    Kurzfassung: This book brings together an international team of leading translation teachers and researchers to address concerns that are central in translation pedagogy. The authors address the location and weighting in translation curricula of learning and training, theory and practice, and the relationships between the profession, its practitioners, its professors and scholars. They explore the concepts of translator competence, skills and capacities and two papers report empirical studies designed to explore effects of the use of translation in language teaching. These are complemented by papers on student achievement and attitudes to translation in programmes that are not primarily designed with prospective translators in mind, and by papers that discuss language teaching within dedicated translation programmes.     Kurzfassung: Main description: In dieser Arbeit werden die Universaltheorien Niklas Luhmanns (1927-1998) und Charles Peirces (1839-1914) zum ersten Mal grundlegend aufeinander bezogen. Auf der Basis einer kritischen funktionalen Analyse von System- und Zeichentheorie wird ein Zeichensystem neu konstruiert, dessen Auflöse- und Rekombinationsvermögen höher ist als das der genannten Einzeldisziplinen. Die theoretisch erzielten Ergebnisse lassen sich als Grundlage für konkrete sprach- und literaturwissenschaftliche oder auch soziologische Problemstellungen verwenden. Zudem kann das Buch als Einführung in das Denken Luhmanns und Peirces gelesen werden.
    Kurzfassung: Main description: This study is the first to make a systematic attempt to relate the universal theories of Niklas Luhmann (1927-1998) and Charles S. Peirce (1839-1914) to one another. On the basis of a critical functional analysis of systems theory and semiotic theory, a newly designed semiotic system is proposed that displays a higher resolution and recombination potential than the individual disciplines involved. The theoretical results can be used as a foundation for dealing with concrete linguistic, literary, or sociological problems. In addition, the book can be read as an introduction to the thinking of Luhmann and Peirce.

    Kurzfassung: Es kommt nicht oft vor, dass man innerhalb einer Arbeit sowohl einen generativ-grammatischen als auch einen soziolinguistischen Ansatz findet. Die vorliegende Studie versucht diesen Brückenschlag anhand von Daten aus der französischen Interrogativsyntax, u.a. zur wh-in-situ-Form, zur stilistischen Inversion, zur langen Extraktion und zur que-qui-Problematik. Gradierte Grammatikalitätsurteile bilden die empirische Hauptdatenquelle, wobei auch Daten aus qualitativen Interviewerhebungen und Lesezeitmessungen einbezogen werden. Zugleich werden methodologische Fragen zur Messbarkeit von Grammatikalität behandelt. Die Auswertung des empirischen Materials revidiert und präzisiert einige vertraute Auffassungen. Beispielsweise erweist sich die Evidenzgrundlage für die Annahme von LF-Bewegung bei wh-in-situ-Strukturen des Französischen als überraschend dünn. In einem weiteren Schritt wird der Einfluss externer Faktoren auf die Grammatikalitätsurteile statistisch untersucht. Hierbei beschränkt sich die Arbeit nicht auf den Standardsatz soziodemographischer Merkmale. Sie bezieht das Lebensstilkonzept aus der soziokulturellen Theorie von Pierre Bourdieu ein, das sich in der Tat als besonders relevant für die Identifikation und Erklärung von Variationsphänomenen in der Grammatik (z. B. Präferenzen für bestimmte Wortstellungsvarianten) erweist. Diese Studie zeigt, wie die gemeinsame Berücksichtigung einer grammatiktheoretischen und sozialstrukturellen Analyse zu einem präziseren Verständnis der französischen wh-Interrogation führt.

