also influences social space has so far been overlooked. 'As one calls into the forest, so it will resound' - this familiar German saying proves to be an unreliable maxim: that which townsfolk might call into 'their' neighborhood only echoes back off its façades in a fragmentary fashion, as a wish, idealization or hope. Andreas Thiesen sketches out concepts of reflexive urban development, reveals errors in planning and renegotiates the 'problem of participation', which even today is yet to be resolved

But what makes special exhibitions so attractive? And what distinguishes the audiences of special exhibitions from those of permanent exhibitions? Nora Wegner answers these questions by means of a comprehensive comparative study of various museums. She develops a typology of exhibition-goers, investigates success factors for special exhibitions, and in addition, derives practical advice for museum work targeted at specific groups, which will do justice to the tensions between the exhibitions, and also win audiences for permanent exhibitions

Was aber macht Sonderausstellungen so attraktiv? Und was unterscheidet das Publikum der Sonder- von dem der Dauerausstellungen?Nora Wegner beantwortet diese Fragen mittels einer umfassenden Vergleichsstudie an verschiedenen Museen. So versuchte die Rassenbiologie noch bis in die 1980er Jahre, durch aufwendige anthropologische Vermessungen genetische Differenzen zwischen Rassen und Sozialschichten zu bestimmen. Ziel war es, eine vermeintlich »natürliche« Sozialordnung zu restaurieren, welche die Mittelschicht gegen »minderwertige« Rassen und Sozialschichten zu sichern vermochte.Thomas Etzemüllers Gesellschaftsanalyse zeigt: Die Rassenanthropologie ist ein ideales Lehrstück dafür, wie eine Weltanschauung mit wissenschaftlichen Methoden objektiviert werden konnte
    Kurzfassung: In the 19th Century, industrialization unleashed fears of a biological and social disintegration of modern societies; fears which did not simply disappear in the face of science. Thus, right up to the 1980s, racial biology attempted to determine genetic differences between races and social classes through laborious anthropological measurements. The goal was to restore a supposedly »natural« social order which would be able to safeguard the middle classes against the »inferior« races and social classes. Thomas Etzemüllers societal analysis shows that racial anthropology is an ideal educational example of how a particular worldview can be objectified with scientific methods

    Kurzfassung: Abstoßung und Anreiz, Verbieten und Verschweigen, Thematisierung und Dethematisierung - dem Tabu wohnen Ambivalenzen inne, die auf besondere Weise für historische Beobachtungen produktiv gemacht werden können. Seit der kreativen Neuentdeckung durch Freud steht das Tabu im Zeichen einer Beobachtung eigener Kultur und zielt auf die Entdeckung von verborgenen gesellschaftlichen Vektoren. Die Beiträge des Bandes gehen den Spuren dieser produktiven Ambivalenz in Texten und Artefakten vergangener und gegenwärtiger Verhältnisse nach. Dabei stehen die politischen ebenso wie die ästhetischen und epistemischen Dimensionen des Tabus im Mittelpunkt. Contributions examine diverse ways in which material and immaterial heritage has been articulated, negotiated and manipulated since the nineteenth century. The major question addressed here is how modern Balkan nations have voiced claims about their past by establishing 'proof' of a long historical presence on their territories in order to legitimise national political narratives. Focusing on claims constructed in relation to tangible evidence of past presence, especially architecture and townscape, the contributors reveal the rich relations between material and immaterial conceptions of heritage. This comparative take on Balkan public uses of the past also reveals many common trends in social and political practices, ideas and fixations embedded in public and collective memories. Balkan Heritages revisits some general truths about the Balkans as a region and a category, in scholarship and in politics.     Kurzfassung: "The History of Migration in Europe belies several myths by arguing, for example, that immobility has not been the "normal" condition of people before the modern era. Migration (far from being an income-maximizing choice taken by lone individuals) is often a household strategy, and local wages benefit from migration. This book shows how ssuccesses arise when governments liberalize and accompany the international movements of people with appropriate legislation, while failures take place when the legislation enacted is insufficient, belated or ill shaped. The first part of this book addresses mainly methodological issues. Past and present migration is basically defined as a cross-cultural movement; cultural boundaries need prolonged residence and active integrationist policies to allow cross-fertilization of cultures among migrants and non-migrants. The second section collects chapters that examine the role of public bodies with reference to migratory movements, depicting a series of successes and failures in the migration policies through examples drawn from the European Union or single countries. The third section deals with challenges immigrants face once they have settled in their new countries: Do immigrants seek "integration" in their host culture? Through which channels is such integration achieved, and what roles are played by citizenship and political participation? What is the "identity" of migrants and their children born in the host countries? This text's originality stems from the fact that it explains the complex nature of migratory movements by incorporating a variety of perspectives and using a multi-disciplinary approach, including economic, political and sociological contributions"--

    Kurzfassung: Warum bauen Menschen zu Dingen eine Beziehung auf? Einen Beitrag zur Klärung dieser Frage bietet Anamaria Depners ethnologische Betrachtung des Umzugsprozesses ins Altenheim. Hierbei überrascht der Umgang mit den eigenen Sachen - nicht zuletzt, weil er mitunter destruktiv ist. Die Analyse der Beobachtungen zum situativen Bedeutungswechsel der Dinge und der Emotionen, die Menschen ihnen entgegenbringen, bilden die Grundlage für eine allgemeine Objekttheorie, die zeigt: Der Mensch-Ding-Beziehung liegt weniger die sogenannte Agency der Dinge zu Grunde als vielmehr ihre physisch-materielle Präsenz.Die Untersuchung liefert ein empirisch fundiertes, theoretisches Modell für die Material Culture Studies sowie unterschiedliche Anknüpfungspunkte für gerontologische Forschung

    Kurzfassung: Es ist eine irrige Vorstellung der Moderne, dass Spiel und Wissenschaft nichts miteinander zu tun hätten. Dieser Band stellt das Spiel als einen zentralen Agenten von Wissensproduktion und Wissenschaftskultur vor und zeigt damit, dass Erkenntnis konstitutiv auf Spiel angewiesen ist. Während die zumeist phänomenologisch oder psycho-soziologisch ausgerichtete Literatur zum Spiel aus der Beobachterperspektive operiert, geht die hier gebotene Darstellung von der performativen Haltung des Teilnehmers aus. Spiel wird so nachvollziehbar als eine Bewegung im Zwischen, als eine Begegnung, die spekulative Brücken zwischen dem Erkennenden selbst und den Objekten der Erkenntnis schlagen kann. Die Frage nach dem Verhältnis von Spiel und Erkenntnis führt daher ins Zentrum des modernen Selbstverständnisses.U.a. mit Beiträgen von Marcel Beyer, Hartmut Böhme, Karl Ludwig Pfeiffer, Hans Ulrich Reck und Christoph Wulf
