    Kurzfassung: Dieses Buch deutet die Rituale und Praktiken der Freimaurerbruderschaft als Cultural Performance. Anhand von reichhaltigem historischen Material kann gezeigt werden, dass die freimaurerischen Praktiken in der Perspektive der kultur- und sozialwissenschaftlichen Konzepte der 〉〉Performativität〈〈 und des 〉〉Habitus〈〈 genuin soziale Formen der inkorporierenden Einübung einer bürgerlichen Habitusethik sind. Die Analyse dieser rituellen Form der sozialen und körperorientierten Habitusprägung in der entstehenden Commercial Society macht das historische Phänomen als Teil der Kultur- und Gesellschaftsgeschichte sichtbar - und geht damit über die bekannten pauschalen Verweise auf die geistesgeschichtliche Nähe zu Ideen der Aufklärung hinaus.

By peering through the mists of the past, the case studies presented in The Land Beyond the Mists illustrate the significant advances to have taken place since decolonization in our understanding of the pre-colonial histories of Rwanda, Burundi, and eastern Congo.     Kurzfassung: Main description: Handwerker und Kleinhändler standen in der frühen Bundesrepublik unter hohem wirtschaftlichen und politischen Anpassungsdruck. Die neuen, zunehmend von wirtschaftsliberalen Vorstellungen und demokratischen Werten geprägten Rahmenbedingungen sowie die beschleunigte wirtschaftliche und gesellschaftliche Modernisierung stellten die ökonomische Existenz und das berufsständische Selbstverständnis vieler mittelständischer Gewerbetreibender in Frage. Abdolreza Scheybani beschreibt und erklärt die letztlich geglückte Integration dieser traditionellen Berufsgruppen in das sich herausbildende wirtschaftliche, soziale und politische System der Bundesrepublik. Er greift dabei die zentrale Frage nach der Wechselwirkung zwischen der Mittelstandspolitik einerseits und den Veränderungen der ökonomischen Bedingungen und der Lebensverhältnisse der gewerblichen Mittelschicht andererseits auf. Das Massensterben mittelständischer Kleinstbetriebe und die Entstehung einer außer- und tendenziell antiparlamentarischen Opposition in Gestalt des sogenannten Mittelstandsblocks zeigen, daß dieser Prozeß keineswegs reibungslos verlief und erhebliches politisches Konfliktpotential in sich barg. Der Autor: Abdolreza Scheybani promovierte in Neuerer Geschichte an der Ludwig-Maximilians-Universität, München. A debate on the 'anthropology of anthropology' was needed, one that would consider other forms of knowledge, modalities of writing, and political and intellectual practices. This volume undertakes that challenge: it is the result of discussions held at the first organized encounter between Iranian, American, and European anthropologists since the Iranian Revolution of 1979. It is considered an important first step in overcoming the dichotomy between 'peripheral anthropologies' versus 'central anthropologies.'     Kurzfassung: In 1847, during the great age of the freak show, the British periodical Punch bemoaned the public's "prevailing taste for deformity." This vividly detailed work argues that far from being purely exploitative, displays of anomalous bodies served a deeper social purpose as they generated popular and scientific debates over the meanings attached to bodily difference. Nadja Durbach examines freaks both well-known and obscure including the Elephant Man; "Lalloo, the Double-Bodied Hindoo Boy," a set of conjoined twins advertised as half male, half female; Krao, a seven-year-old hairy Laotian girl who was marketed as Darwin's "missing link"; the "Last of the Mysterious Aztecs" and African "Cannibal Kings," who were often merely Irishmen in blackface. Upending our tendency to read late twentieth-century conceptions of disability onto the bodies of freak show performers, Durbach shows that these spectacles helped to articulate the cultural meanings invested in otherness--and thus clarified what it meant to be British--at a key moment in the making of modern and imperial ideologies and identities.

