    Kurzfassung: Main description: In der jüngeren Forschung haben die beiden klassischen Hypothesen einer Aufstiegsgeschichte Davids und einer Thronfolgeerzählung an Überzeugungskraft verloren. Damit rücken die Texte in II Sam 1-5 verstärkt in den Blick, denen eine Schlüsselstellung für die literarische Genese der Davidüberlieferung zukommt. Die vorliegende Studie ermittelt einen ersten durchlaufenden und noch vorexilischen Darstellungszusammenhang, der im 7. Jh. v. Chr. entstanden ist. Entsprechend erklärt sie das Doppelkönigtum Davids über Israel und Juda als eine protodeuteronomistische Gründungsgeschichte der späten Königszeit. Die Untersuchung schließt mit einer redaktionsgeschichtlichen Skizze der Daviderzählungen im zweiten Samuelbuch und einer Revision der geschichtlichen Zeugnisse.
    Kurzfassung: Main description: Recent research has led to a weakening of the two classical hypotheses on the story of David's rise and a succession narrative. Instead, attention has focussed on the texts in II Samuel 1-5, which are seen as being of crucial importance for the literary genesis of the story of David. The present study reveals a first continuous account from before the time of exile, which was produced in the 7th century BC. Thus it explains David's double kingship of Israel and Juda as a proto-deuteronomistic foundation narrative from the late Age of Kings. The study closes with a sketch of the editorial history of the David narratives in II Samuel and a revision of the historical records.

    Kurzfassung: For two decades now, Stephen C. Headley has been one of the most original and systematic ethnographers of Javanese religion and cultural history. No one in contemporary Javanese ethnography has combed through the annals of nineteenth and twentieth century scholarship with as careful an eye for the variety of Javanese traditions. None combines this historical ethnography with as careful and unusual body of contemporary ethnography. Headley's new book brings these long-developed skills to bear on contemporary religious change in the Surakarta region of Central Java. In his analysis of the Durga ritual complex, Headley sheds light on one of the most unusual court traditions to have survived in an era of deepening Islamization. Headley's analysis of this ritual complex, and its implications for our understanding of popular Javanese religion, deserves to be read by all serious students of Java, as well as anyone interested in religion in Indonesia. However, Headley moves well beyond this unusual ritual complex, to take us through the twists and turns of religious culture and politics in what is one of the richest but also most troubled of cultural regions in Java.     Kurzfassung: Als "einen der interessantesten katholischen Missionare im Südlichen Afrika" bezeichnet die Historikerin Joy Brain den Tiroler Priester Franz Mayr in ihrem Vorwort zu dieser umfangreichen Quellenedition. Die gesammelten, aus zahlreichen Archiven im In- und Ausland stammenden Schriften Mayrs, umfassen Briefe, Tagebucheinträge, Auszüge aus Chroniken, seine in Missions- und ethnologischen Zeitschriften und Tageszeitungen erschienenen Artikel sowie zahlreiche zeitgenössische Photographien. Obwohl unser Land bzw. die Habsburger-Monarchie selbst keine Kolonien auf diesem Kontinent besaß, wirkte doch eine beträchtliche Anzahl von ihnen u. a. in katholischen Stationen. Ihre Rolle in der Interaktion mit der einheimischen Bevölkerung und die Wirkung ihrer Missionsartikel auf das Afrikabild ist bisher nahezu unerforscht geblieben. Mayr war nur einer jener Österreicher und Österreicherinnen, die im Zuge der katholischen Missionseuphorie des 19. und beginnenden 20. Jahrhunderts ausreisten, um Afrikaner und Afrikanerinnen zum Christentum zu "bekehren". Er wurde 1865 in der Osttiroler Gemeinde Nussdorf geboren und verbrachte seine Gymnasialzeit in Brixen, wo er auch das Priesterseminar absolvierte. Ab 1890 wirkte er in der ehemaligen britischen Kolonie Natal (Südafrika), in Südrhodesien (heutiges Zimbabwe) und in Swaziland, wo er 1914 einem Mordanschlag zum Opfer fiel. Unter seiner Leitung entstanden mehrere Missionsstationen u. a. das Projekt "Maryvale", ein Dorf für die einheimischen katholischen Zulus, heute ein Stadtteil von Pietermaritzburg. Über die vorhandenen Quellen erhält man Einblick in den Alltag des Missionars, Informationen über Hemmnisse seiner Arbeit und über Erfolgserlebnisse, seine Einstellung zur afrikanischen Bevölkerung, zur jeweiligen Kolonialregierung, zu anderen Religionsgemeinschaften oder über seinen persönlichen Gemütszustand. F. Mayr schrieb mehrere Bücher in afrikanischen Sprachen, hatte ein Faible für Musik und Photographie und sammelte leidenschaftlich ethnologische Gegenstände, die er teilweise afrikanischen Museen überließ, teilweise für Ausstellungen nach Europa sandte. Erst kürzlich entdeckte man im Herbarium der "Universität von Natal" eine Pflanzensammlung, die er angelegt hatte. Sie wird derzeit von einer Gruppe von Wissenschaftlern ausgewertet und stellt eine der frühesten Dokumentationen über den Gebrauch von Heilpflanzen der Zulus dar. Mayr was born in the Austrian province of Tyrol in 1865, educated as a priest in the diocese of Brixen and arrived in Natal (South Africa) at the beginning of May 1890, inspired by the work being done there by the Trappist-Monks led by Abbot Franz Pfanner. Mayr was physically handicapped and soon left the trappists but just to offer his services to the vicar apostolic of Natal, Bishop Charles Jolivet, who accepted him for work among the African population. He was sent to Pietermaritzburg then capital of the British colony to take over the care of the African parishioners to bring the "good news" to those who had never heard it. He founded several new mission-stations in Natal, Southern Rhodesia (present day Zimbabwe) and Swaziland where he was killed by a native robber in 1914. Mayr - a man of many talents - was a gifted linguist, studied and published books in several African languages. He was interested in cultural anthropology and collected information about African customs. It is now more than a hundred years since Franz Mayr began his work of evangelisation and scholarship in Southern Africa. Publishing his letters and articles - kept by several archives in Europe - should help to remember a man of the Habsburg-Monarchy who went to preach the gospel to the so called heathen of Africa. Although Austria or Austria-Hungary never owned colonies in Africa many of its inhabitants left their homes to work in catholic mission-stations around the continent. Several introductory chapters in this book explain the particular historical context which has to be put into consideration when reading Mayrs' writings. From there we learn about his life, his work, how he treated the native population, what he thought about other religious congregations around him, the colonialists and about troubles when trying to convince people to believe in the only - the "European God". The missionary deserves to be better known. The present edition of historical sources is to be seen as a most relevant step allowing us to interpret his personality adequately

