Abstract: This book brings together the newest and the most innovative scholarship on Nigerian children - one of the least researched groups in African colonial history. It engages the changing conceptions of childhood, relating it to the broader themes about modernity, power, agency, and social transformation under imperial rule. Contributors detail everyday interaction of children with the socio-political and economic infrastructure of colonialism and demonstrate that they played a significant but rarely acknowledged role in molding core ideas about colonial modernity and civilization. Children and Childhood in Colonial Nigerian Histories fills a major gap in African studies by presenting the historical roots of some of the main issues about children' experience in postcolonial Nigeria. It argues that colonial history of children is important for understanding the challenges of childhood in contemporary Nigeria.

Abstract: SlutWalk is a study of the global anti-rape movement of the same name, in eight nations which organized marches: Australia, Canada, India, New Zealand, Singapore, South Africa, the UK and US. It demonstrates the mainstream news' unprecedented support for SlutWalk, suggesting that we may be finally moving away from an era in which feminism is seen as dead, redundant or passe;. Yet despite this overwhelming support, mainstream coverage was often shallow, particularly when compared to the feminist blogosphere, which provided sophisticated and nuanced analyses of sexual assault and rape culture. The feminist blogosphere was also a key site for critiquing patriarchal rape myths, and providing 'counter-memories' of the movement. This book examines representations of the movement in mainstream news and feminist blogs, and documents the experiences, routines and strategies of 22 organizers who were involved in the movement between 2011 and 2014. In doing so, it presents a robust and original analysis of modern feminist activism from various angles, and is a must-read for anyone interested in modern feminist protest and campaigns.

Abstract: This volume develops an understanding of Korean American girls in the Korean American church between the ages of thirteen and nineteen. Christine J. Hong analyses and evaluates girl's formation around self, gender, and understandings of God in the context of Korean American mainline protestant congregational life. The book utilizes a practical theological qualitative study and develops a hybrid methodology using a feminist ethnography with de-colonial aims and indigenous research methods. Its goal is to facilitate practical theology's aim of enabling transformative experiences in communities of faith. The study asks and answers the question: what is the experience of being a Korean American girl in the Korean American immigrant church? Hong asserts that cultivating a better understanding of how Korean American girls develop concepts of self, gender, and God will help practical theologians, particularly religious educators, pinpoint, unpack, and evaluate the complexities of bi-cultural identity and faith formation

Abstract: "Presents a contemporary analysis of the impact of China's rise on the Mekong Region at a critical period of Southeast Asian history. As the most populated country and the second largest economy in the world, China has become an increasingly influential player in global and regional affairs. Economic ties between China and her southern neighbors are particularly strong. Yet relations between China and the Mekong region are complex and embedded in other socio-cultural and political issues. China's accelerated growth, increasing economic footprint, global search for energy, natural resources, and food security, and the rapid pace of its military modernization have created a wide range of new challenges for smaller countries in Southeast Asia. These new challenges both encourage and limit cooperation between China and the emerging ASEAN Economic Community (AEC). This book pays close attention to some of these challenges with particular focus on the impact of Chinese investment, trade, foreign aid, and migration"--

Abstract: "The American Myth of Markets in Social Policy examines how implementing American tropes in policy design inadvertently frustrates policy goals. The book investigates multiple market-oriented designs including funding for private organizations to deliver public services, funding for individuals to buy services, and policies incentivizing or mandating private actors to provide social policy. Hevenstone shows that these solutions often not only fail to achieve social goals, but actively undermine them. The book carefully details the mechanisms through which this occurs, and examines several policies in depth, covering universal social insurance programs like healthcare and pensions, as well as smaller interventions like programs for the homeless. Abstract: "How can people live together, with ever more diverse characteristics, in the world's rapidly expanding cities? The UN estimates a doubling of the world's urban population by 2050. Meanwhile, global migration flows show profound diversification of migrants' nationality, ethnicity, language, gender balance, age, human capital and legal status. Everywhere, migrants with complex 'new diversity' traits dwell in cities alongside people from previous, 'old diversity' waves. That is, since new migrants tend to inhabit those urban spaces which still play host to migrants from previous waves, these new patterns of diversification are 'layered' on top of pre-existing patterns of diversity. How do prior conditions of diversity affect the incorporation of new migrants who are characterized by significantly different traits? With these issues in mind, this book address the core research question: In public spaces compared across cities, what accounts for similarities and differences in social and spatial patterns that arise under conditions of diversification, when new diversity-meets-old diversity? Based on a five-year comparative research project carried out by a multi-disciplinary team, Diversities Old and New provides findings from New York (a classic city of immigration, with new global migrant flows in a broadly supportive political context), Singapore (dominated by racial-cultural politics, and wholly dependent on new, highly restricted migrants), and Johannesburg (emerging from Apartheid with tensions around unregulated new, pan-African migrant flows). Spanning sociology, anthropology and human geography, the book seeks to analyze the changing nature of diversity and it's socio-spatial patterns in major cities around the world. In addition to rich ethnographic descriptions and robust sociological examination concerning some of the key urban processes of our age, Diversities Old And New also provides methodological innovations, including visual methods, which have been utilized to gather and analyze data. More information on these innovations can be found using the QR code below"--

