Diese »extranjeros«, deren Ausweisung zwar oft angeordnet, aber selten praktiziert wurde, stehen im Zentrum der Studie. Martin Biersack geht dem widersprüchlichen und oft spannungsreichen Verhältnis von »Spaniern« und »Ausländern«, Norm und Praxis, Duldung und Ausweisung nach und kann so erklären, wie und warum die Integration nichtspanischer Immigranten in die vormoderne koloniale Gesellschaft gelang, obwohl sie formal von dieser ausgeschlossen waren.

    Abstract: "Konkurrenz" ist ein Schlüsselwort (post)moderner Gesellschaften. Doch waren Agonalität und Wettbewerb auch in der Frühen Neuzeit allgegenwärtig, in Form von Rangkonflikten, Ehrenhändeln, der Konkurrenz zwischen den Konfessionen, dem Ringen um Ressourcen oder der Rivalität von Kolonialmächten. Trotzdem war agonale Konkurrenz bis zum 18. Jahrhundert moralisch anrüchig. Zwischen der Dynamik von Konkurrenzbeziehungen und ihrer gerade den Aspekt des Wettkampfs oft ausblendenden Wahrnehmung auf Seiten der Akteure bestand ein Spannungsbogen. Ihm widmen sich die in diesem Band dokumentierten Beiträge der 13. Arbeitstagung der AG Frühe Neuzeit im Verband der Historiker und Historikerinnen Deutschlands, die im September 2019 in Rostock stattfand. Sie befassen sich damit, wie in vormodernen Gesellschaften Konstellationen der Rivalität und des Wettbewerbs bewertet wurden, wie Konkurrenz mehr oder weniger erfolgreich eingehegt wurde, welche Dynamiken sie in Gang setzte und auf welchen Feldern sie sich teils verdeckt, teils offen entfalten konnte. In dieser Perspektive stellt die Beschäftigung mit Konkurrenz einen Schlüssel zum Verständnis der Normen- und Werteordnung der Frühen Neuzeit dar.

Each was designed to capture current developments in these interrelated research areas and also to help elide boundaries between ?science-based? and ?humanities-based? approaches, and between those focused on written communication (especially its content) and those interested in broader modes of communication. Contributions are arranged thematically in three groups: the first concerns primarily non-written communication, the second mainly written communication, and the third blurs this somewhat arbitrary distinction.

    Abstract: In the early years of the Cold War, the United States mounted expansive public diplomacy programs in the Global South, including initiatives with the recently partitioned states of India and Pakistan. U.S. operations in these two countries became the second- and fourth-largest in the world, creating migration links that resulted in the emergence of American universities, such as the University of Houston, as immigration hubs for the highly selective, student-led South Asian migration stream starting in the 1950s. By the late twentieth century, Houston's South Asian community had become one of the most prosperous in the metropolitan area and one of the largest in the country. Mining archives and using new oral histories, Uzma Quraishi traces this pioneering community from its midcentury roots to the early twenty-first century, arguing that South Asian immigrants appealed to class conformity and endorsed the model minority myth to navigate the complexities of a shifting Sunbelt South.

    Abstract: Cities of Strangers illuminates life in European towns and cities as it was for the settled, and for the 'strangers' or newcomers who joined them between 1000 and 1500. Some city-states enjoyed considerable autonomy which allowed them to legislate on how newcomers might settle and become citizens in support of a common good. Such communities invited bankers, merchants, physicians, notaries and judges to settle and help produce good urban living. Dynastic rulers also shaped immigration, often inviting groups from afar to settle and help their cities flourish. All cities accommodated a great deal of difference - of language, religion, occupation - in shared spaces, regulated by law. But when, from around 1350, plague began regularly to occur within European cities, this benign cycle began to break down. High mortality rates led eventually to demographic crises and, as a result, less tolerant and more authoritarian attitudes emerged, resulting in violent expulsions of even long-settled groups. Tracing the development of urban institutions and using a wide range of sources from across Europe, Miri Rubin recreates a complex picture of urban life for settled and migrant communities over