    Kurzfassung: Saints, their places, the rituals of their veneration - the heroes and martyrs they represent or to whom they are often connected with - and the beliefs in their powers have often been described as being counter-thematic to the constructive issues of modern society in our times. However, in the Middle East - and certainly this is true for many other world regions and other world religions - local saints, Jewish, Christian and Islamic, have gained a very ambiguous status in religious movements, political struggles and events of social re-construction. In the case of Islam, perhaps more openly, modernists and fundamentalists alike attempt to abolish or to re-formulate the agenda of venerating the saints. However, at the same time saints and their localities have become a sort of overcharged symbolic incidence in the modern presence of Islam, in politics, in the media and - perhaps on a more hidden ground - in the struggle of ideas. In this volume historians, islamologists, anthropologists and sociologists give a multiple description of the inherent issues of the unhampered continuity of Muslim saints and their significance.     Kurzfassung: Amalendu Misra shows that while some eminent nationalist leaders were implacably hostile to Muslims, even wholly secular ones were uneasy with India's Muslim past and had a generally unfavourable disposition towards both Muslims and Islam.     Kurzfassung: Im Jahr 2003 fand in der Göttinger Jakobikirche eine hochkarätige und deshalb zu Recht viel beachtete Vorlesungsreihe zur Wirkungsgeschichte der Bibel statt.     Kurzfassung: Annotation, Throughout the Middle East, Islamist charities and social welfare organizations play a major role in addressing the socioeconomic needs of Muslim societies, independently of the state. Through case studies of Islamic medical clinics in Egypt, the Islamic Center Charity Society in Jordan, and the Islah Women's Charitable Society in Yemen, Janine A. Clark examines the structure and dynamics of moderate Islamic institutions and their social and political impact. Questioning the widespread assumption that such organizations primarily serve the poorer classes, Clark argues that these organizations in fact are run by and for the middle class. Rather than the vertical recruitment or mobilization of the poor that they are often presumed to promote, Islamic social institutions play an important role in strengthening social networks that bind middle-class professionals, volunteers, and clients. Ties of solidarity that develop along these horizontal lines foster the development of new social networks and the diffusion of new ideas

