ÜberLebenswege is the first book that is exclusively based on extensive interviews and Malanda is to be commended for a narrative that emphasizes the subjective experiences and interpretations of those she interviewed."(Dr. Silke Hackenesch, Akademische Rätin, Universität zu Köln)Schwarze Deutsche, die in den 1950er und 1960er Jahren in Heimen aufwuchsen, sind in der deutschen Erinnerungskultur bislang unsichtbar.

Abstract: Advances in UAE Archaeology details the results of new excavations conducted across the United Arab Emirates over the last few years. These excavations have revealed a wealth of new data on all periods of UAE archaeology from the Palaeolithic to the recent past. Some of these discoveries have filled in important gaps in our knowledge, while others have fundamentally revised what we thought we knew already. For example, the Marawah Island excavations have added a new facet to our understanding of the Neolithic period by revealing intriguing and hitherto unknown funerary rituals. Excavations in Al Ain in the emirate of Abu Dhabi continue to reveal extraordinary evidence of emgt falaj emgirrigation, stretching back 3000 years. The ubiquity of this system across this oasis city further validates its status as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Of particular importance is the discovery of extensive remains from the Late Pre-Islamic period, a significant time in history that has been best revealed in the excavations at Mleiha in the emirate of Sharjah. The research presented here was conducted by specialists from across the world working alongside an ever-growing cadre of Emirati archaeologists who will take the lead in the coming years in revealing more of this country’s extraordinary archaeology and history

Abstract: "As a small community located on the peripheries of Europe and of the Jewish world, Ireland's Jewish community is something of an outlier and is often portrayed as having a unique history or being quaint or quirky in character. This book challenges this narrative by contextualizing Irish Jewry as a community that has been defined by the experience and mythology of Jewish mass migration. This book charts the history of Ireland's Jewish community at a time of rapid growth and cultural, political and social transition, from British rule to Irish independence, exploring the relationship between Jews, Irish society and Irish Jewish communal tradition. Key themes include arrival and settlement; the dynamics between 'native' and immigrant Jews; acculturation and hybridity; intracommunal conflict; gender; and Jewish/non-Jewish relations"--

Abstract: "In premodern Europe, the gender identity of those waiting for Doomsday in their tombs could be reaffirmed, readjusted, or even neutralized. Testimonies of this renegotiation of gender at the encounter with death is detectable in wills, letters envisioning oneself as dead, literary narratives, provisions for burial and memorialization, the laws for the disposal of those executed for heinous crimes and the treatment of human remains as relics"--

Abstract: "Over the past several decades, predominantly White, postindustrial cities in America's agriculture and manufacturing center have flipped from blue to red. Cities that were once part of the traditional Democratic New Deal coalition began to vote Republican, providing crucial support for the electoral victories of Republican presidents from Reagan to Trump. In HOW THE HEARLAND WENT RED, Stephanie Ternullo argues for the importance of place in understanding this rightward shift, showing how voters in these small Midwestern cities view national politics-whether Republican appeals to racial and religious identities or Democrat's appeals to class-through the lens of local conditions. Offering a comparative study of three White blue-collar Midwestern cities in the run-up to the 2020 election, Ternullo shows the ways that local contexts have sped up or slowed down White voters' shift to the right. One of these cities has voted overwhelmingly Republican for decades; one swung to the right in 2016 but remains closely divided between Republicans and Democrats; and one, defying current trends, remains reliably Democratic. Through extensive interviews, Ternullo traces the structural and organizational dimensions of place that frame residents' perceptions of political and economic developments. These place-based conditions-including the ways that local leaders define their cities' challenges-help prioritize residents' social identities, connecting them to one party over another. Despite elite polarization, fragmented media, and the nationalization of American politics, Ternullo argues, the importance of place persists-as one of many factors informing partisanship, but as a particularly important one among cross-pressured voters whose loyalties are contested"--

Abstract: The notion of apocalypse is an age-old concept which has gained renewed interest in popular and scholarly discourse. The book highlights the versatile explications of apocalypse today, demonstrating that apocalyptic transformations – the various encounters with anthropogenic climate change, nuclear violence, polarized politics, colonial assault, and capitalist extractivism – navigate a range of interdisciplinary views on the present moment. Moving from old worlds to new worlds, from world-ending experiences to apocalyptic imaginaries and, finally, from authoritarianism to activism and advocacy, the contributions begin to map the emerging field of Apocalyptic and Post-Apocalyptic Studies. Foregrounding the myriad ways in which collective imaginations of apocalypse underpin ethical, political, and, sometimes, individual experience, the authors provide key points of reference for understanding old and new predicaments that are transforming our many worlds. ; The notion of apocalypse is an age-old concept which has gained renewed interest in popular and scholarly discourse. Abstract: Wie bestritten Handwerkerfamilien ihren wirtschaftlichen Alltag?

Abstract: The Politics of Emotion explores the intersection of powerful emotional states-love, melancholy, grief, and madness-with gender and political power on the Iberian Peninsula from the Middle Ages to the early modern period. Using an array of sources-literary texts, medical treatises, and archival documents-Nuria Silleras-Fernandez focuses on three royal women: Isabel of Portugal (1428-1496), queen-consort of Castile; Isabel of Aragon (1470-1498), queen-consort of Portugal; and Juana of Castile (1479-1555), queen of Castile and its empire. Each of these women was perceived by their contemporaries as having gone "mad" as a result of excessive grief, and all three were related to Isabel the Catholic (1451-1504), queen of Castile and a woman lauded in her time as a paragon of reason.Through the lives and experiences of these royal women and the observations, judgments, and machinations of their families, entourages, and circles of writers, chronicles, courtiers, moralists, and physicians in their orbits, Silleras-Fernandez addresses critical questions about how royal women in Iberia were expected to behave, the affective standards to which they were held, and how perceptions about their emotional states influenced the way they were able to exercise power. More broadly, The Politics of Emotion details how the court cultures in medieval and early modern Castile and Portugal contributed to the development of new notions of emotional excess and mental illness.

Abstract: Charting the increase in the use of games for the dissemination of extremist propaganda, radicalization, recruitment, and mobilization, this book examines the "gamification of extremism." Editors Linda Schlegel and Rachel Kowert bring together a range of insights from world-leading experts in the field to provide the first comprehensive overview of gaming and extremism. The potential nexus between gaming and extremism has become a key area of concern for researchers, policymakers, and practitioners seeking to prevent and counter radicalization and this book offers insights into key trends and debates, future directions, and potential prevention efforts. This includes the exploration of how games and game adjacent spaces, such as Discord, Twitch, Steam, and DLive, are being leveraged by extremists for the purposes of radicalization, recruitment, and mobilization. Additionally, the book presents the latest counterterrorism techniques, surveys promising preventing/countering violent extremism (P/CVE) measures currently being utilized in the gaming sphere, and examines the ongoing challenges, controversies, and current gaps in knowledge in the field. This text will be of interest to students and scholars of gaming and gaming culture, as well as an essential resource for researchers and practitioners working in prevention and counter-extremism, professionals working at gaming-related tech companies, and policymakers