    Kurzfassung: The Straight State is the most expansive study of the federal regulation of homosexuality yet written. Unearthing startling new evidence from the National Archives, Margot Canaday shows how the state systematically came to penalize homosexuality, giving rise to a regime of second-class citizenship that sexual minorities still live under today. Canaday looks at three key arenas of government control--immigration, the military, and welfare--and demonstrates how federal enforcement of sexual norms emerged with the rise of the modern bureaucratic state. She begins at the turn of the twentieth century when the state first stumbled upon evidence of sex and gender nonconformity, revealing how homosexuality was policed indirectly through the exclusion of sexually "degenerate" immigrants and other regulatory measures aimed at combating poverty, violence, and vice. Canaday argues that the state's gradual awareness of homosexuality intensified during the later New Deal and through the postwar period as policies were enacted that explicitly used homosexuality to define who could enter the country, serve in the military, and collect state benefits. Midcentury repression was not a sudden response to newly visible gay subcultures, Canaday demonstrates, but the culmination of a much longer and slower process of state-building during which the state came to know and to care about homosexuality across many decades. Social, political, and legal history at their most compelling, The Straight State explores how regulation transformed the regulated: in drawing boundaries around national citizenship, the state helped to define the very meaning of homosexuality in America.

    Kurzfassung: "How have conceptions and practices of sovereignty shaped how Chineseness is imagined? This ethnography addresses this question through the example of Macau, a southern Chinese city that was a Portuguese colony from the 1550s until 1999. As the Portuguese administration prepared to transfer Macau to Chinese control, it mounted a campaign to convince the city's residents, 95 percent of whom identified as Chinese, that they possessed a "unique cultural identity" that made them different from other Chinese, and that resulted from the existence of a Portuguese state on Chinese soil. This attempt sparked reflections on the meaning of Portuguese governance that challenged not only conventional definitions of sovereignty but also conventional notions of Chineseness as a subjectivity common to all Chinese people around the world. Various stories about sovereignty and Chineseness and their interrelationship were told in Macau in the 1990s.     Kurzfassung: In 1609 King Philip III ordered the expulsion of all Moriscos-Spaniards of Muslim descent-from Spain in an ongoing attempt to establish a homogeneous state and remove the last vestiges of Islam from his nation. Four centuries later, Spain and Europe are once again outraged by the presence of Islam within their borders, and, for many, the millions of Muslim immigrants now living there pose a fundamental challenge to European identity. Auf der Grundlage von Feldforschungen und von Archivarbeiten untersucht er Familien und Verwandtschaftsstrukturen sowie Heiratspraktiken, den Transfer von Heiratsgaben und das System der Mitgift in arvanitischen Dörfern im südöstlichen Attika (Südgriechenland). Bei den Arvaniten handelt es sich um die mittelalterlichen Vorfahren der heutigen albanischen Bevölkerung, die in der zweiten Hälfte des 14. Jahrhunderts in ihre heutigen Siedlungsgebiete zugewandert sind.Der Haupttitel bezieht sich auf den Umstand, dass die Assimilierungsprozesse des 19. und 20. Jahrhunderts darin resultieren, dass diese ethnische Gruppe ihre arvanitische Sprache mittlerweile kaum mehr praktiziert. Der Autor konstatiert, dass von ihrer ursprünglichen Sozialstruktur nur mehr Anklänge vorhanden sind - etwa in der Form der ambilinearen Abstammungsrechnung (hervorgegangen aus einer ursprünglich patrilinearen) - und sich der griechischen Umgebung angepasst hat.Alexakis Werk stellt insofern wissenschaftliches Neuland dar, als es erstmals diese Thematik aufgreift und es von einer historisch-anthropologischen Perspektive aus bearbeitet. Damit wird gleichzeitig eine Thematik beleuchtet, die lange Zeit vom offiziellen Griechenland tabuisiert wurde.     Kurzfassung: The original edition "Ta paidia tis siopis" was published by Ekdoseis Parousia Publishing House (ISBN 960-7601-64-5). The author owns the copyright and transferred it to the editor of the German translation for free.The author is one of the most prominent ethnologists of Greece. He investigates the family and kinship structures as well as the marriage practices, the transfer of marriage goods, and the dowry stystem of in the Arvanite villages in Southeastern Attica (Southern Greece) on the basis of fieldwork and archival research. The Arvanites represent the predecessors of the present Albanian population a branch of whichmigrated to its present settlements in the second half of the 14th century.The main title of the book is related to the fact that due to the adaption processes of th 19th and 20th centuries this ethnic group does not any longer practice its original language in everyday life. The author states that also the original social structure shifted towards the Greek environment, e.g. in form of ambilineal descent calculation instead of the original patrilineal descent calculation.Alexakis work enters scientific newland insofar as the author is the first Greek scholar who treats this topic from a modern historical-anthropological perspective. He, therefore, sheds ligtht on a topic that had been ignored by official Greece until a few years ago.The book is structured into three chapters:1) Marriage Payments2) Familiy and Property Transfer3)Ambilineal Descent Group and Marriage Strategies