    Kurzfassung: Classifier constructions are universal to sign languages and exhibit unique properties that arise from the nature of the visual-gestural modality. The major goals are to bring to light critical issues related to the study of classifier constructions and to present state-of-the-art linguistic and psycholinguistic analyses of these constructions. It is hoped that by doing so, more researchers will be inspired to investigate the nature of classifier constructions across signed languages and further explore the unique aspects of these forms. The papers in this volume discuss the following issues: *how sign language classifiers differ from spoken languages; *cross-linguistic variation in sign language classifier systems; *the role of gesture; *the nature of morpho-syntactic and phonological constraints on classifier constructions; *the grammaticization process for these forms; and *the acquisition of classifier forms.     Kurzfassung: This volume presents both an analysis of how identities are built, represented and negotiated in narrative, as well as a theoretical reflection on the links between narrative discourse and identity construction. The data for the book are Mexican immigrants' personal experience narratives and chronicles of their border crossings into the United States. Embracing a view of identity as a construct firmly grounded in discourse and interaction, the author examines and illustrates the multiple threads that connect the local expression and negotiation of identity to the wider social contexts that frame the experience of migration, from material conditions of life in the United States to mainstream discourses about race and color. The analysis reveals how identities emerge in discourse through the interplay of different levels of expression, from implicit adherence to narrative styles and ways of telling, to explicit negotiation of membership categories.

    Kurzfassung: Main description: This study investigates misunderstandings between Germans and Arabs caused by politeness. The data are mostly conversations in the course of private social gatherings. Gumperz' approach to intercultural communication and Brown/Levinson's theory of politeness supply the theoretical framework for the study. The two-sided concept of 'face' - distancing (negative face) and rapprochement (positive face) - points up cultural differences. Germans attach great importance to privacy and individuality, while Arabs prefer in-group relations.

    Kurzfassung: Main description: Die mediale Kommunikation wird im "Optischen Zeitalter" bzw. im Zeichen der "Bilderflut" beherrscht von den Text-Bild-Medien (Zeitung, Zeitschrift, Buch, Plakat, Comics und anderen Heftchen) sowie den Bild-Text-Medien (Film, Fernsehen, Videoclip, Internet). In ihnen wird versucht, neben dem Text auch eine Bildsprache einzusetzen, die als visual esperanto oder als Anhäufung von "Visiotypen" Allgemeinverständlichkeit zu garantieren scheint. Gefragt ist deshalb ein Zugang zu den Bildern, Texten und Text-Bild-Kombinationen, zu den gängigen Theorien dazu, zu den üblichen Umsetzungen der Theorien in die Praxis der genannten Medien. Schließlich wird das Verhältnis von Sprache und Kunst im 20. Jahrhundert beleuchtet.
    Kurzfassung: Main description: Today, in a 'Visual Age' 'inundated' by images, media communication is dominated by the text-picture media (newspapers, magazines, books, posters, comics, etc.) and the picture-text media (films, TV, video clips, Internet). In these media, the attempt is made to establish a typical visual idiom alongside the text, a visual Esperanto or accumulation of 'visiotypes' designed as a guarantee of universal comprehensibility. Hence there is a need for an approach providing access to the images, texts and text-picture combinations, the theories about them in currency, and the central realizations of these theories in the praxis of the said media. The book sets out to provide such access, casting light in its later chapters on the relationship between language and art in the 20th century.

In ihnen wird versucht, neben dem Text auch eine Bildsprache einzusetzen, die als visual esperanto oder als Anhäufung von "Visiotypen" Allgemeinverständlichkeit zu garantieren scheint. Gefragt ist deshalb ein Zugang zu den Bildern, Texten und Text-Bild-Kombinationen, zu den gängigen Theorien dazu, zu den üblichen Umsetzungen der Theorien in die Praxis der genannten Medien.     Kurzfassung: From advertising to health education campaigns, sex and sexual imagery now permeate every aspect of culture. Striptease Culture explores this 'sexualization' of contemporary life, relating it to wider changes in post-war society. Divided into three sections, Striptease Culture first traces the development of pornography, following its movement from elite to mass culture and the contemporary fascination with 'porno-chic'. In part two McNair considers popular cultural forms of sexual representation in the media. Moving from backlash elements in straight male culture and changing images of women to the representation of gays in contemporary film and television shows such as Ellen or Queer as Folk , McNair argues that the high profile of sexuality in contemporary culture, rather than evidence of moral decline, is a positive expression of post-war liberalism and the advance of feminism and gay rights, as well as a key contributor to public health education in the era of HIV and AIDS. In part three, McNair turns to the uses of sexuality in contemporary art, examining the artistic 'striptease' of Jeff Koons and others, who have used their own naked bodies in their work.; McNair also considers how feminist and gay artists have employed sexuality in the critique and transformation of patriarchy. In a concluding chapter, McNair considers the implications of the rise of striptease culture for the future of sexual politics