Abstract: Through a rigorous analysis of original scriptures and later commentaries, this open access book unearths a cornucopia of idiosyncratic motifs pervading the famous Tibetan sky-gazing meditation known as “Skullward Leap” (thod rgal). Flavio Geisshuesler argues that these motifs suggest that the practice did not originate in the context of Buddhism, but rather within indigenous Tibetan culture and in close contact with the early Bön tradition. The book argues that Dzogchen once belonged to a cult centered on the quest for vitality, which involved the worship of the sky as primordial source of life and endorsed the hunting of animals, as they were believed to be endowed with the ability to move in between the divine realm of the heavens and the world of humans. The book also traces the historical development of the Great Perfection, delineating a complex process of buddhicization that started with the introduction of Buddhism in the 7th century, intensified with the rise of new schools in the 11th century, and reached its climax in the systematization of the teachings by the great scholar-yogi Longchenpa in the 14th century. The study advances an innovative model of meditation as an open-ended practice that animates practitioners to face the most challenging moments of their lives with courage and curiosity, imagination and creativity, and playfulness and excitement; qualities that are oftentimes overlooked in contemporary descriptions of contemplation. Abstract: This open access book explores knowledge practices by five women from different European contexts. Contributors document, analyze, and discuss how women employed practices of privacy to pursue knowledge that did not necessarily conform with the curriculum prescribed for them. The practices of Jane Lumley in England, Camila Herculiana in Padua, Victorine de Chastenay in Paris, as well as Elisabeth Sophie Marie and Philippine Charlotte in Brunswick-Wolfenbüttel, will help us to exemplify the delicate balance between audacity and obedience that women had to employ to be able to explore science, literature, philosophy, theology, and other types of learned activities. Cases range from the sixteenth to the nineteenth century, presenting continuities and discontinuities across temporal and geographical lines of the strategies that women used to protect their knowledge production and retain intact their reputations as good Christian daughters, wives, and mothers. Taken together, the essays show how having access to privacy—the ability to regulate access to themselves while studying and learning—was a crucial condition for the success of the knowledge activities these women pursued. This is an open access book

Abstract: The burgeoning scholarship on Western health films stands in stark contrast to the vacuum in the historical conceptualization of Eastern European films. This book develops a nonlinear historical model that revises their unique role in the inception of national cinematography and establishing supranational health security. Readers witness the revelation of an unknown history concerning how the health films produced in Eastern European countries not only adopted Western patterns of propaganda but actively participated in its formation, especially with regard to those considered “others”: Women and the populations of the periphery. The authors elaborate on the long “echo” of the discursive practices introduced by health films within public health propaganda, as well as the attempts to negate and deconstruct such practices by rebellious filmmakers. A wide range of methods, including the analysis of the sociological biographies of filmmakers, the historical reconstruction of public campaigns against diseases and an investigation into the production of health films, contextualizes these films along a multifaceted continuum stretching between the adaptation of global patterns and the cultivation of national authenticities. The book is aimed at those who study the history of film, the history of public health, Central and Eastern European countries and global history

Abstract: Cultural Cold War, decolonization, postcolonial studies, cultural diplomacy, national theatre
Abstract: "This volume explores how the Cultural Cold War played out in Africa and Asia in the context of decolonization. Both the USA and the Soviet Union as well as East European states undertook significant efforts to influence cultural life in the newly independent, postcolonial world. The different forms of influence are the subject of this book. The contributions are grouped around four topic headings. "Networks and Institutions" looks at the various ways Western-style theatre became institutionalized in the decolonial world, especially Africa. "Cultural Diplomacy" focuses on the activities of the Soviet Union in India in the late 1950s and 1960s in the very different arenas of book publishing and the circus. "Artists and Agency" explores how West African filmmakers (Ousmane Sembene and Abderrahmane Sissako) and European authors (Brecht and Ibsen) were harnessed for different kinds of Cold War strategies. Finally, the section "Cultures of Things" investigates how everyday objects such as books and iconic theatre buildings became suffused with affect, nostalgia and ideology. This book will be of interest for students of the Cold War, postcolonial studies, theatre, film and literature"--

Abstract: In this volume, Mark Luccarelli pushes past unproductive mind/body debates by rooting the rise of environmental awareness in the political and geographical history of the US. Considering history in terms of the categorical development of space - social, territorial and conceptual - the book examines the forces that drove people to ignore their surroundings by distancing culture from place and by assiduously advancing the dissolution of social bonds. Thus beneath the question of the surround, and the key to its renewal today, is the quest to re-engage the common. The latter is still a part of the approach to space, its arrangement and disposition, and has a necessary environmental dimension.Concepts of urbanism, place identity, picturesque landscape and nature are part of a larger Western intellectual and cultural context but, by examining the imaging of cities and landscape, Luccarelli links particular American geographic settings - as well as the political ideals and practices of the republic - to the application and aesthetic reading of these ideas. The advocates of these various perspectives shared an aesthetic orientation as a means of redefining or recovering the common. The book looks at various American urban and regional contexts, as well as the work of artists, writers and public figures, including painter and engraver William Birch, Thomas Jefferson, engraver John Hill, Henry David Thoreau and Frederick Law Olmsted. Luccarelli embeds his environmental study in the works of these men and in the course of American history between the planting of the city of Philadelphia and the establishment of Olmsted's major urban parks

Abstract: This book analyses bordering practices and their negative effects as well as the many creative and often grassroots ways in which borders are resisted and reinvented. From the hostile environment to Brexit and the Nationality and Borders Bill, the UK border regime has become increasingly strict and complex, operating both at the edge of the state and within everyday life in unprecedented ways. At the same time, this securitisation approach is often contested, and its effects are fought daily by many groups and individuals. This book explores this tension, documenting and analysing how the contemporary UK border is imagined, constructed, deconstructed, and reconstructed in multiple ways. To draw together the different pieces that compose this evolving and conflicting landscape, this book uses the concept of "borderscapes", which views borders as sites of multiple tensions between hegemonic, non-hegemonic, and counter-hegemonic imaginaries and practices. This lens enables contributors to draw a multifocal overview of the UK border that includes the different human and material actors that form it, the spaces and practices they shape, and the imaginaries and counter-imaginaries that emerge from their conflictual encounters. Bringing together contributions by researchers from a variety of disciplines, this book will be of interest to scholars and students in the fields of migration and border studies, refugee studies, human geography, criminology, sociology, and anthropology

Abstract: In this archivally informed work, Jennifer S. Clark explores the multiple ways in which the feminist priorities of the 1970s were strengthened by women who labored in the American television industry. Carefully synthesizing an array of interviews and primary sources—from television network memos to programming schedules, production notes to executive meeting agendas—Clark tells the story of how women organized in the workplace to form collectives, affect production labor, and develop reform‑oriented policies and philosophies that reshaped television behind the screen. She urges us to consider how interventions, often at localized levels, can collectively shift the dynamics of media workplaces and the cultural products created therein. “A terrific model of feminist media historiography. Jennifer Clark expands our understanding of 1970s American television, the women’s liberation movement, and the deep connections among gender, labor, and activism while innovating new strategies to examine the media industries.” — Elana Levine, author of Her Stories: Daytime Soap Opera and US Television History “A massively important and enlightening contribution to the field, offering a nuanced treatment of industry cooperation and compromise. Clark uses rare archival findings and a wide range of cultural objects and case studies to generate fresh, bold conclusions around second-wave feminism and American television.” — Annie Berke, author of Their Own Best Creations: Women Writers in Postwar Television

Abstract: "Taking a broad geographical, temporal, and cross-disciplinary approach, this volume explores new and innovative research which focuses on waterways and rivers (including estuaries, lagoons, and canals) from across the Roman Empire. Rivers and Waterways in the Roman World brings together cross-disciplinary chapters focussing on theoretical approaches, new digital and scientific methods and analytical techniques, and related surveying and excavation case studies to examine the Romans extensive use of rivers and inland waterways around the Empire. Roman seafaring is well studied but this book expands our knowledge of Roman transport, communication and trade networks inland. The book highlights the challenges of archaeological work in the dynamic environments of rivers and waterways and showcases the use of new methodologies, including the increasing availability and accessibility of digital technologies that have led to a growth in the development and application of new archaeological and analytical techniques, as well as the discovery of new archaeological sites, many of which were previously inaccessible. This book is for archaeologists, historians, and classicists with an interest in the history and archaeology of the Roman Empire"--

