Abstract:
The Karakalpak Republic makes up the eastern third of Uzbekistan. Karakalpaks are Sunni Muslims and they speak a Turkic language. In 1990 the Karakalpak population in Uzbekistan was estimated to be 380,000. The economy is dominated by state controlled and collectivized cotton agriculture.
