    Abstract: Im Sommer 2017 konnte das Germanische Nationalmuseum ein luxuriöses Seidenkleid und einen rotseidenen Reifrock aus dem 18. Jh. erwerben, beide nahezu in Originalzustand. Die Neuwerbungen stehen im Zentrum einer Ausstellung zur Damenmode des Rokoko, dem Höhepunkt der europäischen, französisch geprägten Kleiderkultur, mit ihren zahlreichen Accessoires. Der ausstellungsbegleitende Band stellt Hypothesen zur Provenienz des Kleides vor und zeigt künftige Forschungsansätze auf. Zugleich bietet er eine Einführung in die komplexe Bedeutung der Rokoko-Mode, indem alle 90 Exponate in Bild und Text vorgestellt werden.

    Abstract: Léopold Sédar Senghor (1906 – 2001) war nicht nur der erste Präsident des unabhängigen Senegal. Er war darüber hinaus eine Symbolfigur des Dialogs der Kulturen nach dem Ende der Kolonialzeit. 1968 wurde er dafür mit dem Friedenspreis des deutschen Buchhandels ausgezeichnet. Seine Vision einer postkolonialen Moderne wollte das Monopol des Westens brechen und setzte doch auf Verständigung. Hans Belting und Andrea Buddensieg unternehmen die erste umfassende Würdigung Senghors und seines Lebenswerks in deutscher Sprache. Als junger Mann ging Senghor nach Paris, wo er früh Anerkennung als Dichter und die Bewunderung Jean-Paul Sartres fand. 1945 wurde er Abgeordneter der Französischen Nationalversammlung, später dann Mitglied des Europarats, in dem er ebenso vehement wie vergeblich für ein vereinigtes Europa unter Einschluss Afrikas warb. Seine Vision einer wahrhaft universellen Zivilisation, einer humanen Weltordnung, in der sich Afrika gegenüber dem Westen nicht länger assimilieren müsse, stellte die Kunst ins Zentrum. So förderte Senghor ab 1960 als Präsident des jungen Senegal die Kunst in einem Ausmaß, das in Afrika einmalig war. Hans Belting und Andrea Buddensieg blenden in ihrem eindrucksvollen, einfühlsamen Buch in ein vergessenes Kapitel des postkolonialen Aufbruchs in Afrika zurück. Die Weltgeschichte nahm einen anderen Weg als den von Senghor gesuchten – aber vielleicht keinen besseren. „Das Buch besticht durch die substanziellen, perspektivreichen Darlegungen zur Kunstfrage und Kulturpolitik, während die Präsentation des breiteren historischen Rahmens nicht ganz überzeugt und einen Teil der jüngeren einschlägigen Forschung ignoriert“ (FAZ)

    Abstract: Work is widely thought to have become more precarious. Many people feel that unions represent the interests of protected workers in good jobs at the expense of workers with insecure employment, low pay, and less generous benefits. Reconstructing Solidarity: Labour Unions, Precarious Work, and the Politics of Institutional Change in Europe argues the opposite: that unions try to represent precarious workers using a variety of creative campaigning and organizational tactics. Where unions can limit employers' ability to 'exit' labour market institutions and collective agreements and build solidarity across different groups of workers, this results in a virtuous circle, establishing union control over the labour market. Where they fail to do so, it sets in motion a vicious circle of expanding precarity based on institutional evasion by employers. Exploring the struggle of the unions against the expansion of precarious work in Europe, Reconstructing Solidarity explains the importance of how unions build, or fail to build, inclusive worker solidarity. It uses a diverse range of comparative case studies to describe the struggles of workers and unions in industries such as local government, music, metalworking, chemicals, meat-packing, and logistics, to argue against the thesis that unions act primarily to protect labour market insiders at the expense of outsiders

Soziale Kategorien wie Geschlecht, Ethnizität, sozialer Status oder das Alter einer Person sind ineinander verschränkt bzw. überkreuzen sich – und können daher auch gar nicht ohne ihre Wechselwirkungen untersucht werden. Diese Perspektive, die als »Intersektionsanalyse« inzwischen als sozialwissenschaftliches Paradigma gilt, wird in dem Band erstmals in vergleichender Perspektive auf die Frühe Neuzeit übertragen. Dem Programm einer »Historischen Intersektionsanalyse« folgend, fragen die dabei versammelten Fallstudien sowohl nach der Epochenspezifik sozialer Ungleichheiten als auch nach dem Wandel von Kategorien und deren Verschränkung. / »Entangled Differences« -- Social categories such as gender, ethnicity, status, and age do not exist in isolation, but rather are always interconnected.     Abstract: "Work is widely thought to have become more precarious. Many people feel that unions represent the interests of protected workers in good jobs at the expense of workers with insecure employment, low pay, and less generous benefits. Reconstructing Solidarity: Labour Unions, Precarious Work, and the Politics of Institutional Change in Europe argues the opposite: that unions try to represent precarious workers using a variety of creative campaigning and organizational tactics.00Where unions can limit employers' ability to 'exit' labour market institutions and collective agreements and build solidarity across different groups of workers, this results in a virtuous circle, establishing union control over the labour market. Where they fail to do so, it sets in motion a vicious circle of expanding precarity based on institutional evasion by employers. Exploring the struggle of the unions against the expansion of precarious work in Europe, Reconstructing Solidarity explains the importance of how unions build, or fail to build, inclusive worker solidarity. It uses a diverse range of comparative case studies to describe the struggles of workers and unions in industries such as local government, music, metalworking, chemicals, meat-packing, and logistics, to argue against the thesis that unions act primarily to protect labour market insiders at the expense of outsiders."--Back cover