Abstract: Klappentext: The Routledge Companion to History and the Moving Image takes an interdisciplinary approach to understanding history in moving images. It engages this popular and dynamic field that has evolved rapidly from film and television to digital streaming into the age of user-created content. The volume addresses moving image history through a theoretical lens; modes and genres; representation, race, and identity; and evolving forms and formats. It brings together a range of scholars from across the globe who specialize in film and media studies, cultural studies, history, philosophy of history, and education. Together, the chapters provide a necessary contemporary analysis that covers new developments and questions that arise from the shift to digital screen culture. The book examines technological and ethical concerns stemming from today's media landscape, but it also considers the artificial construction of the boundaries between professional expertise and amateur production. Each contributor?s unique approach highlights the necessity of engaging with moving images for the academic discipline of history. The collection, written for a global audience, offers accessible discussions of historiography and a compelling resource for advanced undergraduates and postgraduates in history, film and media studies, and communications.

Abstract: Rosa Schapire - emanzipierte Frau, leidenschaftliche Förderin expressionistischer Kunst, entwurzelt im Londoner Exil, aber Kämpferin bis zum Schluss.

Abstract: The contributions collected in this volume deal with the complex history of the Indian deity Viṣṇu-Nārāyana. This conception of God evolved in various traditions in India, especially in South India, during the first millennium CE. The history of this development is reconstructed here by various means, including philological exegesis, the history of ideas, and iconographic evidence
Abstract: Die in diesem Band versammelten Beiträge behandeln die komplexe Geschichte der indischen Gottheit Viṣṇu-Nārāyana. Abstract: The time span covered by The Routledge History of Fashion and Dress starts in the nineteenth century, with the aftermath of the consumers’ revolution, and reaches all the way to the present. The fashion and garment industries have been international from the beginning and, as such, this volume looks at the history of fashion and dress through the lenses of both international and global history. Because fashion is also a multifaceted subject with humanagency at its core, at the confluence of thematerial (fabrics, clothing, dyes, tools, and machines) and the immaterial (savoir-faire, identities, images, and brands), this volume adopts a transdisciplinary perspective, opening its pages to researchers from a variety of complementary fields. The chapters in this volume are organized based on their relationship to five fields of study: economics and commerce, politics, business, identities, and historical sources. Paying particular attention to change, the book goes beyond the great fashion capitals and well-known fashion centers and points to the broader geographies of fashion. Particular geographical areas focus on the emergence of new fashion systems and business models, whether they be in Sweden, Bangladesh, or Spain, or on the African continent, considered to be the “new frontier” of the industry. Covering myriad aspects of the subject this is the perfect companion for all those interested in history of dress and fashion in the modern world

Abstract: Focusing on the processes of political socialisation and democratisation that took place in Spain during the nineteenth and twentieth centuries, this book brings together specialists who propose the need to rethink the contemporary history of democracy in Spain to build a new narrative. To do so, the authors go down to the local level, where they are able to trace a political culture that forged the foundations of a process of political ""modernization"" much more complex than what conventional historiography has conveyed, even though it was not always transferred institutionally to the national level. The idea of a rural Spain that was backward, apolitical, violent and unprepared for democracy gives way to a more interesting history which, while recognising the peculiarities of the country and the important limitations to democracy, shows examples that could help build a new narrative closer those of other neighbouring countries. Aimed at contemporary historians interested in Spain and Europe, the book also addresses the debates faced by other social scientists on the concept of democracy. This dialogue between history, sociology and political science is particularly present in a special final chapter featuring a discussion of democracy and its application to Spanish history

Abstract: This collection of essays constitutes a timely intervention into contemporary debates on emotions, gender, race and power. Interrogating how emotional expectations are established as gendered, racialised and class-based notions, the volume explores the ways these expectations have been generated, stratified and maintained by institutions, societies, media and those with access to power. The collection draws upon a diverse set of case studies to present a chronologically and geographically broad intervention. The authors identify and explore connections between the depiction of twentieth-century transnational feminists, settler colonies in southern Africa, post-unification Italy, Maoist China, the twentieth-century Soviet Union and the medicalized spaces of the British Raj. Contributions also move across time from notions of eighteenth-century British masculinity, through Victorian Britain and whiteness in settler colonialism, to the Liverpool docks of the 1990s and contemporary Russia. Collectively, the volume’s authors seek to understand how the normalisation of emotions as a range of gendered qualities forms the basis upon which notions of self, and connectedly, social identities are performed. As such, this is an important contribution to the history of emotions that addresses how gender and emotions are formed as co-constituents within dominant power structures, in different geographic and temporal spaces

Abstract: From Hydrology to Hydroarchaeology in the Ancient Mediterranean: An interdisciplinary approach is devoted to the study of water management in ancient cities. It compares the approaches and methods adopted by researchers from different disciplinary sectors to identify the water conditions of past societies and to highlight the measures they have taken to adapt to their water resources. Deriving from an interdisciplinary meeting held in Aix-en-Provence (Mediterranean House of Human Sciences) in 2019, it brings together seven articles that present the innovative results of collaborations between archaeologists and environmental scientists, geologists, geomorphologists, and climatologists in particular. After an introduction that situates the discussions conducted in Aix-en-Provence within the framework of the Watertraces project, funded by the A*Midex foundation (Aix-Marseille University), most of the articles focus on the Sicilian situation. An initial synthesis covers all aspects of the question, followed by four case studies ranging from the 4th century BC to the 1st century AD. Case studies on Agrigento, Termini Imerese/Thermai Himerenses, Alesa/Halaesa, Solunte and Tyndaris are presented. The focus then moves to southern Italy (the Terme di Baia), and to Aegean Greece (the sanctuary at Delphi)

Abstract: This intellectual history of Standard Swahili explores the long-term, intertwined processes of standard making and community creation in the historical, political, and cultural contexts of East Africa and beyond. Morgan J. Robinson argues that the portability of Standard Swahili has contributed to its wide use not only across the African continent but also around the globe. The book pivots on the question of whether standardized versions of African languages have empowered or oppressed. It is inevitable that the selection and promotion of one version of a language as standard—a move typically associated with missionaries and colonial regimes—negatively affected those whose language was suddenly deemed nonstandard. Before reconciling the consequences of codification, however, Robinson argues that one must seek to understand the process itself. The history of Standard Swahili demonstrates how events, people, and ideas move rapidly and sometimes surprisingly between linguistic, political, social, or temporal categories.Robinson conducted her research in Zanzibar, mainland Tanzania, and the United Kingdom. Organized around periods of conversation, translation, and codification from 1864 to 1964, the book focuses on the intellectual history of Swahili’s standardization. The story begins in mid-nineteenth-century Zanzibar, home of missionaries, formerly enslaved students, and a printing press, and concludes on the mainland in the mid-twentieth century, as nationalist movements added Standard Swahili to their anticolonial and nation-building toolkits. This outcome was not predetermined, however, and Robinson offers a new context for the strong emotions that the language continues to evoke in East Africa. The history of Standard Swahili is not one story, but rather the connected stories of multiple communities contributing to the production of knowledge. The book reflects this multiplicity by including the narratives of colonial officials and anticolonial nationalists; East African clerks, students, newspaper editors, editorialists, and their readers; and library patrons, academic linguists, formerly enslaved children, and missionary preachers. The book reconstructs these stories on their own terms and reintegrates them into a new composite that demonstrates the central place of language in the history of East Africa and beyond

Abstract: Das Nachleben zu Lebzeiten gestalten.

