Anschließend zeichnet der Künstler das Muster mit Wasser vor und beginnt, die vorher bereitgestellten Farben (Weiß, Rot, Gelb) aufzutragen.
    Abstract: The most highly respected artist in the village of Meno and one of his wives prepare painting surfaces from the bases of sago-palm leaf-stems and prime them with clay slip. Then the painter gets his paints ready, uses water to make a preliminary sketch and finally begins to apply the paints (white, red, yellow).

    Abstract: Auf einem stark geneigten Waldstück von Meno legt ein Mann eine Pflanzung an. Frauen roden das Unterholz, und jüngere Männer fällen in der Randzone alle, im Zentrum nur die dicksten Bäume. An einem geeigneten Sonnentag wird das dürre Blatt- und Astmaterial abgebrannt. (Vergl.     Abstract: In the secondary forest northwest of the village of Meno (Washkuk Hills), Yessomari lays out a plantation. Women (relations by marriage as well as blood relations) begin to clear the undergrowth from the steep bit of forest. Then Yessomari and young male relatives of his fell all the trees in the peripheral areas of the prospective garden. Only the thickest ones are felled in the central area. Finally a group of relatively young men remove the leafy branches from the trees that have been left standing in the centre. The dry leaves and branches are burned on a suitable day when there is unabstructed sunshine. The planting can begin. (Cf. Film E 2289).

    Abstract: Im Dorf Meno wird aus dem Saft der Pandanusfruchtkerne, aus Gemüse, Bananen, Sagostärke und Kokosfruchtfleisch in Tontöpfen eine verdickte Suppe gekocht. Die anfallenden Arbeiten bei der Zubereitung werden aus religiösen Gründen zwischen Mann und Frau aufgeteilt. Die Suppe wird vor allem jüngeren Männern vorgesetzt, die sich am Bau eines neuen Männerhauses beteiligt haben.
    Abstract: Using a thematically consistent example from the village of Meno in the Washkuk Hills, the film shows how the red pandanus pulp (Pandanus conoïdeus), vegetables, bananas, sago starch and coconut pulp are prepared to make a thick soup of porridge-like consistency. The cooking is done in clay pots, most of which the women have either made themselves or which have been received from other Kwoma as part of a ritual payment. For religious reasons, the preparation of the soup is divided up between husbands and wives. The soup is not meant to be consumed by members of the households; it will be served to a group of mainly young men who have helped to build a new men's house.

    Abstract: Ein Mann aus Meno baut einen kleinen Zeremonialtopf (Aumar) in Spiralwulsttechnik auf. Das Gefäß wird ohne Werkzeug von Hand ausgeformt. Nach einer kurzen Trocknungsphase an der prallen Sonne verziert der Töpfer die ganze Außenfläche in Kerbschnittechnik. Zum Schluß wird der Topf zusammen mit weiteren Tongefäßen im offenen Feuer gebrannt.
    Abstract: Using the technique of coiling with foundation, a man constructs a small ceremonial vessel (aumar). The vessel is modelled by hand, without the use of tools. After the vessel has been dried briefly in the sun, the potter decorates its whole outer surface, employing the chip carving technique. Finally, this and other clay vessels are fired in the open fire.

    Abstract: A group of 24 men dig holes on the plantation Yessomari has cleared northwest of the village of Meno in the Washkuk Hills. Later his wives and other women bring the yam seedlings, including intact tubers of the local kou type (Dioscorea esculenta). The planter sprinkles the latter with a secret, watery solution and inserts them in the holes, always observing certain rules of conduct. Cut-up nein tubers are planted without ceremonial activity. The women plant taro and vegetables. Threads of split lianas are stretched from the trees left standing after the clearance work, and the creepers of the yam plants are arranged so that they can climb up on them. One of the times women from Yessomari's household go to the plantation is to harvest the early vegetables and to weed. The first yam tubers can be harvested on the luxuriantly overgrown plantation after eight months.

    Abstract: Nachdem sie Ton geholt und aufbereitet hat, töpfert eine Frau in Spiralwulsttechnik eine Sagobreischale. Nach zwei Tagen glättet ihr Ehemann die Gefäßoberfläche und ritzt Muster ein. Nach dem Brennen im Brennhaufen bemalt er die Schale mit roter, gelber und weißer Farbe.
    Abstract: The film shows how a clay dish is being made starting with the digging of the raw material and following up the process to the firing and painting. A woman builds up the pot using a coiling technique, without any tools other than her hands. To decorate it her husband uses a cutting and scratching technique which differs from genuine chip-carving. The pot is fired in an open fire (bonfire). Subsequently the husband paints the pattern of the conical dish with earth pigments.

    Abstract: How closely linked the various domains of a planting culture are in daily life is demonstrated by means of examples from the activities of a leading Kwoma, Yessomari, who comes from the village of Meno-Saserman in the Washkuk Hills (Ambunti District, East Sepik Province). The film largely follows the planting cycle, from clearing the land (work done co-opertively by the planter, other men from his close cricle of friends and relations, and women) and burning the stubble through the digging of planting holes (done co-operatively by a large group of men), planting the yams, tying up and tending the creepers (the planter's three specific activities) to harvesting the crop. In between, glimpses are given of other sectors of male responsibility, like carving a decorated beam for a men's house, preparing a pandanus soup, extracting sago starch, making and decorating a piece of ceremonial pottery and painting a chip-carved shield. The film closes with a look at a harvest festival, which women with shields made of decorated net bags also take part in, dancing in front of the men's house.

    Abstract: Zwei führende Männer der Kwoma, Yessomari und Yabokoma aus Meno-Saserman, werden als Yamspflanzer, Schnitzer, Maler und Töpfer gezeigt. Es wird auf die für diese Kultur charakteristische Zusammenarbeit von Männern und Frauen bei der Gewinnung von Nahrungsmitteln sowie von Männern in losen Gruppen eingegangen, ebenso auf die religiösen Verknüpfungen.

    Abstract: Drei unterschiedliche Anwendungen der Maltechnik bei den Kwoma: das Malen in der freien Fläche, d. h. auf den flachgepreßten Basisteilen von Blattstengeln der Sagopalme, das Bemalen eines in Kerbschnitt-Technik verzierten Holzschildes und das Bemalen einer dreidimensionalen Schnitzerei eines Zierbalkens für das Männerhaus. Es malen führende Männer und Künstler allein, zu zweit oder zusammen mit jüngeren.
    Abstract: The film shows three different ways in which the Kwoma employ painting techniques: painting on flat surfaces, i.e. the flattened bases of sago-palm leaf-stems, chip-carved wooden shields and three-dimensional carvings. The painters are respected men and artists, who will be seen working alone, in pairs and with younger men.
