    Abstract: This study traces the often uncanny relationships between Irish- and Jewish-Americans, arguing for the centrality of these diasporic groups to the development of American popular music, fiction, and especially drama. The book reads such cultural forms as tenement fiction, Tin Pan Alley music, and melodrama as part of a larger 'circum-North Atlantic' world in which texts and performers from Ireland, Europe, and America were involved in a continuous cultural exchange within which stereotypes and performances of Jewishness and Irishness took centre stage.

One manifestation of this process was the fashionable Negrophilia of the 1920s, the decade in which the two most successful Black American stars of their era first made their names: Josephine Baker and Paul Robeson. The book is threaded around their careers, their travels, and their relationships.

    Abstract: This title examines the ritual murder accusation (or blood libel), one of the most heinous charges against the Jews in the history of medieval antisemitism. It traces the origins to the circumstances surrounding the death of William of Norwich in 1144 and the text of the 'Life and Passion' composed by the monk Thomas of Monmouth in 1150, in the period immediately following the English civil war, the Anarchy under King Stephen, and the Second Crusade. The charge arose as the result of a trial of an indebted knight, Simon de Novers, for killing his Jewish banker Deulesalt.

    Abstract: This title identifies a new family model geared for the post-industrial economy. The Blue Family Paradigm emphasises the importance of women's, as well as men's, workforce participation, egalitarian gender roles, and the delay of family formation until both parents are emotionally and financially ready. By contrast, the Red Family Paradigm rejects these new family norms, viewing the change in moral and sexual values as a crisis. The authors show how the Red-Blue divide goes much deeper than this value system conflict.

    Abstract: Families are a pervasive influence in life, yet their influence on political beliefs has been little studied beyond the idea that parents and spouses pass along their beliefs. This book explores a broader set of links between family circumstances and political attitudes. It provides evidence that behaviours without explicit political intention - such as choosing to work or to take multiple children to the same extracurricular activities - can shape the ideologies of close relatives and that siblings and children can by their very existence inflect policy preferences.

    Abstract: "Ten years ago, in the wake of massive crimes in central Africa and the Balkans, the first permanent international criminal court was established in The Hague despite resistance from some of the world's most powerful states. In the past decade, the court has grown from a few staff in an empty building to a bustling institution with more than a thousand lawyers, investigators, and administrators from around the world. Despite its growth and the backing of more than 120 nations, the ICC is still struggling to assert itself in often turbulent political crises. The ICC is generally autonomous in its ability to select cases and investigate crimes, but it is ultimately dependent on sovereign states, and particularly on the world's leading powers. These states can provide the diplomatic, economic, and military clout the court often needs to get cooperation-and to arrest suspects. But states don't expend precious political capital lightly, and the court has often struggled to get the help it needs. When their interests are most affected, moreover, powerful states usually want the court to keep its distance. Directly and indirectly, they make their preferences known in The Hague. Rough Justice grapples with the court's basic dilemma: designed to be apolitical, it requires the support of politicians who pursue national interests and answer to domestic audiences.     Abstract: Though many people around the world are oblivious to it, polygamy continues to be practiced in the United States. The state of Texas drew worldwide attention in 2008, as federal agents surrounded the compound of the Fundamentalist Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (FLDS) and took custody of more than 400 children. Several members of the schismatic religious group, whose women attire themselves in old-fashioned "prairie dresses," admitted that they practice polygamy. The state justified the raid by alleging that underage marriage was being forced on young women; however, a year later, all but one of the children had been returned to their parents and only ten men were charged with crimes, some barely related to the original charges. This volume offers valuable insights into the history and culture of the many people, including members of the FLDS, who lead polygamous lives in the United States in the twenty-first century

Why do groups of teenagers, investors, and corporations take unnecessary risks? What leads groups to engage in such destructive acts as terrorism and ethic cleansing?. In Going to Extremes, renowned legal scholar and best-selling author Cass Sunstein offers startling insights into why and when people gravitate toward extremism. Sunstein marshals an abundance of evidence that shows that when like-minded people talk to one another, they tend to become more extreme in their views than they were before. This point applies to such diverse groups as religious organizations, corporate boards, investment clubs, and White House officials. Sunstein introduces original research to show that when liberals are brought together to debate climate change, they end up more alarmed about climate change, while conservatives brought together to discuss same-sex unions become skeptical about same-sex unions. In courtrooms, radio stations, and chatrooms, enclaves of like-minded people are breeding ground for extreme movements. Sunstein shows that a good way to create an extremist group, or a cult of any kind, is to separate members from the rest of society, either physically or psychologically.     Abstract: In the quiet town of Seneca Falls, New York, over the course of two days in July, 1848, a small group of women and men, led by Elizabeth Cady Stanton and Lucretia Mott, held a convention that would launch the women's rights movement and change the course of history. In Seneca Falls and theOrigins of the Women's Rights Movement, Sally McMillen reveals, for the first time, the full significance of that revolutionary convention and the enormous changes it produced. The book covers 50 years of women's activism, from 1840 to 1890, focusing on four extraordinary figures - Mott, Stanton, Lucy Stone, and Susan B. Anthony. McMillen tells the stories of their lives, how they came to take up the cause of women's rights, the astonishing advances they made during their lifetimes, and the far-reaching effects of the work they did. At the convention they asserted full equality with men, argued for greater legal rights, greater professional and education opportunities, and the right to vote - ideas considered wildly radical at the time. Indeed, looking back at the convention two years later, Anthony called it "the grandest and greatest reform of all time."