Abstract: As the first country in Sub-Saharan Africa to gain independence from a European imperial power, Ghana has always occupied a position of primacy in the African political and historical imagination. This is due in no small part to the indelible impression left by its first president, the charismatic and self-promoting Kwame Nkrumah, who by his death had become one of the most iconic figures of the postcolonial era. Nkrumah's legacy has long been the subject of debate, with some depicting him as a pioneering nationalist and others as a dictatorial megalomaniac, and the political, social, and global-historical dimensions of his presidency have been thoroughly studied. At the same time, the symbolic, semiotic, iconographical, and ephemeral strategies he used to consolidate power and construct a coherent Ghanaian nation-state have been largely neglected by scholars. This innovative study of Nkrumah and Ghana offers a fascinating look at his propagandistic use of political iconography through 'symbols of nationhood' such as currency, postage stamps, museums, monuments, Adinkra symbols, the national anthem, emblems, and both national and party flags. As author Harcourt Fuller demonstrates here, the premiership of the self-proclaimed Founder of the State of Ghana was mainly characterized by a cult of personality wherein Nkrumah branded the national flock with his image by personalizing public symbols of nationhood.

Abstract: The search for meaning is an essential human activity. It is not just about agreeing on some definitions about the world, objects, and people; it is an ethical process of opening up to find new possibilities. Langlois uses case studies of social media platforms (including Facebook, Twitter, and Amazon) to revisit traditional conceptions of meaning. Ganaele Langlois is Assistant Professor in the Communications Program at the University of Ontario Institute of Technology, Canada.

Abstract: Migration and Regional Integration in West Africa explores how different immigration policies and multiple monetary zones have hindered sustainable cross-border socio-economic interactions in West Africa. Since previous empirical efforts have largely neglected how the migration process is sustained at "home" and "abroad", Adeniran examines the significance of cross-border networking in the process of identity integration within the ECOWAS sub-region. Studying the informal cross-border interactions along the Nigerian-Ivorian migratory corridor by the Ejigbo-Yoruba, Adeniran believes these migrants have persistently enabled the processes of regional integration and inter-community development within the sub-region. Their interactions have accounted for the harmonization of distinctive dual identities within the transnational social space, and suggest that related cross-border networking pattern should be promoted in order to attain the goal of a borderless ECOWAS sub-region.

Abstract: "The history of relations between Italy and China has often been clouded by myths, projection biases, intellectualizations and, ultimately, stereotypes. This edited volume is proposed to the attention of the international community of undergraduate and graduate students, and scholars of Italy and China, as a first attempt to systematically engage this intellectual vacuum. To this end, the editors have distilled a selection of ten chapters produced by scholars based in Australia, China, Italy, the United Kingdom and the United States, complemented by a substantial introduction. While each chapter looks at the historical or contemporary relations between Italy and China from a specific perspective, they are assembled to offer a comprehensive diachronic account of the most salient historical junctures and intellectual debates shaping this reiterated encounter between two ancient civilizations. "--

Abstract: "The book examines selected faith-based organisations (FBOs) and their attempts to seek to influence debate and decision-making at the United Nations (UN). Increasing attention on FBOs in this context has followed what is widely understood as a widespread, post-Cold War 'religious resurgence', which characterises a novel 'postsecular' international environment. One aspect of the new postsecular environment is increasing focus on global public policy at the UN, from FBOs from various religious traditions, especially Christianity, Islam, and Judaism"--
Abstract: ""Finally there is a book that addresses the increasing presence and relevance of faith-based organizations at the UN. In his coherent and accessible analysis, Jeffrey Haynes shows how FBOs navigate UN's liberal secular ethos with an eye on their ideological differences. With its stimulating discussion of issue areas ranging from reproductive health rights to economic development, the book will generate considerable reflection on the role of FBOs in global governance." Abstract: "This book engages in a conversation between social theory and Islamic studies. Drawing on theories of successive modernities, sociology of religion, and poststructuralist approaches to modern subjectivity formation, it introduces a novel analytical framework to the study of Middle Eastern societies. The authors pose the question as to the ways in which Muslims have constructed meaningful modern selfhoods, providing their reader with unique insights into the ongoing social transformation of the Middle East. Making Islamic charities and youth organizations their primary site of investigation, they combine studies on Islamic reform with case studies on social activism in Egypt and Jordan. In criticizing the alleged uniqueness of Western modernity, the book challenges exclusivist assumptions about both Western modernity and contemporary Islamic ways of life. In this way, it makes original contributions to conceptual discussions on modernity and our knowledge of modern Muslim societies"--

