Abstract: Zum 250. Abstract: Americans have always had a complicated relationship with aging-- and women have been on the front lines of the battle, willingly or not. Collins illustrates the ways in which age is an arbitrary concept that has swung back and forth over the centuries. From Plymouth Rock to the first female nominee for president, she provides a social history of American women and aging-- and gives women a reason to expect the best from what's to come. -- adapted from jacket

Abstract: "American policy-makers have long been locked in a heated battle over whether, how many, and what kind of immigrants to allow to live and work in the country. Those in favor of welcoming more immigrants often cite humanitarian reasons, while those in favor of more restrictive laws argue the need to protect native citizens. But economist Bryan Caplan adds a new, compelling perspective to the immigration debate: He argues that opening all borders could eliminate absolute poverty worldwide and usher in a booming worldwide economy--greatly benefiting humanity. With a clear and conversational tone, exhaustive research, and vibrant illustrations by Zach Weinersmith, Open Borders makes the case for unrestricted immigration easy to follow and hard to deny"--Provided by publisher

Abstract: "A bold and gripping graphic history of the fight for women's rights The ongoing struggle for women's rights has spanned human history, touched nearly every culture on Earth, and encompassed a wide range of issues, such as the right to vote, work, get an education, own property, exercise bodily autonomy, and beyond. Amazons, Abolitionists, and Activists is a fun and fascinating graphic novel-style primer that covers the key figures and events that have advanced women's rights from antiquity to the modern era. In addition, this compelling book illuminates the stories of notable women throughout history--from queens and freedom fighters to warriors and spies--and the progressive movements led by women that have shaped history, including abolition, suffrage, labor, civil rights, LGBTQ liberation, reproductive rights, and more. Examining where we've been, where we are, and where we're going, Amazons, Abolitionists, and Activists is an indispensable resource for people of all genders interested in the fight for a more liberated future"--

Abstract: Picking up where Under the Big Black Sun left off, More Fun in the New World explores the years 1982 to 1987, covering the dizzying pinnacle of L.A.'s punk rock movement as its stars took to the national -- and often international -- stage. Detailing the eventual splintering of punk into various sub-genres, the second volume of John Doe and Tom DeSavia's west coast punk history portrays the rich cultural diversity of the movement and its characters, the legacy of the scene, how it affected other art forms, and ultimately influenced mainstream pop culture. The book also pays tribute to many of the fallen soldiers of punk rock, the pioneers who left the world much too early but whose influence hasn't faded

Abstract: Shane is back! The beloved heroine of students and faculty alike returns in this third volume of the acclaimed series, focusing on the basic how-to's and foundations of ethnographic studies of children and childhoods. The book opens with Shane trying to land a post-doc working in a department of cultural anthropologists studying children and childhood. Rather predictably, Shane initially sees children as nothing more than small adults. But in this book she'll be forced to reorient herself, yet again. As usual, she is aided by the spirits of the ancestors, of senior colleagues, of talking guinea pigs and gigantic head lice, and through it all by her esteemed guide, Billy the Literal Kid. This illustrated guide will orient the reader to the fundamental challenges in doing ethnographic research with children. The book begins by briefly exploring the history of research on children, with children, for children and "by" children. Throughout, it is about doing research with children rather than on them, highlighting their participant rather than object nature. Topics covered include: Foundations of child development Defining childhood The history, essential theories and major works in the anthropology of childhood Children's culture and popular Kinderculture Ethical concerns and IRBs Foundations of naturalistic inquiry with children Introduction to ethnographic methods with child participants, including detailed guidance in observation and interview methods Practical guidelines for analyzing children's artwork and other visual products Addressing the complexities of adult researcher subjectivities and roles This book is intended for the novice ethnographic researcher and student alike with learning at its core and is designed to encourage wider and deeper reading. It is a useful tool for teaching advanced undergraduate and graduate students in Education, Anthropology, Childhood Studies, Nursing, Communications, Media Studies, Art Education, and more, as well as an essential volume for any faculty bookshelf

Abstract: "In the fall of 2017, the acclaimed writer and musician Vivek Shraya began receiving vivid and disturbing transphobic hate mail from a stranger. Celebrated artist Ness Lee brings these letters and Shraya's responses to them to startling life in "Death Threat", a comic book that, by its existence, becomes a compelling act of resistance. Using satire and surrealism, "Death Threat" is an unflinching portrayal of violent harassment from the perspective of both the perpetrator and the target, illustrating the dangers of online accessibility, and the ease with which vitriolic hatred can be spread digitally."--

