Abstract: How can feminism fight patriarchy while preserving some women's desire for patriarchal sex and other women's desire to liberate themselves from it? In a Rapture of Distress argues for a more capacious definition of sex-positive, via a curious rather than a moral spectatorship upon the sex life of women of different cultures and generations.

Abstract: More children than ever are crossing international borders alone to seek asylum worldwide. In the past decade, over a half million children have fled from Central America to the United States, seeking safety and a chance to continue lives halted by violence. Yet upon their arrival, they fail to find the protection that our laws promise, based on the broadly shared belief that children should be safeguarded. A meticulously researched ethnography, Precarious Protections chronicles the experiences and perspectives of Central American unaccompanied minors and their immigration attorneys as they pursue applications for refugee status in the US asylum process. Chiara Galli debunks assumptions about asylum, including the idea that people are being denied protection because they file bogus claims. In practice, the United States interprets asylum law far more narrowly than what is necessary to recognize real-world experiences of escape from life-threatening violence. This is especially true for children from Central America. Galli reveals the formidable challenges of lawyering with children and exposes the human toll of the US immigration bureaucracy.

Abstract: This book complements and deepens Uriel G. Foa's and Edna B. Foa's 1974 presentations of resource theory of social exchange by expanding on the original roots and subsequent refinements and developments of Social Resource Theory (SRT). With its contemporary overview of the theoretical extensions of social resource theory and related empirical research, Social Behavior as Resource Exchange offers far-reaching societal implications for most behavioral and social science disciplines.

Abstract: In the current era, the ongoing challenge of race and ethnic relations and growing white supremacy reminds us that the centrality of racism needs considerable attention and has us profoundly questioning the structure and functioning of institutional practices. In Social Work and the Grand Challenge of Ending Racism, the authors argue that racism has been somewhat short shifted as an avenue of inquiry to help explain social problems and social welfare outcomes within the social work profession, and within the greater society. This book promotes innovative ways of preventing or interrupting racism and to stress the development and proliferation of antiracism practices as a method of reducing racialized outcomes in society.

Abstract: In The Oxford Handbook of Expertise and Democratic Politics, Gil Eyal and Thomas Medvetz have brought together a broad group of scholars who have engaged substantively and theoretically with debates regarding the nature of expertise and the social roles of experts to examines these areas within sociology and allied disciplines. The analyses take an historical and relational approach to the topic and are motivated by the sense that growing mistrust in experts represents a danger to democratic politics today. Bringing together investigations from social scientists, philosophers, and legal scholars into the political dimensions of expertise, this Handbook connects interdisciplinary work done in science and technology studies with the more classic concerns, topics, and concepts of sociologists of professions and intellectuals.

Abstract: In The Oxford Handbook of Latin American Social Movements, Federico M. Rossi presents a survey of the broad range of theoretical perspectives on social movements in Latin America. Bringing together a wide variety of viewpoints, the Handbook includes five sections: theoretical approaches to social movements, as applied to Latin America; processes and dynamics of social movements; major social movements in the region; ideational and strategic dimensions of social movements; and the relationship between political institutions and social movements. Covering key social movements and social dynamics in Latin America from the late nineteenth century to the twenty-first century, The Oxford Handbook of Latin American Social Movements is an indispensable reference for any scholar interested in social movements, protest, contentious politics, and Latin American studies.

Abstract: Exploring models of hope that are expressed through critique, persistence, vision, and holy inspiration in the Hebrew Bible and that find continued resonance in the traditions of Jesus, Brueggemann locates in the Scriptures a tenacious shalom that breaks through the rocky ground of struggle and suffering. This gritty, wide-awake hope is willing to be dissatisfied and to cry out against the oppressor, while reaching forward to imagine new alternatives with creativity and freedom, to bring into reality a social order that benefits and cares for all. Questions for reflection are included at the end of each chapter.