    Abstract: "Sacred Matter: Animacy and Authority in the Americas examines animism in Pre-Columbian America, focusing on how objects and places played central social roles in practices that expressed and sanctified political authority in the Andes, Amazon, and Mesoamerica. Pre-Columbian peoples staked claims to their authority when they animated matter by giving life to grandiose buildings, speaking with deified boulders, and killing valued objects. Likewise, things and places often animated people by demanding labor, care, and nourishment. In these practices of animation, things were cast as active subjects, agents of political change, and representatives of communities. People were positioned according to specific social roles and stations: workers, worshippers, revolutionaries, tribute payers, or authorities. Such practices manifested political visions of social order by defining relationships between people, things, and the environment. Contributors to this volume present a range of perspectives (archaeological, art historical, ethnohistorical, and linguistic) to shed light on how Pre-Columbian social authority was claimed and sanctified in practices of transformation and transubstantiation-that is, practices that birthed, converted, or destroyed certain objects and places, as well as the social and natural order from which these things were said to emerge"--

    Abstract: Als in den 1960er Jahren die »Hippies« aufkamen, erkannten darin manche eine »neue Jugendbewegung«. Tatsächlich fanden sich im alternativen Milieu der 1970er und 1980er Jahre nicht wenige Praktiken, politische Ideen und habituelle Muster, die an die Lebensreformbewegung der Jahrhundertwende erinnerten: freie Sexualität und Freikörperkultur, Siedlung auf dem Lande, alternative Haartracht und Bekleidung, Kritik der modernen Gesellschaft, Streben nach Gemeinschaft, politischer Radikalismus. Zugleich unterschieden sich die Kontexte dieser Kritik: Urbanisierung und industrielle Moderne auf der einen, postindustrieller und, auf der kulturellen Ebene, postmoderner »Strukturbruch« auf der anderen Seite. Die Beiträgerinnen und Beiträger untersuchen zum einen, inwieweit sich diese Phänomene ähneln oder unterscheiden, und zum anderen fragen sie nach den Verbindungslinien personeller oder institutioneller Art sowie den Rezeptionsmustern der Lebensreform im Alternativmilieu. When the “hippies” emerged in the 1960s, contemporary observers spoke of a “new youth movement”, relating them to the Jugendbewegung of the early 20th century. In fact, there were quite a few practices, political ideas, and habitual patterns in the alternative milieu of the 1970s and 1980s, which seemed to be familiar from the Lebensreform (life reform) movement of the turn of the century: free sexuality and nudism, settlement in the countryside, alternative hairstyles and clothing, criticism of modern society, striving for community, and political radicalism. At the same time, the contexts of this critique differed: urbanization and industrial modernity on the one hand, postindustrial and, on the cultural level, postmodern “structural break” on the other. The volume examines the extent to which the two phenomena were similar, but also looks at differences, personal or institutional links and patterns of reception.

    Abstract: Die erste Frauenbewegung leitete wichtige Schritte zur Emanzipation in Europa ein, blieb aber nicht in der kulturellen Erinnerung verankert. Denn als sich die zweite Frauenbewegung in den 1970er- Jahren Gehör verschaffte, verstand sie sich weitgehend als neue Bewegung ohne eigenen Vorläufer. Der Band untersucht die Bilder der Geschichte, die die Frauenbewegungen entwickelten oder vernachlässigten, und die Traditionsverluste, die durch die Diktaturen des 20. Jahrhunderts verursacht wurden.

    Abstract: Although "entanglement" has become a keyword in recent German history scholarship, entangled studies of the postwar era have largely limited their scope to politics and economics across the two Germanys while giving short shrift to social and cultural phenomena like gender. At the same time, historians of gender in Germany have tended to treat East and West Germany in isolation, with little attention paid to intersections and interrelationships between the two countries.     Abstract: “Generation” has become a central concept of cultural, historical and social studies. This book analyses how this concept is currently used and how it relates to memory and constructions of historical meaning from educational, historical, legal and political perspectives. Attempts to compare different national generations or to elaborate boundary-crossing, transnational generations still constitute an exception. In trying to fill this gap, this collection of essays concentrates on one crucial moment of “the age of extremes” and on one specific generation: the year 1945 and its progressive politicians and intellectuals. Focusing on Italy, West Germany and France, it suggests that the concept of generation should be regarded as an open question in space and time. Therefore, this volume asks what role generation played in the intellectual and political debates of 1945: if it facilitated change, if it served as source of solidarity and cohesion and how post-war societies organized their time

