    Abstract: Linking literature from the sociological study of the apocalyptic with the sociology and philosophy of science, Apocalyptic Narratives explores how the apocalyptic narrative frames and provides meaning to contemporary, secular and scientific crises, focussing on nuclear war, general environmental crisis and climate change in both English and German speaking cultural contexts. In particular, the book will use social identity and representation theories, the sociologies of risk and Lakatos' philosophy of science to trace how our cultural background and apocalyptic tradition shape our wider interpretation, communication and response to contemporary global crisis. The set of environmental and other challenges that the world is facing is often framed in terms of apocalyptic or existential crisis. Yet apocalyptic fears about the near future are nothing new. This book looks at the narrative connections between our current sense of crisis and the apocalyptic. Der vorliegende Band erschließt das Geflecht der Arbeitsfelder von Johann Reinhold und Georg Forster.     Abstract: Eine „Pädagogik der Naturwissenschaften“ fragt einerseits nach gelingendem Lernen und andererseits nach gelingender Bildung mit und durch die Naturwissenschaften. In diesem Buch werden die wesentlichen, theoretisch gehaltvollen Elemente einer kritischen wie modernen Naturwissenschaftsdidaktik diskutiert. Die Lektüre des Buches soll die pädagogisch-didaktische Haltung von Fachdidaktikerinnen und Fachdidaktikern, Studierenden und Lehrkräften inspirieren und theoretisch unterfüttern. Daher akzentuieren wir wesentliche Prämissen, theoretische Grundlegungen und Ziele des naturwissenschaftlichen Unterrichts. Zentrale Problemstellungen einer „Pädagogik der Naturwissenschaften“ werden aus einer integrativen Perspektive bearbeitet. Dabei werden sowohl Bezüge zum disziplinären Physik-, Chemie- und Biologieunterricht als auch zu einem integrierten Fach Naturwissenschaft hergestellt.     Abstract: Anna Pineker-Fischer untersucht bildungssprachliche Anforderungen und Unterstützungsmaßnahmen in der naturwissenschaftlichen Unterrichtskommunikation. Der wissenschaftliche Ertrag der Arbeit liegt in der umfassenden und systematischen Analyse von theoretischen Aspekten einer sprachförderlichen Unterrichtsinteraktion. Des Weiteren leistet das Werk einen Beitrag zur empirischen Klärung der Frage, welche Kategorien und welche Instrumente sich für eine Untersuchung der kognitiven und sprachlichen Seite der Unterrichtsinteraktion im Fach Chemie eignen. Exemplarisch werden Möglichkeiten für einen sprachsensiblen Fachunterricht aufgezeigt.     Abstract: This book clarifies the interrelationship between optics, vision and perspective before the Classical Age, examining binocularity in particular. The author shows how binocular vision was one of the key juncture points between the three concepts and readers will see how important it is to understand the approach that scholars once took. In the Middle Ages and the Renaissance, the concept of Perspectiva – the Latin word for optics – encompassed many areas of enquiry that had been viewed since antiquity as interconnected, but which afterwards were separated: optics was incorporated into the field of physics (i.e., physical and geometrical optics), vision came to be regarded as the sum of various psycho-physiological mechanisms involved in the way the eye operates (i.e., physiological optics and psychology of vision) and the word ‘perspective’ was reserved for the mathematical representation of the external world (i.e., linear perspective). The author shows how this division, which emerged as a result of the spread of the sciences in classical Europe, turns out to be an anachronism if we confront certain facts from the immediately preceding periods. It is essential to take into account the way medieval scholars posed the problem – which included all facets of the Latin word perspectiva – when exploring the events of this period. This book will appeal to a broad readership, from philosophers and historians of science, to those working in geometry, optics, ophthalmology and architecture.

    Abstract: In his 1969 book The Making of a Counterculture, Theodore Roszak described the youth of the late 1960s as fleeing science "as if from a place inhabited by plague," and even seeking "subversion of the scientific worldview" itself. Roszak's view has come to be our own: when we think of the youth movement of the 1960s and early 1970s, we think of a movement that was explicitly anti-scientific in its embrace of alternative spiritualities and communal living. Such a view is far too simple, ignoring the diverse ways in which the era's countercultures expressed enthusiasm for and involved themselves in science-of a certain type. Rejecting hulking, militarized technical projects like Cold War missiles and mainframes, Boomers and hippies sought a science that was both small-scale and big-picture, as exemplified by the annual workshops on quantum physics at the Esalen Institute in Big Sur, or Timothy Leary's championing of space exploration as the ultimate "high." Groovy Science explores the experimentation and eclecticism that marked countercultural science and technology during one of the most colorful periods of American history

Es werden Beispiele aufgezeigt, wie GPS für geführte Bildungsrouten eingesetzt werden kann oder wie man mobile Spiele, die Nutzung von Apps und Websites in die Umweltbildung einbeziehen kann. Es gibt ein großes didaktisches Potenzial, die neuen digitalen Medien in die Bildung für nachhaltige Entwicklung an Schulen und in der Umweltarbeit einzusetzen. Anhand konkreter Bildungsangebote werden Möglichkeiten hierzu aufgezeigt. Sehr gut geeignet für Lehrende in Schulen, Umweltverbänden und in der Jugendarbeit. (2) (LK/F: Themelidis)