Abstract: This edited collection, comprising essays by an array of established and emerging scholars from Europe and the United States, offers a fresh perspective on the history of transatlantic political networks and exchanges since 1800. Historians such as Daniel T. Rodgers have already shown how important such networks were in shaping the politics of the modern Atlantic world. To date, however, this field has been dominated by studies of the activities and ideas of progressive reformers, with a particular focus on the period 1870-1940, an era in which reform networks coalesced so as to fashion the world of 'social politics' so brilliantly depicted in Rodgers's path-breaking study Atlantic Crossings (1998). The contributions gathered here challenge the chronological and ideological orientation of such work. They do so by collectively proposing a new periodization of modern transatlantic politics--one demonstrating the vitality and long-range significance both of early and mid-nineteenth, and of post-1945 interactions. At the same time, they illustrate the ideological heterogeneity of transatlantic political exchange, which encompassed a kaleidoscope of conservative, radical, and populist elements, in addition to the progressive and liberal currents about which so much has already been written.

Using a biographical approach to map out life histories, uniquely this book not only examines the key ideas of the thinkers interviewed, but it also invites readers to share their personal journeys to help one understand the experiences that led to their work within the field. The selection of thinkers included within this text is done so not with the aim to offer an encyclopedic index, but rather, to show how postcolonial thought as a broader concern can been found across a range of disciplines"--

Abstract: This book will be the first comprehensive examination of the role of clout in explaining organizational decision making, There is one major factor that explains business actions that has thus far escaped thorough exploration. That factor is clout, or as it is more broadly understood, power. Those with clout in the business organizations make the decisions and influence what the business does. Yet the origins and uses of clout are hidden. Everyone wants to know more about this inner world as clout is still largely unrecognized in studies of corporate culture. With Clout, the first researched-based book on the topic, Bolland fills this void. He systematically analyses the subject and answers the many questions about this aspect of business life, including exploring what organization clout is, how it has evolved, how it is manifested, how it is used and how it relates to other aspects of business organizations. Readers will be able to apply findings to their own career, and students will gain a tested framework for understanding the importance of this subject

Abstract: "How are ethnographic knowledge and anthropological theory created out of field experiences? Working in the Field explores emplacement and experience-centered narratives as the modes in working in places brings anthropology to life. Stewart and Strathern show how first impressions of an area carry depths of meanings which can gradually be unpacked in later analysis and how the fieldworker's memories may become blended with those of the people studied as a result of long-term engagement with them. Spanning Papua New Guinea, Taiwan, and Scotland, and Ireland, Stewart and Strathern show how fieldwork in apparently different areas can lead to unexpected comparisons and discoveries of similarities in human cross-cultural patterns of behavior"--

Abstract: "This book articulates and defends a Rawlsian version of cosmopolitanism. Critiquing Rawls's own suggestion that states (or 'peoples') be treated as foundational to the global order, as well as alternative Rawlsian defenses of Rawls's approach, Radicalizing Rawls proposes a polycentric global legal regime, featuring a Law of Persons rather than Rawls's Law of Peoples. Gary Chartier argues provocatively for more extensive global human rights protections than those Rawls defends and maintains that global anarchy could prove to be an attractive version of John Tomasi's Rawlsian 'market democracy.'"--

Abstract: "Historians commonly point to the 1965 Immigration and Nationality Act as the inception of a new chapter in the story of American immigration. Whereas the previous system (itself based on the Immigration Act of 1924) limited newcomers and gave priority to applicants from northwestern Europe, the 1965 measure eliminated national quotas and took into account education, jobs, and professional. As a result, the national and ethnic profile of immigrants to the U.S. changed dramatically, including large numbers of arrivals from the Caribbean, Central America, South America, South Asia, East Asia, Africa, the Middle East, and the former Soviet Union. This wide-ranging interdisciplinary volume brings together scholars from varied disciplines to probe this subject, considering what is genuinely new about post-1965 immigration (both documented and undocumented), and what continuities have persisted. The result is a rich and nuanced portrait of American society in the twentieth and twenty-first centuries, one that has been defined not simply by the fortunes of postwar liberalism, but also by the fall of the Soviet Union and the War on Terrorism"--

