Abstract: This first ever queer history of St Ives weaves together biography with art and social history to shine new light on a pivotal era in the development of British modernism. At its centre is the sculptor John Milne (1931-1978), who arrived in the town in 1952 to work as an assistant to Barbara Hepworth.0Hidden behind 20-foot-high granite walls, Milne's house, Trewyn, became a meeting point for queer figures from the arts as well as the scene of legendary parties. The large cast - both queer and otherwise - featured in Queer St Ives and Other Stories includes artists Francis Bacon, Alan Lowndes, Marlow Moss, Patrick Procktor, Mark Tobey, Keith Vaughan and Brian Wall; Whitechapel Art Gallery director Bryan Robertson; actors Keith Barron and Richard Wattis; potter Janet Leach; and writers Tony Warren and Richard Blake Brown. There is also the extraordinary Julian Nixon, a queer Everyman whose involvement in the group has been little explored until now.0Based on original interviews and previously unpublished letters and diaries, Queer St Ives and Other Stories reveals a fascinating, previously undocumented history, adding vital new insights into the history of this fabled Cornish art colony. Abstract: Spanning major pre-Columbian cultures of Colombia, and featuring artworks made in this region--from cast gold pendants and ceramic effigies to modern Indigenous stools, barkcloths and featherworks--The Portable Universe/El Universo en tus Manos: Thought and Splendor of Indigenous Colombia recasts how we approach ancient Colombian art. Featuring a cover design with tip-on images, the book is arranged so as to envelop the works with life and meaning and guide readers to different ways of understanding the world and our place in it. It includes contributions by Indigenous Colombians, historians, ethnographers, archaeologists, and art historians. The Portable Universe/El Universo en tus Manos recaptures some of the knowledge of Indigenous American cultures and presents new historical findings, drawing heavily on contemporary Indigenous understandings to evoke a worldview in which these ancient pieces make sense and have power today

Abstract: "Walter F. White led two lives: one as a leader of the Harlem Renaissance and the NAACP in the early twentieth century; the other as a white newspaperman who covered lynching crimes in the Deep South at the blazing height of racial violence. Born mixed race and with very fair skin and straight hair, White was able to "pass" for white. He leveraged this ambiguity as a reporter, bringing to light the darkest crimes in America and helping to plant the seeds of the civil rights movement. White's risky career led him to lead a double life. He was simultaneously a second-class citizen subject to Jim Crow laws at home and a widely respected professional with full access to the white world at work. His life was fraught with internal and external conflict--much like the story of race in America. Starting out as an obscure activist, White ultimately became Black America's most prominent leader. A character study of White's life and career with all these complexities has never been rendered, until now."--Amazon

Abstract: "From prehistoric bone flutes to Confucian bell-sets, from ancient divination to his beloved qin, this book presents translations of thirteen seminal essays on musical subjects by Jao Tsung-i. In language as elegant and refined as the ancient texts he so admired, his journey takes readers through Buddhist incantation, the philosophy of musical instruments, acoustical numerology, lyric poetry, historical and sociological contexts, manuscript studies, dance choreography, repertoire formulation, and opera texts. His voice is authoritative and intimate, the expert crafting his arguments, both accessible and sophisticated, succinct and richly tapestried; and concealed within a deft modesty is a thinker privileging us with his most profound observation. The musician's musician, the scholar's scholar, bold yet cautious, flamboyant yet restrained, a man for all seasons, a harmoniousness of time and place"--

Abstract: "This book explores the colourful past, present and future of an instrument that is, quite literally, close to our hearts. The stethoscope has become the symbol of medicine itself, but how did this come to be? What makes the stethoscope such a familiar and yet charismatic object? Drawing from a range of fields including history, anthropology, science, technology and sound studies, the book illustrates the variety of roles the stethoscope has played over time. It shows that the stethoscope is not, and has never been, a single entity. It is used to a variety of ends, serves a number of purposes and is open to many interpretations. This is the key to the stethoscope's enduring presence in the medical and popular imagination"--Publisher's website