    Kurzfassung: The turn of the twentieth century in New York City was characterized by radical transformation as the advent of consumer capitalism confronted established social hierarchies, culture, and conceptions of selfhood. The popular stage existed in a symbiotic relationship with the city and uniquely captured the contested terms of immigrant identity of the time. Street Scenes focuses on the intersection of modern city life and stage performance. From street life and slumming to vaudeville and early cinema, to Yiddish theater and blackface comedy, Esther Romeyn discloses racial comedy, passing, and masquerade as gestures of cultural translation. In these performances she detects an obsession with the idea of the city as theater and the self as actor, which was fueled by the challenges that consumer capitalism presented to notions of an "authentic" self. It was exactly this idea of "authentic" immigrant selfhood that was at stake in many performances on the popular stage, and Romeyn ultimately demonstrates how these diverse and potent immigrant works influenced the emergence of a modern metropolitan culture.

    Kurzfassung: In August 1880, businessman Adrian Jakobsen convinced eight Inuit men, women, and children from Hebron and Nakvak, Labrador to accompany him to Europe to be "exhibited" in zoos and Völkerschauen (ethnographic shows). Abraham, Maria, Noggasak, Paingo, Sara, Terrianiak, Tobias, and Ulrike agreed, partly for the money and partly out of curiosity to see the wonders of Europe, which they had heard about from Moravian missionaries.The Inuit arrived in the fall of 1880 and were much talked and written about in the local press. Meanwhile, the Moravian missionaries, who had begged them not to embark on the journey, were busily writing letters and trying to stay in contact with Abraham and his family. By January 1881 all eight Inuit had died of smallpox. This story is told through several different perspectives, from Abraham's diary, the earliest known Inuit autobiography, and the missionaries’ letters and reports, to a scholarly article, newspaper pieces, and even advertising. Many illustrations, including portraits done of the Inuit visitors, scans of some of the original documents in German, and recent photos of the abandoned Moravian mission in Hebron, round out Abraham’s intriguing and unfortunate story.

    Kurzfassung: E.G. Browne relates this story in his A Year amongst the Persians in orderto demonstrate the gross ignorance which sometimes characterises [amulls] decisions. The episode was related to Browne by one of his Bbassociates in Kerman, and the question was designed to expose this ignoranceof the clergy. As it is related here, however, the jibe is unwarranted.     Kurzfassung: The years between 1790 and 1830 saw over a hundred and fifty million people brought under British imperial control, and one of the most momentous outbursts of British literary and artistic production, announcing a new world of social and individual traumas and possibilities. This book traces the emergence of new forms of imperialism and capitalism as part of a culture of modernisation in the late eighteenth and early nineteenth century, and looks at the ways in which they were identified with and contested in Romanticism. Saree Makdisi argues that this process has to be understood in global terms, beyond the British and European viewpoint, and that developments in India, Africa, and the Arab world (up to and including our own time) enable us to understand more fully the texts and contexts of British Romanticism. New and original readings of texts by Wordsworth, Blake, Byron, Shelley, and Scott emerge in the course of this searching analysis of the cultural process of globalisation.     Kurzfassung: Hahn begins by developing a definition of sickness that is based on the patient's perception of suffering and disturbance rather than on the physician's assessment of biomedical signs. After reviewing the principal theories that account for the forms of sickness and healing found in different historical and cultural contexts, he explores the relevance of both anthropological and epidemiological approaches to sickness, focusing on the persistent gap between white and black infant mortality in the United States. Hahn then describes contemporary Western medicine as it might be seen by a visiting foreign anthropologist

This engrossing book investigates such portrayals of girlhood by analyzing children's and adult's literature, conduct manuals, religious tracts, institutions for wayward girls, as well as social practices and phenomena, including the dowry system and the domestic science movement. Employing the methods of feminist theory and cultural studies, Lynne Vallone examines the historical and social production of girls' culture in Britain and America - from eighteenth-century English asylums for penitent prostitutes and rescue homes in late nineteenth-century America to such social and legal practices as marriage settlements in which the upper-class girl's "jewel" of chastity enhanced her bride-price.