    Kurzfassung: Main description: Die Arbeit zeigt, daß interkulturelle Kommunikation nicht - wie gemeinhin angenommen - notwendigerweise problematisch ist. Mittels Mikroanalysen authentischer Dissenssequenzen wird nachgewiesen, daß Gesprächsteilnehmer in deutsch-dänischen Verhandlungen über nationale, kulturelle und sprachliche Unterschiede hinweg im Stande sind, selbst potenziell problematische Sequenzen zu meistern. Dies verdeutlicht, daß es einer stärkeren Differenzierung des Feldes interkulturelle Kommunikation bedarf, um der Komplexität des Untersuchungsgegenstandes gerecht zu werden.
    Kurzfassung: Main description: The study shows that, contrary to received thinking on the point, intercultural communication is not necessarily problematic. Micro-analyses of authentic dissent sequences show that, despite their national, cultural, and linguistic differences, participants in German-Danish negotiations are capable of mastering even potentially problematic sequences. This points the necessity for a more differentiated approach to the field of intercultural communication if justice is to be done to the complexity of the subject.

    Kurzfassung: Main description: Anhand der Untersuchung von Vorwurfsaktivitäten ("in situ Vorwürfe", "Frotzeleien" und Rekonstruktionen vergangener Vorwurfsinteraktionen in "Beschwerdegeschichten") werden prosodische, grammatische, rhetorisch-stilistische Verfahren und deren Funktionen in ihrer alltäglichen Verwendung erforscht. Nach einer Analyse der Konstitution dieser Vorwurfsgattungen werden Konsequenzen für eine Theorie kommunikativer Praxis gezogen und Aspekte, wie die gattungsspezifische Funktion grammatischer Strukturen, die Interaktion prosodischer und syntaktischer Verfahren bei der Herstellung kommunikativer Bedeutung und die Rolle indexikalischer Zeichen bei der Bedeutungsaushandlung diskutiert.
    Kurzfassung: Main description: On the basis of a study of reproach activities ('in situ reproaches', 'mock reproaches' and reconstructions of previous reproach interactions in 'complaint stories') the monograph examines prosodic, grammatical, rhetorical/stylistic processes and their functions in everyday usage. Following an analysis of the constitution of these reproach genres the study charts the consequences for a theory of communicative practice and discusses aspects such as the genre-specific function of grammatical structures, the interaction between prosodic and syntactic procedures in the production of communicative meaning, and the role of indexical signs in the negotiation of meaning.

    Kurzfassung: Main description: The triumphant arrival of the Ottoman Turks before the gates of Vienna generated a spate of widely variegated writings almost too manifold to be surveyed from a present-day viewpoint and encompassing all the material resources of communication available at the time. As such this body of writing may be legitimately regarded as a transnational paradigm of early modern public communication. The studies in this volume present the results of a colloquium organized by the Wolfenbüttel Research Group on the Renaissance and the Hungarian Academy of Sciences. They are interdisciplinary in nature and international in their perspective and examine both the actors involved in the confrontation between Turks and Europeans and the authors, styles, problems, lines of tradition and reception modalities identifiable in the literature it generated.

    Kurzfassung: Dariusz Galasinski employs a discourse analytical approach to the study of deception in The Language of Deception. The book focuses on the deceptive messages themselves -- how language is used to deceive others and what kinds of linguistic devices are used. Galasinski develops a theory of deception based on his extensive study of debates and interviews of American and British politicians. Actual exchanges such as one in which a politician is asked the same question 14 times and evades it 14 times provide fascinating insight into deceptive linguistic practices
