    Abstract: "This book shines light on Indigenous perspectives through a novel interpretation of the works of the two most important Amerindian intellectuals in the Andes, Felipe Guaman Poma de Ayala and Garcilaso de la Vega, el Inca. Building on but also departing from the predominant scholarly position that views Indigenous-Spanish relations as the clash of two distinct cultures, Gonzalo Lamana argues that Guaman Poma and Garcilaso were the first Indigenous activist intellectuals and that they developed post-racial imaginaries four hundred years ago. Their texts not only highlighted Native peoples' achievements, denounced injustice, and demanded colonial reform, but they also exposed the emerging Spanish thinking and feeling on race that was at the core of colonial forms of discrimination. These authors aimed to alter the way colonial actors saw each other and, as a result, to change the world in which they lived+--

    Abstract: This study re-examines and contextualises Eduard Seler's investigations in the Chaculá-Region (Department of Huehuetenango, Guatemala). Starting with a discussion of ethnohistory as well as the historical circumstances of Seler's research, his methods are critically examined in the context of archaeology in late 19th century Guatemala and the practice of collecting by European museums, specifically the Ethnological Museum Berlin. This is followed by the results of a reconnaissance of the different archaeological sites documented by Seler in the region, in which their current state of preservation is examined and Seler's excavation trenches are re-discovered. The core of the work is a new study of the materials from the region in the collection of the Ethnological Museum Berlin, including previously undocumented ceramic materials. Through typological cross-dating, a first ceramic chronology for the region is established, showing that the major settlements were occupied from the Late Classic (600-900) to the Early Postclassic (900-1250). These data and observations form the foundation for a re-examination of the interpretations put forth by Eduard Seler and later scholars, concerning topics such as architecture, burials and caches, the function of the Quen Santo caves, ritual and settlement continuity from the Late Classic to modern times and the ethnolinguistic identity of the ancient inhabitants of the region. The book concludes with a look at the postcolonial challenges that the collection in Berlin faces and ways to connect the archaeological past with the indigenous present in the Chaculá-Region

    Abstract: El libro presenta once trabajos sobre un debate historiográfico, el estudio de cómo se construyeron y asimilaron las diferencias humanas y culturales. Aunque concede una atención especial a América hasta el siglo XIX, integra otros espacios relacionados con la España colonial como Filipinas o Marruecos. La percepción del otro, comenzando por quién designa y es designado como otro, no es un tema nuevo en la historiografía, pero sigue vigente por su capacidad de integrar las visiones de dominadores y dominados, por su metodología interdisciplinar (representada en el libro por la colaboración de historiadores, historiadores del arte o antropólogos) y por la naturaleza universal de algunas de sus conclusiones, las cuales permiten relacionarlo con el presente. En resumen, una propuesta amplia e integradora que interroga al pasado sobre un tema definitorio del ser humano y que, por eso, nunca deja de ser actual. Quizás, si comprendemos los fenómenos de identidad y alteridad como construcciones culturales, podamos favorecer la formación de sociedades más respetuosas y pacíficas

    Abstract: "Este libro propone avanzar en el estudio de una temática escasamente analizada, con el fin de conocer la historia agraria pampeana mediante la exploración de instituciones educativas y cientificas, de las tareas orientadas a generar y difundir conocimientos y tecnología aplicables al agro y de la definición de políticas para dicho sector en La Pampa. Para ello, es vital atender al papel que asumieron los técnicos que llevaban a cabo aus labores con los pies en el surco. Su vínculo con entidades agrarias, con los productores agropecuarios, con el ámbito académico y con el Estado provincial constituye un excelente mirador para identificar, por un lado, la significación que le conferían los actores rurales a dichos técnicos y a las instituciones mencionadas y, por otro lado, la incidencia de los saberes originados en estas últimas en las agendas estatales. Esta perspectiva de análisis, que no escinde el plano institucional de aquel que contempla a los actores, resulta útil para explicar no solo las capacidades y limitaciones estatales en ese sentido, sino además las percepciones de los habitantes del campo en lo refiere a tecnología e innovación."--Page 4 of cover