Zugleich ist die Hemmschwelle für die Äußerung und Akzeptanz antisemitischer Ressentiments gesunken, sofern diese als „Israelkritik“ camoufliert sind. Parallel zu diesen Entwicklungen stellte der Antisemitismus sein Mobilisierungspotential für den politischen Protest auf der Straße unter Beweis, etwa im Rahmen der Mahnwachen für den Frieden und während des Gaza-Krieges 2014.     Abstract: In The Invention of Race in the European Middle Ages, Geraldine Heng questions the common assumption that the concepts of race and racisms only began in the modern era. Examining Europe's encounters with Jews, Muslims, Africans, Native Americans, Mongols, and the Romani ('Gypsies'), from the 12th through 15th centuries, she shows how racial thinking, racial law, racial practices, and racial phenomena existed in medieval Europe before a recognizable vocabulary of race emerged in the West. Analysing sources in a variety of media, including stories, maps, statuary, illustrations, architectural features, history, saints' lives, religious commentary, laws, political and social institutions, and literature, she argues that religion - so much in play again today - enabled the positing of fundamental differences among humans that created strategic essentialisms to mark off human groups and populations for racialized treatment. Her ground-breaking study also shows how race figured in the emergence of homo europaeus and the identity of Western Europe in this time

    Abstract: Für eine moderne Stadtgeschichtsforschung hat sich die Wiederaneignung von Max Webers Überlegungen zum Typus der okzidentalen Stadt als besonders inspirierend erwiesen. Weniger präsent ist demgegenüber, dass in den Debatten der Zeit um 1900 der ökonomische Aspekt des Stadtbegriffs von ganz erheblicher Bedeutung gewesen ist. Dieser Zusammenhang ist am Werk von Max Weber ablesbar. Deutlicher noch findet er sich bei Werner Sombart ausgestaltet, der gegenüber Produzenten und Fernhändlern den Konsumenten eine zentrale Rolle für Stadtentstehung und Stadtentwicklung zuweist. Der vorliegende Sammelband prüft die Ertragskraft konsumgeschichtlicher Konzepte und bezieht sie auf aktuelle Problemzusammenhänge der mittelalterlichen Stadtgeschichte.

Here is the acclaimed book that challenges the notion that Europe's formative engagement with the non-European world was invariably marred by an imperial gaze and presumptions of Western superiority. Osterhammel shows how major figures such as Leibniz, Voltaire, Gibbon, and Hegel took a keen interest in Asian culture and history, and introduces lesser-known scientific travelers, colonial administrators, Jesuit missionaries, and adventurers who returned home from Asia bearing manuscripts in many exotic languages, huge collections of ethnographic data, and stories that sometimes defied belief. Osterhammel brings the sights and sounds of this tumultuous age vividly to life, from the salons of Paris and the lecture halls of Edinburgh to the deserts of Arabia, the steppes of Siberia, and the sumptuous courts of Asian princes. He demonstrates how Europe discovered its own identity anew by measuring itself against its more senior continent, and how it was only toward the end of this period that cruder forms of Eurocentrism--and condescension toward Asia―prevailed.

    Abstract: Who votes for radical right parties and why? This book argues that the increasing popularity of the radical right in Europe originates in community bonds: strong ties to one's locality motivate support for the radical right. These parties use nostalgic themes and symbolic politicking to idealize community, defend local autonomy, and ultimately draw local identity into the electoral realm. While other explanations of the radical right's popularity typify supporters as victims of macro-economic shifts and strains, the author's account explores people's day-to-day experiences that link local connections to political decisions. The analysis also raises questions about the political implications of different formal authority structures such as the level and nature of power devolved to local units. The localist model of radical right support illuminates the psychological, social, and institutional conditions and processes that render people's feelings about their cities, towns, and villages relevant for politics

    Abstract: This book analyses the European border at Lampedusa as a metaphor for visible and invisible powers that impinge on relations between Europe and Africa/Asia. Taking an interdisciplinary approach (political, social, cultural, economic and artistic), it explores the island as a place where social relations based around race, gender, sex, age and class are being reproduced and/or subverted. The authors argue that Lampedusa should be understood as a synecdoche for European borders and boundaries. Widening the classical definition of the term ‘border’, the authors examine the different meanings assigned to the term by migrants, the local population, seafarers and associative actors based on their subjective and embodied experiences. They reveal how migration policies, international relations with African, Middle Eastern and Asian countries, and the perpetuation of new forms of colonization and imperialism entail heavy consequences for the European Union. This work will appeal to a wide readership, from scholars of migration, anthropology and sociology, to students of political science, Italian, African and cultural studies.--

    Abstract: This volume describes and maps congregations of Christian confessions and denominations, as well as groups with Jewish, Buddhist, Muslim, Hindu, and various other spiritual faiths, in different European countries. Consisting of three parts, it presents concrete sociological studies addressing how established and not established, old and new congregations of various faiths create a new kind of religious diversity at the country level; how religious congregations are challenged and thrive in large cities; and how religious congregations change in the 21st century. The book enlightens by its descriptive analysis and the theoretical questions it raises concerning the religious transformations happening all over Europe. It addresses issues of religious diversity in the cities of Europe by presenting large studies conducted in cities such as Barcelona in Spain, and Aarhus in Denmark. By means of large-scale censuses taken in areas such as North Rhine-Westphalia in Germany and in countries like Switzerland and Italy, the book shows how the historically established churches restructure their congregations and activities. It clarifies for the new gatherers where and how a new diversity of religious congregations is in the process of being established. Finally, the book covers two important topical issues: pluralisation and secularisation. It provides new data on religious diversity, painting a new picture of secularisation: the impact and structural consequences of the long-term decrease of membership in the established churches