    Kurzfassung: Franz Mayr was "one of the most interesting of catholic missionaries in Southern Africa" states Professor Joy Brain ("University of Durban") in the foreword she wrote for this first edition of his writings. Mayr was born in the Austrian province of Tyrol in 1865, educated as a priest in the diocese of Brixen and arrived in Natal (South Africa) at the beginning of May 1890, inspired by the work being done there by the Trappist-Monks led by Abbot Franz Pfanner. Mayr was physically handicapped and soon left the trappists but just to offer his services to the vicar apostolic of Natal, Bishop Charles Jolivet, who accepted him for work among the African population. He was sent to Pietermaritzburg then capital of the British colony to take over the care of the African parishioners to bring the "good news" to those who had never heard it. He founded several new mission-stations in Natal, Southern Rhodesia (present day Zimbabwe) and Swaziland where he was killed by a native robber in 1914. Mayr - a man of many talents - was a gifted linguist, studied and published books in several African languages. He was interested in cultural anthropology and collected information about African customs. It is now more than a hundred years since Franz Mayr began his work of evangelisation and scholarship in Southern Africa. Publishing his letters and articles - kept by several archives in Europe - should help to remember a man of the Habsburg-Monarchy who went to preach the gospel to the so called heathen of Africa. Although Austria or Austria-Hungary never owned colonies in Africa many of its inhabitants left their homes to work in catholic mission-stations around the continent.     Kurzfassung: Als "einen der interessantesten katholischen Missionare im Südlichen Afrika" bezeichnet die Historikerin Joy Brain den Tiroler Priester Franz Mayr in ihrem Vorwort zu dieser umfangreichen Quellenedition. Die gesammelten, aus zahlreichen Archiven im In- und Ausland stammenden Schriften Mayrs, umfassen Briefe, Tagebucheinträge, Auszüge aus Chroniken, seine in Missions- und ethnologischen Zeitschriften und Tageszeitungen erschienenen Artikel sowie zahlreiche zeitgenössische Photographien. Obwohl unser Land bzw. die Habsburger-Monarchie selbst keine Kolonien auf diesem Kontinent besaß, wirkte doch eine beträchtliche Anzahl von ihnen u. a. in katholischen Stationen. Ihre Rolle in der Interaktion mit der einheimischen Bevölkerung und die Wirkung ihrer Missionsartikel auf das Afrikabild ist bisher nahezu unerforscht geblieben. Mayr war nur einer jener Österreicher und Österreicherinnen, die im Zuge der katholischen Missionseuphorie des 19. und beginnenden 20. Jahrhunderts ausreisten, um Afrikaner und Afrikanerinnen zum Christentum zu "bekehren". Er wurde 1865 in der Osttiroler Gemeinde Nussdorf geboren und verbrachte seine Gymnasialzeit in Brixen, wo er auch das Priesterseminar absolvierte. Ab 1890 wirkte er in der ehemaligen britischen Kolonie Natal (Südafrika), in Südrhodesien (heutiges Zimbabwe) und in Swaziland, wo er 1914 einem Mordanschlag zum Opfer fiel. Unter seiner Leitung entstanden mehrere Missionsstationen u. a. das Projekt "Maryvale", ein Dorf für die einheimischen katholischen Zulus, heute ein Stadtteil von Pietermaritzburg. An overview of Taiwan's current religious scene is followed by a comprehensive look at the state of religion in the country prior to the end of World War II and the return of Taiwan to Chinese sovereignty. The remaining essays probe aspects of change within individual religious traditions. The final chapter analyzes changes that took place in the scholarly study and interpretation of religion in Taiwan during the course of the twentieth century.     Kurzfassung: The family is a topical issue for studies of the Ancient world. Family, household and kinship have different connotations in antiquity from their modern ones. This volume expands that discussion to investigate the early Christian family structures within the larger Graeco-Roman context. Particular emphasis is given to how family metaphors, such as 'brotherhood' function to describe relations in early Christian communities. Asceticism and the rejection of sexuality are considered in the context of Christian constructions of the family. Moxnes' volume presents a comprehensive and timely addition to the study of familial and social structures in the Early Christian world, which will certainly stimulate further debate.