Abstract: The first English translation of Magnus the Lawmender’s law code, this book allows students and scholars to interpret, compare and add their perspectives to this crucial source to European legal history. The Laws of the Land are one of the very few law books issued in the Middle Ages which regulated a whole kingdom. It stayed in force until the late 17th century, shaping society, politics and law in Norway and its surrounding regions for over 400 years. This book is separated into three parts. The first is an introduction to the laws written by the translator, Jóhanna Katrín Friðriksdóttir. The second and longest section of the book is a complete English translation of the Laws of the Land. The final part is a glossary, which lays out the most important Old Norse legal terms with English translations. The glossary also contains explanations and conversions of religious feast days which are relevant in the law. Providing familiarity with the Laws of the Land, this book is crucial to students and scholars of Medieval history alike to understanding the social, legal, political, and intellectual developments of the Nordic High Middle Ages

Abstract: Why does the history of dogmatism deserve our attention? This open access book analyses uses of the term, following dogmatism from Victorian Britain to Cold War America, examining why it came to be regarded as a vice, and how understandings of its meaning have evolved. Whilst the field of scientific thought is committed to continuous innovation, ideas about dogmatism – with their roots in ancient philosophy – are pervasive in scientific thought today. Carrying connotations of both vice and ecclesiastical authority, the term’s prevalence during the ‘age of science’, and the rise of new thought categories such as totalitarianism and creationism, prompted scholars to repeat the old wisdom that science is incompatible with dogmatism. Tracing the concept across decades and different disciplines, Paul and Stoeger demonstrate how it has survived not only the passage of time, but changes in language and scientific methodologies. The ebook editions of this book are available open access under a CC BY-NC-ND 4.0 licence on bloomsburycollections.com. Open access was funded by Dutch Research Council (NWO)
Abstract: "This ... book traces the history of dogmatism as a scholarly vice term. Starting in ancient Greece, but with an emphasis on the nineteenth and twentieth centuries, it follows the term across periods, countries, and disciplines. It shows how new layers of meaning emerged over time, while older ones sometimes remained surprisingly persistent"--

Abstract: Edited by Martin Biddle with a catalogue of the known coins of the mint by Yvonne Harvey, this volume records and illustrates the minting of silver pennies in Winchester between the reigns of Alfred the Great and Henry III, a period of three and a half centuries. At the Mint, which was situated in the area of the High Street to the east of where the city’s cross now stands, at least 24 million silver pennies (possibly as many as 50 million) were struck. Five and a half thousand survive in museums and collections all over the world. These have been sought out and photographed (some 3200 coins in 6400 images detailing both sides), and minutely catalogued by Yvonne Harvey for this volume. 〈br〉〈br〉 During the period from late in the reign of Alfred to the time of Henry III, dies for striking the coins were produced centrally under royal authority in the most sophisticated system of monetary control at the time in the western world. In this first account of a major English mint to have been made in forty years, a team of leading authorities have studied and analysed the use the Winchester moneyers made of the dies, and together with the size, weight, and the surviving number of coins from each pair of dies, have produced a detailed account of the varying fortunes of the mint over this period. Their results are critical for the economic history of England and the changing status of Winchester over this long period, and provide the richest available source for the history of the name of the city and the personal names of its citizens in the later Anglo-Saxon period

Abstract: This volume explores the production of knowledge of normativity in the age of early modern globalisation by looking at an extraordinarily pragmatic and normative book: Manual de Confessores, by the Spanish canon law professor Martín de Azpilcueta (1492-1586). Intertwining expertise, methods, and questions of legal history and book history, this book follows the actors and analyses the factors involved in the production, circulation, and use of the Manual, both in printed and manuscript forms, in the territories of the early modern Iberian Empires and of the Catholic Church. It convincingly illustrates the different dynamics related to the materiality of this object that contributed to “glocal” knowledge production. Abstract: How can immortality be a curse? According to the Wandering Jew legend, as Jesus made his way to Calvary, a man refused him rest, cruelly taunting him to hurry to meet his fate. In response, Jesus cursed the man to wander until the Second Coming. Since the medieval period, the legend has inspired hundreds of adaptations by artists and writers. Instrument of Memory: Encounters with the Wandering Jew, the first English-language study of the legend in over fifty years, is also the first to examine the influence of the legend’s medieval and early modern sources over the centuries into the present day. Using the lens of memory studies, the work shows how the Christian tradition of the legend centered the memory of the Passion at the heart of the Wandering Jew’s curse. Instrument of Memory also shows how Jewish artists and writers have reimagined the legend through Jewish memory traditions. Through this focus on memory, Jewish adapters of the legend create complex renderings of the Wandering Jew that recognize not only the entanglement of Jewish and Christian memory, but also the impact of that entanglement on Jewish subjects. This book presents a complex, sympathetic, and more fully realized version of the legend while challenging the limits of the presentism of memory studies

Abstract: This book provides a novel approach to the history of medieval Anatolia by analysing political, religious and cultural developments in the region of Kastamonu during the reign of the Chobanid dynasty (c. 1211–1309). During the 13th century, the Chobanids consolidated a local dynasty in western Anatolia – a borderland between Islam and Christianity – becoming cultural actors patronising the production of religious, scientific and administrative works in the Persian language. These works, though surviving today in manuscript form, have received little attention in modern historiography. The book therefore attends to this gap in the research, incorporating a detailed study of texts by little-known authors from the time. The book explores the relationship between Islam and the Chobanid dynasty in the context of the wider process of Islamisation in medieval Anatolia, hypothesising that Turkmen dynasties played a fundamental role in this process of Islamisation and acculturation. The Chobanids of Kastamonu, then, offers an in-depth study of a Turkmen local dynasty that achieved political autonomy, financial independence and cultural patronage in medieval Anatolia vis-à-vis the main political powers of the time. Attentive to religious diversity, state formation and processes of transculturation in medieval Anatolia, the book is key reading for scholars of Middle Eastern history and Islamic studies

Abstract: A history of urban travel demand modeling (UTDM) and its enormous influence on American life from the 1920s to the present. For better and worse, the automobile has been an integral part of the American way of life for decades. Its ascendance would have been far less spectacular, however, had engineers and planners not devised urban travel demand modeling (UTDM). This book tells the story of this irreplaceable engineering tool that has helped cities accommodate continuous rise in traffic from the 1950s on. Beginning with UTDM's origins as a method to help plan new infrastructure, Konstantinos Chatzis follows its trajectory through new generations of models that helped make optimal use of existing capacity and examines related policy instruments, including the recent use of intelligent transportation systems.Chatzis investigates these models as evolving entities involving humans and nonhumans that were shaped through a specific production process. In surveying the various generations of UTDM, he delves into various means of production (from tabulating machines to software packages) and travel survey methods (from personal interviews to GPS tracking devices and smartphones) used to obtain critical information. He also looks at the individuals who have collectively built a distinct UTDM social world by displaying specialized knowledge, developing specific skills, and performing various tasks and functions, and by communicating, interacting, and even competing with one another.Original and refreshingly accessible, Forecasting Travel in Urban America offers the first detailed history behind the thinkers and processes that impact the lives of millions of city dwellers every day

Abstract: In the middle of the 9th century, the Abbey of Fulda founded a subsidiary monastery on the Weser, which was likely transformed into a collegiate monastery in the 10th century. In 1259, the abbot of Fulda sold his rights to the Bishop of Minden. After the Reformation, the episcopal rights passed to the Welfish sovereign in 1576. The collegiate monastery underwent a gradual secularization process from 1850 to 1863. The biographies of the personnel of the Boniface monastery attest to the close connections between the foundation and the city. Beyond Hameln, the book provides prosopographical material for the comparative study of medieval collegiate monasteries

