    Abstract: Ferdinand Tönnies, der mit seinem Werk „Gemeinschaft und Gesellschaft" von 1887 überwiegend als Soziologe und Philosoph wahrgenommen wird, hat sich schon recht früh mit staatswissenschaftlichen Problemen beschäftigt. Dabei kommt für Tönnies dem Staat nur eine instrumentale Rolle zu. Damit rückt er weit ab von den Traditionen des Kulturliberalismus im Kaiserreich. Im Gegensatz zur liberalen Demokratie erkennt Tönnies eine Fokussierung auf eine soziale Demokratie: Eine Entwicklung zum „Staat der Sozialreform". Er spricht dem Staat die Legitimation ab, als sittliche Macht im Hegelschen Sinne aufzutreten. Der Staat ist für Tönnies unlösbar mit der Gesellschaft verbunden. Es gibt keine innere Distanz, die ihm eine eigenständige externe Rolle gegenüber der Gesellschaft ermöglichen würde. Er ist vielmehr eine Art Wesensausdruck aller Grundzüge des sozialen Lebens unter den Bedingungen der vom Kürwillen beherrschten Gesellschaft. Er ist dem Interessenkampf von Menschen und Gruppen ausgeliefert, die sich gegenseitig als Mittel ansehen müssen nach Maßgabe des Kalküls des Eigeninteresses und der Gewinnmaximierung.     Abstract: In den gesellschaftlichen und politischen Diskussionen wird oft eine direkte Beziehung zwischen Religion und Gewalt erörtert, die darauf zielt, die Religion schlechthin als Ursache der Gewaltbereitschaft anzuprangern. Die Quellen der monotheistischen Religionen Judentum, Christentum und Islam beinhalten ein Gewaltpotenzial, das im Laufe der Geschichte immer wieder von ihren Anhängern instrumentalisiert wurde. Diese Quellen können wir verstehen, wenn wir an ihre Aussagen nicht mit unserer heutigen Denkweise herangehen, sondern versuchen, sie aus der Perspektive ihrer Entstehungzeit zu erfassen. In diesem Buch haben sich christliche und muslimische Theologinnen und Theologen dem Thema Gewalt in der Bibel und im Koran gestellt. Anhand von Textbeispielen und hermeneutischen Zugangsweisen werden die Probleme angesprochen und Möglichkeiten zum Verständnis und zur Auslegung erörtert.

    Abstract: The Yakama Nation of present-day Washington State has responded to more than a century of historical trauma with a resurgence of grassroots activism and cultural revitalization. This path-breaking ethnography shifts the conversation from one of victimhood to one of ongoing resistance and resilience as a means of healing the soul wounds of settler colonialism. Yakama Rising: Indigenous Cultural Revitalization, Activism, and Healing argues that Indigenous communities themselves have the answers to the persistent social problems they face. This book contributes to understanding Indigenous social change by articulating the premise that grassroots activism and cultural revitalization are powerful examples of decolonization. Michelle Jacob employs ethnographic case studies to demonstrate the tension between reclaiming traditional cultural practices and adapting to change. Through interviewees' narratives, she carefully tacks back and forth between the atrocities of colonization and the remarkable actions of individuals committed to sustaining Yakama heritage.     Abstract: This book responds to the often loud debates about the place of Muslims in Western Europe by proposing an analysis based in institutions, including schools, courts, hospitals, the military, electoral politics, the labor market, and civic education courses. The contributors consider the way people draw on practical schemas regarding others in their midst who are often categorized as Muslims. Chapters based on fieldwork and policy analysis across several countries examine how people interact in their everyday work lives, where they construct moral boundaries, and how they formulate policies concerning tolerable diversity, immigration, discrimination, and political representation. Rather than assuming that each country has its own national ideology that explains such interactions, contributors trace diverse pathways along which institutions complicate or disrupt allegedly consistent national ideologies. These studies shed light on how Muslims encounter particular faces and facets of the state as they go about their lives, seeking help and legitimacy as new citizens of a fast-changing Europe.