    Abstract: This book examines the diverse use of visual representations by teachers in the science classroom. It contains unique pedagogies related to the use of visualization, presents original curriculum materials as well as explores future possibilities. The book begins by looking at the significance of visual representations in the teaching of science. It then goes on to detail two recent innovations in the field: simulations and slowmation, a process of explicit visualization. It also evaluates the way teachers have used different diagrams to illustrate concepts in biology and chemistry. Next, the book explores the use of visual representations in culturally diverse classrooms, including the implication of culture for teachers’ use of representations, the crucial importance of language in the design and use of visualizations, and visualizations in popular books about chemistry. It also shows the place of visualizations in the growing use of informal, self-directed science education. Overall, the book concludes that if the potential of visualizations in science education is to be realized in the future, the subject must be included in both pre-service and in-service teacher education. It explores ways to develop science teachers’ representational competence and details the impact that this will have on their teaching. The worldwide trend towards providing science education for all, coupled with the increased availability of color printing, access to personal computers and projection facilities, has lead to a more extensive and diverse use of visual representations in the classroom.     Abstract: Each volume in the 7-volume series The World of Science Education reviews research in a key region of the world. These regions include North America, South and Latin America, Asia, Australia and New Zealand, Europe, Arab States, and Sub-Saharan Africa. The focus of this Handbook is on science education in Europe. In producing this volume the editors have invited a range of authors to describe their research in the context of developments in the continent and further afield. In reading this book you are invited to consider the historical, social and political contexts that have driven developments in science education research over the years. A unique feature of science education in Europe is the impact of the European Union on research and development over many years. A growing number of multi-national projects have contributed to the establishment of a community of researchers increasingly accepting of methodological diversity.     Abstract: "The German India-Expedition 1955-58, led and managed by Gustav Adolf Baron von Maydell, was probably the last 'universal' collection expedition which started from Hamburg, namedly by order of the Zoological Institute and Museum. Tha main focus of the expedition lay on the fields of zoology, botany and ethnology. baron von Maydell collected scientific material for quite a number of further museums, instiutes and scientists within and outside Hamburg and in Germany, especially for the Zoological Garden, Wupppertal, the Zoological Research Institute and Museum Alexander Koenig, Bonn, the Linden-Museum, Stuttgart, and the Overseas Museum, Bremen, and in India for the Zoological Survey of India, Calcutta. The expedition didn't only want to collect animals, plants and ethnological items but it had planned to work on ecological, bio-geographical and sociological questions. The aim which v. It offers arguments both for and against the epochal break thesis in light of historical antecedents. Contributors discuss topics such as: science as a continuing epistemological enterprise; the decline of the individual scientist and the rise of communities; the intertwining of scientific and technological needs; links to prior practices and ways of thinking; the alleged divide between mode-1 and mode-2 research methods; the commodification of university science; and the shift from the scientific to a technological enterprise. Additionally, they examine the epochal break thesis using specific examples, including the transition from laboratory to real world experiments; the increased reliance on computer imaging; how analog and digital technologies condition behaviors that shape the object and beholder; the cultural significance of humanoid robots; the erosion of scientific quality in experimentation; and the effect of computers on prediction at the expense of explanation. Whether these events represent a historic break in scientific theory, practice, and methodology is disputed. What they do offer is an important occasion for philosophical analysis of the epistemic, institutional and moral questions affecting current and future scientific pursuits.

    Abstract: This collection of essays examines the ways in which disputes and controversies about the application of scientific knowledge are resolved. Four concrete examples of public controversy are considered in detail: the efficacy of Laetrile, the classification of homosexuality as a disease, the setting of safety standards in the workplace, and the utility of nuclear energy as a source of power. The essays in this volume show that debates about these cases are not confined to matters of empirical fact. Rather, as is seen with most scientific and technical controversies, they focus on and are structured by complex ethical, economic, and political interests. Drs. Engelhardt and Caplan have brought together a distinguished group of scholars from the sciences and humanities, who sketch a theory of scientific controversy and attempt to provide recommendations about the ways in which both scientists and the public ought to seek more informed resolutions of highly contentious issues in science and technology. Scientific Controversies is offered as a contribution to the better understanding of the roles of both science and nonscientific interests in disputes and controversies pertaining to science and technology

    Abstract: So far the "Science Wars" have generated far more heat than light. Combatants from one or the other of what C. P. Snow famously called "the two cultures" (science versus the arts and humanities) have launched bitter attacks but have seldom engaged in constructive dialogue about the central issues. In The One Culture?, Jay A. Labinger and Harry Collins have gathered together some of the world's foremost scientists and sociologists of science to exchange opinions and ideas rather than insults. The contributors find surprising areas of broad agreement in a genuine conversation about science, its legitimacy and authority as a means of understanding the world, and whether science studies undermines the practice and findings of science and scientists. The One Culture? is organized into three parts. The first consists of position papers written by scientists and sociologists of science, which were distributed to all the participants. The second presents commentaries on these papers, drawing out and discussing their central themes and arguments. In the third section, participants respond to these critiques, offering defenses, clarifications, and modifications of their positions. Who can legitimately speak about science? What is the proper role of scientific knowledge? How should scientists interact with the rest of society in decision making? Because science occupies such a central position in the world today, such questions are vitally important. Although there are no simple solutions, The One Culture? does show the reader exactly what is at stake in the Science Wars, and provides a valuable framework for how to go about seeking the answers we so urgently need.