Abstract: This volume presents the results of a research project carried out by a team at the University of Milan. Since meeting almost 'for fun' in 2009, this team has grown over the years, and has now a place in international research on the value of playful activities and artifacts. More precisely, this publication is associated with the LALLACT project (Lexicon of Ancient Ludonims, Ludic Activities, and Cultural Tradition), which is dedicated to creating a digital Lexicon of games, starting with the spinning top and blind man's buff. The collected essays represent the outcome of a fruitful interdisciplinary discussion on these two games. More specifically, the miscellaneous volume proposed here is linked to the LALLACT project - Lexicon of Ancient Ludonims project. Ludic Activities and Cultural Tradition, whose ambitious goal is the creation of a prototype of a digital Lexicon of the game, starting from two 'pilot' voices, respectively the game of the spinning top and blind man's buff. The collected essays constitute the outcome, precious and at times unexpected, of a fruitful multidisciplinary discussion on the topics indicated

Abstract: Dass Muße im 18.

Abstract: The Mamluks (648-923/1250-1517), who ruled Egypt, Syria, and the Hijaz region, are considered to be one of the most important Muslim-Turkish states in Islamic history because they put an end to the Crusader threat in Syria and stopped the westward advance of the Mongols (Ilkhanids) who had destroyed the eastern part of the Islamic world. The Mamluks’ establishment of security and stability in their lands enabled the ulama, who were affected by the political turmoil in Andalusia and Anatolia, as well as central Iraq and Iran in the early 7th/13th century, to turn to the Egyptian-Sham region. In addition to the political stability they created, the Mamluks built many scientific institutions in cities such as Cairo, Damascus, Aleppo, and Jerusalem. They provided wide opportunities to scholars, making these cities the most important centers of knowledge. The rich scholarly environment in Egypt and Damascus, which attracted many scholars from various parts of the Islamic world, paved the way for the writing of many works in almost every field of Islamic sciences and the emergence of new and voluminous encyclopedic genres. Thus, an enormous amount of literature was created in fiqh, hadith, tafsīr, kalām, mysticism, philosophy, logic, qirāʾa, sīra, history, and tabāqat. The understanding and interpretation of this literature, which is the result of an unprecedented scholarly effort in Islamic history, requires the contribution of many researchers in different fields. As a result of this need, interest in the scholarly and cultural accumulation of the Mamluk period is increasing both in international academic circles and in our country. Although the number and quality of studies on the political history of the Mamluks are not yet at the desired level, some studies have been conducted in the Turkish literature. However, research on the ulama, scientific institutions, types of works, and the status of Islamic sciences during the Mamluk period is still in its infancy. To overcome this deficiency to some extent, the Institute of Islamic Studies at Istanbul University (then known as the Center for Islamic Studies at Istanbul University) organized a workshop titled Islamic Sciences in the Mamluk Period on 19-20 September 2019. Thus, it was aimed to evaluate the status of the studies on the ulama and Islamic sciences related to the Mamluk period, to propose new research topics in the areas of need, to ensure cooperation among those interested in this field, and to create a basis for future studies. At the end of this workshop, the need to organize an international meeting with wide participation in the scholarly tradition in the Mamluk period was expressed. For this purpose, an international symposium titled The Tradition of Knowledge in the Mamluk Period-I (13th and 14th Centuries) was organized on September 28-29, 2021, hosted by Istanbul University in cooperation with the Institute of Islamic Studies at Istanbul University and the Foundation for Research in Islamic Sciences (ISAV). In the symposium, many researchers made presentations on tafsīr, hadith, fiqh, historiography, philosophy, kalām, mysticism, culture-literature, ulama, and scientific institutions. This book was formed by revising some of the papers presented at the symposium during the publication phase. The full text of the relevant papers has been reviewed and turned into articles. The thematically re-planned book consists of seven chapters: Qurʾānic Sciences and Tafsīr, Fiqh Thought and Literature, Hanafi Fiqh and Hadith Studies, Kalām, History and Sīra Writing, Language and Literature, Scientific Institutions and Ulama. We would like to take this opportunity to express our gratitude to Prof. Dr. Mahmut Ak, Rector of Istanbul University, and Prof. Dr. Salih Tuğ, Chairman of the Board of Trustees of ISAV, for their support during the organization of the symposium
Abstract: Mısır, Suriye ve Hicaz bölgesine hâkim olan Memlükler (648-923/1250-1517) Suriye topraklarındaki Haçlı tehdidine son vermeleri ve İslâm dünyasının doğusunu tahrip eden Moğolların (İlhanlılar) batıya doğru ilerleyişlerini durdurmaları sebebiyle İslâm tarihindeki en önemli Müslüman-Türk devletlerinden birisi sayılmaktadır.

Abstract: A sweeping new history that reveals how British, African, and American merchants developed the transatlantic slave trade This is a landmark study given its clear status as easily the best researched and most comprehensive book on the British slave trade to date. -David Eltis, coauthor of Atlas of the Transatlantic Slave Trade A masterful account of one of the most brutal moments in the history of capitalist modernity. Radburn brilliantly details all aspects of the process of commodification of human beings in the Liverpool slave trade, vividly depicting the long journeys endured by Africans in Africa, across the Atlantic, and in the Americas. -Leonardo Marques, Universidade Federal Fluminense During the eighteenth century, Britains slave trade exploded in size. Formerly a small and geographically constricted business, the trade had, by the eve of the American Revolution, grown into a transatlantic system through which fifty thousand men, women, and children were enslaved every year. In this wide-ranging history, Nicholas Radburn explains how thousands of merchants collectively transformed the slave trade by devising highly efficient but violent new business methods. African brokers developed commercial infrastructure that facilitated the enslavement and sale of millions of people. Britons invented shipping methods that quelled enslaved peoples constant resistance on the Middle Passage. And American slave traders formulated brutal techniques through which shiploads of people could be quickly sold to colonial buyers. Truly Atlantic-wide in its vision, this study shows how the slave trade dragged millions of people into its terrible vortex and became one of the most important phenomena in world history.