    Abstract: In den bisherigen Forschungen zu »muslimischen« Denkerinnen und Denkern sind die dichotomisch verwendeten Begriffe »Moderne« und »Islam« zentral. Dabei wird »Moderne« meist mit »westlich«, »säkular«, »reformerisch« und neuerdings »global« gleichgesetzt - und »Islam« mit »orientalisch«, »religiös«, »traditionell« und »partikular«.Abbas Poya nimmt einen Wechsel der »Erzählperspektive« vor. Anhand von vier gegenwärtig wichtigen iranischen Autoren - Al-e Ahmad, Shari'ati, Sorush und Malekyan - untersucht er den Transformationsprozess in den heutigen islamisch-intellektuellen Diskursen im Lichte global vorherrschender postkolonialer Zustände und zeigt, dass ihre Gedankengänge durch die sogenannten islamischen/orientalischen Ideen ebenso geformt sind wie durch die vermeintlich säkularen/westlichen Vorstellungen
    Abstract: In previous research on »Muslim« thinkers and philosophers, the dichotomously applied terms »modern« and »Islam« are central. Therein, »modern« is mostly equated with »Western«, »secular«, »reformist«, and, most recently, »global«, whereas »Islam« is equated with »oriental«, »religious«, »traditional«, and »particular«.Abbas Poya breaks from the »narrative perspective«: On the basis of four current and important Iranian writers - Al-e Ahmad, Shari'ati, Sorush, and Malekyan - he examines the transformation process in today's Islamic intellectual discourses in the light of global dominant post-colonial conditions and shows that the thought processes are shaped by so-called Islamic/oriental ideas as well as by supposed secular/western ideas

    Abstract: Die Teilhabe am Herrschaftsprozess ist für demokratische Gesellschaften von zentraler Bedeutung. Staat und Gesellschaft müssen miteinander verknüpft sein, sonst gerät die Legitimation politischer Entscheidungen in Gefahr. Die politische Teilhabe – etwa in Wahlen und Parteien – ist in Deutschland aber eng an die Staatsbürgerschaft geknüpft. Ausländer im rechtlichen Sinne dürfen nicht an allen politischen Entscheidungen mitwirken. Unter den Bedingungen einer fortschreitenden europäischen Integration und einer empirisch evidenten Zuwanderungsgesellschaft stellt sich daher die Frage, wie es um die Legitimation politischer Entscheidungen und um die politisch-demokratische Repräsentation derjenigen bestellt ist, die zwar in Deutschland wohnen, aber de jure nur eingeschränkte Teilhaberechte haben. Diese Ethik steht ein für die Rechte der Unterdrückten, für die Anerkennung des Anderen und die Infragestellung der jüdischen Souveränität als alleinigem Bezugsrahmen der israelischen Staatsraison. Aus der Erfahrung von Diaspora und Pluralität heraus plädiert Butler für einen Staat, in dem Israelis und Palästinenser, Juden und Nichtjuden gleichberechtigt zusammenleben.     Abstract: As the European public sphere becomes increasingly shaped by debates surrounding Islam, this book asks whether it is possible to rethink the public sphere, conceiving of it not as a site of consensus, but as one of antagonism and confrontation. With rich case studies drawn from various sites across Europe, such as France, Germany, Italy, Spain and the UK, Islam and Public Controversy in Europe examines a range of public controversies, including mosque construction, ritual slaughter, Sharia councils, burqa bans and love and marriage, to address the question of how cases of 'Islamic difference' might be addressed outside the confines of established normative discourses, which focus on freedom of religion, minority rights or multiculturalism. Acknowledging the creative role of dissent, this book explores the manner in which public controversies shed new light on understandings of aesthetics, animal rights, freedom of speech, the uniformity of secular law and modes of individual emancipation.Developing an innovative conceptual framework and elaborating the notion of controversy as a methodological tool, Islam and Public Controversy in Europe draws our attention to the processes of interaction, confrontation and mutual transformation, thereby opening up a new horizon for rethinking difference and pluralism in Europe. As such, it will appeal to scholars