Cette ethnographie est centrée sur des musiciens reconnus en Europe et aux Etats-Unis dans les domaines du jazz et de l'un de ses dérivés appelé "musique improvisée" (Claude Barthélémy, Fred Frith, Joëlle Léandre, Bernard Lubat, Médéric Collignon, Akosh Szelevényi, Michel Portal...). Entre relations informelles (réseaux d'affinités, apprentissage par imprégnation) et institutionnalisation (Orchestre National de Jazz, Mills College, structures d'enseignement, festivals), ces musiciens pratiquent un métier ici envisagé sous deux de ses aspects principaux. D'abord, la mobilisation, dans le cadre ou en vue d'un spectacle très particulier -"drame musical" plus que simple concert -, de compétences interactionnelles variées : actions conduites par un directeur ou totalement acéphales, répétitions ou rencontres non préparées, suivi d'un plan graphique ou improvisation...Ensuite, l'enseignement délivré à d'autres, souvent plus jeunes, destiné à transmettre la maîtrise des ces compétences. L'enquête, très ciblée, questionne pourtant de vastes notions propres aux sciences humaines ou à l'esthétique : terrain, genre, oralité, transmission, rite ou performance.
Kurzfassung:
The present ethnography focuses on a number of acknowledged musicians in Europe and the US in the domains of jazz and one of its scions known as "improvised music" (Claude Barthélémy, Fred Frith, Joëlle Léandre, Bernard Lubat, Médéric Collignon, Akosh Szelevényi, Michel Portal...). Halfway between informal connections (affinity networks, training by permeation) and institutionalization (Orchestre National de Jazz, Mills College, educational facilities, festivals), these musicians practice a trade conidered here under two of its main facets. First, within the frame of, or in the prospect of a very specific show -let's say a "musical drama" rather than a simple concert-, the ability to muster a variety of interactinal skills in the course of actions conducted by a director or totally non-conducted, unmapped rehearsals or get-togethers, strictly following written plans or improvising... Second, the ability to teach others, mostly younger people, with a view to transmitting the mastery of those skills. The present inquity is sharply focused; still it questions vast notions pertaining to social sciences or aesthetics, such as fieldwork, genre, orality, transmission, ritual or performance.