Abstract: The origins of the incest taboo have puzzled many of the most influential minds of the West, from Plutarch to St. Augustine, St. Thomas Aquinas, Martin Luther, David Hume, Lewis Henry Morgan, Sigmund Freud, Emile Durkheim, Edward Westermarck, and Claude Lévi-Strauss. This book puts the discussion of incest on a new foundation. It is the first attempt to thoroughly examine the rich literature, from philosophical, theological, and legal treatises to psychological and biological-genetic studies, to a wide variety of popular cultural media over a long period of time. The book offers a detailed examination of discursive and figurative representations of incest during five selected periods, from 1600 to the present. The incest discussion for each period is complemented with a presentation of dominant kinship structures and changes, without arguing for causal relations. Part I deals with the legacy of ecclesiastical marriage prohibitions of the Middle Ages: Historians dealing with the Reformation have wondered about the political and social implications of theological debates about the incest rules, the Enlightenment opted for sociological considerations of the household and a new anthropology based on the passions, Baroque discourse focused upon sexual relations among kin by marriage , while Enlightenment and Romantic discussions worried the intimacy of siblings. The first section of Part II deals with the six decades around 1900, during which European and American cultures obsessed about the sexuality of women. Almost everyone concurred in the idea that mother made the family what it was; that she configured the household, kept the lines of kinship vibrant, and stood at the threshold as stern gatekeeper, and many thought that she managed these tasks through her sexuality and an eroticized relationship with sons. Another story line, taken up in the section "Intermezzo," this one about the physical and mental consequences of inbreeding, appeared after 1850. To what extent do close-kin marriages pose risks for progeny? At its center, lay the incest problematic, now restated: Is avoidance of kin genetically programmed? Do all cultures know about risks of consanguinity? As for the twenty-first century, evolutionary and genetic assumptions are challenged by a living world population containing roughly one billion offspring of cousin marriages. Part III deals with one of the perhaps most remarkable reconfigurations of Western kinship in the aftermath of World War I: The shift from an endogamous to an exogamous alliance system centered on the "nuclear family." An historical anomaly, this family form began to dissolve almost as soon as it came together and, in the process, shifted the focus of incest concerns to a new pairing: father and daughter. By the 1970s, when the father/daughter problematic swept all other considerations of incest aside, that relationship had come to be modeled, for the most part, around power and its abusive potential. As for "incest," its representations in the last three decades of the twentieth century no longer focused on biologically damaged progeny but rather on power abuses in the nuclear family: sexual "abuse." By the mid-1990s, Western culture at least partly redirected its gaze away from father and daughter towards siblings, especially towards brothers and sisters and the sexual boundaries and erotics of their relationships. Correspondingly, siblings became a "model organism" for psychotherapy, evolutionary biology, and the science of genetics. ; The origins of the incest taboo have puzzled many of the most influential minds of the West, from Plutarch to St. Augustine, St. Thomas Aquinas, Martin Luther, David Hume, Lewis Henry Morgan, Sigmund Freud, Emile Durkheim, Edward Westermarck, and Claude Lévi-Strauss. Correspondingly, siblings became a "model organism" for psychotherapy, evolutionary biology, and the science of genetics

Abstract: With its reconversion to a mosque in August 2020, the former monastic church of Saint Saviour in Chora entered yet another phase of its long history. The present book examines the Chora/Kariye Camii site from a transcultural perspective, tracing its continuous transformations in form and function from Late Antiquity to the present day. Whereas previous literature has almost exclusively placed emphasis on the Byzantine phase of the building’s history, including the status of its mosaics and paintings as major works of Palaiologan culture, this study is the first to investigate the shifting meanings with which the Chora/Kariye Camii site has been invested over time and across uninterrupted alterations, interventions, and transformations. Bringing together contributions from archaeologists, art historians, philologists, anthroplogists and historians, the volume provides a new framework for understanding not only this building but, more generally, edifices that have undergone interventions and transformations within multicultural societies

Abstract: Since the 1970s, environmental issues have become a major concern for European citizens and thus for European politicians. In the same time frame the political sphere in Europe, and in particular within the European Union, has also been undergoing major transformations. Dealing with environmental issues over more than fifty years in a historical perspective enables us to gain a better understanding of these transformations, notably the emergence of a European public sphere and how this is changing decision-making processes. Drawing on recent research results from various disciplines, including history, sociology, law and political sciences, this volume addresses the methodological challenge of a European perspective on a transnational subject – one that is commonly distorted by a national prism. It shows how perceptions of the environment are increasingly converging and how these convergences of views across political or linguistic borders in the long run exert an undeniable influence not only on political debates but also on political decisions across Europe. Revealing European characteristics of perceptions, debates and policies, this volume contributes to a history of Europeanisation beyond the usual political turning points and limits

Abstract: At the beginning of the 21st century, the role that the history of law should play in the training of jurists cannot be the same as the discipline played in the last century, hence the importance of reflecting on the scope that from now on the subjects of historical content should have in the different curricula in which the knowledge of law in its historical dimension has a place. The delimitation of the role to be played by historical education requires reflection on the three traditional dimensions of knowledge, the material, spatial and temporal dimensions. This is the reasoning that justified the first symposium of the Spanish Society of Law Historians

Abstract: "Verantwortung und Passion - Emma und Henry Budge als großzügige Stifter und Förderer der hamburgischen Kultur.

Abstract: The text is a guided itinerary in the knowledge and interpretations now critically acquired, but also in those in need of further investigation, dedicated to the Sardinian eighteenth century, one of the most significant centuries of the confrontation between tradition and innovation, between preservation and reformism, that Sardinian history can number. This is the first volume in the "Sardiniae memoria" series, a series of textbooks on Sardinia, designed to be usable by both university students and high school seniors

Abstract: These are good times for research on Phrygian. More scholars than ever are focusing on this language and many novelties (including new inscriptions and innovative interpretations) are emerging relatively frequently. Promoting the diversity of starting point and focuses is a way to improve our knowledge and to achieve a better vision of the Phrygian language and the people who once spoke and wrote it. This book offers a range of approaches to Phrygian-related issues, with contributions from six relevant scholars working on this language (Ignasi-Xavier Adiego, Milena Anfosso, María Paz de Hoz, Anna Elisabeth Hämmig, Bartomeu Obrador-Cursach an Zsolt Simon)

Abstract: How did nobility try to live up to its exalted social position? With this volume, the Institut für niederrheinische Kulturgeschichte und Regionalentwicklung (InKuR) at the University of Duisburg-Essen, in cooperation with Gerd Dethlefs, has focused on the culture of nobility in the Lower Rhine-Westphalian region. The focus lies on the methods of conflict resolution within this social class in the Middle Ages and early modern period, from duels to court proceedings. Furthermore, an exhibition at the Ruhr Museum on the nobility in the Ruhr region, which was on display in the city of Essen in 2021/22, is presented. Other contributions are dealing with the Christian missionization of the Lower Rhine region and the siege of the city of Moers by Royal Spanish troops during the Eighty Years' War. A fundamental account of the relationship between the Dutch and German languages rounds off the volume

Abstract: The ancient Near Eastern city of Emar (also called Imar)—modern Old Meskene (Meskene Qadima) or Tell Meskene—was discovered in the course of rescue excavations conducted during the construction of a dam near Tabqa, in northern Syria. Between 1972 and 1976, excavations were carried out by a French team. Archaeological activities were resumed in 1991, first by the Department of Antiquities in Aleppo, and then from 1996 to 2002 by a joint Syrian-German mission. During the French excavations, more than 1100 clay tablets—or fragments of tablets—were discovered, most of them written in Akkadian and Sumerian, covering a wide range of genres. Illegal digs—that took place after the French team left the site—also produced about 350 tablets. The material can be dated approximately to the second half of the 2nd millennium BC, i.e., the Late Bronze Age. The extraordinary importance of the Emar texts led to the development of an international and very productive field of research that goes beyond disciplinary boundaries. Against this background, the idea of a thematically organised bibliography of studies on Emar was born in the early 2000s and published in eight issues in the journal Ugarit-Forschungen. The 50th anniversary of the start of the excavations at Emar is a good opportunity to make the entire bibliography available in book form. To the usual thematic outline, a list of book reviews has been added, as well as a complete bibliographical list, arranged by author

Abstract: Why is the tea-room entrance, or nijiriguchi, so narrow? How did the practice of “passing the bowl,” or mawashinomi, come about? And what hidden meaning lies behind the ritual purification of hands and mouth, or chōzu? Chanoyu, the art of preparing tea, developed against a backdrop of social turmoil in late medieval Japan. Through the singular figure of Sen no Rikyū, it found expression as wabi-cha, or wabi tea, the foundation of Japanese tea culture today. Here, scholar and curator Kumakura Isao investigates the unique cultural value of tea. He examines its rituals and behaviors, elaborates its structure, spaces, and style, and delves into the history of everything from the tea whisk to the tea room itself. Drawing on folklore studies and performing-arts history, Kumakura develops a new perspective on Japan’s culture of tea