    Abstract: Deutsche Migranten in Argentinien: Ein historischer Beitrag zur Migrationsdebatte. Deutsche, österreichische und schweizer Einwanderer bildeten eine heterogene Gemeinde im Herzen der Metropole Buenos Aires. Sie entwickelten eine gemeinsame Erinnerungskultur, die ihnen Orientierung und Identität gab. Welche Charakteristika hatte diese Erinnerungskultur? Welche geschichtswissenschaftlichen Erklärungen gibt es für deren Herausbildung? Welche Erkenntnisse bringt uns dieser historische Fall für das Verständnis von Migration und Erinnerung in multiethnischen Gesellschaften in einer globalisierten Welt? Die Autorin zeigt, wie Aneignung und Abgrenzung von Geschichtsbildern in der Migrantengemeinde abliefen, die Entwicklung einer Meistererzählung und das Scheitern von geschichtspolitischen Projekten. Trotz vieler Bezüge zu den Herkunftsländern der Einwanderer war ihre Erinnerungskultur sehr stark von den Gegebenheiten in Argentinien, den Bedingungen vor Ort und der Zusammensetzung ihrer heterogenen Gemeinde abhängig.

    Abstract: Recent research has demonstrated that, in the Roman, Late Antique, Early Islamic and Medieval worlds, glass was traded over long distances, from the Eastern Mediterranean, mainly Egypt and Israel, to Northern Africa, the Western Mediterranean and Northern Europe. 'Things that travelled', a collaboration between the UCL Early Glass Technology Research Network, the Association for the History of Glass and the British Museum, aims to build on this knowledge. Covering all aspects of glass production, technology, distribution and trade in Roman, Byzantine and Early Medieval/Early Islamic times, including studies from Britain, Egypt, Cyprus, Italy and many others, the volume combines the strengths of the sciences and cultural studies to offer a new approach to research on ancient glass. By bringing together such a varied mix of contributors, specialising in a range of geographical areas and chronological time frames, this volume also offers a valuable contribution to broader discussions on glass within political, economic, cultural and historical arenas

    Abstract: How do we live in and with empire? The contributors to this book pursue this question by examining empire as an unequally shared present.     Abstract: The 'racial state' has become a familiar shorthand for the Third Reich, encapsulating its raison d'être, ambitions, and the underlying logic of its genocidal violence. The Nazi racial state's agenda is generally understood as a fundamental reshaping of society based on a new hierarchy of racial value. However, this volume argues that it is time to reappraise what race really meant under Nazism, and to question and complicate its relationship to the Nazis' agenda, actions, and appeal. Based on a wealth of new research, the contributors show that racial knowledge and racial discourse in Nazi Germany were far more contradictory and disparate than we have come to assume. They shed new light on the ways that racial policy worked and was understood, and consider race's function, content, and power in relation to society and nation, and above all, in relation to the extraordinary violence unleashed by the Nazis

    Abstract: Migration war immer ein wichtiger Aspekt der Geschichte der europäischen Integration. Die bestehende Literatur hat dieses Thema hauptsächlich von einer nationalen und sozioökonomischen Perspektive betrachtet. Dieses Buch jedoch integriert solche fragmentierten Analysen, betrachtet sie aus einem weiteren Blickwinkel und ordnet sie im breiteren Zusammenhang des sozialen und demografischen Wandels Europas sowie der politischen und wirtschaftlichen Geschichte der europäischen Integration ein.Das Buch untersucht die Auswirkungen der EU-Migrationspolitik auf die politischen und wirtschaftlichen Außenbeziehungen Europas und erkennt die Migration aus osteuropäischen Ländern vor 1989 als Teil der europäischen Integration an.Indem das Buch zeigt, dass die Migrationspolitik und ihr Einfluss auf europäische Gesellschaften nur im Zusammenhang der EU-Rahmenbedingungen vollständig verstanden werden können, trägt es wesentlich zur Migrationsforschung im Allgemeinen bei.Mit Beiträgen von:Giulia Bentivoglio, Marcel Berlinghoff, Cristina Blanco Sío-López, Elena Calandri, Alice Cunha, Yves Denéchère, Pawel Jaworski, Slawomir Lukasiewicz, Willem Maas, Guia Migani, Simone Paoli, Dimitris Parsanoglou, Yvette Santos, Beatrice Scutaru, Jacek Tebinka, Moshik Temkin, Giota Tourgeli und Roberto Ventresca.
    Abstract: Movement of people has been a key feature in the whole history of European integration. While existing literature has mostly adopted national viewpoints and a socioeconomic perspective, this book integrates these existing fragmented analyses, views them from a broader perspective and places them in the wider context of the social and demographic transformation of Europe and the political and economic narrative of continental integration. It highlights the impact made by EC/EU immigration policies on the external political and economic relations of Europe and acknowledges that pre-1989 migration from East European countries is part of European integration. By showing that migration policies and their impact on European national societies and economies cannot be fully understood without taking into account the EC framework, this book, therefore, contributes to migration studies as a whole.
