    Kurzfassung: Recent research suggests that the effects of stigma, discrimination, and exclusion against lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and intersex (LGBTI) people could be costing economies billions of dollars. There are numerous reasons for these costs, including adverse educational environments, employment discrimination, physical and mental health disparities, and violence. This research aims to estimate the economic cost of exclusion based on sexual orientation, gender identity and expression, and sex characteristics (SOGIESC) in the Republic of Serbia and to provide the country's policy makers, civil society, and development partners with new evidence on the ongoing policy dialogue on strengthening the social inclusion of lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and intersex (LGBTI) people. To estimate the cost of exclusion, this report presents two theoretical models focused on the labor market and related issues. The first model centers mainly on the accumulated loss of individual wages due to the consequences of exclusion. The second model calculates the negative effect of exclusion on accumulated fiscal revenues (due to lower income and payroll taxes) and expenditures (due to higher expenditures for unemployment benefits and active labor market programs)

    Kurzfassung: This paper examines the link between violent attacks of the Islamic extremist group Boko Haram, forced migration, and the empowerment of women in host communities. The paper finds positive effects of distant attacks on the economic well-being of women, their use of modern contraceptive methods, and rejection of traditional gender views. At the same time, however, the findings show an increase in the risk that women experience domestic violence. The paper then extensively examines forced displacement as an effect channel and its importance relative to other possible channels for explaining the spatial dispersion of the effects. Compared with Boko Haram attacks, the results are remarkably different for Fulani pastoralist-farmer clashes over natural resources

    Kurzfassung: Migration is one of the channels West African populations can use to adjust to the negative impacts of climate change. Using novel geo-referenced and high- frequency data, this study investigates the extent to which soil moisture anomalies drive international migration decisions within the region and toward Europe. The findings show that drier soil conditions decrease (rather than increase) the probability to migrate. A standard deviation decrease in soil moisture leads to a 2 percentage point drop in the probability to migrate, equivalent to a 25 percent decrease in the number of migrants. This effect is concentrated during the crop-growing season and likely driven by financial constraints. The effect is only seen for areas that are in the middle of the income distribution, with no impact on the poorest or richest areas of a country, suggesting that the former were constrained to start and the latter canaddress those financial constraints

    Kurzfassung: While the coronavirus disease (COVID-19) pandemic reinforced the critical role that water supply and sanitation (WSS) plays in preventing its spread, it affected the financial stability of service providers in the industry. In response to demands from the client countries, the World Bank carried out an analytical service and advisory (ASA) activity to assess the financial impact of the Coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic on WSS service providers in Latin America and identify possible mechanisms to improve service providers' resilience to these external shocks. This report presents the key findings from the financial impact assessment of the Coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic on WSS service providers in Latin America and draws cross-cutting lessons. The report also documents examples of good practices that can be implemented at the WSS service provider and government levels to build the financial resilience of the sector and lays out some financing mechanisms that can help service providers enhance their capacity to cope with future pandemics or other crises, including natural disasters. It is envisioned that the findings of this report will inform policymakers and WSS service providers in the World Bank's client countries in planning for financial resilience building in the WSS sector