Abstract: Castles and nobility in the Middle Ages are not only considered together in historical research. For the lower nobility in particular, the possession of castles was decisive for the social positioning of the respective noble family. In order to sharpen this connection, the dissertation looks at both together and examines the concrete significance of castles in the formation phase of the lower nobility between 1250 and 1400. The focus of the regional and interdisciplinary study is on noble families and their castles from the area around the Counts of Helfenstein in the region between Geislingen an der Steige and Blaubeuren in the Swabian Alb. It examines aristocratic strategies of homemaking, of positioning themselves in the world. The center of this positioning was the castle. It appears as a spatial and social point of reference, which was important in almost every area of aristocratic life: it was the hub and nucleus of (the exercise of) power, the center of social group affiliations as well as the stage and medium of cultural participation. Castle thus means far more than just the building stock that has possibly survived to this day, but the overall social and spatial phenomenon of a center with many functions. Access to this multifunctional 'castle' phenomenon opened up a wide range of possibilities for the lower nobility and thus opportunities to position themselves in all areas of aristocratic affiliation. In this way, castles can be described as a socio-cultural resource in the sense of the concept of the Collaborative Research Center 1070 RESOURCE CULTURES

Abstract: Examining diversity as a fundamental reality of empire, this book explores European colonial empires, both terrestrial and maritime, to show how they addressed the questions of how to manage diversity. These questions range from the local to the supra-regional, and from the management of people to that of political and judicial systems. Taking an intersectional approach incorporating categories such as race, religion, subjecthood, and social and legal status, the contributions of the volume show how old and new modes of creating social difference took shape in an increasingly globalized early modern world, and what contemporary legacies these ‘diversity formations’ left behind. This volume shows diversity and imperial projects to be both contentious and mutually constitutive: on the one hand, the conditions of empire created divisions between people through official categorizations (such as racial classifications and designations of subjecthood) and through discriminately applied extractive policies, from taxation to slavery. On the other hand, imperial subjects, communities, and polities within and adjacent to the empire asserted themselves through a diverse range of affiliations and identities that challenged any notion of a unilateral, universal imperial authority. This book highlights the multidimensionality and interconnectedness of diversity in imperial settings and will be useful reading to students and scholars of the history of colonial empires, global history, and race

Abstract: Servants were for a long time the dominant form of labour in Sweden. To serve, at a farm or at a manor, was ever since the thirteenth century the most common way to make a living, since poor people could by law be forced to accept work for a master. Service hence replaced thraldom in Sweden. In From slaves to servants, historian Martin Andersson explains how the regulations of the servants’ lives were gradually sharpened. Labourers had to become servants under the threats of punishment and forced conscription into the army. Wages were legally reduced, while other forms of making a living were blocked. The master’s right to use physical violence was increased, while the servant’s duty to obey was expanded. By the end of the sixteenth century, most farmhands and maids worked at manors or for the richest of the peasantry. They had consequently minimal chances of themselves becoming masters. Through studies of a rich material of regional law codes, court records, fine registers, royal letters and manuals for manor owners, the historian paints a rich picture of the daily lives of servants – a life formed by legal uncertainty, coercion, and poverty

Abstract: Paradoxically, while the fragmentation, desecration or abandonment of remains is attested in many archaeological or historical contexts, the intentional absence of funerary rites has not yet been the subject of systematic or comparative studies in the social sciences. Therefore, little is known about what leads a society to intentionally deprive an individual of funeral treatment. Are the modalities of funeral deprivation always and everywhere the same? Or do they vary according to socio-historical context, being singularly linked to crisis situations? What are the different issues at stake in the deprivation of funeral treatment? More generally and analytically, on the basis of what concrete elements can we identify and qualify situations of deprivation of funeral rites? To answer this vast set of questions, this volume gathers twelve contributions from archaeologists, anthropologists and historians, the fruit of collective work carried out during study sessions that took place in 2021 and 2022 in Montpellier and Marseille. These sessions initiated a particularly rich and dense interdisciplinary and diachronic reflection on the diversity of motivations that lead to the intentional deprivation of funerals. Taken together, the twelve chapters also invite us to reflect on the intellectual path that allows us to attest the absence of funerary treatment, from archaeological, historical or ethnographic data, and on the intellectual and theoretical tools available to approach the question of the deprivation of funerals

Abstract: Finland was an autonomous Grand Duchy in the Russian Empire during the years 1808–1917. At this time nationalism as well as other ideologies reached Finland from Europe, which strengthened the willingness to change both in society and on a governmental level. The Fennoman movement, which was a movement focusing both on language and on nationalism, became the core of the Finnish self-perception. The goal was to define Finland as a coherent and separate country in relation to its neighbouring countries. Collecting folk poems and learning to know one’s home country became essential. People saw the Kalevala poems as a way to understand and define the Finnish identity and the history of the Finnish people. Especially young people with a background in academia were intrigued by these ideas. University students collected poems all over the Grand Duchy of Finland as well as in the Russian part of Carelia, in Sweden, Norway and in Ingria. Students who collected these folk poems also wrote travelogues about their travels and all this material was handed over to The Finnish Literature Society. These documents are unique and there has not been much research done on them, especially with the focus on how the young academic generation during the age of autonomy defined their home country, their national self-perception, themselves and the commoners living in the rural parts of the country. This book reviews travelogues written by one hundred university students who travelled in the country collecting folk poems during 1836–1917. The book offers insight into how the students described Finland and what it meant to be Finnish. Travelogues can be defined as a sort of hybrid of texts. They consist of a mixture of letters, journals, biographical texts and travel books. Consequently, the image that the students depict of Finland is in this study based upon research perspectives and methods used in textual research, oral history and travel literature. The travelogues written by students previously evoked the interest of researchers who mainly studied certain traits of poem collectors, tradition bearers or poems. However, the travelogues contain plenty of information about the lives of the people who lived in the areas where the poems were collected. The descriptions of Finland in the travelogues do not represent the “real” 19th century Finland, but instead it is a story written and created by university students. The characteristics that are presented in The Land of Hope are based on how the intelligentsia perceived “real” Finnishness as opposed to the uneducated commoners living in the rural parts of the country. The most notable themes in the travelogues are the state and the future of the society and of being Finnish. Another theme is the otherization of those who were uneducated commoners. These themes describe the fears and hopes that university students had about Finland. They also show us that the travelogues were ideological texts about Finland and Finnishness that united the collectors of folk poetry. This book studies the collection of folk poetry in the context of the ideologies during the age of autonomy and it explains what the collection of poems meant and who were involved in it. Furthermore, the book gives an insight into the possibilities to pursue academic studies and it also presents the most essential sources of students’ knowledge about Finland at that point of time

Abstract: Every civilization has developed different forms of knowledge and techniques to manage and exploit water, an essential element for human life, but also to defend itself from the threats that can derive from it. In preindustrial times, the need to manage such a precious commodity led to the development of different technologies, the construction of infrastructures, the creation of special judiciaries, but it also fuelled conflicts between subjects who claimed privileged or exclusive access to water resources. In addition, the risks posed by the proximity of waterways or lake basins often led societies to develop prevention techniques and practices. This range of issues is at the heart of the essays collected in this volume, which examine various medium and large cities located in Central Western Europe - from the Rhine Valley to the Iberian Peninsula, from Paris to Palermo - between the fourteenth and the nineteenth centuries