Abstract: "TautukKonik / Looking Back is a project to collaboratively create a portrait using repatriated photographs and Inuit narratives in Inuktitut and English interpreting life during a transitional time in northern Labrador. The Nunatsiavut Creative Group was formed in 2017 to weave together Inuit stories and recollections with photographs taken by Candace Cochrane of Inuit life on the north coast of Labrador between 1969 and 1986. Community researcher Andrea Procter connected Cochrane with the group of Inuit leaders and storytellers, all of whom are passionate about sharing and teaching Inuit history and culture to their children and grandchildren. Over the next five years, Candace Cochrane, Andrea Procter, and the Creative Group reclaimed and resituated the photographs with Inuit stories in a truly collaborative way. Together, they have created an inspired portrait of time and place in northern Labrador."--

Abstract: "The Fur Trader is a critical edition of Einar Odd Mortensen Sr.'s personal narrative detailing the years (1925-28) he spent as a free trader at posts in Pine Bluff and Oxford Lake in Manitoba during the waning days of the fur trade. Mortensen's original narrative has been translated from Norwegian to English, and supplemented with a scholarly introduction, thorough annotations, a bibliography, and a reading guide. This additional material presents the author as a product of Norwegian culture at the time, and is intended to guide the reader through a close reading of Mortensen's interpretations of the Indian Residential School system, the people he encounters, and Indigenous participation in the First World War. Mortensen's insights and experiences will be of interest to scholars, students, and enthusiasts of the fur trade, and will also make contributions to literary, Indigenous, and Scandinavian studies."

Abstract: "The book is a history of how people in the territory that is now Canada have interacted with all that is non-human since the last ice age. It takes as its jumping off point the idea that the primary human interest in nature is getting the resources needed to survive: in other words, food and shelter. So concentrating on the ways in which societies in what we now call Canada have shaped access to nature in order to achieve subsistence (or survival), and the things that flow from that allows us to understand much of the human-nature relationship in this place over time. The book starts with the retreat of the glaciers and the assembling of the natural environment of Canada. It then looks at the means of survival and the different impacts on the land of Indigenous people and of pre-industrial European colonizing societies. Industrial capitalism in the later nineteenth century encouraged a new ordering and control of nature, while science both facilitated and challenged this and its effects. The latter half of the book examines the results: a massive re-engineering of nature, the development of new chemicals and materials and their presence in the environment as waste and pollution, the conservation, preservation and environmental movements, and the attempts, up to our present-day and including the crisis of climate change, to reconcile economic development with environmental protection. The book is written in a lively style that will be accessible to undergraduate students. It features a further reading section that both students and scholars new to the field will find useful and over 65 maps and illustrations. It is the first such book to propose an overall framework for understanding Canadian environmental history."--

Abstract: "What did a woman who lived and worked under slavery know about her ‘owner’ in the Dutch Republic? What did an owner of a sugar factory in Amsterdam know about the circumstances under which the sugar he processed was grown? And what did a freedom fighter on Curaçao know about the struggle for equal civil rights in Europe? Under Dutch rule during the colonial era, more than a million men, women and children from Asia and Africa were enslaved and shipped to the other side of the world. Very little is known about their lives. Using a variety of sources, Slavery provides a portrait of ten people from this period: people who suffered under the slavery system, people who rose in resistance against it and people who profited from it. This broad palette of individual experiences reveals diverse facets of the Dutch history of slavery and gives us a unique isight into the societal reality of the time"

