Jahrhundert, abstrakte Kunst aus dem 20. Jahrhundert: Was ein Bild zeigt oder gerade nicht zeigt, enthüllt ein bestimmtes figuratives Schema, das durch die formalen Mittel und durch die Anordnung, mit der es seine Wirkungskraft entfaltet, gekennzeichnet ist. Bilder ermöglichen uns so einen Zugang zu dem, was unterschiedliche menschliche Lebensformen ausmacht. Gestützt auf einen globalen und historisch weit ausgreifenden Vergleich von Werken einer atemberaubenden Vielfalt entwickelt Philippe Descola in seinem Buch die Grundlagen für eine Anthropologie der menschlichen Bildkunst. Die bildliche Darstellung ist nicht allein der Fantasie derer überlassen, die die Bilder erschaffen. Wir stellen nur dar, was wir wahrnehmen oder uns vorstellen, und wir stellen uns nur vor und nehmen nur wahr, was uns die Gewohnheit zu unterscheiden gelehrt hat. Der visuelle Pfad, den wir bei der Abbildung der Welt einschlagen, hängt für Descola daher davon ab, welcher der vier Regionen des von ihm entdeckten ontologischen Archipels wir angehören: Animismus, Naturalismus, Totemismus oder Analogismus. Jeder von ihnen entspricht eine bestimmte Art, die Welt zu begreifen, ihre Kontinuitäten und Diskontinuitäten wahrzunehmen, insbesondere die verschiedenen Trennlinien zwischen Menschen und Nichtmenschen. Biographische Informationen Philippe Descola, geboren 1949, ist emeritierter Professor für Anthropologie am Collège de France und gilt als der bedeutendste französische Anthropologe der Gegenwart. In seinen Forschungen entwickelt er eine vergleichende Anthropologie, die sowohl die Humanwissenschaften als auch die Reflexion über die ökologischen Herausforderungen unserer Zeit revolutioniert hat. Und kehren mit aller Macht zurück: Überraschenderweise begegnen wir ihnen heute nicht nur beim Rave oder bei schamanistischen Ritualen, sondern auch in Yogaklassen, Achtsamkeitsseminaren und Workshops, die die Leistungsfähigkeit im Job verbessern sollen. Und nicht zuletzt zeigt sich der neue Boom der Ekstatik in Krisenphänomenen wie einer martialischen Männlichkeit, in Massenbewegungen wie dem gewaltsamen Sturm aufs Kapitol in Washington oder den Protesten gegen die Coronamaßnahmen. Woher aber kommt diese neue Lust an der Ekstase? The ability to choose to forego eating is universally accessible, even to those living under conditions of maximal constraint, as in the prisons of apartheid South Africa, Israeli prisons for Palestinian prisoners, and the detention camp at Guantánamo Bay. It is a weapon of the weak, potentially open to all. By choosing to hunger strike, a prisoner wields a last-resort personal power that communicates viscerally, in a way that is undeniable--especially when broadcast over prison barricades through media and to movements outside. Refusal to Eat is the first book to compile a global history of this vital form of modern protest, the hunger strike. In this enormously ambitious but concise book, Nayan Shah observes how hunger striking stretches and recasts to turn a personal agony into a collective social agony in conflicts and contexts all around the world, laying out a remarkable number of case studies over the last century and more. It then moves to the post-colonial world where disputes over English in the schools reveal longstanding grievances and the inequities of historically rooted and politically motivated language policies, and where French is losing its hold to English in some former French-speaking colonies. It finally shifts to the United States where state and local officials and grassroots organizers are addressing the "foreign language deficit" and initiating programs that promote multilingualism. Drawing on a vast store of interdisciplinary research, interviews, court decisions, political commentary, literature, and popular culture from across the globe and in multiple languages, the book makes the case for a common global language (English for now) as a core component of multilingualism in a world that is growing smaller, more diverse, and more politically uncertain by the nanosecond"--

Robots and Artificial Intelligence-based automation have created new challenges for the world of work. Decades of neoliberalism have increased inequalities. The COVID-19 pandemic has shown the vulnerability of humanity to viruses and health crises. Humanity and society are in a major crisis and digitalisation mediates this crisis. Digital Humanismexplores how Humanism can help us to critically understand how digital technologies shape society and humanity, providing an introduction to Humanism in the digital age. Fuchs introduces the approach of Digital Humanism and outlines foundations of a Radical Digital Humanism, analysing what decolonisation of academia and the study of the digital, media and communication means; what the roles are of robots, automation, and Artificial Intelligence in digital capitalism, and how the communication of death and dying has been mediated by digital technologies, capitalist necropower, and digital capitalism. In order to save humanity and society, we need Radical Digital Humanism now.

    Abstract: Die zweifelhafte Wahrnehmung, dass der postmoderne Kapitalismus einem Telos der zwanglosen Verständigung oder einem Zustand der uneingeschränkten Wahlmöglichkeiten und der grenzenlosen subjektiven Selbstverwirklichung entgegeneilt, ist nichts als die Erscheinungsform ihres genauen Gegenteils, einer postpolitischen Gesellschaft ohne echte Wahlmöglichkeiten, in der die Subjektivität selbst längst anämisch und zu einem bloßen Simulationsmodell verkommen ist. Die Frage lautet deshalb nicht, welche Bedeutung der kritischen Theorie der Gesellschaft aus der Perspektive der Postmoderne als der angeblich kritischen Theorie der Gegenwart noch zukommt, sondern genau andersherum: Wie erscheint die gegenwärtige Gesellschaft und mit ihr die Postmoderne als ihre hegemoniale Ideologie im Licht der kritischen Theorie? Denn weit davon entfernt, eine kritische Analyse der Gegenwartsgesellschaft zu leisten, macht sich die Postmoderne durch die radikale Verwerfung der angeblich „repressiven“ Allgemeinbegriffe und Totalitarismen („Es gibt nicht die Logik des Kapitals“, „es gibt nicht die Gesellschaft“) blind für die immanente Entwicklungsdynamik des Kapitalismus, die der Neoliberalismus vollstreckt, und phantasiert stattdessen lieber von den Kulturen und bunten Minderheiten, die der globale Kapitalismus durch seine beispiellose Tendenz zur Homogenisierung längst zur bloßen Folklore in Plastikkulissen oder spleenigen Marotten in den Freakshows der Kulturindustrie depraviert hat

    Abstract: A proposal that we think about digital technologies such as machine learning not in terms of artificial intelligence but as artificial communication. Algorithms that work with deep learning and big data are getting so much better at doing so many things that it makes us uncomfortable. How can a device know what our favorite songs are, or what we should write in an email? Have machines become too smart? In Artificial Communication, Elena Esposito argues that drawing this sort of analogy between algorithms and human intelligence is misleading. If machines contribute to social intelligence, it will not be because they have learned how to think like us but because we have learned how to communicate with them. Esposito proposes that we think of “smart” machines not in terms of artificial intelligence but in terms of artificial communication. To do this, we need a concept of communication that can take into account the possibility that a communication partner may be not a human being but an algorithm—which is not random and is completely controlled, although not by the processes of the human mind. Esposito investigates this by examining the use of algorithms in different areas of social life. She explores the proliferation of lists (and lists of lists) online, explaining that the web works on the basis of lists to produce further lists; the use of visualization; digital profiling and algorithmic individualization, which personalize a mass medium with playlists and recommendations; and the implications of the “right to be forgotten.” Finally, she considers how photographs today seem to be used to escape the present rather than to preserve a memory.
