Abstract:
The author analyzes the historical roots of the current debate about women and Islam by tracing the developments in Islamic discourses on women and gender from the pre-Islamic Middle East to modern times. After describing the gender systems before the rise of Islam, she focuses on those Arab societies that played an important role in the Islamic discourse on women and gender (Arabia in the beginning of Islam, Iraq, Egypt) and thus shows us the position of women in Islamic society.