Abstract: In state formation research, princely houses have been a blind spot. The development of states has been discussed from many perspectives, like interstate competition, internal social conflicts, fiscal-military developments, etc., but at the centre of most European states, there was a princely house. These ruling houses have been overlooked in studies about state formation. What’s more, when discussing such dynasties, the vertical chronological perspective (grandfather-father-son) is all dominating, for instance in the focus on dynastic continuity, dynastic culture and representation, and the like. This collection of essays highlights the horizontal perspective (ruler, all children, siblings, cousins), in asking how the members of a princely family acted as a power network. The quest is to develop an understanding how this family network interplayed with other factors in the state formation process. This volume brings together existing knowledge of the topic with the aim of exchanging insights and furthering knowledge

Abstract: The paper describes a research on Leonardo da Vinci’s activity as a military architect in Piombino, Tuscany, in the early years of the 16th century. These studies use modern digital survey technologies in order to recognize if, in the remains of the town’s defensive system, there are still traces of the intervention carried out in Leonardo’s time, and integrate these data with the analysis of historical-documentary sources and the results of recent archaeological and stratigraphic analyses. The achieved results were finally compared with Leonardo da Vinci’s drawings, obtaining some interesting feedback

Abstract: Slavery takes many forms. This was also true in Roman antiquity, even though modern scholarship on Roman slavery paints the picture of a very homogenous institution. This volume intends to correct that perception. In it, renowned legal historians analyse juristic writings to showcase the social differences among slaves reflected in these texts. In this way, the papers collected here convey an impression of the complexity of Roman slave law

Abstract: This collection engages with debates within ‘criminology’ about matters of colonial power, which have come to be conceptualized through the language of ‘decolonization’. It explores the uneasy relationship between the ‘criminal question’ and colonialism, and foregrounds the relevance of the legacies of this relationship to criminological enquiries. It invites and seeks to pursue a better understanding of the links between imperialism and colonialism on the one hand, and nationalism and globalization on the other, by exposing the imprints of these links on processes of marginalization, racialization, and exclusion that are central to contemporary criminal justice practices within and beyond nation-states. It advances this objective by examining the reverberations of colonial history and logics in the operation of crime control. The volume also aims to explore the critical potential of criminological scholarship, as a field that sits at the margins of several disciplines and perspectives, through a direct engagement with Southern epistemologies and perspectives. To do so, it brings together established and emerging scholars from the humanities and social sciences, who work at the intersections of criminal justice and postcolonial studies

Abstract: Dieu au Collège de France, volume 6 of the « Passage des disciplines » series, includes texts that were presented during the symposium “Dieu at the Collège de France”, which was held in June 2021, after the delays caused by the pandemic, as part of “Passage des disciplines. Global history of the Collège de France, 19th-20th century”. This research program and the series associated with it examines the genesis of scientific and literary fields of knowledge, their mapping and their evolution during the 19th and 20th centuries, on both national and international levels, from the standpoint afforded by the history of the renewal of academic chairs at the Collège de France. “Dieu” is, to be sure, not a new 19th discipline, or a “founder of discursivity”, as Foucault called the scholars who had invented not only new discourses, but, more broadly, discursive continents, new “épistemes”. God is certainly an ancient “inventor of discursivity” and the discursive continent that he has launched is considerably more diffuse than those which come from Freud, Darwin, Einstein or Durkheim, which were the object of preceding symposia, and, for the first three ones, of the first three volumes of the series. Yet, it seemed to us possible to examine, in collaboration with Thomas Römer, holder of the chair The Hebrew Bible and its Contexts, the science of God and how the Collège de France, at different times of its history, and through this institution, the university, higher education in general, the life of ideas, made way for the sciences of religion

Abstract: Leonardo’s maps are to be analysed not only in relation to all his works, but also in the context of the cartography between the second half of the 15th century and the early 16th century and the techniques of so-called vedutismo pittorico. The aim of the contribution is to highlight – through a series of case studies – the potential of Leonardo's maps as sources for the reconstruction of the historical landscape. The research, starting from some of the maps produced by Leonardo, focused on two of the strands that appeared to be most significant: how to georeference Leonardo’s maps in a GIS environment; topographical analysis aimed at recognising main population centres and road network

Abstract: Leonardo’s life and work coincide with the time the modern world was born, involving a strong change in the relationship with the territory and an acceleration of human subjugation of nature. Leonardo’s artistic and technical work moves between two polarities: the idea of a generating nature and the human aspiration to domination, with a vision of knowledge not yet fragmented by the specialism of modernity. Leonardo’s multifaceted activity is a child of his age: of a Renaissance that was more innovation than method and of a period in which political transformations and a demographic recovery drew new attention to the territory

Abstract: "Ein Porträt Ernst Cassirers als akademischer Lehrer und Rektor der Hamburgischen Universität und als engagierter liberaler Demokrat.

    Keywords: History ; Middle-Ages ; 14th-16th century ; Kingdom of Sicily ; Orsini ; lordship
Abstract: The feudal lordship of Southern Italy and in Southern Italy is a long-lasting historiographic theme, which has taken on new life in recent years. The rethinking of the interpretative categories of the medieval lordship, a series of in-depth analyses of the late-medieval rural societies and the characteristics of the feudal powers, the detailed reconstructions of their forms of administration and management, the investigations into the semantics of representations have allowed the overcoming of that historiographic paradigm of a Southern baronial class which was internally homogeneous and monolithic in its orientations. Aiming to follow this path, this book puts a case study forth: the lordship of the Orsini, counts of Nola, between Terra di Lavoro and Principato Ultra (1293-1528). Using a wide variety of sources (documentary, literary, iconographic and architectural), the author reconstructs how the Orsini were able to entrench themselves within this territory, exposing their network of relationships with Nola’s most prominent families, and analysing the processes of their self-representation through artistic patronage

Abstract: At various junctures in the contemporary age, the relationship between Russia and the West has occupied a crucial place in the debates of Russian intellectual and political elites about the peculiar path and historical destiny of their country, constituting at the same time an important factor in Europe’s cultural self-definition, geohistorical contours, security system. The outbreak of the Russian-Ukrainian war has invested a question that had already become “classic” with a renewed, urgent topicality. The essays collected in the volume range over the time span from the final decades of the Tsarist Empire to the present day, focusing on topics such as Nikolai Danilevsky’s influential reflection on Rossiia i Evropa (A. Venturi), Max Weber’s analysis of Russian constitutionalism in 1905-07 (F. Fera), the pro-Westerner elements in Russian nationalism at the beginning of the twentieth century (G. Savino), the contribution of Russian emigration to the conceptualization of the West/East cleavage in the interwar period (R. Gravina), the Soviet Union in the vision of A.J. Toynbee (T. Tagliaferri), the “Ukrainian question” between the 20th and 21st centuries (R. Valle), the competition over the post-Soviet space between the Russian Federation and the European Union (M. Puleri). In the introduction, G. Cigliano dwells on the recent aspects of the relationship between Russia, Europe and the West which seem more suitable for interpreting the roots of the ongoing conflict in a historical-historiographical perspective

Abstract: "Ein Porträt vom Leben, Werk und Wirken der Ärztin Rahel Liebeschütz-Plaut.

Abstract: The concept of sustainable development refers to four distinct areas—human, social, economic, and environmental—known as the four pillars of sustainability. Cultural industries are a challenge for the future of culture. This field includes four main topics, namely features, domination, individualization, and the characterization of the culture industry itself. The purpose of cultural industries is important for ensuring the continued development of society and is at the heart of a creative economy for generating considerable economic wealth.Design and cultural creativity will eventually be implemented into specific designs. The complexity of the design itself requires careful consideration in all aspects and especially in the field of engineering. How can we make designs more in line with human nature?