Abstract: "A sweeping, smart, and smart-ass graphic history of women's ongoing quest for equality. In March 2017, Nevada surprised the rest of America by suddenly ratifying the Equal Rights Amendment - thirty-five years after the deadline had passed. Hey, better late than never, right? Then, lo and behold, a few months later, Illinois followed suit. Hurrah for the Land of Lincoln! That left the ERA just one state short of the congressional minimum for ratification. One state - and a legacy of shame - are what stand between American women and full equality. She the People takes on the campaign for change by offering a cheekily illustrated, sometimes sarcastic, and all-too-true account of women's evolving rights and citizenship. Divided into twelve historical periods between 1776 and today, journalist, historian, and activist Jen Deaderick takes readers on a walk down the ERA's rocky road to become part of our Constitution by highlighting changes in the legal status of women alongside the significant cultural and social influences of the time, so women's history is revealed as an integral part of U.S. history, and not a tangential sideline"--

Abstract: "Lochlann Jain’s debut non-fiction graphic novel, Things That Art, playfully interrogates the order of things. Toying with the relationship between words and images, Jain’s whimsical compositions may seem straightforward. Upon closer inspection, however, the drawings reveal profound and startling paradoxes at the heart of how we make sense of the world. Commentaries by architect and theorist Maria McVarish, poet and naturalist Elizabeth Bradfield, musician and English Professor Drew Daniel, and the author offer further insight into the drawings in this collection. A captivating look at the fundamental absurdities of everyday communication, Things that Art jolts us toward new forms of collation and collaboration."--

Abstract: Starting in the bohemian subculture of post-World War I American cities, Measom covers the influence of World War II, which relocated millions of people to single-sex barracks and factories and helped spark the formation of gay communities after the war. The repressive ’50s era saw the launch of important rights organizations that led to the rebellions of the 1960s, culminating in the game-changing Stonewall Uprising of June 1969. Measom explores the devastation of the AIDS crisis, its impact on gay culture, and the fight to bring awareness to the disease. The modern period includes coverage of the struggles for equality in marriage, the military, and the push for gender rights. A groundbreaking homage to a historic movement and its milestone achievements and hurdles. -- adapted from jacket

Abstract: What is an "African American" and how does this identity relate to the African continent? Rising immigration levels, globalization, and the United States' first African American president have all sparked new dialogue around the question. This work provides an introduction to the relationship between African Americans and Africa from the era of slavery to the present, mapping several overlapping diasporas. It examines the diversity of African American identities through relationships with region, ethnicity, slavery, and immigration to investigate questions fundamental to the study of African American history and culture but often overlooked.

Abstract: Jean-Michel Basquiat painted 'Defacement' (The Death of Michael Stewart) in 1983 to commemorate the death of a young, black artist who died from injuries sustained while in police custody after being arrested for allegedly tagging a New York City subway station. Published to accompany a focused exhibition of Basquiat's response to anti-black racism and police brutality, this catalogue explores a chapter in the artist's career through both the lens of his identity and the Lower East Side as a nexus of activism in the early 1980s

Abstract: Stuttgart, Pfingsten 1929: Die Polizei errichtet Straßensperren, in der Stadt sind die Vorhängeschlösser ausverkauft. Abstract: Im Auftrag der Landeszentrale für Politische Bildung Hamburg in Kooperation mit dem Museum für Hamburgische Geschichte entstand die Graphic Novel "Rote Fahne, schwarzer Markt" von Robert Brack (Text) und Isabel Kreitz (Zeichnungen).

Abstract: Explores and critiques the many ways the criminal justice system impacts the lives of African American boys and men at every stage of the criminal process, from arrest through sentencing. Essays range from an explication of the historical roots of racism in the criminal justice system to an examination of modern-day police killings of unarmed black men. The contributors discuss and explain racial profiling, the power and discretion of police and prosecutors, the role of implicit bias, the racial impact of police and prosecutorial decisions, the disproportionate imprisonment of black men, the collateral consequences of mass incarceration, and the Supreme Court's failure to provide meaningful remedies for the injustices in the criminal justice system. --From publisher description

Abstract: „What is love?“, fragte sich der deutsche Eurodance-Star Haddaway bereits im Jahre 1993. Abstract: All Fitzgerald's students are among the record-breaking number of people who are seeking asylum in a worldwide crisis on a scale not seen since WWII, fleeing from countries such as Syria and Afghanistan. They draw images of experienced violence and careful optimism: rafts and tanks, flowers and the Eiffel Tower. In her decade in Germany, Fitzgerald experiences the highs of the creatively hopeful, along with the deep depression of the disillusioned, all while waiting to stumble onto her own glory like the great Modernists before her

