Abstract:
A death feast is held in Dorong village. The corpse had been buried two years before, hair and nails of the deceased, called rapu, had been placed separately on top of the coffin. This rapu is now dug up, since the family finally have the means to arrange the feast. In the course of the feast the priestesses of the village, wadiam, communicate with the soul of the deceased until now in a transitional realm. Only after the tiwah is performed does the soul leave for the country of the dead, to join the ancestors and remain there definitely. During the tiwah the rapu is kept in the house of the dead man's daughter. Ritual cock-fights, offerings of pigs and chickens accompany the tiwah. The tiwah is performed according to the adat of the Kaharingan religion.