Abstract: During colonial slavery, millions of people were reduced to the possession of another. The life stories of only a part of all those involved can be found. In an exhibition, the Rijksmuseum focuses on ten historical persons, known and less well-known. With this personal view, the museum wants to provide slavery with faces and make the universal, timeless relevance of this history tangible. How should we imagine the harsh life of a man in slavery on a plantation in Brazil in the seventeenth century? Or the luxurious life of a Dutch slave trader at the same time? Or that of a woman who managed to flee the plantation? This richly illustrated publication describes the lives of ten people who were part of the Dutch colonial history of slavery and who are central to the exhibition Slavery in the Rijksmuseum. We meet, among others, the African João Mina who worked on a sugar plantation in Brazil, with Jonas Witsen, owner of a plantation in Suriname, Untung Surapati, who broke free from slavery and became a national hero in Indonesia, and with the illustrious One- Tété Lokhay, who was a source of inspiration for the people who brought the slavery system to a halt in Sint Maarten. Through their stories, history is given relief and we get a better view of the system of slavery, its experience, and how people thought about freedom at the time. In the closing essay, the balance is drawn up: where do we stand in our approach to the colonial slavery past in 2020? The exhibition focuses on the Dutch involvement in the slave trade and slavery. The Dutch colonial period is central, from the 17th to the 19th century, both in the triangle of the Netherlands-Africa-America and in the countries around the Indian Ocean where the VOC was active. Abstract: Tony Wilson is one of the most legendary music industry figures of his generation. Nicknamed Mr Manchester, he transformed the Northern music scene as founder of Factory Records and the Haçienda nightclub after earning a cult following as a television presenter. Working with legendary bands such as Joy Division, New Order, and the Happy Mondays, Wilson was at the very heart of the Manchester music phenomenon and regenerated the culture of an entire city. Celebrated music journalist Paul Morley knew Wilson personally, and is uniquely placed to tell the fascinating and intimate story of his life. He explores Wilson's existence through the eyes of those closest to him, and offers a rare insight into his own personal papers and diaries

Beginning in his own hometown of New Orleans, Smith leads the reader through an unforgettable tour of monuments and landmarks - those that are honest about the past and those that are not - that offer an intergenerational story of how slavery has been central in shaping our nations collective history, and ourselves."

? Abstract: The distinguished private collection, known as the Griffin Collection, comprises in its entirety examples of every category of ring - signet, devotional, memorial, decorative - dating from antiquity to modern times. This catalogue, focusing on about 150 rings in the collection, is concerned with perhaps the most personal rings of all, those associated with love and marriage. Some can be recognised by the figure of Cupid armed with his quiver of golden arrows, others by the symbols of heart and clasped hands. However, the majority are gold bands, sometimes plain and occasionally decorated, that are inscribed with mottoes in English expressing the admiration, affection, and pledges of fidelity which bind humankind together. Known as posies or little poems because they often rhyme, these mottoes were current on rings from the late Middle Ages until the middle of the 19th century. Through these rings, Ms. Scarisbrick engagingly tells the long story of the relations between the sexes from the fifteenth century, when the cult of courtly love was superseded by an idealization of monogamous marriage, to an end in the twentieth century as a result of a different moral outlook

Abstract: This groundbreaking volume examines the extraordinary artistic and cultural traditions of the African region known as the Sahel ("shore" in Arabic), a vast area on the southern edge of the Sahara Desert that includes present-day Senegal, Mauritania, Mali, Niger, Nigeria, and Chad. This is the first book to present a comprehensive overview of the diverse cultural achievements and traditions of the region, spanning more than 1,300 years from the pre-Islamic period through the 19th century. It features some of the earliest extant art from Africa as well as such iconic works as sculptures by the Dogon and Bamana peoples of Mali. Essays by leading international scholars discuss the art, architecture, archaeology, literature, philosophy, religion, and history of the Sahel, exploring the unique cultural landscape in which these ancient communities flourished. Richly illustrated and brilliantly argued, Sahel brings to life the enduring creativity of the different peoples who lived, traded, and traveled through this crossroads of the world.