across the social sciences with interests in religion, integration, cultural difference and the public sphere. This volume goes beyond particular instances of the participation of Muslims in public space to exploring the roles and agency of Muslims in reshaping various national public spheres as well as the evolving, and contested, processes of Europeanization. Wie beeinflussen religiöse Akteure Demokratisierung? Welche Faktoren bedingen ihre Einflussnahme? Der vorliegende Band bietet erste Antworten auf diese Fragen. Hierfür wird ein theoretisch-konzeptionelles Analyseraster zur Untersuchung der Rolle religiöser Akteure im Regimewandel entwickelt. In keiner der behandelten jungen mehrheitlich christlichen, christlich-orthodoxen oder muslimischen Demokratien haben religiöse Akteure das Ergebnis des jeweiligen Transformationsprozesses bestimmt. Sie haben durch ihre politische und gesellschaftliche Einflussnahme aber zu Prozessen der Erosion autoritärer Herrschaft und zur Demokratisierung beigetragen. Die Möglichkeiten religiöser Akteure auf Demokratisierung einzuwirken, hängen vor allem von ihrer Organisationsform und der formalrechtlichen sowie de facto Stellung gegenüber dem politischen Regime ab.     Abstract: Die ‚Integrationsdebatte‘ nach Thilo Sarrazins Buch ‚Deutschland schafft sich ab‘ offenbarte ein Paradox – eine wachsende Akzeptanz des kulturellen Pluralismus, besonders unter jüngeren Menschen, und zugleich massive kulturelle Ressentiments in der Einwanderungsgesellschaft. Der renommierte Migrationsforscher und Politikberater Klaus J. Bade beleuchtet Ursachen, Hintergründe und bedrohliche Folgen dieser paradoxen Spannung. Ihr Ergebnis ist eine gefährliche Ersatzdebatte anstelle der verdrängten Diskussion um die neue Identität in der Einwanderungsgesellschaft. Das Buch beschreibt diese Ersatzdebatte als ‚negative Integration‘: die Selbstvergewisserung der Mehrheit durch die Ausgrenzung einer großen – muslimischen – Minderheit. Die Politik verkennt die Brisanz dieser negativen Integration, solange sie ‚Integrationspolitik‘ nicht als Gesellschaftspolitik für alle versteht. Mit scharfem Blick identifiziert Bade Zusammenhänge von Wortgewalt und Tatgewalt am Beispiel antimultikulturell und antiislamisch motivierter Bluttaten aus jüngster Zeit: dem Breivik-Massaker in Norwegen und den Serienmorden des Nationalsozialistischen Untergrunds (NSU) in Deutschland. Mit der Zunahme von Integrationserfolgen und der pragmatischen Akzeptanz kultureller Vielfalt sind in Deutschland auch aus kultureller Angst geborene fremdenfeindliche Abwehrhaltungen gewachsen, vor allem gegenüber dem Schreckgespenst Islam. Im Umgang mit den Themen Einwanderung, Integration und Islam ist ein kritischer Punkt erreicht.

    Abstract: Da die beiden Begriffe „Kultur“ und „Staat“ über eine große inhaltliche Breite verfügen, ist das Feld der Interpretationsmöglichkeiten außerordentlich weit. Wichtiger als der quantitative Umfang der Begriffe aber ist selbstverständlich deren qualitative Bedeutung: Sowohl vom Begriff der Kultur als auch vom Begriff des Staates lässt sich sagen, dass sie im eigentlichen Wortsinne fundamental sind. Sie legen das Fundament für das Zusammenleben der Menschen – mit Kultur ist dabei die (oft unsichtbare und doch überall wirksame) Totalität menschlicher Hervorbringungen gemeint, mit Staat die institutionelle Grundordnung einer Gemeinschaft, welche die wichtigsten Regeln der Herrschaft in einem bestimmten Territorium verbindlich festschreibt. Der Zusammenhang zwischen Kultur und Staat, genauer: Die Abhängigkeit des Staates von der Kultur, ist offensichtlich: Staaten sind immer auch Ausdruck kultureller Werte und Ideale. Ein besonderes Kulturverständnis schlägt sich in aller Regel auch in einem besonderen Staatsverständnis nieder; dabei erweisen sich die primär ideellen Werte einer Kultur häufig sogar als prioritär gegenüber ihrer materiellen Verwirklichung in Institutionen. In jedem Fall gilt, dass beide, Staat und Kultur, aufs Engste miteinander verzahnt und ineinander verwoben sind. Wie dies von großen (Kultur-)Theoretikern des 20. Jahrhunderts gesehen worden ist, dokumentiert dieser Band