Abstract: "Following the trail left by an unfinished quilt, this illuminating saga examines slavery from the cotton fields of the South to the textile mills of New England--and the humanity behind it. When we think of slavery, most of us think of the American South. We think of back-breaking fieldwork on plantations. We don't think of slavery in the North, nor do we think of the grueling labor of urban and domestic slaves. Rachel May's rich new book explores the far reach of slavery, from New England to the Caribbean, the role it played in the growth of mercantile America, and the bonds between the agrarian south and the industrial north in the antebellum era--all through the discovery of a remarkable quilt. While studying objects in a textile collection, May opened a veritable treasure-trove: a carefully folded, unfinished quilt made of 1830s-era fabrics, its backing containing fragile, aged papers with the dates 1798, 1808, and 1813, the words 'shuger, ' 'rum, ' 'casks, ' and 'West Indies, ' repeated over and over, along with 'friendship, ' 'kindness, ' 'government, ' and 'incident.' The quilt top sent her on a journey to piece together the story of Minerva, Eliza, Jane, and Juba--the enslaved women behind the quilt--and their owner, Susan Crouch. May brilliantly stitches together the often-silenced legacy of slavery by revealing the lives of these urban enslaved women and their world. Beautifully written and richly imagined, An American Quilt is a luminous historical examination and an appreciation of a craft that provides such a tactile connection to the past."--Jacket

Abstract: Der englische Comiczeichner adaptiert hier gekonnt den modernen Klassiker der amerikanischen Literatur "To kill a Mockingbird" von Harper Lee, der im Jahr 1960 erschien, als Graphic Novel.

Abstract: "The term 'Islamophobia' may be fairly new, but irrational fear and hatred of Islam and Muslims is anything but. Though many speak of Islamophobia's roots in racism, have we considered how anti-Muslim rhetoric is rooted in our legal system? Using his unique lens as a critical race theorist and law professor, Khaled A. Beydoun captures the many ways in which law, policy, and official state rhetoric have fueled the frightening resurgence of Islamophobia in the United States. Beydoun charts its long and terrible history, from the plight of enslaved African Muslims in the antebellum South and the laws prohibiting Muslim immigrants from becoming citizens to the ways the war on terror assigns blame for any terrorist act to Islam and the myriad trials Muslim Americans face in the Trump era. He passionately argues that by failing to frame Islamophobia as a system of bigotry endorsed and emboldened by law and carried out by government actors, U.S. society ignores the injury it inflicts on both Muslims and non-Muslims. Through the stories of Muslim Americans who have experienced Islamophobia across various racial, ethnic, and socioeconomic lines, Beydoun shares how U.S. laws shatter lives, whether directly or inadvertently. And with an eye toward benefiting society as a whole, he recommends ways for Muslim Americans and their allies to build coalitions with other groups. Like no book before it, American Islamophobia offers a robust and genuine portrait of Muslim America then and now"--Provided by publisher

Abstract: This exhibition revisits the 1971 exhibition "Rebuttal to the Whitney Museum Exhibition: Black Artists in Rebuttal", which was organized by members of the Black Emergency Cultural Coalition at Acts of Art, a small, artist-run gallery in Greenwich Village. The original exhibition was mounted in response to the Whitney Museum?s refusal to appoint a Black curator for their survey 'Contemporary Black Artists in America'. The exhibition at Hunter presents ten of the 47 artists from the original Rebuttal show, including Benny Andrews, Betty Blayton-Taylor, Vivian Browne, James Denmark, Cliff Joseph, Richard Mayhew, Dindga McCannon, Ademola Olugebefola, Haywood "Bill" Rivers, and Frank Wimberley. It is a selection intended to represent the stylistic diversity of the original exhibition, with works ranging from sardonic social satire and biting figurative expressionism to Yoruban-inspired symbolism and lyrical abstraction. Through these artists, the exhibition also traces a network of organizations and groups that supported the aspirations of Black artists and the community in the 1960s and early 1970s. Through its survey of the history of the short-lived Acts of Art gallery and the events leading up to the Rebuttalshow, the exhibition and its accompanying catalogue explore the intersections between Black cultural communities and cultural politics in Greenwich Village, the Lower East Side, and Harlem in the late 1960s and early 1970s.00Exhibition: Leubsdorf Gallery, New York, USA (04.10.-25.11.2018)