Abstract: The Apsáalooke people, often referred to as the Crow, are known for their bravery and artistry, and their rich culture has developed over centuries in the Northern Plains. The Apsáalooke Women and Warriors project is a multi-format undertaking that presents a rich narrative of the Apsáalooke cultural past, figures the present-day Apsáalooke identity, and presents a vision for the future. Through writing, images, and sound, contemporary Apsáalooke artists and intellectuals convey the worldview of the Apsáalooke people, with each contributor offering a unique perspective. This book accompanies a multi-site exhibition at the Field Museum and the Neubauer Collegium. It combines images of contemporary and historic Apsáalooke cultural items and includes essays by Apsáalooke writers. While it works in concert with the exhibition, it also stands alone as a significant exploration of the iconography, lifeways, and cosmologies of the Apsáalooke people. All proceeds from this book will benefit Little Big Horn College in Crow Agency, Montana

Abstract: "Explore the changing world of late nineteenth-century Iran through the gaze of one of its most renowned photographers, Antoin Sevruguin. This volume, which will be accompanied by a forthcoming exhibition, publishes for the first time the Oriental Institute Museum's complete collection of nineteenth-century Iranian photographs, most of which were created by Sevruguin. Sevruguin's artfully staged photographs still resonate with us today. Accompanying the print catalog is a series of essays that investigate Sevruguin's life and photographic career, including the lasting impact of his unique vision, as demonstrated by the work of contemporary artist Yassaman Ameri" -- Publisher's description
Note: Literaturverzeichnis Seite 347-367 , "A hitherto little-known treasure of the Oriental Institute Museum is its collection of 152 Qajar-era photographs, which date to the nineteenth century and were captured primarily by the acclaimed Iranian-Armenian photographer Antoin Sevruguin. Recently revealed by a growing body of scholarship to be a major figure in early photography, Sevruguin documented changing life in Iran through a wide range of subjects as the country stood on the cusp of modernity at the turn of the twentieth century. As emphasized by special exhibit curator Tasha Vorderstrasse, Sevruguin stood in contrast to his Western contemporaries who, immersed in the Orientalist tradition, focused specifically on the antiquity of the country, romanticizing the ruins of a glorious past. Rather, Sevruguin's photography promotes the newly arrived conveniences of the modern age while simultaneously capturing traditional ways of Iranian life - often drawing a stark contrast between the two in their juxtaposition. Understanding the new technology to be more than a mere medium of documentation for posterity, Sevruguin was an early proponent of photography as art, frequently backstamping his work with the label "photographie artistique". Sevruguin's distinctive approach to composition, choice of subject matter, and use of light and shadows are hallmarks of his photographic vision. Expertly curated by Vorderstrasse - and timely for the recent scholarly and artistic appreciation of Sevruguin's work - Antoin Sevruguin : Past and Present exhibits for the first time the Oriental Institute's unstudied and largely forgotten collection of Qajar-era photographs that were acquired at the beginning of the twentieth century. As one might expect of an OI exhibition, Antoin Sevruguin : Past and Present and its accompanying catalog rigorously explore Sevruguin's work in the fullest of its historical, cultural, and ethnographic contexts."--taken from Foreword, page vii

Abstract: Preface / Kathryn Brown -- Introduction -- Prologue: Western Africa, Africans and Liverpool's Municipal Museum -- Arnold Ridyard and his assemblage -- Diasporic dialogues: the Sierra Leonean donors I -- Trans-imperial identities: the Sierra Leonean donors II -- Coastal 'kings': the Gold Coast donors I -- Coastal cosmopolitans: the Gold Coast donors II -- Museum meanings: regimes of classification, representation and display -- Epilogue.
Abstract: "The early collections from Africa in Liverpool's World Museum reflect the city's longstanding shipping and commercial links with Africa's Atlantic coast. A principal component of these collections is an assemblage of several thousand artefacts from western Africa that were transported to institutions in northwest England between 1894 and 1916 by the Liverpool steam ship engineer Arnold Ridyard. While Ridyard's collecting efforts can be seen to have been shaped by the steamers' dynamic capacity to connect widely separated people and places, his Methodist credentials were fundamental in determining the profile of his African networks, because they meant that he was not part of official colonial authority in West Africa. Kingdon's study uncovers the identities of many of Ridyard's numerous West African collaborators and discusses their interests and predicaments under the colonial dispensation. Against this background account, their agendas are examined with reference to surviving narratives that accompanied their donations and within the context of broader processes of trans-imperial exchange, through which they forged new identities and statuses for themselves and attempted to counter expressions of British cultural imperialism in the region. The study concludes with a discussion of the competing meanings assigned to the Ridyard assemblage by the Liverpool Museum and examines the ways in which its re-contextualization in museum contexts helped to efface signs of the energies and narratives behind its creation."--Publisher's website