    Kurzfassung: In the aftermath of colonial mission, Christianity has come to have widespread acceptance in Southern Tanzania. In this book, Maia Green explores contemporary Catholic practice in a rural community of Southern Tanzania. Setting the adoption of Christianity and the suppression of witchcraft in a historical context, she suggests that power relations established during the colonial period continue to hold between both popular Christianity and orthodoxy, and local populations and indigenous clergy. Paradoxically, while local practices around the constitution of kinship and personhood remain defiantly free of Christian elements, they inform a popular Christianity experienced as a system of substances and practices. This book offers a challenge to idealist and interpretative accounts of African participation in twentieth-century religious forms, and argues for a politically grounded analysis of historical processes. It will appeal widely to scholars and students of anthropology, sociology and African Studies; particularly those interested in religion and kinship.

    Kurzfassung: What was witchcraft? Were witches real? How should witches be identified? How should they be judged? Towards the end of the middle ages these were serious and important questions - and completely new. Between 1430 and 1500, a number of learned 'witch-theorists' attempted to provide the answers to such questions, and of these perhaps the most famous are the Dominican inquisitors Heinrich Institoris and Jacob Sprenger, the authors of the Malleus Maleficarum, or The Hammer of Witches. The Malleus is widely recognised as an important medieval text and is frequently quoted by authors across a wide range of scholarly disciplines. Yet as a source the Malleus presents serious difficulties: it is difficult to understand out of context, and cannot be said to be representative of late medieval learned thinking in general. This, the first book-length study of the original text in English, provides students and scholars with an introduction to this controversial work and to the conceptual world of its authors. Like all witch-theorists, Institoris and Sprenger constructed their witch out of a constellation of pre-existing popular beliefs and learned traditions. Therefore, to understand the Malleus, one must also understand the contemporary and subsequent debates over the reality and nature of witches. Ultimately, this book argues that although the Malleus was a highly idiosyncratic text, with a view of witches very different from that of competing authors, its arguments were powerfully compelling and therefore remained influential long after alternatives were forgotten. Consequently, although focused on a single text, this study has important implications for fifteenth-century witchcraft theory. This is a fascinating work on the Malleus and will be essential to students and academics of late medieval and early modern history, religion and witchcraft studies

    Kurzfassung: In Indonesia, the world's largest Muslim-majority country, Muslims struggle to reconcile radically different sets of social norms and laws, including those derived from Islam, local social norms, and contemporary ideas about gender equality and rule of law. In this 2003 study, John Bowen explores this struggle, through archival and ethnographic research in villages and courtrooms of the Aceh Province, Sumatra, and through interviews with national religious and legal figures. He analyses the social frameworks for disputes about land, inheritance, marriage, divorce, Islamic History and, more broadly, about the relationships between the state and Islam, and between Muslims and non-Muslims. The book speaks to debates carried out in all societies about how people can live together with their deep differences in values and ways of life. It will be welcomed by scholars and students across the social sciences, particularly those interested in anthropology, cultural sociology and political theory.

    Kurzfassung: Mit Blick auf die Geschlechterverhältnisse wird der Islam häufig als modernitätsfeindliches religiöses und kulturelles System verstanden und einem westlichen Emanzipationsverständnis gegenübergestellt. Die Beiträge dieses Bandes zeigen, wie unverzichtbar differenzierende und interdisziplinäre Perspektiven sind, die sich auf die Vielfalt des Islam (auch in Europa), seine unterschiedlichen religiösen Strömungen, Lebensformen und Vorstellungen von Geschlechterordnungen richten. Diskutiert wird die Beziehung zwischen Islam, Geschlecht und Menschenrechten. Dabei kommt das Potenzial der reform-islamischen Ansätze zur Sprache, die nicht nur eine Herausforderung für die politischen Richtungen des Islam darstellen, sondern sich auch am Konzept der Gleichheit bei der Auslegung des islamischen Rechts im Hinblick auf die Geschlechterverhältnisse orientieren

Damit stellen sie ihn in einen Wertekanon, der seit der europäischen Aufklärung zur Zivilreligion gewachsen ist.     Kurzfassung: The development of Early Christian rituals in connection with death and burial has so far not sufficiently been explored. Volp’s study focuses on the surviving literary sources—both pagan and Christian—, together with inscriptions and other archaeological remains while taking into account recent results from science and humanities. A summary of death and ritual in the ancient Mediterranean religions is followed by detailed analyses of the Christian sources from the 2nd to the 5th century. Thus, basic developments are being discovered which led to and accompanied the forming of Christian rituals, such as ritual purity or the social structure of family and society. Being the first such interdisciplinary approach, it also represents the first monographic work on the topic since 1941
