Abstract: 'Corneliussen examines why expansive gender equity in Norway seems to influence every major segment of society - except computing technology. Her discourse analysis explores reasons for stability in gender-ICT relations, and suggests pressure points for change.' - Thomas J. Misa, University of Minnesota, USA 'Corneliussen's book is a challenging intervention into the debate over gender and technology. Through a diffractive reading of the research, Corneliussen tells an alternative story about gender and technology, demonstrating that their relations are not stable and fixed but hold potential for change.' - Susan Hekman, University of Texas at Arlington, USA
Abstract: Through empirical material as well as theoretical discussions, this book explores developments in gender-technology relations from the 1980s to today. The author draws on her long-lasting research in the field, providing insight in both historical and more recent discussions of gender in relation to computers and computing, Hilde G. Corneliussen explores developments in gender--technology relations from the 1980s to today. Through empirical material and theoretical discussions, the author addresses popular discourses surrounding the cultural appropriation of personal computers. She presents a study of computer students, following them through their first term at a programming course, and meets women who are fascinated, addicted and even in love with technology. Corneliussen tackles questions concerning the low proportion of women in computing, and explores how this has been dealt with in higher education. By providing insights into historical as well as more recent discussions of gender in relation to computers, this book opens up new perspectives for understanding men and women's relations to technology

Abstract: "The near-ubiquitous spread of ICT offers unprecedented opportunities for social and economic agents, reshapes social and economic structures and drives the emergence of socio-economic networks. This book contributes to the growing body of literature and present state of knowledge, offering the reader broad evidence on how new information and communication technologies impact women’s economic and social empowerment and hence have an impact on overall welfare creation. More specifically, it concentrates on demonstrating how ICT may become ‘empowering technologies’ through their implementation. The book is designed to provide deep insight into the theoretical and empirical evidence on ICT as a significant driver of women`s social and economic development. Special focus is given to examining the following broad topics: channels of ICT impact on women`s development; the role of ICT in enhancing women`s active participation in formal labor markets; examples of how ICT encourages education, skills development, institutions development et alia, and thus contributes to women’s social and economic empowerment, as well as case-based evidence on ICT`s role in fostering women’s equality. The primary audience for the book will be scholars and academic professionals from a wide variety of disciplines but mainly those who are concerned with addressing the issues of economic development and growth, social development, the role of technology progress in the context of broadly defined socio-economic progress."...