Abstract: Starting in the bohemian subculture of post-World War I American cities, Measom covers the influence of World War II, which relocated millions of people to single-sex barracks and factories and helped spark the formation of gay communities after the war. The repressive ’50s era saw the launch of important rights organizations that led to the rebellions of the 1960s, culminating in the game-changing Stonewall Uprising of June 1969. Measom explores the devastation of the AIDS crisis, its impact on gay culture, and the fight to bring awareness to the disease. The modern period includes coverage of the struggles for equality in marriage, the military, and the push for gender rights. A groundbreaking homage to a historic movement and its milestone achievements and hurdles. -- adapted from jacket

Abstract: Death has been a source of grief and uncertainty for humanity throughout history, but it has also been the inspiration for a plethora of fascinating traditions. The covering of mirrors to prevent the departed spirit from seeing itself; the passing bell rung to assist the soul to heaven; the "sin eater" who sat beside a coffin eating and drinking to "absorb" the corpse's sins - all of these were common approaches at one time or another. Yet in the modern day, death has become more clinical than spiritual, something kept hidden behind closed doors. This beautifully illustrated history explores English approaches to death and burial from the medieval era to the present day, exploring ancient customs which have long since lapsed, those such as lighting candles that have survived until the present day, and new approaches such as eco-burials, which are changing how we relate to death, dying and the dead

Abstract: Drawing obsessively and free from care, Manuel João Ramos' rapidly caught impressions convey the rough edges of the intensely lived experiences that are fundamental to the desire to travel. For the travel sketch is more than a record or register of attendance ("been there, seen that"): it holds invisibly within itself the remnant of a look, the hint of a memory and a trace of an osmosis of feelings between the sketcher and the person or objects sketched. Less intrusive than using a camera, Ramos argues drawing comprises a less imperialist, more benign way of researching: his sketchbook becomes a means of communication between himself and the world in which he travels, rendering him more human to those around him. As he journeys through the Ethiopian Central Highlands, collecting historical legends of the power struggles surrounding the arrival of the first Europeans in the mid-sixteenth century, he is drawn to the Portuguese legacy of castles, palaces and churches, near ruins now, though echoes of their lost splendour are retained in oral accounts. Excerpts from his diary, as well as journalistic pieces, share the conviviality of his encounters with the priests, elders and historians who act as custodians of the oral tradition. Their tales are interwoven with improvised, yet assured, drawings, and this informality of structure successfully retains the immediacy and pleasure of his discovery of Ethiopia. It also suggests the potential for drawing to play a more active part in anthropological production, as a means of creating new narratives and expositional forms in ethnography, bringing it closer to travel writing or the graphic novel

Abstract: "The Tropenmuseum Amsterdam houses about 12,000 textile objects that were collected over a period of 160 years. The majority of the objects were amassed during the time that Indonesia was a Dutch colony, the former Netherlands-Indies. This study presents the collection and the stories of the makers and users of the fabrics as well as those of the collectors who brought them to the Netherlands, who have studied and exhibited them. The textiles originate from all over de archipelago, from Aceh on Sumatra, to Tinambar in the east. A small part of the collection was made in the Netherlands for artistic or commercial reasons."