Abstract: The monsters that anthropologists encounter in their field sites differ significantly from those portrayed and analyzed in the thriving interdisciplinary literature-anthropology's monsters haunt off the pages of books and screens of televisions. These monsters come in all sorts of (non-gothic) guises, and their presence is inextricably intertwined with the lives of those they haunt. Offering a dialogue between anthropology and literature, media, and cultural studies, this book presents fine-grained ethnographic vignettes of monsters dwelling in the contemporary world, from Aboriginal Australia in the Pacific to Asia and Europe. Review: "Monster Anthropology in Australasia and Beyond marks a substantial, breath-taking entry of anthropology into monster studies. Catalysts to story and action, monsters are shown in these lucid, innovative essays to accomplish cultural work that is essential, local and real. Admirably interdisciplinary, the book belongs on the shelf of every scholar interested in how the borders of difference are patrolled by figures of menace and allure. But keep the light on as you read." - Jeffrey Jerome Cohen, George Washington University, USA "This book presents a wonderfully engaging group of essays highlighting the significant contribution of anthropology to the fascinating but largely literature-based discipline of monster studies. The volume's ethnographic richness demonstrates the importance of monster figures in cultures worldwide. The authors - many of whom conducted extensive fieldwork - take the 'reality' of monsters seriously and demonstrate how tangible and personal the presence of monsters can be in countries as diverse as Australia, Georgia, and Iceland." - D. Felton, University of Massachusetts Amherst, USA "Don't be scared by the outre subject matter - this is anthropology in the best sense of the word: richly ethnographic case studies combine with a broad, cross-cultural framework to theorize the monstrous. This book is a superb example of anthropology's ability to engage in interdisciplinary dialogue without giving up its disciplinary commitments." - Alex Golub, University of Hawai'i at Manoa, USA

Abstract: "This volume addresses forced migration and mobility in the Muslim world. It explores the tensions between Muslim religious conceptions of space and place and new policies of 'migration management' and secure borders. People from Muslim territories make up the majority of the world's forced movers today, but are increasingly barred from traditional routes and pathways to safety. Managing Muslim Mobilities analyzes how states in the region call on Islamic ideas of welcome, sanctuary and protection while establishing policies to prevent movement and citizenship. The volume embraces a 'mobilities' perspective to critique policy assumptions about international borders and to highlight the relationship between people and places. All long-time observers of the region, the volume's contributors draw upon original and empirically grounded research to analyze population mobility for Palestinians, Iraqis, Sudanese, Afghans, Albanians, Turks, and others, and migration management policies in Jordan, Iran, Lebanon, Iraq, Egypt, and the Gulf states, as well as Muslim migration to Germany and the US. Abstract: "Slaves, convicts, indentured immigrants, and unfree seamen have traveled the world's oceans at many times and places throughout human history. Across the Atlantic, Mediterranean, Indian, and Pacific Oceans, this bondage took divergent forms and exhibited a range of historical dynamics. In spite of this variety, the conventional Atlantic World historical paradigm has largely shaped our understanding of modernity as being defined by exploration and discovery, European dominance, global capitalism, and the transition from slavery to free labor. Not only does this perspective evince a Eurocentric emphasis on the 'uniqueness' of the West, but it is increasingly contested even for the Atlantic itself. This provocative study contrasts the romantic conflation of freedom and the sea with the complex labor relationships of seamen, slaves, and immigrants in the Indian Ocean during the long nineteenth century. In the process, it advances a new framework for understanding labor, bondage, and modernization"--Provided by publisher

Abstract: Trust Regimes contributes to a further discussion of the conflicts and dilemmas arising as a result of the transformation trust undergoes when it is concretised in varying institutional contexts, An increasing number of people work in organizations that 'trade in trust'. Institutions such as banks, accounting firms, schools, and hospitals require customers, students, and patients to have confidence in the experience and professional expertise of the staff, as well as in the effectiveness of the regulations, rules, and systems in place for quality control. What mechanisms have developed in modern society to create, manage, maintain, and convey trust in companies, public administrations, and civil society organizations? What takes place in the encounter between different cultures of confidence and what happens when confidence in or between organizations is shattered? Trust and Organizations gathers an interdisciplinary group of academics to contextualize the dilemmas resulting from the institutionalization of trust and confidence in a wide selection of organizational settings. The importance of trust is highlighted in relation to different types of borders or boundaries - institutional, organizational, and geographical - as the overlapping and blurring of such boundaries is becoming one of the main characteristics of an increasingly transnational and re-regulated world