    Abstract: "Ecclesiastical institutions and actors were essential for the formation of normative orders in early modern Ibero-America. However, both legal historiography, due to its strong legalistic, state-centred imprint, and general historiography on colonial times, more inclined towards secular law, have only rarely discussed the contribution of ecclesiastical normativity to the formation of that normative texture which, in the historiographical tradition, has been called 'derecho indiano'. In light of this situation, the Max Planck Institute for European Legal History has organised a series of seminars in different Latin American cities in order to offer an interdisciplinary forum dedicated to the research of 'ecclesiastical normativities and institutions in Ibero-America' between the 16th and 19th centuries. The present volume is the first in a series of publications that document the results of this cycle of seminars celebrated in Mexico City, Lima, Bogotá and São Paulo. The book, focusing on New Spain, is divided into five thematic parts. The first section presents investigations on canon law and moral theology that deal with characteristic aspects of multinormativity and the teaching of those disciplines in early modern times. The second section examines diocesan governance and ecclesiastical power in Mexico City and Puebla via statutes of the cathedral chapter, members of the 'curia arzobispal' and pertinent legal opinions. In the third section, the contributors reflect on the normativity and administration of sacraments, drawing on conciliar norms, treatises, pragmatic literature but as well on registers of baptisms and confessions. The fourth section deals with ethnic groups in courts of justice, both civil and ecclesiastic ones: indigenous people accused of 'hechicería' in a tribunal of Tlaxcala and Afro-Mexicans who started litigation in the archiepiscopal court of Mexico. The articles of the fifth section cover the topics of beatification, devotion and cultural expressions (music, images) from a normative perspective and extend the period of investigation to the 19th century. The articles on ecclesiastical institutions and normativities in New Spain collected in this volume propose new research fields for legal history and the history of the Church, which at the same time are relevant for social and cultural history.     Abstract: Los estudios de género están vigentes en la actualidad, y más si se atiende a la Edad Media. En el libro se aborda al ámbito femenino desde una orientación transversal que se aproxima desde la historia y la literatura a diferentes voces que se escuchan a través de los discursos legados en textos pertenecientes a tipologías muy distintas. Los enfoques complementarios pretenden dar cuenta de las múltiples caras de la realidad femenina en un período dinámico en el que nuevos horizontes estaban emergiendo para el individuo con códigos lingüísticos inéditos (lenguas vernáculas), con géneros desconocidos hasta el momento y con una situación política en transformación. El volumen compila una serie de estudios de especialistas alrededor de voces de mujeres medievales, articulados alrededor de tres apartados, que se complementan e interrelacionan: la feminidad histórica refleja la actividad cultural y literaria que ejercieron ciertas damas y reinas, la feminidad autorial se centra en aspectos novedosos de figuras que iniciaron el mundo de las letras femeninas y, por último, la feminidad textual se fija en el protagonismo femenino de ficciones literarias. Se muestra una diversidad compleja de discursos femeninos, pertenecientes a una época en la que las mujeres dejaban oír su voz.
    Abstract: The contributions gathered in this volume take a fresh look at the medieval history of women, revealing the many faces of female reality during an extremely dynamic period-while individuality was on the rise, new linguistic codes (vernacular languages) and innovative literary genres were emerging, and the political situation was undergoing deep changes. The book is structured in three interrelated sections: The first is dedicated to "Historical femininity" and documents the cultural and literary activities carried out by women from the nobility. The second is about "Authorial femininity" and explores the innovative work of both prominent and lesser-known female writers. The last section deals with "Textual femininity" and analyses the female protagonists of lyric poetry and narrative literature. As a whole, the book shows how complex and diverse medieval discourses on and from women were.

    Abstract: "El intelectual y la cultura de masas, by Javier García Liendo, studies the responses of Ángel Rama (Uruguay) and Jose María Arguedas (Peru) to the effects of mass culture on Andean indigenous cultures and Latin American print culture during the second half of the twentieth century. It explores the part that Rama and Arguedas played in the conceptualization and promotion of new cultural spaces made possible by commodification and industrialization, as capitalism transformed the imaginaries and materialities that had shaped their cultural projects for Andean and Latin American cultures. Through a material analysis of print culture objects, in particular those resulting from Rama's editorial ventures--such as pocket paperbacks and a popular encyclopedia--this work examines the transformations occurring at the time in Latin America at the level of production and circulation of culture, and thus sheds light on the emergence of new networks of communication between intellectuals and national and regional publics. Similarly, it explores the role of emergent communication technologies (sound recording and radio) in the reshaping of rural indigenous cultures into a mass-oriented popular culture in Peru. In this context, Arguedas's work with folklore and his later involvement in the Andean popular music scene in Lima are studied as responses to a violent process of commercialization of traditional Andean musical culture, a result of mass migration from rural areas to cities and urbanization"--Provided by publisher

Siguiendo una secuencia cronológica, el autor presenta un detallado recorrido vital de dos generaciones sucesivas de dicho clan familiar a lo largo de todo el siglo XIX.     Abstract: "The decrees of the Third Mexican Provincial Council, celebrated in 1585, had an important impact on the organization of the colonial Church and Spanish-American society, from the time they were published in 1622 until the nineteenth century. This research focuses on how the decrees were drafted, taking into consideration the working materials used in the conciliar meeting room by the bishops and their assistants, and thus highlighting the intentions of the conciliar fathers in their new and original elaboration of both Canon Law and Derecho Indiano"--