Abstract: "Since the early 20th century, city sidewalks have become runways where idiosyncratic modes of dressing are presented, consumed, and exported. Their messages include resistance, solidarity, subversion, social transformation, or musical affiliation, and a group of like-minded individuals can create a powerful sartorial force. Organized by continent and with 600 color images, The World Atlas of Street Fashion examines street style in all its global diversity. The book shows how Punk's generic language of anarchy is redeployed in London, Berlin, Tokyo, or Jakarta and takes on the unique flavor of each. It also reveals how street style can be overtly political: the Sapeurs of Kinshasa use elegance to reframe themselves as gentlemen, and the cholo gangs of East Los Angeles took strength from the Chicano movement of the 1960s. Street style can also be obsessive, as seen here through the K-Pop enthusiasts of Seoul, who inhabit the lives of their music idols by re-creating publicity stills through elaborate cosplay. The author discusses how such scenes can develop cachet by being underground, fostering a look's distinctiveness and integrity. Through its extensive research, striking photography, and handsome design, World Atlas of Street Fashion is the essential resource on world street style"--Publisher's description

Abstract: "What's the most important garment in a woman's closet? More often than not, the answer is 'the little black dress.' For decades, fashion magazines have touted the LBD as the perfect solution to almost every fashion crisis. Dressed up or down, with flats or heels, statement jewelry or a subdued jacket, the little black dress can be worn anywhere, for any occasion. Where did the little black dress come from? And how did black become the color of choice for every occasion? In Little Black Dress, Shannon Meyer answers these questions by offering a visual history of the black dress, illustrating its transformation from a traditional mourning garment to the fashion staple it is today. Beginning with the Victorian era, Meyer describes how widows were required to wear plain black clothing with no decoration for one year and a day, as a symbol of full mourning. This gave way to concepts such as 'ordinary' and 'half' mourning that allowed for different fabrics and embellishments. Then, in the early twentieth century, women began to slowly adopt black into their everyday wardrobe, and, in the 1920s, Coco Chanel launched her revolutionary first line of black dresses, advertising them as versatile, affordable, and fashionable choices for women. As Meyer shows, other designers quickly followed suit, and black has since prevailed as a universal, ever appropriate, always fashionable choice. Richly illustrated with seventy full-color photos of dresses and accessories spanning 150 years, and including information about the designer, original owner, and historical context for each, readers will find Little Black Dress a stylish guide to this wardrobe essential. Designed to accompany an exhibit by the same name at the Missouri History Museum, the book will impress historians and fashionistas alike"--

Abstract: In der zweiten Hälfte des 19. 0Exhibition: Deutsches Historisches Museum, Berlin, Germany (14.10.16 - 14.05.2017)

Abstract: "When Latino migration to the U.S. South became increasingly visible in the 1990s, observers and advocates grasped for ways to analyze "new" racial dramas in the absence of historical reference points. However, as this book is the first to comprehensively document, Mexicans and Mexican Americans have a long history of migration to the U.S. South. Corazón de Dixie recounts the untold histories of Mexicanos' migrations to New Orleans, Mississippi, Arkansas, Georgia, and North Carolina as far back as 1910. It follows Mexicanos into the heart of Dixie, where they navigated the Jim Crow system, cultivated community in the cotton fields, purposefully appealed for help to the Mexican government, shaped the southern conservative imagination in the wake of the civil rights movement, and embraced their own version of suburban living at the turn of the twenty-first century"...

Abstract: "The book presents photographs taken in what is now northern Tanzania by Lutheran missionaries from Leipzig in the first four decades of the twentieth century. It touches briefly on upon certain fields of everyday life (gender, medicine, schools, architecture, "other" customs) and up ways in which photographs were used for publicity. Longer chapters deal with the portrayal of missionary children, of music and dance, as well as of the landscape."--Page 4 of cover

Abstract: Für das späte 19. und beginnende 20.
